this is fox5 local news at ten. right now at ten, harvey hits, the deadly storm leaving behind a palt of destruction and hundreds of how thousands of without power. the tonight the worst is far from over as the storm is expected to linger a long the gulf coast for daze. plus, a fox5 exclusive another case of a man taking a photo of a woman's kiter, this time a stranger comes to the aid of the victim. tonight they only speak to fox5. tropical storm harvey is being blamed for one death in texas tonight. hundreds of thousands are without power. it is a big storm for sure. the storm was downgraded from a category four hurricane earlier today. right now, the storm is though, lingering over

expected to stay there for several daze. larrest hit areas are corpus christi, houston and galveston. several homes and businesses already suffering major damage. unforth matily the system is expected to bring rain over the next several days fox's lauren blanchard has more from galveston, texas. >>reporter: harvey has been downgraded to a tropical storm but remains as a serious threat there is potential for catastrophic flooding as harvey spins deeper into texas unloading huge amounts of rain even triggering more severe weather inland. cellphone video appears to show a tornado in sigh products, texas and destruction from another tornado . please do not come back into these affected areas until you got an all clear from your county or your city eocs much there's so much dangerous things going on out there. we want to make

safe. this storm is expected to continue to drop rain for several days with some areas getting up 30 to 50 inches. crashing into southeast, texas as a category four hurricane and weakening to a category one by saturday morning. homes and businesses along the coast between corpus christi and houston received the brunt of the storm with damage ranging from downed trees to collapsed building. many spending the displaced residents in austin, texas. crews are beginning to begin rescue efforts as flood waters arise. make sure that you you put the signal out there that you are still there and you still need help. rescue crews will be out in full force as harvey continues to move inland in galveston, texas, lauren blanchard, fox news. by the way , dozens of red cross volunteers from our region are headed down to assist in the reliefff

hundreds of other volunteers taking food, water and shelter supplies to the hardest hit areas. they expect to support more than 20,000 people in both texas and louisiana. maryland search and rescue team is also on a letter tonight to help those impacted by harvey. the task force is ready to be deployed to texas within hours of receiving orders from fema. maryland's search and rescue team is one of 28 units across the us. typically the full task force willow oh is capable of being self sufficient for ten to 14 daze so they take all the equipment with them h. they don't have to rely on anything to the community to which they're responding. obviously it's usually a disaster situation. so they have the food, medical attention, we have k9 search and rescue. search and rescue teams from at least ate states are staged in san antonio texas

response efforts. president trump was up early this morning tweeting about hur kay before the hurricane was down graded to a tropical storm. he wrote closely monitoring hurricane harvey from camp david. city, state and local governments work ing together. the president gave a shout jut to the federal emergency management agency say ing you are doing a great job , the world is watching, be safe, members of congress are keeping close tabs on the president's action and not repeat the same mistakes as form er president joarnlg w bush whose administration was slow to respond to katrina. island communities authorities don't even know the full scope of damage because the weather conditions have prevented the emergency crews from getting into the hardest hit area. harvey has stalled it looks and sitting bringing all of this rain and expected to be there for days? >> absolutely and is that part of the problem.

continues to do a lot of spinning, a lot of on shore flow going on there and right now these people are dealing, lauren with torrential rainfall, flooding and lots of threats not only from the rain, but from the winds and from very strong violent storms. so let's take a look at what's going on right now with my maps and we'll show you what is happening. the spin of this system and the reach of it is very, very widespread hitting parts of our arkansas, oklahoma into louisiana and stretching over into the florida pan handle l as well. this storm is not going anywhere as we mentioned. it actually start ed drifting a little bit only at about two miles an hour to the north, northeast, but the problem with that is the longer it stays over this area, the more devastation they're going to be dealing with and trying to deal with all the rainfall and the flooding that is going on is indeed very challenging. you can see the outer bands are stretching pretty far as i mentioned. tropical storm warning for areas along the coast and pushing

into parts of central tech. we're also dealing with a tornado watch along the coast that in effect right through until 2 a.m. and also there are tornado warnings currently in equal if. a lot to cloud to ground lightening, a lot of storms fired up as a result. potential rainfall yet to come in addition to what's already there over 20 inches in areas to the south of whose on and then 12 to 20, seven to 12 in the area shaded in yellow. this storm is far from over. back to you you. now to a fox5 exclusive. it has happened again, another man accused of taking pictures up a woman's skirt. this time it happened at a 7/eleven in southwest just a few blocks away from nats park. fox5 a's evan lambert spoke to the victim and a witness. he joins us live with more now. evan, this is just so upsetting to hear about these things. it is, lauren and the witness tells us that

line here at this 7/eleven waiting to check out. the witness saw a man put his phone low and take a picture& underneath that woman's dress. the victim then confronted the suspect but he got away here south bowpped on south capital street towards nats park. a krord cording to the police report this all happened around 11:15 this morning. the witness told us she was much whatting the victim stand in line and noticed a man was extremely close behind her. she thought they were together but then saw the suspect pull out his phone and hold it under the woman's dress. when the man left the store, the witness flagged down the victim and told her what happened. the woman rushed out the door and grabbed the suspect demanding he delete the i am page minimum wage, but it is possible there are more image ottoman's phone. police do not have a copy of that video. the victim and witness have seen the video, though. here's how the

, you you know, was the one next to the counter. i said he took a picture under your skirt and she was like what, ran out behind him and snatched him up and he showed her the picture, deleted it. she's a local lady and to be upskirted in the local place like that you you frequently shop, which is crazy she comes in every day. and again, the suspect is still out there, d.c. police looking for that suspect right now, though, they just have a vague description. they are supposed to come back here and get the surveillance video we hope to share it with you you when we get it, live in southwest, evan lambert, fox5 local news. >> also happening in the district, police are investigat ing an early morning shooting in northeast. two men were shot just before 5 a.m. at a mobile gas station off new york avenue. it's not clear what led up to the shooting, but detectives were seen combing the inside and outside for evidence police say the victims were conscious and breathing when officers a

also looking for a person of interest in a sexual assault. they can be seeb here in this individual yoark it happened on the 800 block of fifth street northwest yesterday around 8:00 the suspect apreched the victim and sexually assaulted her. she was able to get away. police tonight are offering a $1,000 re ward for any information that leads to an arrest. and d.c. police looking for a person of interest in an armed robbery. last sunday around midnight two suspects the victim in the 1400 block of park wood place northwest. police say one of the suspects threatened the victim with a knife and demanded money. once the victim complied , the suspects ran off. police are offering a $10,000 re ward for information that leads to an arrest in the case. much more ahead on the damage and current conditions as the monster storm harvey continues to whoever over the gulf coast. first new details about north korea latest missile launch as the us military backtracks on the initial reports thathe

>> if you you hear gunfire in northwest d.c. tonight into tomorrow morning it could be the secret service. they'll be firing off a series of gub shots from different weapons to test the security system that can geo locate gunfire in realtime. the live fire exercise will shutdown some roads near the white house and the vice-president's home at the naval observatory. hundreds of people gathered for a rally in san francisco today to show their opposition to a white ring group called patriot prepare. they planned to hold their own rally but called it

safety concerns. north korea fired three short range missiles yesterday. they flew about 150 miles into the sea and de spite earlier reports that they failed now we are learning two of them were successful. we get the latest now from fox's ellison barber. >>reporter: less than 24 hours after saying north korea launched three missiles but two failed in flight, us military officials say that report is wrong. the us pacific command says the first and third missiles actually flew 155 miles in a northeastern direction. initially us officials said north korea launched three short range ballistic missiles in hawaii time it was the afternoon of august 25. pacific command said one missile blew up almost immediately and the other two failed in flight. the latter description resulting in today's update. the latest us assessment appears to now match the south korea's assessment. the launches are the first since the you y

really head back to class one school in new york is already finding itself in the midst of controversy. it's all thanks to the annual school calendar and what parents say is missing from it. >>reporter: in what seems like an effort to be politically correct the levittown school district has offended some of its members. the controversy sparking over this year's school calendar, hard copies were mailed to parents this week and on days off like columbus day and thanksgiving the boxes were simply marked no school. it's always been thanksgiving, christmas, et cetera. so it's all benz like that. i don't know why you have to change it. i understand certain people don't celebrate certain holidays , but everyone should at least put it down. the superintendent explaining in a letter which reads quote, due to the number of holidays that are closed and open on others it was decided

a memorial that on rs service men and women in stafford, virginia is grabbing attention for all the wrong reasons. fox5 's kristin leone reports, the memorial is covered with spelling mistakes and inaccurac ies and at least one concerned citizen is calling on the county on fix the problems. at the stafford county armed services memorial, every brick has its own story. he's taking a bridge and he's killed dearing taken abridge. jason pellet likes to come by and pay his respects to our war heros past and presentment you'll notice at the top it says stafford county honors residents who gave their lives. the only problem, though , jason says is that some of the names and ranks engraved on the bricks are not right. we have earl rem rr he's listed as a

first class. about a week ago he was here reflecting on what this particular war hero must have endured when he noticed something odd about this brick dedicated to him. must el manassas is a very common name however that's not how you spell it. he started doing some research on his own. however, that wasn't the only mistake made. it wasn't morris mus el man, it was norris. so we got his first name and last name spelled wrong. out of the 66 bricks here you you say paid for by the county, jason i sas 55 of them are inaccurate. when he brought this up to stafford county otions. they said that those names came from a an eagle scout project and nobody checked them. we called the county to see, if in fact, that's where the information came from, but have not heard back from them. still, jason says the county

this is fox5 local news at ten. more now on our top story we've been talking about it all day, all last night. the devastation in texas caused by hurricane harvey. harvey is now a tropical storm but it is still dumping torntion rains on the loan star state. the storm is blamed for at least one death and more than a dozen injuries. authorities fear that toll will go higher once searchers reach areas wiped out by the category four hurricane. harvey has stalled and expected to cause problems for days. the storm could produce more than 40 inches of rain and that would trigger dangerous floods. because of the flooding one of the top focal points that we are concerned about is

rescue and recovery. we want to do everything we possibly can to keep people out of rising water. >> harvey was the strongest hurricane to hit the united states in more than a decade and it is the strongest storm to hit texas in more than 50 years. firefighters in corpus christi had a daunting task last night trying to put out this fire as the winds were whipping and the rain was really coming down. witnesses say the house exploded in flames and some cars parked nearby. they actually melted. still no word on what caused that fire. firefighters did the best they could to extinguish the flames but let the pounding rain put it out. katie t texas are saying saying a tornado touched down. it's an area not too far away from houston. the storm damaged 50 homes and many businesses. trees were up rooted

in the aftermath of the storm. still more rain is expected to come through the area. hurricane harvey is the trump first major disaster. the president is receiving updates while at camp david. earlier tonight we spoke with political strategist david brown and jack burkman about the backlash. this is a president and this is a white house that has shown an utter disregard for the traditions and the responsibilities that we would assume the white house would adhere to, namely a natural disaster. you wouldn't be going into the camp david and you you you would stay on the situation phone. i agree in part and dis agree in part. did he miss an opportunity. if i was trump this was taylor made for hivment i would have been down there day one and handing out sandwiches. i think trump did miss an opportunity. i would have been down there

plays in dlmed's reactive personality. it could have been a pr hit. harvey is the hardest hurricane to hit the us in a decade. matthew devastated southeast, florida, one month prior to that hurricane hur mean hit florida and in 2012 hurricane sandy hit the east coast. in 2008 hurricane ike pounded texas as a category two and hurricane katrina we all remember that, it slammed into louisiana back in 2005. it remains the most expensive storm in us history. definitely a mess for everybody down there. i feel so horrible watching and waiting. i think you were saying it earlier we have the report of one person dead. just pray there aren't any more deaths. they're some areas that they're still waiting to survey

of tornado watches and warnings around the area. that's going to continue right through at least until wednesday or thursday and that's a pretty good indication of the intensity of this storm. a lot, a lot of torntion rainfall. not out of the clear. for sure. but here at home things start of looking great. things are great, very calm which we're happy for, but we've had a really great weekend so far and we're go going to have that. as we take a look once again at harvey it is devastating causing a lot of problems for people. the other issue for them, sorry for walk ing into the screen like that, but the other issue here is the fact that they are without power and that's going to be very extended. so imagine trying to even, you know, get in there and try to see what's going on and survey things when there is no power, no electricity. people who might

that's what they're dealing with . with the water situation and the flooding you have to make sure they have safe water to drink. this is torrential rainfall coming down here. take a look at the extent of this reaching all the way through into louisiana a heading closer towards florida as well. arkansas, oklahoma all affected i want to tell you you right now with all this rainfall that is coming down, there is a very strong pocket but by about midday tomorrow houston could be under where a range of ten to 2s all this on shore flow that's continuing. this storm is just not moving. it's not getting out of here anywhere. it doesn't have any type of steering mechanism to get it out of the way. so it's kind of meandering here and not going anywhere at all and that's causing a the lot of the issues tropical storm warning in effect for this area allege the coast and the interior playing plenty of

course. there is a tornado watch until two in the morning and there are also some tornado warnings in effect. the tornado watch n.a.d.e. ' threat continues right through as well currently 630-mile per hour winds sustained it with as it kind of moves about p two miles an hour or so not much east to the northeast and here's a look at the projected path for it as we get through into about wednesday where it's supposed to just move a little bit north annulus some of its tropical characteristics. once again not going too far. rainfall amounts here we go, at least 20 plus for the area shaded here, 12 to 20 for the area shaded in white, seven to 12 inches the area shaded in yellow. this is on p to of what they've already gotten and this is through until tuesday, this project here. barely moving and drifting. the center is now 70 miles east southeast of san antonio, texas rain through thursday is the pro jected measurements there with isolated amoun.

underneath the victim's descres she talked exclusively with fox5 . he put the camera real flow and flashed and everything under her skirt. it made my storm hurt a little bit. i want a the lot of women to know that there's a guy out in your area that will actually upskirt you. the man got away. we're told the store has a surveillance camera and police are expected to review any video of this, but there is some concern that this man may have done this before, so police are asking anyone with information about the case to give them a call. also in the district police are investigat ing an early morning shooting in northeast. two men were shot just before 5 a.m. at a mobile gas station off of new york avenue. it's not clear what led up to the shooting but detectives were seen combing inside and outside of that gas station for efforts. police say the victims were conscious and breathing when officers arrived if you have any information about this, call d.c. police. still no word what us contacted an early morning crash on the beltway, a tractor-trailer over turned on the

murals is called 28 blocks and it represents the 28 huge marble blocks that were brought in to washington to construct the lincoln memorial. this meurl begins with a e quote by fled frederick douglas about ernest in, working hard, which is a foundation of what we are as americans. these were immigrants from italy and freedman from the united states who did this work to create probably the most ionic memorial in washington, d.c. i thought from the florida app that went across the bypass. it's a really good view from there. 50,000 people a day can see this meurl by riding up and down the redline between rhode island avenue and noam a and also our visitors who are on amtrak
