catastrophe in houston, emergency crews are working nonstop rescuing people from their homes as the flood waters continue to rise. >> the historic downpour paralyzed region and the flooding remarkably is expected to get worse. officials now say crews rescued at least 3,000 people from flooded areas. 1,000 of those rescues came in just the last nine hours. >> there are reports now of multiple deaths related to the storm. a family. six is feared dead in houston after flood waters swept their van away. at least 30,000 people are expected to stay in shelters and more rain, marina marraco starts off the team coverage with the latest. marina. >> reporter: this catastrophic storm is not even close to being over. you see tropical storm harvey hovering over texas and the golf of mexico. tonight, all 12,000

mobilized. 3,000 are already on the ground, and several mandatory evacuations have been ordered today, including in one of the worst hit areas, dickinson texas, harvey so far has produced nine trillion gallons of water and still more to come. >> the top floor when the top floor got wet, just, they just pancaked. >> thousands of houston families displaced, >> i plan on staying here for the time they let us stay here, four, five days and then go home. >> reporter: the fourth largest u.s. city under water and expected to get hit with another 15 to 20 inches of rain in the next coming days. >> we've completed the rescue of 2000 houstonians. >> reporter: shelter at capacity for people to seek cover at gas stations anywhere away from the constant stream of water >> texans need to be prepared for more rainfall

our area. >> unfortunately it is still pouring rain in houston, 72 hours to the hour of when landfall was initially made as hurricane harvey as a tropical storm almost doesn't matter. the heavy rains continue in the same exact spots. and tony, these amounts that came in earlier, was this afternoon, they're higher now are astounding nearly 40 inches of rain so many towns over 30 inches of rain, including south houston, both airports over 20 inches of rain. that was from earlier today. the rain will continue through tonight, tomorrow, even into wednesday. really just awful to report. but just keeps oncoming. look at this. houston zooming in heavy rain around the center of the circulation of the tropical storm which is offshore and that extends down towards parts of galveston as well. this continues the heavy bands of moisture across southern louisiana, look at lake charles,

went on at 5:00 this afternoon, mainly south of new orleans now expected to get heavy rain late into early tomorrow morning, the path is slowly me an dearing off to the east southeast and will make a third landfall as a tropical storm some time late tuesday on the texas louisiana border before late wednesday into thursday moving out of texas off of louisiana and into arkansas. we're talking about place that is will record 50 plus inches in southeast texas including houston an additional ten so 15 including new orleans, we have moisture to deal with from what should be tropical storm,er ma by day break coming up in a little bit around 10:30. >> help is on its way to houston from our area, the american red cross sent one of its mobile kitchens to the region, left fairfax county this morning. and

inside and volunteers will pick up more supplies as they get closer to texas. volunteers will prepare meals for people in need and provide them with cleaning supplies. many people in our region would like to help. some folks want to donate food or clothing, the red cross says it prefers make financial donations instead, only because it takes a lot of time to pack up food, clothing and other supplies, red cross is one of many agencies. we have a full list of way you can lend a hand on fox 5 local news dc.com. american university expelled 18 students involved in an underground fraternity accused in participating violence, hazing and under age drinking. and that's the beginning. lindsey watts has the back story from campus with the latest. lindsey? >> reporter: well, shawn, the university took really serious steps he can say pelling

students, this is a group that has been accused of assault, rape and drug use there was a criminal case after a pledge was run down by a car. the group is called iota, known as ei. american university put out this information, it says, in part, this group has perpetuated and systematically present add threat to the safety and well-being our students. it goes on to outline the all alleged elicit behavior. for past 15 years, ei has been picked off campus. the university feels it's such a danger, new students are warned about it during orientation and the group is mentioned. they say ei is best known for big parties and that members at least in recent years have been wealthy ier

. ♪ ♪. developing right now in new mexico a gunman is in custody accused of firing shots inside a public library. it's in the southeastern part of the state. city manager tells the associated press, two people were killed, four others hurt. several injured were taken to the hospital for treatment. it is unclear the victim's names and if they were related to the shooter. police right now are questioning the gunman. we're hearing from a witness who saw two men fall into the potomac last night near the key bridge in georgia town. the witness tells us appears the first man jumped off intentionally trying to land in the water below. fox 5 evan lambert is live in the spot where both men went into the river. what have you learned tonight, evan? >> reporter: tony, the witness said he heard the friends of the first man yelling

let him do it? there is surveillance video of this jump we are not goo going to show it to you. it shows the first man falling, hitting the dock and rolling into the water and then appears to show that second man jumping in right after the first man. the area where the men went in in the potomac is a place where people hang out and enjoy the view across. it's an old act deduct that appearses to be at least 40 or so feet high. officials told us police have had concerns in past about people falling or jumping in from here and they have discouraged people from hanging out the edge. that's exactly what witnesses say was going on last night around 9:00 when it was still dusk. a witness said he was eating dinner with his girlfriend at the top of the act duct landing when a man came running up and flew past him. >> i just seen this guy out of the corner of my eye jump off the side of the

immediately hit the dock and the water. my heart goes out to his friends that were there. people and now something, you know, the memories they're going to have to live with. >> reporter: we even seen police come up here and try to clear these people from the landing. but people have come back since. this police tape is supposed to keep them out. but clearly. it does not do that. police, they have identified the two men who died as danny garcia and calvin zero fast of manassas, we were asked if alcohol or drugs are involved. we have not gotten a response. live in northwest, evan lambert, fox 5 local news. prince william's county were investigating a possible hate crime that target add church in dumb frees.

events. news starts now. american university filling 18 students involved in underground fraternity >> lindsey? >> reporter: jim and sarah, the guy who were part of a group over the years have been accused of hazing, assault, rape and drug use. and underground fraternity here on campus, known as ei. this information was put out by american university today. the school saying the group has been a threat to the safety and well-being of students. considered so bad, administrators warned students to stay away. this was a group recognized fraternity on campus but went rogue after their nash chapter. in addition to 18 students

explained but is able to stay here on campus. a witness says two men fell into the potomac last night near the key bridge in georgetown. >> reporter: dc police just showed up right now to clear people off this legend, this crime scene tape is supposed to be a message for people not to go beyond the ledge. people ignored that warning and it led to their death. there is surveillance video showing the falls of those two men, we're choosing not to show it but i can tell you shows one of them hitting the dock below and falling into the water. the second man appears to go in after him. police have identified both men they say they're 30 of manassas be right now we do not know if alcohol or drugs has played a role. emergency

still working to rescue people as flood waters continue to rise. harvey has dumped historic levels of rain in all of about nine trillion gallons so far, at least 30,000 expected in the area shelters. the shower or thunderstorm is far from over. it's expected to make a second landfall near louisiana some time tomorrow. >> just can't get a breakdown there. that's for sure. we've been pretty lucky in our area, pretty nice today. >> caitlin roth here tonight. >> hi there, jim and sarah. i'm here and i'm talking about local weather that's bringing us a rainy day on tuesday. it's not going to be nice tomorrow, cool, breezy and just rain all day in the forecast. thanks, in part to this tropical cyclone off the coast of the carolinas expected to be tropical storm erma by tomorrow morning, rain is still south of our area. tropical storm watches and warnings have been issued on what is expected by morning, to be a

it's almost there, winds sustained at 40 miles an hour, got to get closer to about 45 miles an hour. if we get that off the coast of cape hatteras, we'll have a tropical storm by mid afternoon, bringing a glassing blow to placings like outer break away from the atlantic coast line which is great news but we still got the moisture, and the heavy rain bands will expend to southern virginia and possibly southern maryland, tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. pouring in richmond through scream southern st. mary's county and rain showers across the whole metro by tomorrow morning, rains throughout the day, heavy at times further southeast and continues into the evening. winds are off the atlantic on the north side of the storm system and will provide that cool breeze. temperatures will struggle to hit 70. this all before we clear late tomorrow night into wednesday morning. pack the umbrella and a jacket. temperatures stay in the 60's with a bre

game you've likely heard the state song, maryland, my maryland, but you will not hear it this year, the university suspended playing the song. critics say the civil war era song is racist. some of the lyrics refer to president lincoln and call on merely to join the confederate see. the university issued a statement that said, in part as part of the university's efforts to reaffirm our value, we're assessing the songs, we're suspending the playing of maryland, my maryland to evaluate if it is consistent with the values of our institution at this time. maryland governor larry hogan reacted as well. >> there is a paragraph -- there's a one versus pretty egregious it came up in the legislature last year, they chose not to do anything about it but i'm sure they will be discussing it

towards the south, heavy showers down through charlotte stop. much of the north carolina coast line as you get to wilmington through charleston, back through the southeast coast of texas and the gulf coast, it's relept less. the heavy rain heavy at times continues in houston and many communities southeast of houston, tropical storm harvey has been sitting in the same spot. heavy bands across the metro that has seen 30 plus inches of rain in so many spots since friday night. and that continues with heavy rain across the southern louisiana coast line, new orleans going to get a lot of heavy rain, harvey barely moving and will continue to meander southeast of galveston over the next 24 hours, making a secondary landfall some time i believe late tuesday, early wednesday along the texas louian

finally on thursday, getting out of texas and moving into the by late wednesday into thursday. taking such a long time to get out of there. of course, that is why we're dealing with such unprecedented flooding. back to erma or what should become erma. this tropical storm luckily moving straight out to sea, should not be impacting the coastal u.s. beyond the carolinas late the into early tomorrow, they're getting a lot of rainfall there. through tonight, watch the northern rain bands come into our area, heavy rain expected in the richmond area, even into extreme southern maryland could see heavy rain, but for us, i think it's just persistent showers all day, morning lunch break, after school and evening, rain driving home and coming to an end by tomorrow evening, wednesday should be nicer. rain arriving by day break, 66 for the overnight low, high temperatures clipping 70, breezy, cool, feels nothing
