you're trying to save anything you you can. so it's a real heartache and it's something we'll live with forever. and flooding isn't the only concern in the wake of harvey. this is unreal, people in southeast texas have to worry about floating fire ants. this is video taken in fire ants. they're boint when they work together. they look like ribbon s or blobs on p tof the water. they can be fatal and they can kill small animals. people in texas are trying to get to higher ground so are snakes. and as you just saw fire ants and gait os and they're showing up in some than usual spots you wouldn't normally see them. one pamly found a five-foot long l alligator in their drive waism it's being captured and being sent to a gaiter farm. a family in houston who decided to escape the

developing now in charles county members of the charles county fair voted unanimously to ground the confederate flag which was flown annual reply in a display at the fair. fox5 d evan lambert is live with the details on this situation. >>reporter: the fair's board took that vote last night again voting you unanimously to not fly the confederate flag at

september and the decision i've been told by the fair board's president was made with the cons consultation of the naacp and the sons of confederate veterans local chapter. that's the group that had displayed this confederate flag as part of an educational display at the fair it's been going on for years. but of course you you have to take into account current events . this is all coming in the debate over the confederate flag and confederate monday ultimates and after the violence in charlottesville. as a result of that, a commissioner had ask ed that the rest of the commission agree to send a letter to the fair's' board asking that they not display the confederate flag. this year it did not get that far, that letter never being sent because the fair's board voted last night to not fly that confederate flag. of course, the meeting, though, is still going on tonight, this commission meeting and this issue is still up for discussion . we're going to b

this is fox5 local news at five here are your headlines at 35. thirty, a lot of police activity in southeast d.c. this morning. officers were called to a neighborhood near ninth street and independent avenue for a report of an aggressive dog. when police got there they encountered a pit bull that was acting aggressively. officers tried to restrain it but when it launched at one of them officers shot and killed the dog. it's still unclear who that owner is we know the identity of two men from manassas who fell in the river. neither men survived. they were trying to land into

the water blow. he's been identified as danny garcia. his friend jumped into the water to serve garcia but he died as wevment the driver of a tractor-trailer is luckily i to be alive after an amtrak train hit his vehicle. this happened in stafford virginia. the tractor-trailer got stuck on the tracks and the trucker tried to alert the train's driver. it was raibl able to slow down but could in the avoid the accident a car crashed at rock creek parkway in p street northwest. the vehicle slipped down an embankment and a driver was trapped inside. firefighters you you can see right here responding and got the driver on you, but they say it was a big challenge in part because the car was so unstable. we're told that driver was seriously hurt and was taken to the hospital. students at a school in be these disa are being told to leave their washington redskins gear the at home. the word comes from the private school in mupt which is telling parents,

name is disparaging. meanwhile terry mcauliffe is defending his efforts to put a new stadium in virginia. here's physician five 's tom fitzgerald. >>reporter: this is the greenacres school in north bethesda, m. when the nfl season rolls around zc, maryland and virginia, that's redskins country, but not this season and in the at this school. for years there has been an effort on get the washington redskins to change their name because some native american groups say that name iso fencive. now, greenacres school sent a letter to parents saying they do not want any students sent here with clothing that racially denigrate s a racial group. the school leader here neil brown says it was not an easy decision . i feel strongly that wearing clothing with the name of our local football team or the logo that they are an after might to our

and our diversity statement. the name of the team is a racial slur. i think the logo at best is an ethnic stereo type. at worst it's deeply demeaning fl school administrators say the ban on red scints gear at greenacres gear came after long talks in classrooms with questions about the impact of team logos like the washington redskins that are based on race or ethnicity. that's a question we asked virginia democratic governor terry mcauliffe. since charlottesville violence the governor has declared that he wants all confederate status re moved to stop hate speech. the governor has not called for the washington redskins to change his name as he still tr ies to get the team to build a new stadium in virginia. what's the difference. mcauliffe says it's about public spaces versus a private company. there's no moral equivocal situate. we're talking about

owned and controlled by the say the versus a private company. private companies have to make their own decisions, as governor i take, as on those things that i can affect. for their part the washington redskins and their owner daniel schneider have insisted for years throughout these controversies that they will never change the team's name. in north bethesda, maryland, tom fitzgerald report ing. the university of maryland will have ones less fraternity house this year. the university will no longer recognize maryland's chapter of kappa sigma. the decision to pull the plug on the fraternity was announced last week. the national fraternity had already revoked its charter. the frat has been under fire for years. back in 2014 a former member sent an offensive e-mail that included racial sleurs. last year the university put the fraternity on probation and ordered members to take corrective steps but school leaders say the frat failed to meet those expectations. kappa sigma will

>> a guilty verdict for an officer in a police-involved shooting that was caught on camera in chicago. this happened back in 2013. a response to a report of a possible stolen car on foot chase. he fired 16 shots towards the car wounding two of the sfs inside. the video shows the car was backing away from him as he fired. when a police officer is called to a scene you do not immediately get out and start firing

and we had a rainy day here ourselves. just about an inch to an inch and a half in much of the d.c. metro, guys skies as we take a live look out at the capital dome. you but we should be clearing out. the rain should come to an end for d.c. a fairly nice end to the workweek, but the remnants of tropical storm harvey arrive light rain showers, but you you might want to consider a backup plan to your saturday plans if they do involve being outdoors. let's take a look a at the reports coming in from tropical storm harvey. l 8.1 inches of rain. a us tropical cyclone, this is the most that any storm -- the most rainfall any storm has ever delivered to a part o

previous record setback in 1978 from tropical storm amelia. much of the houston area seeing these rainfall amounts that are just unbelievable over 40, 45 and now over 50 inches of rainfall and we're not done yet south houston got 43 inches in both the airports, over 25 inches. houston, hobby 43.88 io just unbelievable. luckily tropical storm harvey should be on its way out by tomorrow. we may see an additional few inches of rain through tonight. winds have actually increased a bit now sustained at 50 miles an hour just offshore of galveston and expected to make a third landfall along the texas, louisiana border late tonight. by wednesday afternoon now a tropical depression moving through northern louisiana a into arkansas into the tennessee valley by midway day on friday and from there the remnants kind of disgreat but have some is

into the mid atlantic. unbelievable how far reaching some of these bands from tropical storm harvey are from florida through the pan handle. new orleans has only seen three and a half inches of rain so far down through southwestern, you louisiana and tech. houston can see the back edge of the precipitation which is very optimistic president the best they've seen in five days. you have you ' still got very heavy rain bands in beaumont texas. still seeing plenty of flooding rainfall. tropical depression number ten thatten hassed the rainfall that fell throughout the day today, but even the back edge of that starting to approach washington. up through new york, new jersey, they'll still three rain through tonight . zoom in on the washington, metro area. temperatures very cool with the a all day rain. sixty-nine in washington, 66 in baltimore, 70 in annapolis, 66 in manassas, fox futurecast shows that through the evening tonight most of the rain pushes off lieu the
