tonight some members of my family who were stuck in their home are sharing their story. the news at ten starts right now . first tonight, a passenger assaulted a bus driver and the weapon of choice, a cup of europe. the passenger had to be taken to the hospital for de contamination. marina maracco is live with more reporter roar it's been more than 72 hours since this europe your rin attack and in hopes that someone can identify this woman. metro says that the bus driver spoke to the passenger just before the passenger got off the bus by say ing have a nice day. the passenger spoppedded by saying are you talking to me? and then this is what happened. it happened in the blink of epa eye , a what mat a bus driver drenched by a passenger.

blamed for at least 15 deaths including a houston police sergeant. late this afternoon they confirmed that sergeant steve perez died after being trapped in high water. it happened while he was driving to work on sunday. harvey continue s to linger over the gulf coast region, so far more than 13,000 people have been rescued in huss ton and surning areas. president trump visited texas today receiving on the ground briefings in corpus christi and a austin. meanwhile a masstive volunteer effort is underway in texas with people coming in to help from across the country. that includes dozens of first responders and volunteers from our era. fox5's lindsay watts joins us now with more. >>reporter: he just got off the phone about an hour ago with a red cross volunteer who has been in houston since thursday. art shaw conditions are improving but he thinks months of recover require still to come. i'll let him tell you what he's seeing

back here in probably late september or early october because we're thinking some of these shelters may be open until late fall. right now there are 31 red cross volunteers from our region helping with the aftermath of this storm. the organization is continuing to send people. four more are going to going to be leaving tomorrow morning. they will be driving to baton rouge. fox5 a will be there as they hit the road tomorrowment we were with the montgomery county swift water team sunday night as they deployed. so much assistance is needed out thrcht the spokesperson for the red cross national capital region just told me he's hearing people could be in shelters through christmas. the destruction just that bad, shawn. it is indeed, thank you very much. emergency crews as we mensed have rescued 13,000 people since harvey hit texas. many families are still trapped in their homes. my cousin dr. carla davis and her husband and three

kids were stuck in their home. carla joins us on the phone. good evening. >> good evening. what is the weather situation, water situation around your home tonight. >> it really has gone become to almost normal. we saw the sun today and that was a really good sign and the street in front of our home doesn't have water on it. these are welcome signs. absolutely because i know at one point there were pictures showing the water covering the streets in your neighborhood all the way up to your front door. as have been at home for the couple of daze that you you guys were stuck in, these are some of the pictures from are neighborhood right now we're seeing. as you guys were stuck at home and you you were watching the images on tv of are neighbors and folks all around the houston and in the suburbs being rescued have you you ever experienced anything like this there. >> absolutely not. the whole scene was just really surreal and it really

it was from house toon. it was, as the gentleman said earlier katrina like. i have colleagues who had to be rescued with blackhawk helicopters from the second floor of their house. so this is really unprecedented and it's really something that we're going to recover from. i mentioned some of your l column eating i know that you are the head of the food allergy program at the childrens texas hospital what sort of ill pack did this have on the hospitals there. >> for sure, the staff that were in the hospitals at the time the storm hit had to kind of stay there and ride out this storm taking care of the patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week or at least past their regular shift. so it's been really tax ing for the staff. but in the hospital i worked in, texas children hospital, none of the patient care was really compromised. i know that it's going to take quite sometime

the entire area to recover from this storm. what are you hearing from your neighbors and your friends as they're looking forward to the future and the cleanup? >> well, many of them that have lost their homes or have had extensive flooding are really experiencing some level of dis pair. there is some hope as they file insurance claims, but it's really sobering to know that it's going to be a long process ahead. we still need a lot of help and there is a generous spirit where a community is coming together to try to help one another. let's hope they continue to do that. car look large audience, i'm glad to hear that you you you, eric and the kids are doing great. we eastern certainly wish you well down there, you and everybody in the storm's pass. >> my pleasure, thank you expl it was a wet day across our region and seems like things are drying up a little bit

thank goodness, because they need to dry out. when we still look at those images that we were seeing there from houston. we did hear good news from cousin. originally the flood waters were right up to their door. tonight she said we start ed to see that happen. pep have been able to leave their homes for the first times. maybe they were the lucky ones. but still you're right in seeing the sunset today it's nice. tr harvey is finally moving out. thank goodness. harvey still making a third landfall at some point early tomorrow morning across the texas, louisiana border. not before these un press denned and historic rainfall amounts that will no doubt take monthses to recover from. cedar buyer, 48.6 inches of rainfall which set the most p rainfall from any tropical cyclone in our weather

for answers. today we learned the maryland state department of education hired a d.c. consult ing firm to do an audit and investigate school's ceo dr. kevin maxwell continues to refute the allegations because today says he wants to get the investigation started and put the matter to rest. the consult ing firm will issue its rrt by october. we are just weeks away from the start of chars county fair in large audience plate a, but this year will be a little bit different. they have voted you unanimously not to fly the confederate flag much that's been a tradition at the fair for years. fox's evan lambert has details. >>reporter: tone initial it really has been incredible to watch this decision be made really without much fanfare at all. the groups behind the decision say that it just took listening to each other's perspectives and taking them into account. the fair board telling us that they made the decision not to fly the confederate flag this year because they wanted people to feel save and to have a good time

there was a meeting, though, tonight the at the county government building to discuss the decision made by the fair's board in a you you you unanimous vote last night. the discussion was really just how proud they were of groups like the naacp, the sons of confederate veterans and the fair board about how they came to a decision that seems to please everybody who made it. it's pretty remarkable given the national debate that's ongoing about monuments in public spaces where we've seen vial eps and protests akrot country here in large audience plate oh maryland removing the flag from the fair ground hasn't been an issue. the sons of con fed razz i they took a vote. they denieded not to have a flag and we took a vote last night among the board of directors and you you try to get 22 people to agree offering. it's very hard, but we had 22 descrekors there

hesitate to help. they underwent the surgery at georgetown georgetown university hospital. these childhood best friends are both now deputies with the charles county sheriff's department. they spend their days saving lives and now one of them will save the life of the other by denew jersey transiting his kidney. two mumble guys. if i was a match it was going to be. they were both on the same day and have since followed a similar life path. it should be no surprise they both find each other on the operating day on the same day at methodist georgetown university hospital. i always tell people you you you it wouldn't be normal if weren't nerves is. a kidney transplant from one friend to another. we met each other pretty young and then reunited as cadets at

became police officers. they met as kids in little league baseball and became even closer while both patrolling the treats of charles county. i wouldn't ask him to do it, but p he was the first one to go up and get tested and the first one to find out that he was a match. deputy davis has suffered with kidney disease since he was a team and his time was suddenly running out. to his surprise his long time co-worker never hesitated to step up muchs that he ' how we get the kidney out. he's going to feel uncomfortable within a few days, but within a week i expect him to feel much better. both men went under the knife tuesday morning and are expected to be back to normal in the couple of weeks. the two say they're excited to get back to work to save even more lives together. that's what we do. we help people. serve the community and i'm taking care of my
