direct hit with hurricane irma today unfortunately that is not the kas for some of the islands in northern lesser antilles late last night and early today direct hit for barbooda anguila and s st. martin. the eye of what is hurricane irma, still incredibly powerful is 55 miles norm of san one and continues moving west northwest at 15 miles an hour. seen they definitely had hurricane conditions and did not get the pounding and direct hit that some of those smaller islands in northern lee wards got. let me show you radar. we can see that thing spinning and we believe there's something called an eye wall replacement cycle going on. so, it's had a 15 mile wide eye. we believe that is contracting now and that may be a sign that after this eye wall replacement is over this hurricane could get stronger and this is not a good scenar

that's for sure. let me show you the latest track in a little while, 5, 40 minutes we'll have a new track from the national hurricane center and see if there's adjustment to what happened. if you were watching earlier today you may know the track did shift east based on overnight modeling and trends continuing today. what i'm showing you here all hurricane warnings up and notice central pressure on this storm. 916 milibars. that is low. it was lower than that. 915 earlier today and that means that this is indeed strongest hurricane we've seen in this part of atlantic. maintained winds 185 miles an hour for over 30 hours now and it's just unbelievable. and sarah simmons is here too. i don't know if you have a microphone pop in anyway. let me show you the track with this thing and we can continue to talk about this. it looks like it will be passing next north of the dominican rep. that's good.

8 7, 85 degrees. >> that keeps it going at cat 5. >> let's take you to sunday, 2:00. you may remember that this cone was a little bit in the direct path of the hurricane center and indicates with the icon closer to florida keys. today shifted and this is not a good scenario for east coast of florida. that is bringing a lot of direct effects towards miami on this path that goes downhill very early on sunday morning if not late saturday night and then you see it grazes right up what we think is 95 closer to savannah and charleston. they have to be unhappy seeing that coming sarah, because a few years

is when hurricane hugo came into south carolina as category now right now it weakened to a 3 on the path we're seeing at this point. it's not the only hurricane out there. >> right jose right. >> right. >> what we're seeing now with irma fuel what is going on with jose, is it feeding off of it. >> it may follow in the path a little bit. hopefully water will get up well enough it doesn't become the kind of monster irma is. irma is grabbing all energy out front. when two hurricanes are a distant apart they can interact but these are too far apart to happen. unfortunately jose is taking a path somewhat similar. check this out. hurricane hunters have been working so hard, getting into this system. the most recent path this is so concerning continuing to find in center of hurricane irma wind speeds sustained

miles an hour gusts to 200 and some damage pictures we've seen coming out of barbood and st. martin. >> it's decimated. >> and the likelihood it stays at 185 it is moving to warmer waters. >> we don't know for sure. >> it could weaken at this eye wall psych he and come back up. it will stay four or five category wise for 26, 48 ho hours. the storm is maintaining strength and hurricane hunters will continue to watch it as you know, we're watching irma not interact with puerto rico tonight and probably not with dominican republic and with cuba it maintains strength. by not hitting land. >> these are areas that watch the possible land fall. right up to the carolinas down the coast to south carolina to florida,

area over the hook is gulf coast with irma. >> which needs break. >> needs a break. >> and by the way there's a hurricane katia in the gulf of mexico. that will go more southward to mexic. and it's a much weaker storm. both jose and katia are category 1 storms. >> not that we want to diminish by any means what is going on or happening in miami but further up the coast we're wondering as it makes its way up when would tim pact carolinas are we talkng about and do we know if it may turn and go out east and out to sea. >> i'll go back and show you spaghetti models. once we get that far out in time the models die vernl. right now we had great consensus between the models we look at and they're on it in the next you know two or three days ahead. you get to day four and five and there's a bigger spread. so, but if we were to see effects on this path it would be likely tuesday, wednesday, carolinas would see it

they have to watch that too. jose this is category 1 following behind irma. i want to show you that track that it is taking. it's nothing to ignore. it s has got category one winds and it's trying to develop to category two and three before weakening on monday to more of category 1. on that path it would be we passing islands and we'll have to see what happens as we go further out in time. >> could it get stronger than what it's predicting there. >> it could. >> you mentioned not being over island oar land it has watt to fuel it. >> right. let's hope maybe some of this water has been khurnd up a little by irma going on by. but that's interesting to see that it may even be able to get to category and notice the cone slightly brushes the lesser antilles and these are the areas that were hit so hard by irma last night including direct hit for barbooda and anguila and s st. martin. beautiful islands i've seen the picture and

to go. >> some say it's like a tornado going through. >> on a larger scale. >> it does look like that if anybody had a chance to look at pictures out there right now. >> speaking of the wind damage, this hurricane has about a 15-mile wide eye. but the hurricane-force conditions are 50 miles from center. so what i'm showing you here are wind field we're expecting as based on national hurricane center forecast. and the red is where most intense winds are. so notice how it's missing puerto rico and it's going to miss worst of the winds up here as though they pass north of islands and they get tropical storm and hurricane conditions. but the worst of it stays in that little red area and goes right over some of the turks and cacoes and you see the redmayne taind that's the wind feel we're watching with irma this is taking to you friday midnight. we're not going to be able to go too far out with this but at least i see wind intensity lessening as it moves off the islands and starts heading

straits that's a huge force of tropical storm force winds that may do that and this may be under doing it. >> irma is stronger than wh which? the lasts two hurricanes combined? or which are we talking about. >> irma certainly we think is strongest that we've seen in atlantic. the only thing that comes close is hurricane allen in 1990 which had wind of 190 miles an hour and irma maintained 185 for 33, 34 hours and still going strong. that's crazy. >> that's what makes it. >> it's continuing -- sustained winds. >> and you know keeping in mind that we have not had that many fives hit the united states. i think andrew was a five. andrew was of course a totally different scenario. a lot of people are trying to compare irma to andrew and andrew came teeingt westing to miami and homestayed florida.

when it hit land was it as strong as this one. >> it was briefly five. not as strong as irma. >> this is stronger and faster and harder for sure. all right. so there we are with wind fields. i love having my own hurricane special where are you going i thought they were going to keep ongoing. >> keep going. >> focusing locally here for a little bit, too, as we continue to monitor the latest from the national hurricane center we will get another update coming out it will be interesting to see if anything changes with the track and there was slight east ward shift to the east that you noticed earlier today. but did you also notice we changed seasons locally. we went from summer yesterday, mid and upper 80s with lots of humidity and kind of kept the humidity and soggy conditions but the fall feel was really back today. most of the day we stayed in the 60s and that fall feel will continue tomorrow. just wanted to show you that nice strong area of high pressure will be building in. we still have showers tonight that we're dealing with and we'll have to wait a little longer f

and overnight, drier air will start coming in a lot that will start to drop the humidity a little bit and it could also create a bit of patchy fog as we go forward tonight. be ready for that. and then as thursday rolls on the day will brighten up nicely and it stays on the cool side. thanks to position of that high pressure and we're going to keep the temperature likely topping out in the low 70s here. here's a look at high temperatures for tomorrow. again, forecasting for d.c. and 74 for frederick and mannasas and fredericksburg about 76 and annapolis also coming in at 74 degrees. and so that's how things are looking and going forward i think we will keep temperatures pretty much on the cool side. even into the weekend reinforcing cool shot with high pressure building in forces that jet stream a little bit down to the south and keeps us in cool pocket of air and a lot of sunshine as we go forward between now and likely into monday. things change up a

monday we may cloud up a little bit from hurricane irma or remnant whatever is going on then depending on final track and if we are going to see rain from irma on this track it would be tuesday, wednesday time frame. that's how the weekend is looking. let me show you it features cool mornings, nice afternoon and evening temperatures and overnight temperatures heading for 50s. we have a nice stretch of weather coming and we'll be certainly doing a lot of fo focusing on gratitude for that as well as keeping a an on what is happening at irm a quick look at the weekend forecast. we'll show you that saturday is about 7, sunny, cool, and sunday 72 degrees. if you were just tuning in, wondering why i have my own weather special tonight we're having a technical difficulty here. so audio problems and we're not able to broadcast from our studio. so i'm getting the luxury of getting tell you all about weather for the next few minutes while we try to address those issues and we

for you here in a little bit. all right. 7 day forecast you can get this early. tomorrow forecasting a day that will start with a little cloud cover and transition to sunshine. don't be surprised if there's a little fog as well. 73 degrees is what we top out at tomorrow and likely head for 57 tonight. on friday, 73 degrees. sunny and nice. and i'll tell you what even the weekend looking great. monday we have clouds in the forecast and i think we start with sunshine and clouded up later in the day as what is left of irma begins to move in this direction. and tuesday, maybe irma rain for us depending on the track and what happens. especially with that track coming in later tonight in the next few days we'll see what the hurricane center does with it. some are hoping irma may do a matthew like it did last year and i think residents of florida can't bank on that and everybody has to take it seriously from pan handle of florida to carolinas. because it's just too

ignore we have to do everything we can to keep people safe and out of the way of this thing. there you go. i'm going to send it up to the control room and see i've run through my little bag of weather tricks if you want me to talk about a few other things we can try to pull them up that's my entire 7 day forecast and i'll be happy to listen for your directions on what i need to do next. i know everybody is scrambling to get things ready trying so see, oh, i have something i can show. let me pull this up here. one of the things we've been doing is looking at the individual models the european and gfs and there was agreement with them today as we were looking at that. that gives us confidence in the track of the forecast. i wanted to show you they stay really on point together, even through saturday at 4:00 breezeing across the northern portion of cuba and getting so much closer to the southeastern portion of florida. but then, as we wow that is really quite a good agreement. even into monday

15 miles an hour still wind speeds and right now it's h headed for dominican and cuba. >> okay so it looks like bahamas that's next in the eye of the storm and will continue to move up. the question is when will it turn north. and that's the main concern. because you were looking at all the preparations in miami and i talked to people in south carolina tonight. those are the areas and then as sue mentioned we have two other hurricanes form in the atlantic right now. so just a tremendous amount of concern and irma main concern for so many people in the eye of the storm. >> we'll continue to follow that and of course we want to give you other local headlines as well. and to the best of our ability, here at this point, what's going on in montgomery county that's been developing tonight they're serving for a missing olney woman. 31-year-old laura wallen a high school teacher, she is believed to be pregnant is what we're hearing and her family says they have not heard from her in days. so the search is going on for her. >> sohe

all that. >> okay. and also, coming up here, a story that really has a lot of people scratching their heads and in shock is there was -- there say man out there that exposed himself to a child and assaulted a woman at virginia home depot. if you have not heard this story it's pretty crazy and the search continues for that suspect is. >> matt ackland was there earlier tonight and they're trying to get a -- they released picture from the situation from the incident there. >> you can find they will on fox5dc.com. >> yes. all right. and also another story we are following out of montgomery county the man convicted of killing elderly woman inside her home was sentenced to life in prison today. stabler, he pleaded guilty to standing linden johnson at her home in wheaton last august and they released 911 calls that gave you an indication of the anguish and situation there. again the man by the name of

and he'll be spending the receipt of his life in prison. >> now we want to talk a little about the fallout now from hurricane irma. i know we've heard a lot about that. also on the other side of things fema and money situation, the disaster estimates there are adding to up hurricane harvey it feels like weeks ago uninsured losses could top 200 billion dollars. crazy numbers. more than hurricane cat reen 'and sandy combined. so nothing like we've seen before. >> what was striking though is after harvey there was record flooding. flooding the amount of water that engulfed houston was demonstratively more than hurricane katrina however the death toll was lower but still considering all the property damaged along the way that's going to be the main concern trying to find a way to pay out a lot of those insurance claims along the way so as they continue to° out there or cleanup from hurricane harvey and houstonre

and they continue to make their way down the alphabet. i'll tell you another thing we were pay ago tension to. and i think this came out not too long ago earlier tonight. they're still continuing to make progress on healthcare reform. congress returned to session yesterday and there is some talk that there may be another push and this one coming by the way of senator lindsay gram of south carolina and senator bill cassidy republicans they're going to try to push another healthcare reform not necessarily straight up repeal like you saw before but changing aspects of affordable care act and obamacare and senator john mccain will be on board with changes and republican lawmakers also have to find a way to come up with a plan to keep premiums from skyrocket are to 9 million americans. >> september 27 is the deadline they need to make sure they do that. so the idea of continuing billions of federal subsidies for insurers to reduce out-of-pocket costs for millions a

this because gulf of mexico, crib quan and atlantic are as warm as bath water unusually warm 87 to 85 degrees. >> may i ask you a question shawn and i were on facebook live trying to tell what the news was for today and i said there's some hope that maybe with hurricane irma some of that water may cool down a little bit. >> it should get up well and we're hoping jose doesn't have is anywhere near the energy that irma is finding and collecting all to herself. and as a matter of fact we can pick up the map here i don't know if you can see it you can certainly see the impressive demonstration we have behind us but if you can take the maps you'll be able to see all three hurricanes churning and katia looks like it will be avoiding the gulf coast thank heavens because they don't need that and they'll see that moving likely into mexico through this. >> that's bad news for mexico. >> we have that now and irma of course is what we continue to watch currently loced

puerto rico did not get a direct hit and san juan lagging behind. wind of 75. it could become a category three storm jose which is shocking considering it's behind irma and that's a big deal. we have not seen three hurricanes at the same time in atlantic since september of 2010. >> wow, wow. very unusual activity. you say irma is moving north of puerto rico. >> right no direct hit there. >> not a direct hit but still dealing with hurricane strength winds. >> it's getting better they had hurricane strength winds but not getting direct hit from 185 winds and puerto rico you probably know had great financial difficulties this is last thing they needed is this catastrophic damage so they didn't get it three little island in northern lesser -- leeward islands got hit hard barbooda and an g

barbooda and an g ila and st. martin. >> barbooda unfortunately report we've gotten from there and they're few and far between and said 90% of island he estimate is uninhabit i believe communication is down in barbooda hours and hours ago and we don't have updates. we know one person died a baby died in barbooda. >> i heard st. martin storm surge was so bad it was up to rooftops in some areas and that's a big concern for irma as well closer to the carolinas and storm surge is problem because of the way the coast is built there. we'll get back to hurricane stuff. locally we had showers around tony and those will taper off overnight. and it's lights now. as the showers leaf and drier air comes in we could see fog around in the morning and clouds possible. but overall, thursday will be

we're 8 to 7 cooler than we were last night and overnight, we head for the 50s with a few showers still around. probably tapering off after midnight, 2 a.m. and i'll describe tomorrow afternoon as sunny and cool. low 70s. 73 for d.c. 71 hagerstown and quick check of radar too, tony, spottier here in the last little while. earlier today it was pretty substantial especially eastern shore we saw lightning down by peach beaches and this was upper level disturbance coming in the front that came through last night and this front is east of us and once this disturbance goes buy it kick the showers and and we return to the big subject here we go haven't looked that in a little while and while we're talking -- >> you should be getting update. these updates come out every few hours from the national hurricane center. so sue is checking to see if we have another update that has come in. it should come in momentarily. >> 11

to see we make those track changes usually in the morning and 5bg update and 11:00 up dpait tony and here you can see the incredible presentation we were talking about this a little while ago the eye is getting smaller now and it's probably going through what we call an eye wall replacement cycle. >> is that good or bad? >> well, it's -- what may happen, it is probably good and bad. it may temporarily weaken while this cycle happening and it could potentially become stronger. but still has winds of 185 which is incredible over 30 some hours now it has not w weakened as we've been watching that. >> the fact it didn't go directly over puerto rico you know because these storms tend to lose intensity as it comes across land. i mean it's good for puerto rico it didn't go directly across but it's nothing to lessen intensity. >> exactly and nothing but bath water ahead. so what's next we think

will pass norm of the coast of the dominican rep and still conditions but won't get beat up as bad as northern lee wards d all those red areas show where we have hurricane warnings in effect and you can see that central pressure of 916 it was as low as 914 that's super low and also kind of a record-setter for pressure. sustained winds of 15 flying into it like crazy and all those red areas are hurricane warnings as it takes this path friday to 2:00 we'll see it starting to pass by and eastern tip of cuba and gets a little bit closer in the afternoon on saturday to northern and western portions of cuba and into the florida straits and close to miami going downhill late saturday night to sunday s that was significant shift across florida with the cement are but the cone is so important as you heard me say before

killed his wife outside of a high school last may while waiting for daughters. he shot and injured a man trying to help his wife. and then you may remember a day later he shot three people in the parking lot of montgomery mall killing one man. and also killing a woman in grocery store parking lot as he tried to steal her suv this was a huge story of course and we have been following it this whole time. and today the prince george county state's attorney spoke on this sentencing calling toredel ruthless. >> d.c. firefighters spend the next 18 months under house arrest he pled guilty to assault and weapons charge that happened outside his girlfriend's home. and court documents said he threatened her and another man and this happened in april and charged with reckless driving for fatal car crash that was sentenced to 60 days in jail and kept working as a d.c. firefighter and at the time this was controversial decision but the d
