this thursday, september 7th. >> all right. we'll talk this morning about a lot of news including this. president turning his back on his own party and cutting a deal with democrats. we'll have more on the debt ceiling debate and that federal aid for the victims of hurricane harvey coming up the president's son in the hot seat on capitol hill for the first time. >> all those stories and more. but the big story, of course, at nip these storms. hurricane irma now the storm is making its way through the club caribbean left a trail of destruction in its wake at last check the storm was category five with maximum sustained winds of unbelievable 180 miles per hour and gusts higher than 200 miles per hour. the storm brushed past puerto rico overnight and dumped heavy rain packed high winds. but that comes just hours after it hit several other islands just decimating them. at least ten people are dead so far and that number sadly could climb as the storm makes its way west and rescue crews continue picking up the debris left

somewhat unclear, florida will likely feel the effects in the coming days. state officials have already made emergency declarations and ordered evacuations from low-logue coastal areas. we have team coverage now irma coverage this morning for you. caitlin is in the weather center with more on the storm's track. first though annie is in our newsroom with more on the storm's impact so far and the preparations for what is to come. annie yu, good morning. gooding morning allison and all of you. with irma on the move and expected to slam florida this weekend, mandatory evacuations are underway and you have anxious residents up and down the florida coast pro pairing scrambling for basic supplies and gas. hurricane irma now battering the carribbean with record winds and heavy rain it's expected to continue churning slowly toward florida with a potential direct hit this weekend and now people across the state are rushing to prepare with evacuation orders in effect in several counties including the florida keys. >> i'm sad. i've been trying t

west for years but i'd rather be alive than, you know,. >> state and federal officials including president trump promising the government will step up before and after the storm. issuing an emergency declaration for in order and activating thousands of national guards men warning residents not to underestimate the danger. >> we'll work together to help safe lives protect families and support those in need. >> every floridian should take this seriously and be aggressive to protect their family. possessions can be replaced. your familiar confidential not. >> reporter: as people scramble to get their homes ready, there have been shortages the basic supplies like food, water and gas. highways have also been jammed up as tens of thus sands hit the road trying to get out before the storm arrives. but many are staying behind to ride it out ignoring evacuation orders and securing their homes as best they can. >> put them in store ran tied them up and put them in a safe place. we have nothing flying around.

>> we're going out. clean up when it's done. that's what we do. >> reporter: now residents in georgia and the carolinas are also bracing for potentially catastrophic impact. we can tell you the governors of georgia and south carolina have already declared states of emergency ahead of irma. also, the threat of irma has prompted american airlines and jet blue to offer $99 flights to leave florida ahead of the big storm but good luck finding a seat as they are selling quickly, and as many residents of course you can imagine scrambling to get out of the state. the discounted price comes after people accused airlines of cashing in the on the disaster and hiking up the price of tickets hea heading out of the h of irma. obviously this is a developing story and we'll continue to follow the very latest and bring you the late theft on air and online. we'll send it back up to you maureen. >> thank you annie. i was asking about the track and you're saying miami my goodness. >> south florida. i mean there's enough couldn't ken suss now south florida is bracing for what looks like major impact from a major hurricane. >> oh goodness

>> category four expected the track today from the national hurricane center and miami has been the focal point of a lot of these tracks. maureen, 25 years ago they were hit by hurricane andrew. >> i remember. >> cat five. >> homestead florida just southwest of miami i just read 80% of the homes were destroyed in that town from andrew. and this is category five storm itself. irma very different storm but it is just as strong if not stronger. catastrophically strong with winds sustain at 180 miles an hour. what you're looking now is irma approaching turks and caicos the turks and caicos islands and bahamian islands all under hurricane warnings what is they could feel very direct impacts. we've already seen the extent of the damage that irma can do as it crossed through st. maarten and us virgin islands and puerto ricco yesterday. watches and warnings coming for south in order later today. irma's track west northwest at major hurricane through a lot of open water which will help maintain its strength. it could wobble a bit. and graze the north coast of cuba but we are still looking for major hurrine

somewhere along south florida. the keys have already ordered mandatory evacuations i wouldn't be surprised if that's coming soon for miami and surrounding counties f it there looks to take more eastward track up along the atlantic and like annie said places along georgia and carolinas are brace are to potentially devastating impact as well. probably won't be as strong as south florida but they could still see along georgia coast landfalling hurricane on the order of a cat three. >> i was going to say selfishly will we scenic from irma. >> we might. and as i show our forecast right now it's so beautiful. we've got great weather and we'll have that through the weekend. i almost feel guilty saying it, maureen f we feel impacts from irma which if it takes more eastern track and goes up the carolina coastline we likely will see rain by about tuesday of next week. >> caitlin keeping her eye on irma and so is mike thomas he has facebook updates. check him out on mike thomas' facebook page for more updates op irma. his videos have been infor informative. check in with him and caitlin. we've got you covered for ts

meantime let me send it back over to you on the couch. >> nine sol see seven is the time. the one-two munch for congress. hurricane irma is tearing a path of destruction toward the united states. while recovery efforts for hurricane harvey have just gotten underway. the house of representatives approached nearly $8 billion recovery aid package for texas and louisiana. it's only the first installment of what will likely be tens of billions of dollars in federal aid to the area hit by harvey. meanwhile, hurricane irma already crashed through the carribbean and could hit southern florida any day now. the combined cost of federal aid for both hurricanes will be enormous. this all comes as washington deals with a debt limit crisis and the possible shut down threat. president trump surprised his republican colleagues yesterday making a debt ceiling deal with democrats. the destruction in houston still not fully clear as hurricane irma churns closer and closer to the united states

>> many first responders from montgomery county urban search and rescue returned home from houston yesterday and may end up having to go back down south to help irma victim. bob barnard is live in ro rockville, married with captain michael gazer down in houston to help with the relief and res rescues. bob? >> reporter: guys, we're at the warehouse for maryland task force one. as you mentioned, they had two teams down in houston. one of them on the way back got diverted to georgia to stand by for irma. so they're just finishing up their harvey duty and having to go now be prepared for irma. you see in the warehouse here they're getting their gear ready, getting their equipment ready, because they are on stand by. they haven't been activated yet. but they're standing by in case much as you mentioned captain mike glazer here team leader with maryland task force one. good morning, mike. >> how are you. >> doing very well. i see you getting your fear ready here. you had a number of people maybe half dozen who were in tennessee on their way home from texas and they've not even getting home been diverted to georgia. tell me about that. what is it

standing by to do? >> correct. one of the hazardous materials equipment packages push packages for fema and it's a four-person crew the basically designed to decontaminate any equipment or the personnel, um, gear that's been used in the containment of the environment in the waters. >> reporter: we have video. we were here last name when your boat team got back they're g getting their gear ready to head back. we have images of what you saw in houston. we're looking ahead to irma. briefly what were the reports of your guys what they saw and what they did in houston? >> they spent several days in the water affecting rescues and evacuations. they had contact with several hundred people in the angelton texas just south of houston. where they actually made a difference in the community were able to help get some of the people out of their flooded houses

>> we understand there were about 30 members of the team that went down to texas. you're standing by for the full 80 contingent. if you shall get the call from fema to go you're kind of on stand by. yesterday we have video of this yesterday we were in fairfax county where virginia task force one already been sent to ala alabama. they're maxwell air force base waiting word whether to go to puerto rico and join virginia task force two out of virginia beach which is in puerto rico or to go to florida, georgia, what have you. is that what you're expecting if you guys get activated you'll head south and be will for whatever when irma hits? in correct. they currently have pre deployed eight type one task forces to the alabama area. they are on stand by waiting on the states to quest assistance from the federal government. once though requests come in, they will move those teams forward into the areas that are affected, and they will reposition teams from -- that are still left in the system.

26 teams total in the system, so the ones that are left are on stand by now to be moved to other areas, georgia, south carolina, north carolina, and with maryland task force one now being one of the closest left on the east coast it's expected that there's a good possibility we could go maybe to the carolinas or georgia. >> reporter: thank you very much, captain, as we leave you they're getting their gear ready. one of the things mike told us with harvey, all 26 fema teams, all the task force teams were deployed in some form or fashion and now you got irma coming so they're getting ready. we'll keep watch here and let you know if they get activated but it's a lot of people that will be going and then all those jobs in the firehouses around montgomery county are going to have backfilled by on the people. a lot goes on and we're standing by and we'll let you know what happens. >> thanks very much, bob. we appreciate it. other news now here locally a high schoolteacher and mom to be missing in

other big story this morning and here at home is the search for a missing pregnant high schoolteacher. >> she's 31-year-old laura from olney, maryland. her family hasn't heard from her in days now. when her students returned to class earlier this week laura was nowhere to be found. fox5's melanie alnwick is live with the latest. mel. >> reporter: good morning, guys. neighbors here told me this morning that when they walked outside over the weekend and they saw that laura's parking space here had been empty for several days, that's when they knew that something was wrong. now, family members did confirm that she was 16 weeks pregnant and montgomery county police are now saying there's concern for her emotional well-being and her physical safety. let's show you her picture here. now, laura is described as 5 feet 5-inches tall. about 200 pounds. blond hair blue ice as you

seen on saturday now the last time she was heard from was monday, the labor day holiday, when family members received what police described as a troubling text. she was voted 2016 senior teacher of the year by her students and wild lake high school in columbia. when she didn't show up for work tuesday, the first day of school, panic set in for her friends and family. neighbors say she was excited about her pregnancy and would have never stood up her stu students. >> she's great. i mean, i just hope a few months ago with her -- helped her few months ago with her car battery. yeah, we're real close. known her since i i've been h here. she made this bracelet for me so i'm wearing it this morning on behalf of her. >> she made jewelry, right. >> yes. >> yeah. >> she was good teacher. very faithful, kind, great neighbor. >> reporter: new police say laura may have been driving her 20 f

welcome back. 9:21. erin is back with a check of the other stories making headlines this morning. hey, erin. >> good morning to you. first up, the southeast is dealing with those massive floods, almost 100 fires are burning through the west. the wildfires are now covering at least nine states. creating massive plumes of smoke and sparking health warnings over large parts of the country state of emergency has been declared in in oregon and in montana. a million acres have burned since the beginning of summer. the wildfires threatened several national parts including yosemite and glacier national park. >> don philadelphia trump, jr. scheduled to make this first appearance before congress. the questioning is expected to focus on his june 2016 meeting with a kremlin connected lawyer. the committee is expected to ask questions about the firing of james comey as fbi director this all part of the investigation

♪ back at 9:28. targeted because of the color of his skin. seattle seahawks defense end michael benefit hired a lawyer after he describes a disturb encounter with las vegas police. >> here's the deal. michael bennett says he experienced racial profiling and excessive abuse by two officers after the mayweather mcgregor fight last month. bennett posted an open letter on twitter detailing the incident. he says that he was one of many people running from what was believed to be gunshots inside a casino when he says police singled him out because he was black then an officer put a gun to his head. tmz released this short video clip showing part of the incident and police

released video as well. you can see bennett being handcuffed by the officer. overnight las vegas police described their version of events. the under sheriff says that bennett was crouched behind a gaming machine and police saw him run away and that's why officers chased him. >> i see no evidence that race played any role in this incident. in fact, as you'll notice throughout this video as i play for you, while officers were searching the cass zen know, they were able to safely evacuate many patrons of all races. >> it's a traumatic experience for me, my family, and it sucks that the country that we live now sometimes you get profiled for the color of your skin and, um, it's a tough situation for me. um, do think every police officer is bad? >> no, i don't believe that. >> bennett was detained for ten minutes and released. he's considering a civil rights lawsuit. now i said this earlier think about if this had gone the other way. we would

different conversation about michael bennett at this point because i mean if he had a gun to his head also interesting that if everybody is running because they thought there were gunshots how did he get single out? >> right. >> just curious to know more details about what actually happened there. >> and for me the police officer went they're speaking that is the sort of insidious thing about profiling if you will. i'm empty even saying racial profiling. but when you look at a group and people are running. police are humans just like we are and if you go in with different perceptions or, um, you know, you're thinking that might be somebody involved versus somebody running for their safety, and it's one of those things. you really it's hard to say what it is and what goes through the mind of an officer and so, upping, i feel for him trying to say that, um, race didn't play an issue, because in his mind i'm sure race didn't play an issue. but you just can't be in the mind of everybody when you're a police officer trying to discern who is responsible and who is victim in a situation where a lot of

strength from this time yesterday and has broken records by the way. for as strong as irma is and how long she's been able to maintain the strength of winds over 180 miles an hour going for almost 36 hours now. incredible. we also have two other hurricanes out there. i know. no rest for the weary during peak hurricane season. here we government irma right here cat five winds sustain at 180 miles an hour. right on the heels of irma we've got jose. luckily jose looks to take more of northeast ward movement and not impact the northern leeward islands that are reeling from devastating hit from category five hurricane yesterday. jose cat one. we have katia a cat one and that is in the gulf far south of texas look to go only have impacts on the east coast of mexico. that's a cat one and pretty stationary. irma is the main concern, and it's a huge concern for the u.s. the hurricane hunters that went into the eye of the hurricane couple hours ago still measuring wind speeds up to 173 miles an hour and confirming

five status. irma right now the eye of it is pushing towards turks and caicos islands and some of the ba hame man islands which are now all under hurricane warnings. so that path of irma is still expected to be west northwest through a lot of open water. warm open waters maintain the strength of this storm and by early saturday morning, cruise aig cross the coast of cuba by early sunday morning, approaching south florida including miami as category four major hurricane. miami could sustain a direct hit from major hurricane they haven't done that since 25 years ago hurricane andrew and it devastated the area.rea. serious situation for places like miami and really all of south florida. they all remain under that cone of uncertainty although there's been more consensus to take this storm up the east side of florida impacting places like west palm, places like jac jacksonville, more so than the west side tampa, naples, fort myers. but regardless, we have this cone of uncertainty because of the margin of error with the track of this storm, it will weaken as it moves off the coast

savannah, georgia, charleston, south carolina, and it could still have hurricane status and cause potentially very damaging effects ago the south east co coast. so that's irma. back home here in the forecast is fantastic making up for the rainfall yesterday. sunny today, 74. 76 tomorrow and mostly sunny. beautiful weekend. real taste of fall in the air as these temperatures are little bit below normal. normally we're still in the low 80s but we'll do low to mid 70s. and then our attention turns to next week where if we were to feel the effects of irma it would be in tuesday-wednesday time frame and probably come in the form of not tropical storm winds but still at least some rain and some cloud cover, and that could very greatly depend on the final track of irma how it moves across the southeastern u.s. if it favors that more eastern track and goes up to the carolinas, guys, then we would have greater impacts in the form of rainfall a lot like the way that harvey impacted us last saturday with a day full of rain, you know, in c

hour. storm made landfall in puerto rico overnight hours after hitting several other islands at least ten people are dead so far. that number could climb as it makes its way west while the track is still unclear, florida will likely feel the effects in the coming days. state officials have already made emergency declarations. they've ordered evacuations from low-lying coastal areas. we have team irma coverage this morning. annie is in the newsroom with more on the storm's impact so far. and how the united states is preparing first we want to get to caitlin she's in the weather center with more on the track. good morning, caitlin. >> holly good morning to you. yes, we continue to follow the incredibly powerful hurricane irma still category five storm that's strong as it gets it's broken records for how strong it is and how long it's been able to maintain that strength. barreling through the atlantic pushing through caribbean islands and headed straight for the florida coast. there it is right now. the eye of the hurricane offshore of the dominican republic they are getting lashed by

turks and caicos, ba hame man islands all bracing for what could be catastrophic impacts as the cat five store crosses right over these land masses. so as far as any hurricane warnings are they've been issued for all the bahamas and turks and caicos those are hurricane watches along the south side of cuba. cuba looks like it will see a direct impact from the storm, and as far as southern florida goes no warnings or watches yet we really do anticipate they will be coming shortly. because irma is incredibly strong and is expected to stay a major hurricane as it gets towards south in order later on this weekend. so for today, we watched turks and caicos. we watched the bahamian islands tomorrow. the north coast of cuba as we head into the weekend as early is that so saturday south florida the keys, miami could be feeling at least tropical storm force conditions out ahead of the hurricane force conditions. this is protective path as -- projected path as of 8:00 a.m.

approaching miami. the cone of up certainty widens. the second half of the weekend looks like there could direct impact from a land falling or land falling major hurricane all along the east coast of florida and then potentially up into georgia and the carolinas. they'd be up next in the sunday/monday time frame. it will likely weaken this storm as it crosses any land masses but still, they could be seeing devastating impacts, too. places miami, this storm has just been -- it's had its sights set on me miami for a couple of days. that's why they're making preparations they should be in south florida. okay. back here beautiful morning. 67 in d.c. right now. it's gob to be a great afternoon. and we are actually going to be enjoying very quiet and very nice weather through weekend. will irma impact us? that is yet to be determined. we have to see how irma moves through the atlantic how it inter acts with florida and the rest of the southeast coast but if we do see impacts in the form of some rain, that would be next tuesday

and you know try to get -- extra bell up and down the in order coast get their homes ready rather there have been shortages of basic supplies like food, water and gas. >> put them in storage and put them in save place so we have nothing flying around. no debris. >> we're riding it out. clean up when it's done. that's what we do. >> reporter: residents in georgia and the carolinas are also bracing for the monster storm. the governors of georgia and south carolina have already declared states of emergency ahead of irma. also the threat of irma has prompted american airlines as well as jet blue to offer $99 nights to leave florida ahead of irma but good luck finding a seat because they are selling fast. people accused of airlines of cashing in on the disaster and hiking up ticket prices heading out of the path of irma. search and rescue teams in our area gearing up to assist. we have crews from maryland and
