reporting in downtown miami, joe waldman, fox news. tonight we learned two florida law enforcement officers were killed early this morning deputy julie bridges she was on way home from helping at evacuation center and joseph ozmanned was headed into work when the two collided head on. it's unclear if weather was a factor in the crash. >> it seems no part of state of florida is untouched by this massive storm and problems will just continue into the night and into the morning. >> europe absolutely right are. not only that, lauren, but this storm is really going to start to give its impact to many other states across areas of the south and so we are really watching it closely. already parts of that area are feeling effects of this massive hurricane. let's take a look now at infrared satellite shot and show what you is it happening. one of the things going on is

that the certainty of circulation is leaning to the right now doesn't mean impact is less but there could be more happening in terms of central portion of state as well as into areas north a little more northeast. so definitely deeping a close eye on that. and other thing going on to the south is areas to the east they're starting to see drier air move in and that is actually a good things for areas to the south. it does not mean they will be out of the clear in terms of winds and high surf and all the danger that comes with all this including flooding. >> we're looking at category two hurricane right now winds 105 miles an hour moving north at 14 miles an hour an by the time it does move its way over tampa as we move to late hours of tonight and early tomorrow morning it will be category one. it will hold hurricane status right up until at least the early hours of tuesday, late monday night before it becomes remnant low pressure system. but its impact

far north as areas of kentucky and tennessee and georgia getting a big impact from it and as far as east as the carolinas and spaghetti models stay on track with it they're pretty much in agreement in terms of all of this and looking at plenty of rainfall with this high sure. dangerous winds they spread far and wide. i'll have more coming up on the conditions and just how we may or may not be impacked in a bit. lauren. thank you, gwen. a massive cleanup underway in cuba and several other caribbean countries devastated by hurricane irma while no deaths reported in cuba irma caused widespread damage. similar scene playing out in st. martin the island is divided france on one side and netherlands on the other and 7 owe% of homes were damaged or destroyed when irma came ashore as category 5 storm. >> hundreds are trapped on s st. martin and trying to get out. state department evacuated 120

1200 americans so far and hopes to get more out tom tomorrow. state department put out a tweet that says area evacuation from st. martin concluded for day and it's trying to continue those evacuation flights tomorrow but they're not confirmed yet. >> evacuations continue in virgin island this is showing members of navy and marine corps flying outpatients from st. thomas and st. john. navy says helicopters flew out 50 patients so far and delivered more than 17,000 pounds of food water as well as medical supplies to the virgin islands. >> and we're seeing incredible images of destruction from french caribbean island of s st. bart. french officials estimate hurricane irma caused close to a billion and half dollars damage to st. bart and s st. martin. authorities say this is biggest natural sdaingt to hit a french territory in 35 ye years. >> earlier today vice-president mike pence visited fema headquarters washington

those gusting winds and finally for the myers this video is from 20 minutes inland. it's hard to believe this is not right on the gulf of mexico but the water you you see here is supposed to be still lake. jen stacey shared this us with she lived in florida more than a decade and said she never seen anything like this be before. >> this is inland lake not the gulf of mexico. this is normally a flat, flat, look tat now. these are huge waves coming you cannot see but we've seen two different boats sink across from us. the dock over there completely broken off going down this lake. >> i lived down here almost 11 years and been through a couple tropical storms and never seen anything like this unprecedented. please pray for florida. >> and to let you know the people that shared this video with us tell us they are safe. now irma taking aim at the tampa bay area it weakened and forecast to arrive there

crews are on the scene working to dig a hole in the front yard of this house to cut the gas off. i'm told due to the hoarding conditions found inside the meter to shut off the gas is basically inaccessible and that's why the gas line has to now be cut from the outside. unfortunately, one man is dead and another taken to a nearby hospital. and this fire started just after 4:00 this evening. fire crews got a call that someone was trapped inside this burning house and when they arrived they found smoke coming from all three floors and 31-year-old man who lives at this house off dan bury road ed met crews at the front door. he luckily managed to escape the fire but told firefighters his friend was still trapped inside. that resident was taken to a local hospital with both smoke inhalation and minor burns and investigators eventually discovered a man's body in the basement of this house. and now the fire is out. but crews say the crowd

conditions they found inside this homemade the fire fight much more difficult. >> specifically in basement, there were what they described as hoarding conditions where there was lots of boxes and materials and stuff like that piled up. which made it difficult for them to get in and search. it also added to the fire load. there was a slim possibility that there could have been some kind of i don't know if it was ammunition or something like that in the home. so far we have not located anything like that in the h home. >> reporter: we did see fire and explosives. investigators on scene earlier this afternoon were checking that home for any ammunition for explosive material inside. however as you heard anone was found. the cause of the fire has not been determined yet and there into update on the man taken to the hospital and no identification of the man who died. we're live in bethesda,

hemphill, "fox5 local news". tonight this man is in custody in connection with a fatal shooting that happened saturday night in fred fredericksburg. cortez antonio mills is charged with second degree murder 26-year-old antoineet anne beverly was found dead in a car on palmer street. mills is held without bond tonight. the search continues for a pregnant teacher missing from montgomery county. laura wallen was last heard from on text message september 4. police say she sent a tro troubling message to a family member. she then failed to show up to first day of school at wild lake high school on tuesday. and her car was later found in howard county. not far from the school. the 31-year-old is four months pregnant. and the man accused of setting his pregnant girlfriend on fire inside of her maryland home on friday night is is being extradited to prince george county. police say la quinn phillip

two cranes and we were woken up 8 a.m. this morning with bang bang bang on front door told by security to retreat to a shelter within the hotel. there's a ballroom. so we all went there and asked why we were being shuttled there they said there's a hurricane you idiot and beyond that there were windows breaking and so they said get out of dom and head to sh shelter. we said sure. so that has been the story here. this is end result. we're now waiting for the southern bands of hurricane irma to pass through. our producer who is astute with radar telling us it should be happening any time coming from south to north. you can see the current of the water moving in that direction now. so we expect to get blasted at least one more time. >> we heard there was possibly another crane you were talking about that a third crane maybe collapsing it's difficult to take those down it takes two weeks which is why they were not taken down before the storm there was not time. when you

>> good an the first thing they need to do once they get down there is connect with the utilities we're supporting which in this case is florida power and light. so once they connect with them what usually happens is each of our crews is paid with a crew that is from the area that we're supporting so they can go together and help with the restoration. that's typically how it works. but at the end of the day we're following the lead of the utility that we're supporting which in this case is florida power and light. >> a massive job ahead. 3.3 million people. is there a priority where you need to start? >> yeah, that's going to really depend on the impact you know i envision there will be parts of the electric distribution system that will have to be completely rebuilt because you'll have a lot of downed polls and downed wires and downed trees and what usually happens

it's hot down there now it's 87. i talked to my parents who lost power over this hurricane they were going to bed with no powder they had to crack the window it was windy but hot inside the house. that's one example of millions i'm sure they're going through the same tonight. >> got the lines at the grocery stores and food starts to spoil it's no if you remember. >> hopefully all these power companies can get down there and try to start working back up. i was listening to some folks talking about the power grids that's one thing they look at first to make sure large power grids did not lose powder and start with suburban homes and make things somewhat better than they are currently. this is going to be a long affair for the state of florida, right. >> not only florida. we'll see this system move its way more north as well and so we have a the love states impacted as a result of this hurricane. it is a massive storm. and its reach will be far and wide. and already, that has started to happen. as we can seat outer bands really starting to impact many areas including

areas on the east coast adds charleston is already seeing flooding. take a look here. this will actually pick up speed and it's going to start to move the way north over the next 24 hours or so and faster than it's moving now which is roughly about 14 miles an hour as it heads way through to north. category two storm winds 105 miles an hour and an update coming in at 11:00. new advisory. we'll see what the changes are with that as that becomes available us to. in the meantime, tampa this will go over tampa as category one hurricane. hold hurricane status up until late monday night to early tuesday before it becomes rel nant low pressure system and look at the cone of uncertainty and this is area that will get the biggest impact across this area however it's even without on the exterior of this cone of impact other areas get impacted as well and storm happens to be massive. and the models have been pretty much in agreement with the tra

the center of circulation has started to move a little bit leaning a little to the east now. so, that's another thing that bears watching. we're seeing drier air coming into the lower southern eastern portion of this system as well right now. so that's another interesting factor. but, as it moves its way through take a look at rain that will be with it. also equals producing tornadoes is another factor here and stretching to tuesday and parts of tennessee and kentucky, georgia also gets hit hard with this and then a hot of this rain movesit way off north and northeast as well. tornao watchings and warnings in effect and already reports of of that activity tropical and hurricane storm force warnings and watches as the storm surge continues to move its way through and in some areas expect it to be 15 pete feet more more dangerous storm surge and that's one of the main killers in a hurricane. impact will be widespread. as i mentioned tna
