>> they hey they're in post season series. no more one game things. we'll talk all about it. glad you're with us on monday morning. it is september 11th we have a lot to talk about september11th related gone d day. >> also ahead the redskins they may have lost. but the nats are still making d.c. sports fans proud the team clinching their second division title in two years. they're fourth in six. we'll show you some of the highlights from the celebration and talk about what comes next. hopefully more wins coming up a little later. fingers crossed for that. first at 9:00 we have to talk about irma. and right now the storm is losing steam as it makes its way into georgia this morning. it was downgraded to category one hurricane then tropical storm with wind speeds at about 75 miles an hour. but the danger is not over. the storm made landfall in florida over the weekend as category one storm i believe it was. yes, did it. category four storm excuse me with winds as high as 145 miles an hour. and the storm is so massive it completely covered the entire state. at least five deaths blamed on th

victims include two police officers, ten office thousands of people left the evacuation zones on the coast. they remain in shelters this morning. nearly 5 million people have no power. rescue crews are on the ground in the hardest hit and underwater areas. looking for people trapped or stranded in their homes, and as the sun now rises and the storm heads north, we're getting clearer picture at some of the damage it left behind. president trump who owns property in the state has already issued a disaster declaration and plans to visit to see the damage up close later this week. all right. the light of day giving us a better sense of just how bad irma hit has been. now, we're already getting some indication and we'll start down in the keys with some storm chasers that road out irma down there tweeting out these pictures as they made their way from key west back up towards marathon. you can see the road heavily damaged, also damaged vehicles off the roads lots of trees and debris down all over the place. now in miami today, part of irma's cleanup will be securing at least three massive cra

well as cleaning up after all of that water and inundated parts of down down miami. on the gulf coast drone video showing the damage in naples near the -- near where irma made landfall yesterday. some homes were destroyed. others heavily damaged in flooded neighborhoods, and up in tampa, where irma storm surge is not just coming on the back side of the storm, strong waves are filling the bay that yesterday sat empty as irma had suck all the water out. let's get over to steve now he's over with mike thomas to talk more about this. >> talk a little bit more about that point, too. we can combine it. when you saw all that water that got suck out of tam a that water has to come back in as a huge surge. but that's kind of like the pictures of key west with that highway that was all ripped up. that was from storm surge as well. >> right. the kind of damage storm surge can do. i mean you're pulling the ocean essentially up and over on to land. yeah, it's he can treatmently dangerous one of biggest dangers with hurricane is more the surge sometimes than the

>> right now we have the storm obviously this morning a few hours ago downgraded to tropical storm. >> um-hmm. >> not nearly as powerful at it was one was. >> fears we're still watching is flooding a lot of heavy rain with it much it's not harvey levels of flooding but we do have locations like jacksonville under flash flood emergencies this morning thanks to all that heavy rain that came through and heavy rain moving newspaper georgia and up into south carolina as well. so still dangers there as i mentioned storm surge a big danger as well we mentioned naples earlier they had the strongest winds 142 miles an hour. that's category four storm th there. margo island 130. lilly 122. miami in order not as bad but 99 to 100 miles an hour winds that will still do damage you saw those cranes down. again this morning downgraded just recently as of 8:00 o'clock to a tropical storm. so it been ten days as hurricane before being able to weaken to tropical storm force at 70 miles an hour. it will continue pushing north and east up into the southeast. farther it

the weaker it will get. the effects will still be felt throughout the course of this week we still have the threat for showers and thunderstorms even in our forecast here thanks to irma hanging out. we won't get anything like this which is very gusty winds, gusting to 47 in orlando this hour. up to 36 now tampa. tampa this morning was down in the 20s as the hi passed through and now those gusts are start its starting to pick up as the back side of the storm wraps around. storm surge ten to 15 feet bottom of south west florida as you move up towards tampa three to 5 feet and kind of the coast of both georgia and northern florida there potentially five to 10 feet and right now there's no storm surge in northern florida, steve, because those winds are still blowing offshore. as the storm gets north and winds come out of the back. >> the good news in the pink areas at the bottom where the storm surge was the heft yesterday that's the least populated part of florida. >> ever grades. once you get south of naples not very heavily populated areas down there. fortunate in some way that was the they are got hit with the heaviest surge. >> wisdom,

the loft to you. >> thanks mike and steve. curfews were in place this weekend in much of south in order that didn't stop looters in ft. lauderdale. police arrested nine people they say were caught on camera stealing sneakers and other items from sporting goods stores and a pawn shop during the hurricane. looters were also out in miami yesterday and the police there making example of them tweeting this picture of several suspects in a jail cell. the caption, thinking about looing? ask these guys how that turned out hash tag stay indoors. >> as irma continues to lash in order we are still waiting for a clearer picture of just how widespread the destruction is. one of the big concerns is of course power outages. this morning hundreds of pepco and bge are sending crews down to help restore that power. this is fema begins to assess how a big mess has been left behind. fox5's mel know alnwick live from fema headquarters with that. good morning, mel. >> reporter: good morning. before t

positioned teams in the carolinas, georgia, alabama and of course florida also providing service to the seminole nation down there as well. we now know they have meals and water ready for millions of people. they're also carrying tarps and blankets and cots. whatever they need the fema response the federal response to not only irma but harvey not letting up yet. >> irma may have weakened but it remains a powerful force that could still devastate major population centers. the earliest pictures from hard hit areas show structural damage and flooding. >> the bad news is that this is some big monster. but i think we're very well coordinated. >> reporter: president trump returning from camp david yesterday after a cabinet meeting there. vice-president mike pence visiting fema headquarters where resources are being put to the test. the agency's director telling fox news that the relief effort will extend well beyond florida. >> as this thing moves inland that

inland rains are going -- are going to persist as well. >> motion is adopted. >> reporter: and we saw the handwriting last week as congress pass add $15 billion aid package to deal with hurricane harvey. that will help fema but not for long. >> that's going to run out in a few weeks. so we're going to be back doing special emergency appropriations in the middle of october. >> reporter: and the costs of both storms are combined are likely to be in the hundreds of billions of dollars. >> it's going cost a lot of money. right now we're worried about lives, not costs. >> reporter: and we should also mention fema is on the ground in puerto rico and us virgin i'd land they were also very heavily hit. they have a full complement of resources and specialist teams there right now. we know that the us -- fairfax urban search and rescue team did make its way to st. thomas overnight into the morning to help there. also, the u.s. is planning to

evacuations from the island of saint march 10. there are many americans who were trapped there that could not get out. live at fema headquarters melanie alnwick fox5 local news. >> thanks mel. appreciate the update. excelon has sent 1800 utility crews from its affiliates like bge and pepco to help. that number expected to increase in the coming days. power crews from pepco and bg and e in our region are head do you know to florida as we speak. they will help store power once the storm is over. crews connected to get there by later today or tomorrow. >> hurricane irma is also impacting congress. the house will not vote on any legislation today because so many members will be back in their home districts. and some are unable to travel back to d.c. because of the storm. the house majority leader has rescheduled to tuesday evening at earliest those votes. >> we'll much very much irma coverage coming up on good day. at 9:30 we'll take you live to orlando. phil shoe man has been reporting all morning long after driving

pentagon and another one crashed in shanksville pennsylvania. >> ceremonies are taking place. bob barnard is live this morning at joint base andrews with what happened there this morning. hey, bob. >> reporter: hey, holly. good morning to you guys. you see flag here behind me. we're at heritage park just inside the main gate at joint base andrews. they had ceremony here that started 8:00 o'clock. there were uniformed and civilian staffers from join base andrews some of their units were dispatched to the pentagon in the moments after the attacks 16 years ago. to help with the less queue and recovery. and then you'll recall the f16s were dispatched from here to provide kind of like protection around this capital region because we didn't know what else was coming neglect. i can show you fed yo tape just after the ceremony began 8:00 o'clock. 2f16s part of the 113th fighter wing here. the d.c. air national guard flew overhead, and again, these were some of the jet that is

dispatched in the minutes, hours, weeks and months after the terrorist attacks that included the one at the pen pentagon. can also show you a live picture over at the pentagon memorial. president donald trump first lady, melania trump heading there for this morning's ceremony. they'll be joined by families of those who were killed on the jet and in the pentagon, and also dignitaries pentagon military and civilian as well. so that ceremony starts at 9:35 the time of the attack there. also, can show you some tape from the white house this morning at 8:45. roughly the time 8:46 when the first jet hit the first tower the north tower in new york c city. there was moment of silence. the president and first lady attending that ceremony there on the south lawn with white house staffs as well. and then we'll take you back live to new york. lower manhattan whereas you mentioned a moment ago, relatives of the 2600 people

♪ 9:27 on this monday. irma still losing steam as it makes its way north. the storm is now tropical storm tataking aim at atlanta, georgi. right now the outer bands are blowing into georgia and people in florida meanwhile are still left dealing with rain, flooding and high winds. >> nearly 6 million customers are in the dark an estimated 200,000 people are riding out the storm in shelters. >> and right now in orange county outside of orlando evacuations are underway as flood waters rise. all right. let's bring in mike thomas right now. because we need update on the weather and we're talking about

massive damage down there in florida. >> right. absolutely. one of things we got to stress, too, just becaus the storm is no longer a hurricane, the dangers don't go away. you still have wind. people are still going to lose power. you have storm surge which is a big concern just kind of now starting in tampa. and then we also have rain. we have a lot of heavy rain the entire state i've never seen this before entire state of georgia is under flash flood watch. whole thing. >> that is rare. >> i heard you guys talking about it earlier. the storm suck the water out. >> uh-huh. >> just pushes it back in and that causes a lot of the flooding. >> the storm itself it doesn't suck the water out it's the winds blowing across the bay that push it out and because the winds are so persistent out of the one direction, it holds the water back sort of. >> is it true i've been listening to lot of people talk about this obviously it's horrific and the damage is bad and it's widespread and i don't want to lessen it in any way ahead a lot of people say we did dodge a bullet in some instances. it wasn't as bad as it

>> remember what did it do to the leeward islands. it strepped them bear. i saw amazing satellite images where it was green one day and then after irma passed it stripped it completely bear. just from the amount. 185 miles an hour winds second strongest storm ever recorded in the atlantic without allen. allen was in the gulf not in the atlantic. and allen had 190 miles an hour winds. 185 serious storm. it hit naples we 142 miles an hour gust. it could have been a five. it could have been like andrew it just kind of piled drove up florida and did a lot more damage. little bit of a bullet dodged there. so here's the latest rainfall totals. bullet still need to be dodged in terms of rainfall because we have had a lot of it. melbourne almost 15-inches of rape there fort pierce. 13 and a half ft. lauderdale. almost 9-inches of rain. these amounts are not harvey amounts but they're still coming in very short amount of time. about 24 hours. 4-inches of rain miami beach will 24 hours will give you flooding and flooding c

georgia the and tire state and i've seen maryland under flash flood watches all the way before but georgia is a big state all under flash flood watches this morning northern florida and southern portions of south carolina again entire state there under flash flood watches as irma continues to pull moisture in off to the north. good news we're starting to dry thing out little bit across south florida which is good. winds down to 70 miles an hour. i wish we could say irma was the only thing we have to watch and once it's said and done it's over but we have jose sitting out in the atlantic as well. look, it's dangerously close to be honest with you. good news here it's not expected to go any farther east at least not yet. we'll talk about jose in a minute. let's start with irma. winds of 70 miles an hour tropical storm going to continue to push off to the north and to the west here. it's going to hang out for a few days. because of that we'll have clouds. we'll have the chances of showers and thunderstorms not today but as we get into your tuesday, wednesday, thursday and all the way through the weekend we'll have the chance of popping some showers and storms each and every day. none of those days is a wash out, though.

there's the early hours of wednesday which could linger into wednesday morning with showers in the forecast there. after that, we do get a little warmer each and every day bringing the chance for at least pop up shower or storm thanks to irma bringing us a little bit of southern humidity. tropical like feel there with temperatures in the 80s. a little unsettled compared to our friends down south we'll make off rather easy. >> all right. thank you mike. >> thanks for that. speaking of our friends down south we want to go to fill shoe man life in orlando this mor morning. phil, good morning to you. give us a sense of how things are right where you are right now. >> reporter: well, i can tell you things are much better this morning. i'm actually seeing a few rays of sunshine over orlando. now this is the kind of damage we're going to be seeing as day break continues. heavy wind damage overnight. knocked down trees, there's still hundreds of thousands people without power but the good news that the

sense of danger that life-threatening rain those hundred mile per hour winds that we've seen over the past 24 hours from irma are gone. the storm is losing intensity as it moves farther inland. now, here in orlando, still very tense. people are still out of their homes. you can hear fire engines coming by. damage assessment is what's going to be happening today. the airports are still shut down. disneyworld still shut down only the sixth time in its 45 year history. so the sense here is that the immediate danger has passed, holly, wisdom, steve, maureen, but irma is not done with florida just yet. >> phil, i know the concern that our meteorologist was saying was along those lines, you know, tampa could still see surge on the back end of the storm as it continues to kind of double back around. >> right. >> and you know jacksonville, georgia all could see some surges as well. are

orlando or are you going to be on the move again. >> i know you just drove down from jacksonville earlier. >> reporter: yeah. we're going to see what happens later on in the day. we'll be here at least throughout the morning. it's 9:30 eastern we're still doing live shots for our friends back in california. so we're going to wait and see. it's possible we'll move into the tampa area but i think what is important to stress is that the forecast for catastrophic damage while certainly something that we're necessary and that people paid attention to, well, that didn't happen. i think when we look back at this storm they'll say they did great job of preparation of evacuation. they prepared for the worst and the worst passed by here and that the state while suffering a strong below relatively speaking came through this with little damage. >> i just had a quick question. i don't know if you you've covered on the tropical storms or hurricanes i'm

have. comparing it is this the worst you've seen or do you think people really did dodge a bullet as we've been saying this morning in some areas? >> reporter: yeah. this is certainly up there. i mean, when we drove yesterday from jacksonville -- jac jacksonville beach area, beautiful area normally up on the northeast part of the state, show you some of this area as we talk. we drove south about 100, 150 miles in heavy, heavy rain. some of the strongest rains and winds i've experienced. the kind of thing where you have to pull off the highway because just too dangerous. even with the wipers on high. you know, you've been in those conditions you can't even see 5. fortunately we had a big sturdy suv. so that enable to us keep going. obviously went really slow. so this is right up there. but it moved through here relatively quickly over the past 12 hours, and that's great news. i mean the skies are clearing now. people are going try to get back into their homes. one of the big issues is going to be resupplying
