millions of people still without power. most until georgia and florida. analysts say the storm likely caused at least $50 billion in damage here in the us but luckily that is for less than the earlier estimates. >> florida now is in cleanup mode as tens of thousands of people who left make their way back home. fox's lauren blanchard has more on how people are dealing with the storm's aftermath. >> reporter: irma's damage across florida certainly could have been worse but it's still going to take a lot of time for the state to rebuild. >> residents across florida taking stock of the carnage. >> we got really hit pretty hard, um, we've got lots of wind of where, lots of broken trees. >> reporter: irma still soaking parts of the southeast while the sunshine state begins the cleanup. there's no telling how long the flooding will last in places like jacksonville or hundreds of miles away near fort myers where the waters are still rising. >> it's just flooding it just won't stop it just keeps coming. >> reporter: further south in the florida keys residents trying to get

with police after being denying re-entry into their neighborhoods. >> right now we don't know where to go. >> the issued us hurricane passes and we put all our faith in hurricane passes and these hurricane passes are worthless if we can get in. >> reporter: homeowners in miami ran into the same problem monday. turned away despite waiting for hours. officials say they need to keep the streets clear to work on restoring power to the millions of floridians without electricity. >> we don't want people driving around oning into trees, god for bid power lines, gas leaks. >> reporter: many of those homeowners will be allowed back into their houses today. miami and orlando airports pl planning to reopen with limited service. in tam parks lauren blanchard, fox news. as those airports reopen, the folks who evacuated to washington area will be looking for flights back. fox5's melanie alnwick live at reagan national keeping tabs on their departures this morning. good morning, mel. >> reporter: good morning, guys. limited basis is absolutely correct because what

from the arrival and departures boards this morning even though miami, orlando and some of the other airports tampa and ft. lauderdale have opened we're seeing mostly cancellations on the board. flights right here jet blue and southwest orlando canceled. over here, we see a little bit of a different picture. you have some flights that have been canceled but then others like this one to wet palm beach, that one is on time. so that airport is one that people we know have been taken -- there's a jet blue flight up there at fort lauderdale that one also canceled. that's the situation all across the board. very very few flights getting out this morning. we only saw three getting out. jacksonville, ft. lauderdale, wet palling many and we have four flights on the board getting out. two airports that remain closed are key west and naples. key west, of course, as we know took the brunt every that storm as it came on shore as a category four there. we really

inn link yet of what the damage is like at the key west airport. i can tell you at the naples airport, they were recording wind gusts there of more than 140 miles an hour. so they are expecting some roof damage, some structural damage there. so those airports right now they're saying that they may reopen friday. but i think in some cases that could be little bit of wishful thinking and we're really going to have to wait and see how long it's going to take for those airports to get their operations back and going across the board today, 2500 cancellations the majority of them flights going into florida. d.c. a here losing about 75 flights. bwi losing about 80 flights and overall throughout the storm, about 12,000 flights were canceled and all of that mop up effect is what is really kind of having a ripple effect. not only here at d.c. a but at airports across the country. live in reagan national, melanie alnwick, fox5 local news. >> all right, mel, thank you for that. of course

and the scope of damage in the us being assessed. focus is once again on what the hurricane did in the carribbean. there are stories of food running out, looting and have i lense. now dominating the headlines from the hardest hit islands. take look at just how much devastation that they suffer. nasa releasing these before and after pictures of several carribbean island. this first one showing all of the us virgin islands you can see just how much of the lush green vegetation is now gone. now this is virgin goore in the british virgin islands one place that's estimated to have 90% of buildings damaged or plain out destroyed. check out the island of barbuda the landscape almost all brown now antigua faired little bit better. in the carribbean cuba dealing with lot of flooding at least ten people killed in cub ba by irma and french carribbean of st. maarten will get a visit from french president mack krohn. announced doubling of troops to st. maarten to about 2200. it's in an evident to restore order to

here in washington. and we can expect daytime highs in the mid 70s. that's all irma's remnants. stretching all the way back into arkansas and reaching the carolinas there. so lots of rain shower activity most of it on the light side locally. and we'll throw out there not only we'll have clouds today and temps in the 70s but it's possible a few of these showers could sneak north later this afternoon. so in isolated shower risk later today. little better chance we'll get houghs showers tonight and early tomorrow as some of that tropical air can start working through. 75 today. again, a few spotty showers this afternoon. take your umbrella just in case i'm not sure you'll need it i think we'll have mostly just cloudy skies and relatively cool temps for this time of year. okay. plenty more on hurricane jose and we'll talk about the remnants of irma and when they'll pay a visit to us coming up guys. back to you. >> 9:09n other news this morning it's been more than 40 years since the lyon sisters disappeared during a trip to montgomery county mall. they were never seen again. but some possible closure to the case could

as fox5's paul wagner was first to report last week dark this man, suspect lloyd lee welch will likely plead guilty. that case just got underway moments ago and paul is in the bedford, virginia, courtroom right now with the latest. bob barnard is live in wheaton where the girls went missing with more on the long road to justice for catherine and sheila and bob, we'll start with you. >> reporter: yeah, maureen, pretty wild when you think about it for the last 42 years any time people who have lived in this area for any period of time drove by the former wheaton plaza now westfield wheaton mall you'd think oh my gosh that's where those girls disappeared in the mid 1970s. that case has never been solved. >> well this morning we believe that is going to turn a page after 42 years. it was march 25th, 1975 when sheila and catherine lyon went missing here. today in courtroom lloyd lee welch age 60 who is currently or was imprisoned in delaware

gir there is in the courtroom in bedford, virginia, was supposed to go on trial for the lyon sisters murder today's. but instead there's a motions hearing. we believe he's about to plead guilty in the courtroom right now john mccarthy the state's attorney from montgomery county. also, john and mary lyon the parents of sheila and catherine. if this goes the way we expect it to, we may hear from john lyon who the father was a wmal radio personality a long-time victims advocate here in montgomery county. you would see him at the courthouse but in the last number of years they've pretty much remained silent as lloyd lee welch who had spoken to police in the weeks after the disappearance but was never charged in until two years ago has now been caught up in this case. and basically, the bodies still haven't been found. authorities a couple years ago searched taylo

people expected lloyd welch, jr., did in fact plead guilty to two counts of murder in the disappearance and deaths of sheila and catherine lyon. those young sisters vanished from wheat tan mall back in 1975. their bodies have still never been found. the parents of she'll land catherine were in the courtroom for the plea this morning and so is our paul wagner. he will join us shortly but again the heed line the breaking news, lloyd welch pleads guilty to two counts of murder in the death of the lyon sisters more than 40 years ago. 9:22 is our time right now. allison is back with some of the other stories making headlines on this tuesday morning hey, al. >> hey, holly. first up just incredible video. this is out of connecticut. a pilot who apparently veered off course slammed into a tree then crashes into a parking lot. here it is. well a am amazingly 79-year-old pilot only had minor injuries. officials are trying figure out what caused the plane to go down. but we are look nothing

high pressure off to the north. and that's going to generally keep us dry. although you can see the clouds slipped in overnight. we'll be mostly cloudy today. there might be a little bit of sunshine here and there and might be a shower this afternoon but again any shower activity we get will be on the light side. high pressure and winds out of the east and that's been keeping us dry blocking irma's remnants from getting in here. eventually high pressure loses out and warm front comes through later tonight, that will be a better chance for a shower and eventually as that remnant low works through here by later wednesday and thursday that will be our best chance for some showers associated with irma. there we are at 9:00 o'clock tonight. ? unfortunate a couple of showers, and a few showers overnight there we are at 6:00 a.m. a few showers around tomorrow as that warmer airs moves through. quickly jose 75 miles an hour winds cat one getting sheared. going to do a little loop de loop it looks like it stays out to see early next week. but we got to watch that track it will be kind of parallelling the coast early next week as category one hurricane. i know. it's hurricane season. peak of hurricane season was yesterday. okay. seven day, 75od

>> reporter: well, as you can tell, bright sunshine it's going to be a hot muggy day. a typical florida day. of course, this is not typical. this just one dramatic example of of the damage that irma left behind as it moved out yest yesterday. today is day two of what they're calling recovery and damage assessment, wisdom. the biggest issue here remains as you mentioned lack of power. but there are crews from all over the country that have come into florida. they're working on that. best case scenario it will be days, worst case scenario it could be weeks people without power that includes of course air-conditioning and major factor for the comfort level of folks. we're in central florida, of course, orlando. home of disneyworld. that's going to be reopening today. universal studios, florida, that will be reopening today. the airports are reopening on a limited basis. schools are still closed. one real problem for people that evacuated south florida and are trying to move

of gas. the gas stations are out of supplies. hopefully thank kearse will be able to get back -- tankers will be able to get back to this area and restock the fuel tanks. so it's a day of transition, a day of recovery. flooding waters that impacted some of the homes outside of orlando those have receded. and all things considered, wisdom, you saw the warnings of the catastrophic potential of irma over the past several days from the governor and other emergency officials. the feeling here is that they survived it all things considered fairly well. >> phil, we mentioned this in the intro about the people we see the video actually right here of people trying to get back and either get to their things or trying to assess the damage of their homes. and the officials in some cases are not letting them back in. has there been any kind of update or resolution to that situation because we understand on both sides people don't want to -- the officials don't want people to just come into the neighborhood and the people do want to get in and get their stuff whatever they can fine

have seen this vision coming out of my mind or not? >> well, i've work with some really get direct, jay coach and lee daniels. i was fortunately i was moved in those move throughs through production and post production which isn't always common. there would be a point where i would try to convince them to do things maybe differently and they're the directors and they have the final say. so i thought, well f i want to have the final say, i guess i got to direct the movie. >> how do you feel in retrospect now that the movie is out now. it's been out. in the film festivals now get ready for the big release? would you watch it now because i'm sure as director you watched this 11,000 times probably. now when you see it do you feel good about the final project or feel good this one is done and out now. >> i feel great. i'm really proud of the film. i think it's a beautiful story. i think it's a fascinating st story. and you know the tale of jd salinger writing cattle cher in the rye him going to world war ii getting traumatized and wrighting this book, you know, this famous teenager this trouble teenage

and i just thought, that's a terrific story that deserves to be told. >> jd salinger was somebody who disappeared from the attention after he found fame. he kind of disappeared for while. you're focusing on the earlier part of his life. was there anything else that drew you to the particular story i'm sure in your mind you're probably -- you have that writer director creative mind you're saying i can take anything and make it great story out of it. why this one to put this much time, energy, love, passion into money into this? >> well, i think very personal to me as writer myself. and seeing that this jd salinger famous as recluse was this young man in new york city as ambitious as a all my writer friends and myself and remained me of so many people i knew i thought it was beautiful way to drama ties what it means to be a writer. and the journey of the artist and the creative process and to be able to tell that story by not only telling the story of how the catcher in the rye was written, but the fact that it came from monda

fight world war ii and was writing his book in world war ii, and then kept writing even afterwards when he had clear ptsd symptoms and from all of that trauma ends up writing a book that would inspire people for decades and decades to come. that's the ultimate example of what it means to be a writer is jd salinger we look back in the clip we saw when we go back to the theirs and fours the sce scenery, the wardrobe. it's fascinating to watch. do you have to put yourself in that 30, 40s mindset as director as well. >> yeah, you certainly study it and i study it quite a bit. but i also wanted the story to feel time less. to me his journey the journey of an artist creating his masterpiece could have taken place in any time period. so as far as the period goes, it was about making the period feel real. but not having it drip with period and making it feel like this is a story of a soldier who then wrote a masterpiece. >> one more question we'll get back to before we get on
