>> we're still talking about ir ma's impact. the tomorrow was downgraded to a tropical depression but it still packing some pretty heavy winds and rain . in florida the cleanup is underway. of course irma or what's left of it. the storm has been downgraded to a trop l california depression. i is still on the move. it's target ing parts of tennessee and the southeast. but as the skies clear in florida we're getting a better look at death and destruction the former hurricane left hin. here's fox's joel waldman. >>reporter: in south florida the keys were the hardest hit while at miami international airport flights are resuming on a limited basis as the cleanup process continues. this is going to be a frustrating

it's going to take sometime to allow people back into their homes particularly in the florida keys. in places like charlie ton south carolina it now has that area dealing with flood damage. jacksonville, florida is also reeling after ir ma triggered historic flooding monday. power outages, lots of trees down in our area. power and emergency crews are spread ing out across the region to help but some two thirds of florida's population still remain without power. i stayed in a hotel room for a couple of days. the money ran out and now i'm waiting to get back in. in the hard hit florida keys officials now say it appears a quarter of all homes had been destroyed by irma and 65 percent sustained major damage. the at this point a navy aircraft carrier is in position off key west helping as a large scale search and rescue operation is getting underway. there's currently no clean d

water, limited gasoline and hospitals across the keys remain closed. i'm praying that when people get to see the damage in the keys we don't lose anybody else down there. just getting in and out of the keys remains a l cha evening at this point while here at miami international airport authorities are expecting a surming of passengers to return who evacuated the area. report ing from the airport, joel waldman, fox news. >> president trump is making what appears to be a last ditch effort for tax reform of. he's a hosting a bipartisan group of senators for dinner. he will have to make nice with members of his own party who are still a little upset about the short term deal he made about the debt settling. >> ronica cleary is at the white house to talk a little bit more about this and tell us what's on the menu much there's some actual news being made over there. ronica, what's going on. >> i would love to e know what's the men menu. what wouldou

really be willing to compromise for just some free chicken. >> if it started on time at six: 32, dinner was supposed to start 569:30 as you said not with just republicans, six senators invited to the white house to sit down with the president, three republicans and three democrats. now the democrats were an interesting choice. these are three democrats who are up for election in states where president trump won. and so it makes sense for them when they're going back to their constituents to say that they've reached across the aisle with a person who won the state when the election occurred. now, we don't know a lot of details about what president trump is going to demand from tax reform, but sarah huckabee sanders today in the briefing really seemed to say that he is open to compromise and of course doing what they believe is best for the american people. listen to some of what he she said today. >> i think start talking about things that we all agree on. as

most everyone can agree that americans should keep more of their money than the government they spend it far better than the government can and i think that is something that is a common goal that a lot of people want to come together objection to the form i think by nature of them sitting down with the president that's a very good first start. >> well, as i said we don't know a loft the details of what the president is looking for. the one number that we've gotten from the white house is this idea that he wants 15 percent corporate tax rate. now the reports really suggest that that will never happen, but sarah huckabee sanders in the briefing as well what is clicheed look we want to move things in the right direction. the president is going to push for what he believes is the best deal threa can get and a lot of people are just simply pointing to the failure that was the repeal and replace effort for obama obamacare and the fact that there really wasn't an effort to reach across the aisle, at least there didn't appeato

ror of those ways especially because it seems like repeal and replace is off the table to maybe accomplish more when it comes to tax refrm and listen to people on both sides of the aisle. i'll be updating on all night on social media. that's a good point about healthcare re form because the argument we heard through most it was president trump said the democrats -- the republicans didn't work with democrats. president obama didn't reach out to republicans so why should they return the faifer. apparently that's not how it worked out this time. maybe you say lessons learned. the difficult thing is that tough talk works on the trail. that bashing works on the trail. people love that. but when you're inside the white hours, when you're inside the beltway it's very different conversaton >> yes, much different conversation. hopefully things will work out and you know you'll be updating us throughout the night. >> meantime the us national debt

the first time. president trump has signed the bipartisan temporarily raising the nation's debt for three months. around 15 billion-dollar in emergency funding for hurricane harvey efforts was attached to that borrowing measure. i was look ing at what it said was your family's hair of that. it goes up and up and up. >> wall street journal reporting president trump was advised his son-in-law and advisor jared kushner should step down. it all stems from meetings with russian officials. >> president of vote america now joins us to break all this down. >> thanks so much for joinings. >> thanks for having me. since this report has come out we've heard push back from trump's lawyers said that they never recommended this. they didn't recommend jared kushner should step down and at this point he is still in his position. what sort of trouble could we see down the road for the trump administration? do you think there's trouble for them. >> no, i don't think there's trouble, especially for

look, a lawyer's job is to certainly advise their clients and to be overly caution, to give them all different options in this particular case i'm certain if that was the only option that was given jared would certainly not be there. i mean, he has been very low under the radar doing his job effectively. he just got back present the middle east taking care of looking at palestine/ israel relationship, obviously to have better piece and better relationship with us as l well. so he certainly is doing his job. a lot of folks don't know. he's not taking a salary. he is doing the best that he possibly can. i think he is very genuine of how he is handling business and he's certainly not been implicated on anything at all. the president ran on this platform of being a businessman. he has to surrender himself with the best people. but you you have his son-in-law who has no foreign policy experience overseeing something that has never been done in

is trying to get israel and palestine and everybody on the same page right there. do you feel like the war -- i shouldn't say the war, but the words against jared kushner, is it driven by politics? do you think there's some policy out there from people who say i should be doing that job. >> you hit it on the nail. all the sources are unnamed. there's no credible evidence or credible facts. of course people want his job. he's a young man who is an established businessman and who has come into washington d.c. unlike -- unlike many of his other colleagues they have all come to washington, d.c. and have taken jobs or people want or position of a certain power. things like this obviously cause a little frustration with people and frankly in my opinion it certainly is politics and what i talked to other people about and colleagues, it has a lot to do with politics.s knee raised tonight position when president trump came and said he wanted to drain the

to the united states. let's talk about the weather. it was gorgeous today. it really was. i know we were expecting maybe some rain or more clouds but it turp out to be beautiful. >> you're exactly right. in fact, the dry air won the battle with irma. we have not seen much. that could change a little bit overnight. irma has lost a loft its intensity much it's just an area of lop. the national hurricane center isn't going to issue advisories. in terms the big rain shield it's not nearly as impressive as it was yesterday. later tonight as high pressure gets out of the way we could see a couple of light showers developing in the overnight hours. we have a few down to the south right now but as they've gotten closer to d.c. they've pretty much evaporated. as a result we actually did have a pretty nice afternoon and evening and going forward tonight it will be pretty nice as well. later the clouds are

>> within the last hour the supreme court decided to allow the trump administration to continue the ban on most refer gees. h of course comes from the travel ban. it also comes as california joined 15 states including the district of columbia in suing the trump administration over its plans to repeal the daca program. the lawsuit alleges the trump administration violated the constitution and other laws that aim to protect other immigrants from deportation if they work and study in the us. attorney generals from maryland and virginia are also part of that law it suit. meantime immigrant rights activists, house of delegates canned draits and dreamers in virginia say their political power is crucial to the democratic process and the november elections. tom fitzgerald more with this one reporter roar as if we needed another reminder how critical virginia politics are in this year. you've got a governor's race going on. you've got a us snrat race coming down the pike, but the key toll

getting into these general assemblies, races that by and large determine how virginia politics get made. so here was the scene in falls church today you had tom perez, and then you had coming in from california billionaire businessman tomorrw schneider. why is he here in well, he's here because he was donating a million dollars to the virginia democratic effort today through his next gen. his political action committee. why was he doing h? well, he says in his viewpoint that getting in to these smaller general assembly races in his viewpoint is the key to unlocking virginia and then down the line key to unlocking national races as well . in 2017 virginia is going to be the focal point of politics in the united states of america. it's not just because you have the mos

governor's race in the country this year. it's also because of charlottesville. it's because you have a campaign here where republicans are using thinly veiled racist attacks on latinos , on miss guzman suggesting that immigrants are equivalent to imnals. >> the stakes are high here in virginia. keep in mind money is pouring in to the commonwealth from both sides, republican and democratic. their goal is this, if they can break the republican strangle hold in richmond, they feel that could open up the door to redistricting. if they can do that they feel they can make other inroads. keep in mine this is an up hill battle right now jim and shawn and they're looking at it from the perspective you can have all

clinton on her book tour believe particularly in the democratic party that having leaders from the past continue to be oh so active and certainly obama can't serve again, by having them bee so active it can over shadow a new generation of leadership that's going to have to come and take over and be competitive in 2020 and beyond. but are there another group of people who are maybe happy that he's still pushing forward because he's a lot younger than some of his predecessors so it's not like he's faitding into the background right now that's absolutely right. president obama leaving office right now is only six months older than the median than the average age a president becomes president. he could be around another 40 years. so that's -- he's also a unifying figure in the democratic party. you you have hillar

sanders are still kind of debating what happened in 2016. you have a lot of people who take one side or the other. obama kind of unites people on both sides of that divide. so for him to be -- remain involved some democrats think that that's a good thing for the party. it is striking when you look back and you see i think 2004, president billion clinton he was really a hot com imhod ticketed event on the campaign trail. he was out there campaigning for john kir and then obviously many contact paining for his wife down the road. is this a sign of the democrats pinning their befn on the clinton and the obama. while obama personally had a great deal of political success it wasn't very good for democrats in down ballot race he . they lost 900 state legislative seats. they lost control of the senate.

point they had three fifths majorities in both houses of republicans. republicans have more governships than they've had in generations. some of the things that former president obama is working on is to try to influenza political process, get some democrats down ballot races and to try to reverse some of what they see is the unfair drawing of legislative district that happened after republicans won the 2010 e elections and so maybe a little of obama's current political activity is sort of a atoning for some things that didn't work out so well for the democrats while he was in office. trying to rebuild the bench there. >> rebuild the bench there, yes. >> thanks for coming in. >> thanks for having me. and we're back after this.
