storm. i'll have the update on maria and we can't ignore jose a category 1 hurricane, the latest. fox 5 local news at 10:00 starts now. a virginia family is speaking out tonight about the loss of their 15-year-old son. police shot and killed him during a standoff at the family's home last friday. >> prince william's county investigators say they were forced to fire when the teenager threatened officers with a crowbar. angelie hemphill is live in haymarket virginia with the latest. >> reporter: this family is still in shock, they tell me they cremated their 15-year-old son killed by police. their 18-year-old son, his older brother witnessed the shooting. is still too traumatized to come home here. while they didn't want to release the name of their son who was killed, they did give us these photographs of him that we can show you now, they tell me he was a

and he loved skate boarding. this young man was shot and killed by a prince william's county police officer friday who responded to his home. investigators say they got a 911 call from inside that home, that someone had a bomb strapped to their chest and was holding a family member hostage. police arrived and they say they encountered this 15-year-old boy in front of the home. they say the teen came at officers with a crowbar an they know manner and refused commands. one officer fired his gun shooting the teenager in his upper body who died in front of his home. tonight, the family did not want to talk about what led up to the shooting, they told me their teenage son was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. they would not talk too much about if he was possibly suffering from any mental issues. however, they say there was no reason to kill their son. and that

live in haymarket tonight. angelie hemphill fox 5 local news. tonight, hurricane maria strengthed to a category 5 storm. it's been less than two weeks since irma made landfall, now all eyes are on maria and the damage it can cause in puerto rico, dominican republic and haiti. sue palka is following the developments >> i do sad news an development and that is that maria, the category 5 has made landfall on the tiny caribbean island of dominiquea, i'll get in a little bit closer. the eye is not as intense or as wide as what irma is but it has winds of 160 and it is a direct hit as you can see crossing the island, this is the island

you need to do something. >> police are offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. fox 5 is in montgomery county with exclusive details on the new efforts to combat the surge of gang violence, the cou cou cou cou cou county's. >> reporter: we first told you about this last month. we got the specifics today. county executives wants about $600,000 and nearly $250,000 from the state's attorney's office, this comes after at least 18 gang related homicides in montgomery county in just the last two years. tonight we met up way county council president to ask him what is next? is it going to pass and this is what he had to

the executive. it will go on the agenda next week, we will hold a public hearing and act on it and it will pass unanimously. >> reporter: you heard it. this isn't just one time money, since it will be used to hire new officers, prosecutors and other legal staff to crack down on gangs of this is expected to be part of the budget going forward. the biggest problem in montgomery county as well as in northern virginia has been ms 13 an international gang from el salvador. we've seen a resurgence in the last few years along with high profile murder cases: there's the local gang hit squad based in montgomery county. a member was convicted of murdering a transgender woman. montgomery county state's attorney has been vocal in calling for more money to beef up the office.

executive. nearly a dozen artificial turf fields have either been closed are or on limited use after testing revealed the surfaces so hard they pose a safety risk to adults and children. evan lambert is live at mckinley high school. what does this mean? >> reporter: ok, tony basically what the city does to test these fields they take away, drop it on to the field, it has sensors and tells them how much of g force that the field absorbs. if the number is less than 200, it's considered safe. if it's more in an the risk for injury increases. where this controversy starts, is with the test results for the sports field at jan knee elementary in tenleytown. they said the city's department of general services tested the field and came back with a number over

the parents say the city and school system did nothing to keep kids off the field until they complained over the summer. the department of general services or dgs said they waited because they were trying to verify information. the principal did send a letter out to parents letting them know the field would be closed when school started. it remains closed but the dgs said the field is almost complete and should open soon, parents are upset about the lack of notification and timing on the repair >> the timing is what was the biggest frustration. because if it was known last spring, there was a lot of down time during the summer, and at this point, it's impacted the practices. so a lot of teams use the field for practice even outside of the school's use. so that's the biggest frustration i think from parents. >> reporter: turf field doesn't stop

ten more fields failed the most recent round of testing an order from dgs show the city is paying nearly a million to replace other field that is likely failed the test. coaches say repairs were made to mckinley field recently and the football team is back to using it. dr. diana zimmerman from a public health think tank say they should be awake-up call to anyone who plays on them >> we know very little about what's in artificial turf when studies have been done, they find a wide range of very toxic materials. including materials that can cause children to have attention deficit problems. can exacerbate asthma obesity and can in the long run cause cancer. they can be dangerous because they get hot

hatteras, some clouds brought the colorful were some of the outer bands of jose. tomorrow is our turn to sample a little bit of jose. i just wanted to show you we do have an outer ring band trying to push a little bit closer and mainly the beaches that are going to feel the effects. you could have an inch of rain. you'll have gusty winds, bill waves, rough surf and rip currents, i think what we will see is just a couple of showers, the best chance of seeing that east of 95, and also i wanted to mention we don't have watches up for our coastal line, if you go farther out to sea, you will run into rough surf but a tropical storm watch is up for long island, tropical storm warnings for cape cod, they may feel this like a nor'easter in the next couple of days, staying off the coast, strong enough to have an impact. meanwhile, some showers from jose will be limited. the best chance will be east of 95. we'll be

from hurricane jose still sending some of the outer bands in our area and it will do that tomorrow. we'll start with jose then we'll have the latest on maria. jose is about 250 miles east of cap hatteras. you can see the band off the coast. now beginning to pick up on gusts certainly not horrendous, but you'll get hours tomorrow. virginia beach to 22, ocean city at 25 but the surf will be high, there will be some beach erosion, rip currents and waves will be significant and we'll watch those gusts stronger as they go up the coast. the good news with jose and i have good news and bad. the bad it's a little bit stronger, it has wind of 85 now, and then, it's going to continue this new track just came in. it's a little bit messy, i was not able to grab it but it is going to stay off

we'll fix this so you can see it easier. becoming a tropical storm but making the loop and that means still going to be hanging out for the next several days, the latest on what is our category 5 hurricane maria. it did make landfall, this has to be catastrophic, thoughts and prayers for the island of dominiquea, hurricane maria is crossing it right now with winds of 160 miles per hour. this is new information. the pressure is a little bit lower. they're maintaining the wind at 11:00 at 160. and as a category 5, tomorrow night, it crosses the u.s. and british virginia islands and this is new, it was a 4 as it approached puerto rico, the national hurricane center believes it will be a category 5 and may make a direct hit on puerto rico, still recovering from irma, which did not make landfall on puerto rico. they may not be able to get out of

crosses the dominican republic. again we watch the cone because the islands are in the cone and the turks and caicos eventually passing them as a category 3 on saturday. notice florida not in the cone. so we're grateful to see that but again, we are going to have to continue to watch maria and jose's effects. it will be more humid. temperature about 82. we'll have isolated showers around here. best chance of seeing rainiest of 95 and an even better chance along it's cove you can pick up an inch of rain. with a lot of clouds, wednesday sunny and warm with a temperature of 87. we'll kick jose a little bit out to sea. futurecast shows the outer band and you can see it tries to spin in a few showers tomorrow at 8:00. we have clouds and some sun here locally. of we're
