9:00 o'clock, though, more trouble in the tropics. some islands just not catch break when it comes to hurricanes. next large one looming large right now hurricane maria hammered the small carribbean island of dominica last night and this morning causing major damage and flooding. fluctuate add little bit in strength but back holding steady. cat five now barreling toward puerto rico the virgin islands. places that are still reeling from their hit by irma. two weeks ago. officials say the island could take a direct hit. got glanced by maim. for more on the path storm's path and power let's check any tucker. >> worst case scenario for puerto rico over the next 24 hours. now we're looking at us virgin islands and puerto rico up next here with a category five hurricane on the doorstep, and because of the path it's taking right across the island i would expect there's going to be widespread devastation in puerto rico in the next 24 to 36 hours. there's your lates

category five hurricane. it did fluctuate little bit overnight as it passed over dominica with mountain areas there. it tour at the center of circulation a little bit now back over very warm waters and unfortunately here looking very very healthy. all right. maximum winds 160 miles an hour moving off to the west northwest at nine that pressure low. 933 millibars. what can we expect? here's maria's wind track. the darker red the core of the strongest winds will be and in some cases the winds will be gusting to about 170 plus miles per hour later tonight early tomorrow. you can see the core of shows strongest winds expected to go right over puerto rico including san juan there in the next 24 hours. locally we're dealing with jose. quickly 72 degrees here in and we will have fringe impacts with jose which we will talk about coming up in a couple of minutes along with tropical air around here but maria the big story of the day again maximum winds 160 miles an hour. that's

rain. >> so scary. state of emergency is already in effect as maria takes aim at puerto rico now. evacuations have also already begun in the virgin islands. at the same time jose continues to make waves off the east coast. mike thomas here with those details. mike, unbelievable. >> unbelievable. it has been guys no other way to put it super busy hurricane season. busiest probably since 2005 h here. it's not over just yet either. we have two storms out there and now some of these places that are just kind of starting to clean up from irma are going to have to start that process all over again. hurricane maria which reached powerful category five hurricane status on monday now threatening places like puerto rico as well a number of island in the eastern carribbean. many of which were just devastated by hurricane irma. >> the bahamas is in in the process of process of

from three devastates storms now preparing for another. we are in the projected path of hurricane maria. ahead of storm puerto rico governor declared a state of emergency as maria could hit puerto rico directly on wednesday. hurricane warnings have been issued for the u.s. and british virgin island. closer to home hurricane jose is now moving north off the u.s. eastern coastline. it is not expected to make landfall but jose has been prompting tropical storm watches and warnings from long island up into new england. >> did you plan on jose? we did not. we planned to be here since january. so we -- we were taking a ga gamble. >> in some areas, jose has already been causing dangerous surf. flooding and rip currents. keeping some lifeguards on duty even after labor day. >> the rip tides have been really really vicious. >> i would stay out of the water today. >> now in rhode island five people already

after being knocked off a coastal jetty by high surf from jose and the new york city area could see cove al flooding as well as strong wind and rain from jose starting later on tonight possibly lasting all the way into wednesday. so guys busy hurricane season and it rolls on. by the way we're only a little halfway through it. >> oh, goodness. >> mike thomas, thanks. >> thanks much. meanwhile fairfax county virginia task force one is busy in puerto rico preparing for maria's arrival. this is picture of the team boarding up a building. task force engineers also tweeted this picture inspecting critical infrastructure around the island. the team's k9 searched through rubble pile at a national guard facility. >> talked with one much their chiefs last hour. they say you just prepare for the worst. they say they have a safe place to ride it out but you never know what you're getting yourself into. >> that's what they're there. typically they go down after the stom. they're in the thick of it. wishing them the best as their

let's just leave it at that with all the hurricanes we've had. the other big story the president speech to the un general assembly coming up soon. >> the president is expected to focus on the boiling tensions between the us and north korea and also the iran nuclear deal while he struck a cord with many conservatives during the campaign where he railed against the un, you'll recall that, he may choose his words carefully today trying to nudge member nations into action. >> the president's motorcade will once again whisk him through new york today to the united nations. he has already spent time there making nice to world leaders. even praising the fundamental ideals behind the un. >> the united nations was fo founded on truly noble goals. >> but at the same time the president will push the un on north korea trying to rat kell up pressure on dictator kim jong-un and iran and whether that country is living up to the terms of its nuclear agreement. and then there is the un general itself. what some see as an organization that has grown

really tough for the teen's family to hear. >> it's horrible. we just grieving him and we just came from cremation just a few minutes ago. and for just someone come out and said, oh, it's justified. goodbye. no, no, you can't say goodbye. a family has been destroyed. we'll never have a life. >> reporter: prince william county police respond to do 911 call friday morning someone inside the house on hartzell hill lane said the teen had a bomb strapped to his chest and was holding a family member hostage. police reported that they encountered the young man in front of the home. they said he had a crowbar in hand. started coming toward police aggressively and ignored multiple commands to stop. he was shot in the upper body and died in front of his home. no explosives were found. now the teen's family says he was on the honor role. he enjoyed tae kwon do and skateboarding they told us as far as they

♪ trouble with a turf. nearly a dozen artificial turf fields in the district have been either closed or are on limited use. now this comes after testing reveal the fields are so hard they pose a safety risk. now many parents are wondering why schools didn't fix this problem sooner.

an elementary school with that dangerous turf. i swear, bob, one more thing for parents to worry about. >> reporter: exactly. not just skinned knee, maybe a banked noggin. we're on r streetnew dupont circle much this is ross elementary school. you see kids are outside playing here this morning. the issue is the green turf field. it look like carpeting you've seen these. these artificial fields here. this one and at least three others at three other d.c. elementary schools have been deemed too hard. the surfaces don't meet the standards. i want to show i was sign they posted here. this field is still open for the students but they have a notice here. it says it recently failed an impact or hardness test to that men's there's increased risk of injury in the event of a fall on this field. basically saying contact sports are prohibited. but the kids are still allowed to play out here. weren't want to show you video tape from jannie element will he school that's up near tenley town. that surf field is closed as is the field at

school. tubman is the fourth elementary school that apparently the city will pay up to a million dollars to replace the turf field there is. we've spoken to a parents group that says there are 11 fields throughout the city that have been deemed too hard or unsafe. parents at jannie tell thus the principal sent them a letter in august telling them that their field would be closed while it's being replaced. most parents tell us they're upset because they feel the school system and district's department of general services responsible for maintaining the fields deliberately with hell the test results from parents when they first became available this past spring. >> the timing is really what was the biggest frustration, because, um f it was known last spring, um, there was a lot of down time during the summer, and at this point it's impacted the practices, a lot of teams use the fields for practice even outside of the school use, so, um, that's the biggest frustration i think from par parents. >> we really know very little about what's in artificial tur

they find a wide range of very toxic materials including materials that can cause children to have attention deficit problems, can exacerbate asthma or obesity, and can even in the long run cause cancer. these fields can also be dangerous because they get very very hot in the summertime and you know in washington it can get very sunny and very hot. >> reporter: now she's with the national center for health research talking about those turf fields like you see at mckinley tech. the field at mckinley tech was closed a time now reopened because of those little bits of rubber that are in the astro turf that lady you just heard from and others feel may be harmful as well. at the elementary schools, it's just the shock proof factor, guys, that these fields need to be softened up, and the folks here we just spoke to the head of the pta here. she was telling us that they've en

him to come back, right. >> that's the feeling i get. >> that's the feeling i get. okay. >> yeah. >> all right. let's head on down to tucker barnes very busy weather day. tropics keeping an eye all those hurricanes churning and our weather looking pretty good for us. >> yeah, i mean not bad when you consider we got jose just to our east and of course maria not too far away down to our south and east. very busy in the tropics and we're dealing with the fringe effects of that this morning. 72 here in the city to start your day. someone in quantico. north and west we haven't had whole lot in the way of cool weather lately. this morning off to the north and west overnight lows back in the 60s. still 69 dulles. 68 hagerstown. so with jose just off to our east, we're dealing with a tropical air mass in place and we'll -- you'll feel that this afternoon with cloud cover and the humidity and the daytime highs about 80. all right. locally, we'll go partly sunny today. we've had sunshine early get a little more sun later today, but as the influence of this system gets a little closer we'll have some cloud cover and potential for a few showers across the

region. you can see the showers that have broken out across the lower eastern shore and parts of the delaware at this hour. this is sort of the outer bands of hurricane jose. still minimal hurricane, maximum winds 75 miles an hour. this is not the beast that ma row ya is it's still a hurricane and has large area of precipitation there. the worst of this storm will be to our north up into southern new england parts of long island they've got tropical storm watches and warnings at this hour and they'll have to deal with beach erosion and in fact potentially beach erosion along the lower eastern shore as well as this system will be slow mover. all right. future cast this just want to show i was few of the showers may track into our region mid to late afternoon there we are at 5:00 o'clock showing outer band of light rain showers across the region. we'll keep a shower in the forecast today. we shall be much quieter by tomorrow morning and as we get into thursday and friday. we'll end summer on a very warm note around here with high temperatures expected to be well into the 80s right through the weekend. all right. let's get down to ma row yacht big story of the day.

ca as i've been mentioning all morning firing on all cylinders unfortunately this is another very very strong hurricane. this was a couple of hours ago. they flew hurricane hunter in and they found a peak wind of 167 miles per hour there in the eye wall and unfortunately there's nothing stopping this hurricane from maintaining that very strong intensity as it approaches puerto rico. interestingly puerto rico has not been hit by a lot of strong hurricanes in recent years. last one to clip the island was hugo if you might remember that back in 1989. before that you got to get back in 19 30's. san juan has really and puerto rico not had to deal with the direct impacts of a major hurricane in quite sometime and i'm afraid this one could do a lot of damage to puerto rico over the next 24 hours. there you go. forecast to track right across puerto ricco and towards the bahamas by the end of the forecast peer. right now, long term guidance wants to take out to sea. we'll keep our finger crossed that happens. we'll have to watch

the loft to talk about the book and growing up as the sportscaster's daughter. >> cindy, thanks for um coming in this morning it's great to see you. >> thanks for having me. >> we can say tumultuous. you lived the life. how do you begin to describe the relationship you had with your father? >> it was bad. it was good. half my life he was a wonderful father and we were super close and half my life he just chose not to be art par of it. >> which part do you remember now? >> um, the good times. got times because i think that was the core of him. i mean imagine in 1970 what man, what father would ever get custody and not just custody, sole custody of three little children. so the way he was is that so as a father then is how i choose to remember him. it's also how i choose to parent my own children. >> so those lessons that were instilled in you as young girl, that's what you take away host from the relationship? >> yes. >> that you had with your dad. >> yeah. he's an over achieving perct

i do try to tone down the perfect any of the side a little bit. he's a super hard worker, and he taught me and my children to dream big, i mean he was the sun of a butcher in st. louis. i don't think he ever imagined he would achieve the fame or the success that he did. >> but the over achieving desire, the hard working, that also essentially led to the down fall in the relationship thud with your father. he was working so much and doing so much. >> yes, it did. i also think sadly we repeat the lessons from our family that we don't understand. so his -- i mean it's a very rich family story. his father had four wives. um, and he had an older sister that was disowned when he was a child. now, pop or my father's father made peace with the sister that was disowned before he died. so i kind of assumed we would repeat the same family pattern but i don't think my father ever could confront that pain from his childhood. th

bury the past and when you're working 80 hours a week, there's no time for reflection. you have to be always on your game, in the public eye. who needs a teenage daughter that's questioning things? >> in the public eye that might be the case. but as a father, in his mind that probably wasn't the case. did you feel like -- i'm sorry this is not storybook ending to this story when it came to the relationship between you and your father. did you -- i know you reach out to him. did you feel like at some point you would be able to break through and be able to reconcile like you would hope that you would? >> yes. i believed that. and there were signs towards the end so he did mention me in an interview two years before he died with my my name spelled correctly cindy with an i. i know he was thinking about me. i think probably after all those years maybe he doubted that i would forgive him or that i even still loved him, which i clearly did. so i think he ran out of t
