continues to be a mystery. fox5 is keeping you updated on the latest in the investigation and why neighbors say they are concerned. plus, trouble with the toif. nearly a dozen artificial toif fields in the district pose a safety risk to kids. now parents are wondering how this could happen. the news at ten starts right now. tonight nearly 10040 people are dead and the death toll is expected to. as a powerful earthquake hit mexico. right now rescue and recovery missions are underway to find victims lost in the rubble. the 7.1 magnitude quake hit near mexico city this afternoon. the quake caused dozens of buildings to tom near the epicenter, about 7o city, according to the mayor an unknown number of people are still trapped in the rubble. 150 to 160 people have been foun

taken to the hospital with injuries. the quake hit on the the anniversary of a 198 earthquake that also did major damage. and earlier this month an 8.1 magnitude quake hit mexico and killed at least 98 people. tonight we are also following two hurricanes, jose is now a category one and spinning off the east coast tonight. and hurricane maria is still a on monster storm with winds up to 175 miles per hour. it made landfall off the land of dough meek a. it caused widespread devastation. right now the hur cane is barreling towards puerto rico. >> we're going to focus on maria because it is so frightening tonight. it is category five with winds that are strengthen ing even at this hour, 175-mile per hour sustained winds. not too t far blow irma and what's incredible about this as it is now onl

away from the tiny island of st. croix, about 135 miles away from san juan. the central pressure with this hurricane is down to 909 million bars and why that is important is because it's a sign ever its intensity which makes it a top ten. the and the pressure may still be dropping as this eye barrels towards st. croix. we can also pick it up on radar out of san juan and the eye incredibly small a sign ever it's ' intensity and all of the rain bands continuing to completely cover the islands including just about all of puerto rico let's look at the track because we believe that it will be obviously imminently affecting st. croix and maybe even st. john and st. thomas. st. croix didn't get hit as hard with irma. there's the central pressure that i said is so terrifying and then potentially a hit on puerto rico

passing along any information we get, including an update to the track. >> a deadly house fire in bethesda remains a mystery tonight and neighbors say they want answers. it's been more than a week and investigate rs have yet to determine the cause of the fire or officially identify the man found dead in the base many. fox5's lindsay watts is staying on top of the story. she joins us live from the fire scene on danbury road with the latest details. lindsay. >>reporter: tone initial it's not often that you see police keeping round the clock watch like this nine days after a house fire. tonight you you can see the locked fence that is protecting this house. neighbors say that during the day a team of investigators is in and out, including atf agents . just adding to the mystery. sources tell fox5 that a bunker with tunnels was discovered underneath the home. police say they're not calling this a criminal investigation at this point, but the reason they're keeping watch is to preserve

it turns into one. obviously the question, what happened? all the scuttlebutt sounds kind of suspicion. it's the talk ever this bethesda neighborhood a house fire nine days ago. we've been covering it since it happened. one man is dead, another is recovering in the hospital. >> the 26 year old man living here he escaped, a second man trapped in the basement did not make it out. his connection to the resident is unknown. investigators are keeping the media back right now as they are still searching. investigators say they found hoarding conditions inside the home and according to sources a bunker down blow with a bed and comput er. we've kept working to get more information. investigators are still not sure what caused the fire or how the victim died. they've had a cop sitting here watching this house for the last four days around the clock. today, police told us the autopsy on the victim still has not been completed. investigators say they have an idea who he is,

sure. as far as the cause of the fire, montgomery county fire says it's waiting for the af to analyze electrical equipment from inside the home. you would think at least things would have come out. people who live in the neighborhood say they keep waiting to see will come of this , especially after they learned so par. things have come out of the conditions of the house and the bunker underneath has been very surprising. it just goes to show you you're never quite sure who is living around you. police say the 26 year old man who was living here has been cooperative. neighbors say they believe he lived alone and that he inherited this house from his parents. neighbors that we've been talking to have been paying very close attention to the goes on since the fire. one woman says the port-a-potties over here show up today so it looks like this investigation could be far from over. lindsay watts, fox5 local news. >> days after a prince william policeff

15 year old boy prosecutors ruled officer robert troy's use of deadly force was justified. the teen had just assaulted a woman with a crowbar and officer s say he was aggressively moving towards them. oscar your buena has accused officer troy of murdering his son. while he he is heartbroken he says he has for given the officer. i woke up and i wrote a letter of forgiveness for that person that i don't even know that took my kid. i forgive him. your bean oh says he wants to know why police did not try to take down their son with a taser or use non other lethal force i be sted of killing him. prosecutors admit the shooting was not caught on camera. none of the officers was wearing body camera s, but the evidence the commonwealth attorney has reviewed him has convinced him that officer troy was in danger when he fired his weapon. >> so if your kids play sports on artificial toifer fields

failed safety testing for being too hard and that could lead to serious injuries p if those fields are not replaced. tonight parents demanded answers from officials. evan lambert is live. did anything come out of this meeting tonight? >>reporter: they're hoping that they get their message across, but what these parents are concerned about are these little pellets that come off the toif field. they say they get every where and they don't know exactly what's in them. they say the studies that they've seen have been done the by the manufacturers. the parents also demanding that they be a part of the decision-making process on how to replace these aging fields. at times this meeting at oyster adams bilingual school got heated. you're saying everything is commonsense that we should be doing? concerned parents and an epidemiologist asked tough questions working with a an engineer working with the

to replace fields that have been deemed unsafe. why not use a cautionary principal and say in the absence of non-industry fund ed peer reviewed signs-based studies epidemiological studies showing that these materials do not cause an increased risk of cancer, premature onset of publicity, asthma or respiratory issues and infection, in the absence of that, stop, don't do it, wait. let those studies happen. >> the parents group was organized by the oyster adams community council, essentially a pta. they want to say the synthetic materials the district is using to replace ailg fields like the adams field, an engineering firm specializing in design and testing of synthetic fields tried to alleviate parents rs concerns. we have been testing synthetic toif in the same way that we've been testing natural grass. all this comes as dgs provided a new list to fox5

we were watching today with jose . most of the cloud cover off the coast. only a few oirt bands were able to reach off the bay. down to the south we go for our intense and potentially catastrophic hurricane maria. we've been checking on st. croix and now they're getting winds gusting over 85 miles an hour. it will make a direct hit on st. croix or very, very close in the next hour or two and then it is on as as a category five for puerto rico very concerned about the catastrophic damage that is about to them there. they were missed a direct hit by irma and they still had one bill in damage. west, northwest, winds at 175. here we go, nothing changed. still coming assure as a category five. tomorrow morning we think about 8:00 or so in the morning. here's another bad sign with
