area. about 2500 there are right now. that number likely to double in the coming days. meanwhile a group of dc police officers also heading down to san juan this morning to help with the recovery efforts and for some of these officers the connection to the country began way back today. fox5's mel know alnwick live at joint base andrews with more. mel? >> reporter: good morning, guys. this is total d.c. effort. we are here right now with a 113th wing of the air national guard. you can see them loading supplies on to the cargo of this c40 that's going to be taking the members of the d.c. police department down. they've got american flags and puerto rican flags as well as lots of mys that are going down with them. they got the call last night from d.c. from national guard bureau saying, hey, can you help we want to zen these dc police officers down and that's what they dodge they're logo is the minute men and they answer the call in a minute. take look at all of the

these d.c. police officers get to san juan, puerto rico. now as far as the d.c. police officers go this fox5 crews were there as the small relief group met at the d.c. police academy. they packed um and said prayers. they want to travel as unified force. eight of the former -- eight of the mpd officers are former puerto rico state police who join the dc police department years ago you're also looking at that other picture the other life picture they're going to travel in style here. this is an executive jet that the dc air national guard has and they want to make sure things are very very comfortable for these officers who are giving so much of their time out in their homeland and we talked to those officers this morning. they told us that this mission is very personal. >> it's a lot of pride. a little emotion here and there it gives us a sense of pride, a sense of honor, um, and a privilege to serve to go back and serve the people that they on

>> reporter: now this is going to be a lehigh day deployment. what these officers will be doing is basically assisting the police in puerto rico in any way that they are needed and as wisdom mentioned, yes, there is no power on the island except for just a very few places. many homes lives even roads are destroyed. i asked one of the pilots here, what he expects as far as conditions in san juan. he said that air strip is okay but everything else around it is did he say is he mated. military police and military members of the military at that airport even sleeping inside the jet ways because they really have nowhere else safe to bunk up at this point. so it's going to be rough when they get there but it's three days and it is really just what these folks all feel like they needed to to help those americans in puerto rico. live here at andrews air force base, mel know alnwick fox5 local news. >> god speed to those d.c. police officers head to go puerto rico.

we got cooler weather on the way but one more hot afternoon 89 degrees. should generally be dry. through up a scattered shower best chance for that will be little closer to maria. in extreme lower maryland lower eastern shore you'll have cl cloudiness further south and east you go. as you get down towards the ocean for your daytime hours. rest of us generally sunny skies and hot. all right, guys. seven day has a lot of sunshine on it and cooler temperatures. >> we look forward to that tuck. let's check our morning briefing. first up presidential rebuke in alabama as republicans in alabama picked former state justice roy moore to run for senate in december despite white house support for his opponent luther strange. moore will now take on democrat doug jones in the race for jeff sessions former seat. he of course was backed by steve bannon. on the national stage republicans are moving health care to the back burner now after losing support for the latest repeal and replace plan. so they're turning the attention to tax reform. holly has those details for us this morning. >> w

washington will try to make that tax reform pivot today. despite some recent defeats for the gop establishment and the latest push could include yet another effort to repeal and replace obamacare. meanwhile president trump is head to go indiana today to pitch tax reform after some of the details are released later this morning. but getting all of this through congress going to be major challenge. they have been crunching the numbers on capitol hill. over the numbers many of us crunch each year at tax time. a possible overhaul of irs tax brackets and formulas that we haven't seen in this country in some 30 years. >> we will cut taxes treme tremendously for the middle class. >> it's been a big priority for president trump and other republicans in washington. but this hasn't exactly been a banner week for the republican establishment around here. and there was a big reminder of that last night. >> thank you very much for your support. >> reporter: in republican run off election for senate seat in alabama,

roy moore easily dispatched luther strange who had the backing of president trump and other gop leaders. and that came on day when republicans through in the towel in their most recent effort to repeal and replace obamacare with democrats claiming victory. >> today americans breathe a sigh of relief because the health care of millions has been protected and preserved. >> we do think it's time to turn to our twin priority reforming the tack code. >> reporter: even while turning to taxes, republicans are still keeping an eye on health care reform. and the possibility of taking another shot at it. combining it with tax reform in one mass satisfy package. >> the timeline here is pretty aggressive. republicans would like to get this all done by the end of the year. so we shall see. >> we'll get the details later this morning. >> thanks holly. this morning a local family really

here as the search continues for missing prince george's county woman who was last seen in virginia. take a good look at your screen this is 19-year-old a shanty billy she has not been seen or heard from will the in the last nine days and now the fbi has joined forces with norfolk police to help find her. investigators say she never showed up to work at the norfolk military base back on sept september 18th which is also the last day she was seen. newly released surveillance video shows her car it's a cream colored mini cooper leaving the little creek base just 30 minutes after it drove on to the base. that same day her cell phone was recovered nearly 5 miles away from the base inside a dumpster. her family is now norfolk virginia hoping out hope for answers. >> please pray for ashante buildingly my daughter, my baby much she's my everything. >> her car was seen leaving the base, um, and then at that point, um, is when we're looking for help from the public. >> there's $10,000 reward for any information that will help lead

found in four different buildings here on campus. we can show was one of them looks like much it's basically a copy of the ones that they found here. these were pinned to billboards bulletin boards and they each had cotton attached to them as well. now on the back of it it said d.c. counter resistance. again, four different locations on bulletin boards attached there students photographed these things. the campus police are investigating as well as the office of campus life. now, in a statement the university says this. we will not be deterred by this cowardly act. you mentioned the coincidence. these were put up on the same night as presentation on the university's new anti racist research and policy center. now, its director a professor sent out a letter to students here at american university staying in part, this is the latest attempt to frighten our

do not let these terrorists he called them slow you down, fear you down. here now reaction from students here on campus. >> you think enough is being done. the police are investigating. what else can be done in your mind? >> yeah, i mean, there needs to be cameras all over campus without a doubt. i don't know if it's a privacy thing. i doubt it's a budget thing. but there needs to be something done so to prevent this from happening in the future. >> last night i was at the friend' house and i came back, and there was a couple of the black students they was like walking around campus trying to find a posters and stuff. >> reporter: what do you make of that in 2017? >> i mean, i thought, like, the past 60 years we would get through something like that we're still in that phase. >> it's kind of shocking i feel it brides -- au prides itself on being very inclusive. when something like that happens it's startling for the whole student population. >> reporter: now this isn't the first time something like this has happened.

emmanuel richardson from arizona and oklahoma state university's lamont evans. authorities claim that they have unveiled a scheme of pay outs and kickbacks to recruit top high school basketball players to attend elite ncaa schools. history in the making in saudi arabia. that country says it will now allow women to drive for the first time. saudi arabia was the only country in the world that prohibit women from driving. women however will not be allowed to get licenses immediately. a committee will be formed to look into how to implement the new order next summer. the ecuador ran consulate caught fire last night in the district just before midnight on veepth and euclid streets in northwest. officials say the fire started in the attic and the roof before spreading earlier this morning flames could still be seen from the roof of the four-story building. two firefighters were taken to the hospital for non-life

well, there's some bad news when it comes to breakfast. consumers are starting to see a spike in orange juice prices. that's because hurricane irma destroyed as much as 70% of florida's crop. experts say prices could keep going up to as much as two dollars and 30 cents additionally in costs per gallon. they're hoping that brazilian exports can help to offset u.s. short falls falls to keep price fluctuations lower. and finally, plenty of lights, camera and action in adams morgan yesterday. comedians jerry seinfeld and dc native and super star comedian dave chappelle were in town. they were taping an episode of sign fell's series called comedians in cars getting co coffee. they stopped by the diner in adams morgan before getting into a gold coupe but the car didn't zip off like they planned. looks like a classic. it actually got stuck. cree numbers had to push it along 18th street. still a nice

sooner. but with a cold front coming through tomorrow, that will push it out to sea. so we'll finally get rid of maria and we're also going to change up the air mass in big way around here. later today with maria still in the neighborhood they'll be a little cloud cover that will kind of push west off the ocean and there might be a sprinkle or a quick shower southern maryland lower eastern shore but i think for the rest of us maria is pulling in drier air from the north we should keep it dry and unseasonably hot around here with maria hanging out for one more day and again it will be just one more day with those temperatures near 90. all right. here's the big changes. yes, this front will come hard charging that was here tomorrow. the winds will pick up tomorrow afternoon. and it will not be unpleasantly cool. refreshingly cool. that's the theme around here for friday and the weekend. refreshingly cool. as daytime -- men toes, yes. temperatures in the 70s and overnight lows in the 50s. it will actually feel like fall around here and it's about time as we've been very very warm the last couple of weeks. all right. the other thing to talk about rain we need it. septem

case are familiar with a loft ground work. i was listening to it from the perspective of someone who's not familiar with the case. >> right. >> then it just takes on this whole other meaning of just how could this happen and the intrigue and the twists and everything he is. but what's fascinating here sarah is unlike so many other podcasts we've seen when it comes to true crime, there's no ending in this yet. >> right. so a lot of true crime podcasts look at cold cases they look at case that is have gone to trial and maybe there's question about the person that's been convicted. we wanted to something in real time. because one of the big aspects of this you probably recall when it first happened. police came out immediately and said there's more than one person. definitely has to be somebody else. and here we are over two years later and no one has been named a suspect or arrested. a lot of people have a lot of question about that. and so we just wanted to -- i think the public needs to know some of those answers. so we decided let's jump in in real time and kind of follow this story. >> right. >> it's interesting i know you're

this pill. and for whatever reason i was already kind of, you know, in the food world. i was like you know what, i don't really want to take a pill for the rest of my life. i'm feeling okay for now. and it wasn't really explained to me what the symptoms might be so in the year that followed really when i was trying to hustle as a young professional in the culinary world, and i started to kind of i say slowly dee september down health mountain. >> right. >> and experience crushing fatigue, terrible skin, hair loss, weight fluct fluctuations. >> this is while you're okay i'll be gluten free and do the kill smoothie all the things that people are told to do. >> i wasn't doing that at the beginning during the early part of my symptoms and then i kind of, you know, got my act together and said okay if i'm not going to try the medication i should try all these other holistic things and gluten was the first thing i took out but on its own it kind of took me into higher plateau but it wasn't enough to, you know, make me feel truly well. and also i started to feel

i started taking these dishes and remaking them because once i got into competitive body building i realized the nutrition was at least 99% of it. >> absolutely. what you put in your mouth is a biggest part of how you end up looking. let's cook the dish. what are we making today? >> today i'm making pan roasted salmon. >> yum. >> with quinoa. with, um, asparagus. >> is this something you made on the show or just something you wanted to show us? >> you can make it i'm sure. >> yeah. i don't know if i made salmon this season. i can't really remember it was so many dishes i made. i don't know if i ever made salmon. it's high in oh may good good for muscle building. help you burn fat. >> what kind of oil are you using. >> extra virgin olive oil start with the skin side down and cook this skin side down. >> let me ask you a question about getting a crispy skin is the trick the pan you're using, the oil you're using, what's the trick. all of the above. pat the salmon dry the skin will get crisp you want it on medium you don't want it too high ca
