they found her car abandoned and her cell phone turned up in a dumpster. matt ackland is live with more. matt. >> reporter: hey, jim, as you know everybody in this area is wondering about ashanti hoping she'll turn up. we'll take you to a search taking place right now. latoya carr helped organize this search and she joins us live on skype. la to it ya', can you hear me. >> reporter: yes, i can. we'll talk to you for a second because we have pictures to show. what's taking place right now. >> so, currently we are gathered at azalea garden and tally hoe road over here where the cell phone was found. we have a couple of people out doing searches in different parts of the neighborhood and we're just pretty much standing in front of where the phone was found, the dumpster. >> reporter: i see the pictures. looks like you're looking

under bushes and many different places. about how many people are there? okay. sound like we've having trouble. they're searching in this location. if you remember, this is where ashanti's phone was found inside a trash dumpster. remember, her car was also found in a norfolk, neighborhood, one that she wasn't familiar with. she went missing after they noticed her go into a military base and then leave and then several days later, her car was found. today we are hearing that her parents met with the fbi, a long meeting. we've been trying get in touch with the parents to find out if there are any other clues. a $20,000 reward. the number (757)455-0100. that's directly to the fbi. we'll try to get more from you on that search from

area. coming up for you tonight at 6:00. that's the very latest. back to you guys in the studio. >> all right, thanks matt. the war on gangs is really gaining momentum in maryland. >> anne arrundel's top cops are teaming up to form a task force targeting gang members. fox5's al tisha lewis has that story. >> reporter: we're told this task force starts now and the goal is to flood streets and neighborhoods across anne arrundel county. in fact, police say every city in this county has a gang problem and they florida ton starting gang members individually going to their homes, going where they live, targeting and disrupting where they do business and more. >> ms-13 is a violent gang so certainly that will be a part of our efforts moving forward. it's a violent gang. we're going after violent gangs. >> rep

anne arrundel county police chief timothy altamere. he says targeting gang violeviolence. they describe this new task force's mission as an all-out assault on gang members. we do know the task force will include city and county law enforcement and the fbi. beyond that there were few details released today about the task force's makeup. even so, their mission is clear to target all gang violence including ms-13. anne arrundel county executive steve shaw says the county will work with immigration and customs enforcement when encountering gang members who are here illegally. >> anne arrundel county does believe in cooperating with homeland security is assuring that criminals who are also illegal aliens are repatriated to their countries ofri

illegal immigrants in this county or in this state. >> reporter: now, there have been several incidents here in anne arrundel county that could be linked to the violent gang ms-13. police are still investigating. they also say people who are victims of gang violence should not comply with the gang members' demands or orders. in fact, they're asking that they call police and they say that also includes people who may be here victims, who may be here illegally, they say they should call police as well. tisha lewis, fox5 local news. >> meanwhile we have new information about a big immigration crackdown hang in our area. ice rounded up nearly 500 people from across the united states for federal immigration violations. ice conducted the operation over a four day period that ended yesterday. the people arrested are from 42 different countries and 14 of those arrests happened here in the district. the suspects include a person

convicted on weapons charges a second person from el salvador with misdemeanor and a person from mexico convicted of cocaine possession. >> a former prince georges county school aide accused of sexually abusing young students has been sentenced to 100 years in prison after pleading guilty on 23 counts of child sexual abuse. last month, deonte carraway was sentenced after admitting to reporting those students ages in nine to 12 performing sex acts on him and each other. prosecutors say the case has devastated the victims' families. >> hearing the story of the mother who has to wake up now every night because her son has nightmares to track his nightmares to share it with his therapist. we will never forget as well the minor child who had to be interviewed in this case under a conference room table. he sat on the floor of a conference room table because he could

of the house and he had a lot at to say today upon his return but before any of that he took a moment to thank the two capitol police officers crystal griner and david bailey, the two police officers who saved his life. >> and let me tell you if they didn't act so quickly and even after being shot, both themselves, continued to engage the shooter and ultimately got him down which not only saved my life but saved the life of a lot of people in the chamber today. crystal couldn't be with us today. david is. david you are my hero. you saved my life. thank you so much. [applause] >> reporter: just really a remarkable scene up here today. now, scalise, he will walked very slowly onto the house floor. he was on crutches. he was wearing sneakers. but he got there. and that is a huge achievement when you consider it was only back on june 14th that a

gunman opened up on an alexandria virginia baseball field where the house republican caucus was practicing for the congressional baseball game in addition to the majority whip, four others were wounded in that attack. those police officers who scalise just talked about, they returned fire and ultimately took that gunman down, a gunman who was later identified to have a vendetta against republicans here in the nation's capitol. now, you talk to some of the congress people who were on the floor today, people from our area, they'll tell you this was a scene they will never forget. >> oh, very emotional. we've been waiting for three and a half months for steve to come back. as a physician i understand how serious those injuries were, how hard that rehabilitation is going to be. >> we all stood in line just to give him a hug afterwards and folks on the other side, democrats were coming in for their hugs, too. >> just an enormous sense of

>> ♪ >> badly needed relief supplies are piling up in that containers stuck in port in puerto rico. power is still out across the islands, roads are block. only 20 percent of the truckers needed to move the containers have come back to work. the road for puerto rico ahead is going to be difficult because it has to recover from the defects of hurricane ma maria. >> the white house spokesperson says they're actively engaged and in -- in ts process. ronica cleary is live at the white house. >> reporter: today the white house confirmed that there are 10,000 federal government workers on the island including over 7,000 troops working to help the people of puerto rico and again, the white house stressed the idea that getting aid to the island is more difficult. they talked about the fact that when we got

florida, they can utilize trucks from all across the mainland of the united states to get resources there. that's an option that they just don't have with the island. and during today's press briefing, sara huckabee sanders she offered these words to the people of puerto rico. take a listen. >> our message to the incredible people of puerto rico is this. the president is behind you. we all are. the entire country. your unbreakable spirit is an inspiration to us all. we are praying for you. we are working for you and we will not let you down. >> reporter: now, sanders also went on to tweet about what's called the jones act noting the president has lifted the restrictions on the island. so, what is the jones act? let's take a look. it limits shipping by foreign vessels to the island. now, it was put in place nearly a hundred years ago to support u.s. ship builders but in this time of crisis, it has been a burden. it has cse

slowing down the process of getting aid to the ravaged island. now, the department of homeland security, they waived the jones act for just 10 days. now, the waiver can be extended at the end of that window but people believe and reports suggest that waiving the jones act during just a 10-day period is going to help get equipment to repair infrastructure and emergency services to the island. now, in the meantime, the white house has reported that 44 of the island's 69 hospitals are back and fully functioning, certainly good news moving in the right direction. and the army corps of engineers is on the ground there working to restore power. as you know, so many majority of the country has no power still. now, the president still plans to take that trip on tuesday, so, of course at fox5 we will that continue to keep you updated. reporting live at the white house, ronica cleary, fox5 local news. >> ♪ >> all right. let's get a check o

the white house and you can see the flag blowing away in the breeze there. >> i'm going to say, you know, as far as days go, this was pretty perfect. it was a nice day to take a nice long walk. got a little warm in the afternoon, though, caitlin. >> it's going to cool down, isn't it. >> definitely tonight once the sun sets temperatures are going drop back. it was pretty blustery today. can't remember the last time we had a windy afternoon but since the beginning of the day we've had that winds gusting over 20 miles an hour. outside right now temperatures are, yes, still warm. 80 degrees in washington but guys, this is like a cool 80 is what i'm saying, right? a cool 80. we lost the humidity that we've had earlier this week. they were laughing at me for thinking this is cool. i know it's not really, 80 degrees but with theout the humidity of the past few days where temperatures were at or slightly below 90 degrees it feels a lot differently out there. 78 in baltimore, 75 westminster, 75 in gaithersburg, 78 out at dulles, 75 in winchester. these temperatures are still a bit above normal. here's those winds out of the north sustained at about 15 to

we have had higher gusts just about all day. they're starting to subside a bit. once we get past sunset which is now before 7:00 p.m., days getting shorter quickly we'll see gusts subside. but right now you have a 23 miles an hour wind gust at reagan national. a cold front brought drier air, windy weather for dan temperatures will drop quickly as that cooler air settles in tonight. here's what's left of tropical storm maria. moving very quickly eastward. it was stuck for so long right off the shore of the carolinas and southern virginia the. once that front came through it zoomed out of here and it will that continue to go on its way taking some of those northern rain bands with it and becoming a distant memory pretty quickly hopefully for us. not the same sen theriot down in puerto rico. maria is it on her way out. nationals forecast temperatures are going to be dropping very quickly after sunset. even though we're saying 70 degrees at about first pitch it will be in the low 60's by the end of the game and with a breeze it might not be a bad idea to bring a sweater or a light jacket

competition for a lack of a better word. where we actually are having people from the community come out and sort of get a sense of what it's like to be fit to be a maryland state trooper. >> so, on saturday, the first part of the challenge is about a three-quarter mile run. from the three-quarter mile run they'll exit down here into the grassy field where they'll perform a ze a series of exercises starting with burps, 30 squats, 20 sit-ups, 10 jumping squats so that's a squat with a jump at the end. from the field they'll proceed up the track into the back of our gym into the gym where they'll perform another set of exercises. 50 rushing jumping jacks or alternating jumping lunges and they'll conclude their run which is about .8 miles they'll finish up a nice steep hill and that will complete their challenge. obviously a plethora of different exercises which will challenge you. >> i'm sorry,. >> the bear took us by surprise.

>> ♪ >> this is fox5 local news at 5:00. >> it's coming up on 5:30. a car crashed right into a glen burnie dominos pizza restaurant. this is skyfox over the scene earlier. it happened just before noon on richie highway. the driver of the car survived but still no word on what led to the crash. >> police are looking to arrest that woman caught on tape throwing a cup of urine at a metrobus driver. happened last month as she rode the x2 line in northeast. opal brown was set to appear in court this morning for a status hearing. she didn't show. if she's caught the judge has ordered her to be held without bond. >> a leading economist addressed wmata's board of directors about metro funding.

transit assessment districts instead of slapping taxes on everyone. he says that would be a more fairway of collecting fees and shift the burden away from lower income residents. >> ♪ we have new information tonight in that deadly fire in bethesda that claimed the life of a 21-year-old man. >> fox5 has learned askia khafra had been hired to work in the basement of that home. that man escaped. fox5's paul wagner is live in bethesda with more on that story. >> reporter: guys, this story has taken a strange new twist. all day today, we have been talking with people that know askia very, very well and this is the story they're telling us. they said that askia and daniel beckwitt got to know each other when beckwitt made an investment in a company that askia wanted to get off the ground. then the two struck some kind of deal and askia agreed to come here to this house on danbury road and

excavate the tunnels and the bunker that's inside that house. now, we're also learning today from these friends that askia told them that he was blindfolded before he was brought to this house every day so he wouldn't know where he was coming. in fact, he thought he was going to a house in virginia. now, we have obtained some photos today showing askia inside the bunker of this house. let's show you this video that we have now. this is a photo of askia khafra posted on a facebook memorial page in the days after his death. and this is a photo of the 21-year-old friends say was posted this summer as his facebook profile picture. he's wearing a helmet, a breathing apparatus and protection for his ears. friends say the photo appears to have been taken inside the bunker of the house on danbury road. a place he had been working since at least this summer although a friend said it could have been as late as january. his parents knew that askia had been working. he sent them a text

the day before the fire. the man who friends say hired him, daniel beckwitt escaped the fire and according to witnesses was shirtless and covered in dirt. fire officials say beckwitt has been cooperating with the investigation but they have so far been unable to determine a cause. investigators have narrowed down where they think the fire started and are having some chemicals tested to determine what they are. there have so far been no ruling from the medical examiner on a cause and a manner of death. now, the police department is no longer watching this house around the clock. again, they are still waiting for this cause and manner of death. the investigation really can't go much further until the medical examiner says whether or not this was somehow an accident or possibly a homicide and the fire 53y investigators are still trying to determine how the fire started. that's the latest we have been able to develop and we'll continue to follow this story. live in bethesda,au

fox5 local news. >> ♪ >> social media giant twitter on capitol hill today as part of the senate and house investigations into russian meddling in the 2016 elections. the closed door meetings follow similar meetings from facebook earlier this month. they're investigating the spread of fake news on social media, russia's involvement and whether anyone in the u.s. helped to target those stories. >> the supreme court is taking a fresh look at the controversial issue of whether unions can force workers to pay deuce. the justices deadlocked in a similar case last year but they agreed to consider a free speech challenge from workers who are against paying money to unions they don't support. the case has the potential to bring a major financial blow to democratic leading unions that represent government workers. the supreme court will hear the argument in a couple months. independent vendors in d.c. have discovered a loophole around a recent law passed here in the city. >> it allows people to grow and possess a small amount of marijuana but still makes it illegal touy

and her kid plays for another high school here in the county. >> coach ed boyco had only known winning. he was part of state champion staffs at damascus and good council. he was thrust into the job at kennedy when his long time friend and colleague dan macozia passed away after a long battle with colon cancer november of last year. he was only going to pay until the end of the season but he stayed because of kennedy's original 18. >> we didn't have a lot of kids come out for the team. we -- we were 18 kids on the team but you can't practice very well with, you know, 18 guys. >> yes, 18 kids total. want to turn around a program that hasn't won a game in years and has 18 players on the team, you got to go recruit. >> i looked at the athletes, i looked at the guys that played basketball, i looked at the guys that played the other

clear blue sky behind it, so, just real refreshing change in the air masses. it has been kind of blustery today but nice drier air coming on through and we had several days of well above temperatures, i think maybe 10 in a row and basically since mid september we've just been well above normal with three days at 90 degrees or above. most of those days above normal. so, we still are today but we're going to see temperatures return to normal beginning tomorrow. now, it's mild right now. once we hit sunset it is going to get cool rather quickly out there. weather headlines we'll see temperatures fall back into the 40's and the 50's for tonight. so, it is going to be much, much cooler. you'll notice it as you step outside. so, weather headlines, let's begin, much cooler tonight with those temperatures in the 40's and the 50's. and sunny and blue route full beautiful forfriday. another school down expected this weekend and we should be staying dry. no rain chances as we head into the necktie days. t

two days. outside it's been a beautiful afternoon. 80 degrees in washington, 79 in manassas. and 81 in quantico. and then our high temperature -- temperatures as you look towards the west, we've got 80 in washington, 72 in columbus, 67 in detroit. those temperatures are much closer to what we'll see tomorrow. high temperatures only in the low to mid 70's. satellite and radar all clear here. again, there's maria. tropical storm maria well out to sea now getting a nice push from that cold front that came through. that plus hurricane lee still out there, category one storm at 90 miles an hour, continues to track through the atlantic to the north and east being pushed along very swiftly by the jet stream which has been accelerated thanks to that front that came through. you see their path is still far out to sea. from there we won't have any active storms once lee dissipates and maria as well, at least for now but we could easily get something to start to get together down in the atlantic t all right, looking at friday, sunshine

two cold fronts. we'll get that reinforcing shot of cool dry air for tomorrow so it will start off only in the 50. we'll warm up into the mid 70's pretty typical for late september. 61 degrees by 8:00 a.m. so that's much, much cooler. you'll need a jacket and the kids will too as you send them out to the bus stop this morning. a big difference than the past few mornings. 72 trees by noon, 75 by the end of the day. so, clear skies and cooler with winds diminishing after sunset. they will be a lot lighter tomorrow, 58 degrees to start you off, 75. it's just a beautiful friday, nice start to the weekend. seven-day forecast, cool breeze there on saturday. there's our reinforcing shot of colder air. a high of 70 and then 72 on sunday. temperatures warm up as we head into next week. look at that 80 showing back up in the seven-day forecast. another thing to note, it is dry through the whole seven day. we don't have any rain chances in sight. we could use the rain but for now i mean, really enjoy some fantastic weather. this is kind of the best that it gets over the next seven days, jim and sarah. >> all right, thanks,
