>> you've been seeing life press conference from las vegas getting update on that mass shooting investigation under way. welcome back to those of you coming back to fox5 news morning. we're now in the nip clock hour. the good day hour. we will continue our coverage of the breaking news situation las vegas mass shooting that left 50 plus people dead now up to 400 people said to be injured in this horrific shooting. >> let's get you up to speed on what we know right now. first all this whole thing start the 10:00 o'clock last night first calls came from for what was believed to be an active shooter around country music festival. they later realized those shots were being fired from the 3 32nd the floor of the mandalay bay hotel which is across the street and down from the festival grounds. we have learned that gunman 64-year-old stephen pad dom had a nevada address, mesquite nevada he apparently had been in that hotel for several days checked in on september 28th. police at this point have no idea what may have led him

this. >> they did find more than ten rivals in that room you can hear the sound those gunshots being fired from the top floor of that gold striped hotel. that's the mandalay bay. and again being fired across the street the high-powered weapons into a crowd of what they said 22,000 people attending a country music festival. >> that distance the mandalay bay to that concert venue some three football fields what some people are desc describing the distance. others saying this likes like something this man clearly planned out. ten miles found some and room. they are searching his home right now for more weapons an motive. larry lou danley they thought they had -- that apprehended her they're telling us this woman is actually out of the country. so the woman that they may have -- they took into custody not

paddock. we also know that they are still evacuating people from that shooting scene. deaths 50 plus is what they are saying. so still evacuating people. still processing the dead on the scene and the las vegas coroner's office they're the one set up that one hotline number for people to call and see. this is the terrifying video here and the sound. [ gunfire ] >> rapid fire gunshots. coming from so far away that's what's really unbelievable about this. we've seen so many graphic images of people ducking for cover shielding each other with their own bodies to hopefully escape some of this gunfire but it kept coming over and over again about three times as is what people are saying. it really is just one of those perfect storm. you hate to use that term but so you had the outdoor concert venue so many thousands every people packed in there. this gunman able to just shoot at will until he was

it was jason aldeen on the stage closing out the route 91 harvest festival they do this festival every year. this the same venue they have the i heart music festival lot of people have heard about that one las vegas as well. we also see more ground level footage here people said they saw the muzzle flashes coming from the upper floors of the mandalay bay hotel. even some people who were closer saying they could see smoke coming from out that window. he must had to have shot out that window in order to do this because those -- i've stayed in mandalay bay a number of times. those windows no not open. the las vegas village is a 15-acre fair ground. concert goers were jumping gates and fences to trite to get to safety of this is swat teams on that floor. intond floor this looks like after they were able to get into that hotel room. they had use an explosive blast to get in. we also learned he killed himself prior to police getting inside that room. had been there for several

and we also heard from fox news sources it was smoke the smoke alarm went off in this room because there was so much gunfire in there and that is what helped hotel personnel direct police to exactly what room they needed to go and investigate. ten firearms found inside that room. police say it will be a long and tedious investigation. >> fascinating information, too. at the end -- >> one that we've never experienced in many valley. so what we're going to try to do is the best we can to get our first responders back on their feet and responding and conducting their proper investigation and assure that we have the safety of this community at heart. >> we did a quick background check on stephen paddock we're still trying to figure out what his connections are. we know that he has family in florida. so we're trying to work on that angle as well. we did not find any criminal records in our quick check, and that was pretty much confirmed by las vegas police

not too long ago saying that they have nothing, new york city information they said is derogatory. nothing negative came up about him a routine citation that came up several years ago. he's a manager of the apartment complex in mesquite and he did share an address with that person of interest that woman marilou danley. we also found that years ago he was an internal auditor fort company lockheed martin at this point that's pretty much about it. still history as to why he would do this. steve. >> i think it's fascinating information, mel, when you talk about how they were able to narrow down the search of gunman in the hotel room. when i woke up in the middle of the night my heart sank immediately when i saw the news first of all online i literally was in bed checking twitter and my first question was obviously how does this like this happen? who does this? knowing that area how in the world were they able to neutralize the situation so quickly and be able to find that person because that panic

hearing gunshots and having them rain down on such a large area you makes you wonder how they could have narrowed that town as to where those shots were coming from. >> that speaks to the power of social medial we know there were several police officers at the concert itself, and some of those perhaps could have helped in sort sort of being able to pinpoint exactly where that sound was coming from. no doubt people in the motel had to have heard that as well i think it was social media, people being in contact very quickly perhaps people called down to the front desk no out officers were in there relatively quickly. unfortunately not quickly enough as we said that from that venue shooting from that far away it's so different from scenes we've had before where the shooters are close enough that perhaps they could neutralized. people could see where the shots were coming from. if you imagine how far away that is, that really is just a horrific situation and

i don't know, if we'll ever know as to why he did this. >> all right. police tell me, the police are saying he took his own life before their officers made entry into that hotel room. which makes you wonder as well, mel, if he knew they were at the door or as they were coming into the door that part of the timeline i don't think is quiet clear yet. >> steve, there had been reports from the local newspaper that he even had cameras set up so he knew when people were closing in. >> also leading to what we've been saying. another experts talking about this. that this looked to be very thought out planned attack. it wasn't something that was randomly know. he had been in many room since september 28th. the lower sheriff saying he doesn't know how he allowed a housekeeper to come into the room. probably not. if he had up to ten rival in there and cameras set up. just a really heinous act carried out by the 64-year-old man. as you can imagine reaction pouring from all over from the president tweeting this morning. >> let's take look what the

♪ 9:14. want to get back out to las vegas about 15 minutes past 6:00 a.m. out in las vegas our lauren blanchard has been working out there all night bringing ugh the latest details from the las vegas strip just starting to see a few peeks of daylight this morning, lauren, daylight starts to set in over the las vegas strip what's the scene now? >> reporter: well, steve, maureen, we have some really horrific numbers to share with you guys. 406 people sent to the hospital. 50 people are dead according to the las vegas police. they are now asking everyone able to donate blood just becaused neat is so great at this hour. here's what we know about the alleged gunman his name is stephen paddock. 64 years old of the nearby las vegas area. they found him dead in his hotel room by the time police were able to break in there. this is up outflewnd

the mapped lay bay hotel and casino were he allegedly popped fire on this crowd of 22,000 concert goers. up up in that hotel room they found ten weapons in that room. along with paddock and at this point, authorities are not naming a motivation just yet. they said paddock was known to local authorities but it wasn't for anything really too ter terrible. they said a citation that was handled through the co courts so really isn't the usual suspect at this point they are trying to figure out what exactly motivated this guy to go out and shoot so many people again 406 people injured and at area hospitals at this time. >> steve, maureen. >> give me a sense of what the mood is there now. it's been a couple of hours since this happened. i know the strip looks empty behind you give me a sense of the mood now. >> reporter: well guys it is definitely quited down where i am but we still have been seeing

them we have seen blood on their shirts. very stone faced. there were some wrapped in blankets just very slowly walking up this road to where we don't know a lot of folks have just been told you have to leave the strip. you have to get out. mandalay bay is closed. you have to go find another hotel and this leaves a lot of folks wandering around wondering where to do next, and the other thing that's really just interesting to watch a lot of these folks are dressed up for country concert they're in their boots, they're in flannel, got their, you know, some of them in the beginning of the night were carrying around their cups of beer still. so as the night has gone on it's just been truly drastic to see how everybody's demeanor has changed as the numbers have started to come n as people are realizing exactly what has happened. very somber mood

to watch police racing up and down this street even as we say sunrise is just beginning to come up here ins have vegas. >> there's still police activity outside the mandalay bay. is the strip completely shut down where you are, just police vehicles going back and forth or have they opened up some of the area up to traffic -- we see people obviously walking right past you hand in hand. so what's the situation now as far as restrictions? >> well, there are -- they are allowing some foot traffic now. beforehand they were not. no body was basically able to walk by where we are. we are seeing quite a bit more cars going in and out. we've seen a number of buses empty buses going in and then we have seen the full buses coming back out presumably bringing people out of that area, of course, the entire trip is not shut down but that particular part where this whole thing unfolded. that is an active crime scene, and the other thing that's really interesting about this, some of these bodies of people, people were trying to get

group of concert goers on the vegas strip at a country concert, and killing 50 plus people. injuring 400 plus others among the dead are police officers, some attending the concert. other there is to simply aid in that shooting when it broke out. >> some questions we'll never get the answer to. some we can find out more information what we find on social media and witness accounts, first hand accounts. bob barnard tracking that part of the story for us this mor morning. >> if you analyz the video and listen to the eyewi eyewitnesseu get the sense that first barrage of gunfire unless you were right there in the line of fire, you didn't realize what was going on. that often happens in these cases you hear multiple rounds people aren't really aware jason aldeen wasn't aware and then as the second rival was pulled or reloaded, you clearly see the people are jumping on top of each other to try to protect each other and ultimately when the shooting stops, concert goers are using the metal barricades to help bring some of the wounded and dead out

[ gunfire ] >> i've heard guns before go off this sounded like some some rt weapon that was non stopped. it started for 30 seconds. it was like reload and back on it again unloaded for another 30 seconds. >> the open fire was in the middle of the crowd during the headliner, like people probably instantly were killed. way more than -- had to be like 20 people instantly killed. >> people are just running across the road, man, just -- it was insane

>> i saw one person fall right behind me. after that just panic, and climbing over fences to literally survive. people pushing each other. a man stepped over here to get -- to get over me. >> how hard is it? >> shots kept ringing out here and there. it's a mess. a lot of people injured a lot of people have been shovel two or three i know of some that have been shot. two or three i know got injured trying to run out of there. it's horrible much this is disgusting. makes me sick. >> reporter: that man there was one of the roadies. he was actually working at the concert. you just see these images here. this is one of the most popular places in our country look at the carnage there. people littering the street. people helping others as soon as the shooting stopped, guys, and again, you get the sense that people at least initially didn't know what the heck was going on.

getting delayed and all of us were sitting there questioning what's going on. i'm at this point i wasn't the reporter out there. i was a civilian just wondering in my head lights wake taking so long and all of a sudden we get an announcement at the airport they're telling us there has been lock down and reports of a active shooter at mandalay bay. at spirit i could see across through my window i saw mandalay bay. i just learned looked outside. there were swarms of hem copters surrounding. you can see emergency vehicles. emergency crews just speeding by with their sirens. it was really to be honest it was very terrifying. i mean, everyone was just like i said not panicking but just wondering, okay, so what do we do now? and just obviously being in this business, and from my knowledge here, i wept to twitter riata way. went

and just, you know, following updates. i called my family everyone was starting to call their families as well we kind of gather together laying with our hats, our pillows, blankets, everything and just keeping each other updated on what we were hearing. and trying to essentially dissect what was true and what it wasn't much as you guys know, like, when we're hearing stuff that's happening, a lot of it is preliminary info. a lot of is essentially scanner traffic. so we're hearing stuff that's going on possible al shooter at the airport. possibly someone with an armed rifle at the with latch ya. all across the strip and so it was -- it was terrifying. i'll be completely honest with you it was pretty terrifying. >> i know in your early report you talked about having friends who were at that concert who were driving across fences trying get to safety. talk little bit about that and have you been in contact with those people? are they okay? >> reporter: yeah, i'll be honest i'm get emotional maybe i'm just tired it's kind of just hitting me right now. one of

concert. like i mentioned in the video, and she posted online because she was getting so many calls and texts. myself being one of them making sure she was okay and online on facebook she, you know, put that at one point, like, she thought that the gunfire, you know, the sounds of gunfire was part of the concert itself. and then she was saying when she realized that people were getting hurt and there was just bloodshed around her, that she, you know, she turned to whoever she saw first at that time it was couple. they just bolted. they cared and jumped over a fence and ended up hiding for theirs lives. hiding under a car, and until, you know, the scene was clear enough for them to escape a hotel. she escaped and was hiding at the mgm grand hotel isn't too

in our country it happened just over year ago june of 2016. when 29-year-old omar mateen opened fire at the club filling 49 people and wounding more than 50. mateen was killed during fire fight with police. ten and a half years ago, the nation mourned for virginia tech. when 23-year-old student chow entered a building on the blacksburg campus opened fire and killed 32 people and injured 23. he then also killed himself. in december of 2012, another dam lanza walked into sandy hook elementary in new up to connecticut killed 26 people mostly children before he killed himself also killed his mother n199135-year-old george hin nard opened fire with a handgun in calene texas he loaded and emptied his gun self times leaving 23 people dead. then he killed himself. and while those are the top five, debtor lee yesterday mass shootings we all know there are a lot more. all we have

he was the headliner. the final act of a lehigh day concert. when that round of fire stopped, more than 40 people were dead. 400 more were hurt. the gunfire began shortly after 10:00 o'clock vegas time. suspect has been identified as stephen paddock. a woman police identified as a person of interest and his companion has been located. president trump has been briefed and is scheduled to address the nation in just about 30 minutes. >> wee need to see what he'll say toed dress this tragedy in las vegas. we're hearing terrifying survival stories. there were 22,000 concert goers in the area. we're also hearing from two fox5 workers who were las vegas themselves. one of them still there. one just got back into the airport in the last hour. we have live team coverage. let's start with bob barnard who is gathering eyewitness accounts and melanie alnwick who has the

flashes coming from the you are per floors of the mandalay bay hotel. this new video is somewhat graphic. absolutely terrifying. you can see people huddled on the ground together. some of them are bleeding. some screaming. as it gets very quiet. and then the shooting starts again. the venue is called las vegas phil scratch 15-acre for ground the boulevard from the mandalay bay hotel. they were jumping gates and we're seeing chilling images confirmation stephen paddock shot out the windows of his hotel room. take look alt these this morning we could see only those once the sun came you have reflecting off those golden windows. to different windows of his 32nd floor sweet blown out swam teams located the shooter in room on the 32nd floor. they use explosive blasts to get to him police say there were ten rivals inside the room.

detectors went off and that is how hotel security and police knew what room to go to. we're told that paddock killed himself before police were able to get into that room and police and family once again have no idea what would moti motivate-year-old stephen paddock to kill so many people. the sheriff says this will be a long investigation much at this hour they are still evacuating people and processing the dead. the fbi has been brought in to assist as far as paddock's history our background check found no criminal history. that was backed up by investigators say who say they found nothing derogatory in his background. we did find that he is listed as a manager of the an apartment complex in mesquite, nevada and once work as an auditor for lockheed martin he did share andy dress with that woman we talk about earlier this morning marilou danley considered a person of interest she was located out of the country. paddock was using her identification and she's not involved in this crime. but still

>> whenning that like this happens of this magnitude, there's always the question of how do we talk about it with our kids especially? do we talk about it? how does it change our lives moving forward in terms of feeling safe, going to the next concert that we might want to tend? michael magill is out of kansas city, missouri youth and family expert, and joins us via skype this morning. michael, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us. we really appreciate it. >> absolutely good morning to you d.c. thank you for having me. >> where do you begin when you want to talk about this with your kids? >> you know i spent so many years as school counseling dealing with mediations and conflict and violence when i talk to young people do you trauma that's really what we're talking about it's not just violence, this is traumatic. because when you are expe expec- when you go to places and you realize we're not safe. i tell parents to explain it's okay not to be

it's okay to tell the truth and say, i am afraid, i am worried, i am scared. the issue that so many people have they try to avoid these difficult conversations and when these thing happens people don't know what to do. it's okay not to be okay number one to express here's what's happening here. i'm afraid. my main job is to keep you safe, but i just don't know how to do that in a messy world that we live in. it's okay to acknowledge that number one. >> obviously everybody michael on different level when it comes to understanding of this and everybody is kids are on a different level. underring this. can you do any type of break down perhaps age group as to how you might address it for say the very young versus the young child versus the add list sent child and how you might go about handling the situation. big thing are circles of grace. for example, if you are an elementary school student it's obviously not soak to show them a video of a school shooting or something

okay to have small conversations and you show them, upping, hey, right now mommy is sad. let me explain to you what's happening in the world. someone got hurt and someone died. because the issue was that young people really haven't really grasped the full concept of death. and so often it's okay to talk to them and say, hey, someone got hurt. someone died. you know they're not with us any more. let's take time to write their familiar al letter and explain how we mourn for them. that's one thing for young people. for older teenagers the biggest things about teens they think they are invisible. they think these things don't happen. so what i recommend is families with teenagers actually do sit at the news and do watch conferences don watch videos on these things that are happening and explain, this is what can happen just from being a grown up and so here things i want you to do to hopefully keep yourself safe. the reality we cannot always keep our kids safe from these

is messy, the world is trouble m the world is chaotic but here are things do you care to hopefully avoid some situations. does that make sense. >> it does make sense. i have question for you from two different sides. it's okay to not be okay. it's okay for me to say to my child, okay, mommy is afraid. i can't keep you safe everywhere. >> yes. >> it's okay for my child to say, mommy, this makes me af afraid. but from both sides, michael, how do we not let that fear get the best ofs? how do i not just wrap my arms around my child and keep him in a bubble and say you can never go anywhere. how does he not be so afraid he doesn't want to go anywhere? >> absolutely. so it's all about balance. so -- in fact, what we call good secure attachment starts by you actually wrapping your arms around your son and even crying with him and loving on him and saying again, these are the realities that are happening in life, and, yes, my job is to keep you safe but

be able to, however, here's what we do know based on traumas that people who are able to kind of overcome and be able to we wall more resilient tend to have some sort of a social and spiritual system. not so much do you go to church. people have some level of a connection to either medication, yoga, a higher power, a religious institution, something like that. people who are connected to a spiritual, connected to something they need to be higher than them will become more resilient. it is okay to again like like you said you hold your baby and you talk to him and you tell him i love you and let's dissect what we're seeing here. because they'll a lot of questions were you the reality we won't always have a lot of answers but to be honest, to be truthful to, explain, i don't have the answers. i don't know how to keep you safe. what i can do is know for example when these thi

fifty seven walls to things that help them and showed them that people rise strong from tragedy. knock not keep yourself lock in house or cage the more you keep yourself locked in and protect yourself from tragedy you also protect your yours zest from goodness and from love and connect. you cannot have both world. >> we'll are to let you go. i want to ask on the flip side of things. >> sure. >> i know you spend a lot of kids working with kids and youth people. when we see more and more of these start to become more and more main stream, do you worry now that the youth of america is becoming just a little more used to this at this .. and not as shock as not outraged perhaps our generation was? >> i do. i do. i think because it's just so ubiquitous. because of technology. i got the alert on my phone at 2:00 o'clock this morning. i look at it i was shocked and had to get back to work and saw more updates. the issue we're seeing these things more and more and more

desensitized that's why it's so important for families to regularly engage and let our kids know these behaviors are not okay. these type of behaviors and to have conversations with kids on the impact of stress. i don't know the victim. i really don't know. we don't know what triggered him to do what he did. but we do know, though, people sometimes pop off because of mental illness. because of stress. because of all those different types of quadrants that go on in the brain and the hippo campus. we know that to be true. however, what we can start to do is have real honest conversations with people who are not okay. and give them room to express that they are not okay. those are some important tips and tools i give people all the of time. be truthful. express you're into the okay and give kids room to agree and vent and talk about those issues there is no hefty solution we cannot stop this. we just cannot stop them. we also can't keep our kids in from experiencing life. if we do we're cutti

sometimes there's a lot to get through as far as briefing the president on exactly what he needs to say or what actions need to happen. we're expecting this to happen momentarily. now i will say this. not trying to politicize this but every time we have this -- something like this that happens with mass shooting the question comes -- gun question comes up. reason we're saying this, there are two at least two gun votes schedule in the house this week much this was supposed to be after representative steve scalise came back last week had a happy homecoming back to congress after he had been knot shot in alexandria earlier this summer with with him back the house was scheduled to vote on several gun issues this week. we don't know if that vote will be delayed, taken down, rescheduled but the reason we mention this is because the political experts we have talked to said a lot of it might depend quiting frank wal the president says he when speaks in a few minutes and which take he may have on this topic that may dictate where congress goes with these at least these votes

they're zooming in little bit buck see one of the windows blown out right there and kind of easy a curtain. i realize it's pretty tee small. if you look on the right edge of that building two-thirds of the way up on that small bock on the right side of the screen you'll see one window that does not patch the rest. that's where believe those deadly shots were fired from the windows. you can't open the windows inside the mandalay bay hotel. they are floor to ceiling windows but he would need some type of blast or gunfire to get the whole in the window to gip witch it looks like the entire weren't dough has been blown out because the curtin is swaying in and out throughout the hotel a lot of questions as to did he check in under his own name? did he specifically request to be on that side of the the building? >> he request to be that high up? a lot of unanswered questions still out there and of course it's very active investigation thats on-going. melanie alnwick has been

just outside of las vegas but we don't know much more about their relationship. the video you're looking at a number of videos continue to come in to us from the instagram and from other social media sites facebook as well here you can see police down the las vegas strip what horrifying site this must be for people who were even just not going to the concert itself but on that strip wouldn'ting what was going on everything from the tropicana down to mandalay bay was on lock down. and then the video from inside the hotel. i found that also to be very striking. now, these are swat teams after the threat had been neutralized as they like to say. they went in there and i know you guys mentioned this i think that's really telling as well people obviously saw it. they said they saw what look like muzzle fire from outside and then inside the police went into these rooms. i know they were telling folk they needed everybody to stay back. that they were going to have

blow the door down and see whether the suspect was alive or not, and indeed they found that he had killed himself before they got in. still so many questions, though, as far as why he would do this. our colleagues in orlando did interview stephen paddock's brother he said that they're just absolutely devastated you can see it op his face. just in shock. telling us their brother has no history of hem illness he we were to college and started a business and retired to las vegas because he liked gambling. we also can tell you based on a quick background check of him we found no criminal history and then investigators did back that up as well saying they found nothing as they said derogatory only just a minor infraction several years ago our back ground check showed him listed as an apartment manager in mesquite, nevada where he
