final five is focused solely on the deadly shooting ins las vegas, what we're learning, and the renewed debate over gun control, we'll start with the latest from las vegas police, 59 people dead. more than 500 others injured. 500 others injured. those injuries range from gunshots to shrapnel wounds to people who fell and got hurt trying to run for their lives. the shooter was on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay resort firing into the crowd from

even first responders didn't know where the shots were coming from at first. >> i can't speak to how long it took them to get into that venue, we had issue right out of the shoot, right out of the start because things were going on we didn't know where the gunfire was, we weren't sure it was safe to commit our people. we try to make our people as safe as possible. we do it in a format called a rescue task force >> it will take a long time to release the identifies of all the victims, we're learning a maryland woman is among the hundreds of people who were injured. her name stein in a frost and she's a 2008 graduate. a bullet was lodged in her right eye so doctors had to remove the eye. she's stable but can't breathe on her own and expected to be in intends care at least a week. we've learned the names of some from family's friends be here's one story, a it doesn't man named sony melton is among the dead, him and his wife were celebrating the first

anniversary. he died protecting her. and a school teacher from southerly california is among the 59 people. sandy case taught special education in manhattan beach >> there's a difference in the lives of our students and families, many worked with her over multiple year, her loss will be deeply felt throughout the entire manhattan beach community. >> also learning more about the gunman, been identified as 64-year-old stephan paddock, he lived in nevada. he had no criminal background. and police have not spoken about a possible motive yet. but investigators found 23 guns in his hotel room. several were modified to make them fully automatic. 19 more guns as well as explosives were found at his home and his brother, eric, lives in florida, reporter showed up at the home and look at the guy. of this is stunning to see the

unity from the president outside of the white house, the president led a moment of silence and bells rang out to honor the victims. (bells) president trump the first lady, mike pence and his wife karen participated in a moment of silence today honoring the victims killed in what's now the worst mass shooting in modern u.s. history. and flags are flying at half staff as a tribute to the victims of the las vegas shooting, not just in dc but getting reports of that all over the country. the president called it an act of pure evil. he addressed the country from the white house. >> in moments of tragedy and horror, america comes together as one. and it always has. we call upon the bonds that unite us, our faith, our family, and hour shared values.

maybe longer than that. >> president will visit the u.s. territory of puerto rico tomorrow as scheduled he and the first lady will meet with storm victims, first responders and members of the military before traveling on wednesday where he'll talk with local leaders and law enforcement. during the speech, the president made sure to recognize the bravery of the first responders, they were the ones on the front line running towards the gunfire to save lives and he's not the only one honoring them today. >> this happened, we got first responders that are literally covered in blood. as a result of this there's a lot of victims have not been identified as of this point. but they have stepped up, i just can't say enough about the fine men and women that are our first responders here in clark county and all of cities and jurisdictions who pulled together. >> that was just the first responders who stepped up to save lives. we heard a lot of people at the concert or in that area who tried to shield loved ones or jumped in their cars and transported victims to the hospitals as

each other says far more about he don't we are as americans than the cowardly acts of a killer ever could. the gospel of john reminds us there are no greater love than to lay down one's life for a friend. memory of those two displayed the ultimate expression of love in the midst of unimaginable act of hate will never fade. their examples will serve as an he on a earnnal reminder that the spirit will not be broken. we've seen people stepping up to dominate blood. blood donations in las vegas are needed now. people waited up to five hours to help hundreds of people injured in the shootings. and the people that aren't just taking action by donating blood but also providing water, food and blankets to those in need. now, in times of tragedy, people step up. a lot of hotels in vegas are offering free rooms who are coming to be with their loved ones, southwest airlines are helping withra

for these people who certainly had to up root everything and head out to vegas to take care of friends and family and loved ones. major questions the country is asking and we ask these questions every time. why did this happen? and what could have been done to prevent it? advocates for gun control are pointing to the attack and calling again for tougher gun laws, that includes somebody who know as little bit about mass shootings. former congress woman gabrielle gifford and her husband she was nearly killed in in 2011. >> what we're hearing at the capitol and the white house are thoughts and prayers. thoughts and prayers are important. we send our thoughts and prayers too. but they're not enough. your thoughts and prayers aren't going to stop the next shooting. only action and leadership will do

>> one of the musicians is calling for gun control. he said the shooting changed his mind about gun laws. he's a guitarist for the band, he wrote he's been a second amendment supporter his entire life. he said i cannot express how wrong i was, we actually had members of our crew with concealed handgun licenses and legal firearms on the bussings they were useless. white house was asked about gun control today and told this is not the time to talk politics and policy with the grief still so raw. >> this is an unspeakable tragedy. today is a day for consoling the survivors and mourning those we lost. our thoughts and prayers are certainly with all of those individuals. this is -- there's a time and place for a political debate. but now is the time to unite as a country. there's currently an open and ongoing law enforcement investigation, a motive is yet to be determined and it would be premature for us to

at his suite in the mandalay bay on the 23rd floor, we are now told that he had 23 guns with him some of them rifles, modified, some semiautomatic weapons, a massive that he had to sneak in his hotel room since thursday, gun by gun apparently, they're processing four different scenes. one is hotel room, two is the cent area, police also had to go through his home in mesquite nevada in about an hour from here and a second home, a vacation home in northern nevada, the death toll appears to be staying at 59 dead. >> just describe to me the mood tonight because you know, we were out there earlier. we had a live report and we saw the streets just empty out there. that's not the vegas that a lot of us know. >> no, it's quiet. listen. there's nothing happening back here. if you compare it with the scene last night, first of a joy, huge

and down the strip then with the screaming, the rat tat. and almost dead silence, parts of the strip, we came in a couple of hours ago, were still closed off. there are still people here. the airport was going in and out. of the hotel rooms are open, they're still lit up but a different vegas, almost somber, not a word you associate with this down. >> we had a briefing a little while ago, did they give you a sense on when we might hear more on the investigation? >> reporter: they've been giving us updates every two hours we expect another early in the morning, what we haven't heard is motive. that normally comes out right away. the fbi jumps in, starts scrubbing those electronics, the local folks go through the homes and they find notes, they find e-mails, they find posts on facebooks, this guy we're told by the brother was a great guy's he bought their 90's-year-old mother a walker. sensible her cookies. we only hear good things about him coming from the brotr.

10 million people saw at least one of the political ads bought by the russian government half of the ads were seen after the election suggesting russian efforts window beyond meddling, the company said it's possible there were more political ads they've yet to identify. staying on the cyber front, white house advisors ivanka trump and jared kushner reportedly sent hundreds of e-mails from another private e-mail accounts. the e-mail address is now the third linked to the kushner family. politico said the two had access to the accounts and received hundreds of white house government e-mails since january's many are internal travel documents and schedules. but some also reportedly contain official white house materials. first monday in october means the first day of the first full supreme court session of the trump presidency picked to fill the 9th seat of the

. 59 killed and 527 people injured. all day long it's been a steady stream of thoughts and prayers, the emotional, moral support. there are some who chose to use the tragedy jumping to conclusions about who the gunman was and what the motivations were and many think politicians should save the posturing for another day. what we know is a sick man got his hands on deadly weapons legally and took it upon himself to extinguish the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for so many, it's not my place to debate the second amendment or the merits of gun control how do we avoid the next deadliest? the for starters you don't do it by finger pointing. the people who lost their lives weren't just democrats or republicans, they were human beings and in the end, that's what it's all about. that's the final five
