some of those people from our area who survived and some who didn't. i know we are searching for some kind of meaning in the chaos. some kind of light in the darkness. the answers do not come easy. this first week of october has been a difficult one for all of us. we sure are glad you're with us on we're getting all through it together. good day d.c. it is just the third of october. >> listening to tom pete pet tee. he passed away at the age of 66. it's interesting. my history with tom petty goes 30 years literally the first concert i tried to get tickets to. >> you can't be that old. >> well, i was two. figured out how to work phone and dial up tick master at the time. i looked it up i was funny i was reading a review from the show of 1977 when he charged with the georgia satellites and saw him with the grateful dead as well. my point is, i was looking at tom petty stories. and you know that you made a mark on the music industry when rolling stone magazine puts out a list of the 50 greatest tom petty songs. >> right. >> exactly. >> far from one hit wonder as you can be. not just the 5

released. but the 50 greatest tom petty songs. number one by the way was american girl, number two was refugee. but, yeah, here's what i always thought about tom petty this is no slight against tom petty because i loved his music. i think so many people did. but growing up as i did house full of musicians and understanding how music works, tom petty to me had mastered the art of taking a very simple melody, taking three or four cords, and then creating something that sounded so original. >> yeah. >> so they were very simple songs on the surface from musical standpoint, but then just turned into things that everybody was singing along and everybody was doing well. >> my introduction him was free fall. my recollection was free fal falling. i remember i didn't -- i thought he was scary looking and eye i don't know why. maybe video and just becoming of age when mtv and all that but it was a melody that stuck with you. because i'm free falling. just humming it. and then as i learned more about him and his

very, i don't know, melodic, soothing something about his sound which is so original. >> peaceful. >> yeah. yeah. >> he was rock and roll. >> he will will be missed wonderful instrumental lift. he'll be missed. >> we're tall talk more about tom petty throughout the morning. we got two hours of good day. in the meantime in this hour the big story at nine tributes pouring in for the victims of the violence las vegas much this was the scene at the campus of unlv59 people died and 500 hurt. while we do know who did it, how and when the big question still remains has to why that gunman today it. >> here's what we know so far. stephen paddock had a pension for guns. high limit poker and real estate deals. police have execute add search warn at the gunman's home but so far it shed no light on a possible motive. investigators also continued to comb through the evidence left behind in the sweet that he used in the m

inflict the carnage. in his room officers found ne nearly two dozen weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition. in his home, they found 19 more firearms. >> so those are the facts what we know in the meantime this morning flights from las vegas are still come into our area. returning passengers sharing incredible stories. melanie alnwick live at reagan national airport where she has been throughout the morning. mel, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. we know we had couple of flights coming in to bwi and dulles this morning. another flight coming in from, here into vegan national tonight and many other connects flights as well. look, there are so many people that were affected by this who either new folks who were there in las vegas who were in las vegas and then just the ripple effect. so many thousands of people who went to las vegas for weekend of fun and ended up leaving their trips with just fear and panic. we're talking about police officers, nurses, teachers,

daughters, people from every walk of life, and some of those people affected so deeply are from our area. we first want to talk about tina frost. she is a 2008 graduate of arundel high school. friends started gofundme page to help with what is going to be a very long recovery. her mother with such a touching post on that gofundme page saying tina is out of surgery. they removed her right eye where the bullet was lodged. they took a bone from her forehead to allow the brain room to swell. she's in coma on a ventilator. she can't breathe on her own. she's at least in icu for week. they're going to have to see how she responds to stimulation but until then, she says, we won't know how bad the brain damage is. then we have denise and tony burr diet tis of west virginia they have been looking forward to the route 91 harvest festival for months. denise tweet add picture from the festival just an hour before the shooting began. then yesterday tony posted this heartbreaking message on facebook. it saddens me to say

wife of 32 years a mother of two, soon to be grandfather of five this evening in the las vegas shooting. denise passed in my arms. i love you, babe. we learn about bill wolf from gofundme page. he's a youth wrestling coach from shippensburg, pennsylvania and he is missing. his condition unknown. bill and his wife robin were at the concert but got separated in the chaos. this according to the shippensburg greyhounds. the youth wrestling league he was involved in and they tell us that family is traveling to las vegas to try to find him. and travelers returning home to reagan national last night were just simply relieved to be in place of safety the sound of gunfire ricocheted far along the vegas strip. >> there was a huge stampede and swarm coming right through the doors. all of the dividers everything people were running over it and all knocked down, and, um, slowly people started to get up and right as we went to get up, they turn back around and a

struggles to provide for many who have lost nearly everything. and both of these tragedies raise difficult questions in congress. from disaster recovery funding fights to renewed debate over gun control. after las vegas the country and federal policymakers may have to fiss another difficult issue as well. hardening shot targets with real questions about high rise buildings, for instance, should more be done to 15 everyone? >> i don't think there's not a whole lot you can do. for every convenient event that is overlooked by a hotel it's overlooked by an apartment building, an office building where do you stop that access control idea? i don't know how it can be done probably. >> we've had these debates before. trying to strike that balance between freedom and safety. it's a dough bait that will wage on and if you're on social media by any means you see that people are clearly divided on this issue a lot of people saying, listen, you know, you cannot risk our freedom for the sake of making everyone safe but there's got to be middle ground because i just think we're

anesthetized to all of these killings. what do you do? what do you do? >> it probable system though when you think about it it is subjective. because some people are willing to give up certain, you know, freedoms in order to be safe and other people are more ardent about wanting to be free. you're right. it's definitely hard to find that middle ground, but a discussion that needs to be had certainly. >> again, i don't know what the answer is and i don't know how you can stop some crazy person from getting a weapon. if he wants to walk in a free society which is what we live in. if he wants to talk down the street and start shooting people, i don't know how you would stop that. >> right. because he's a person that wants to kill people in a free society. he can get a weapon and basically go to an open place and start shooting. so i don't know -- i have no idea what the answer is. no clue. >> i don't think a lot of people do. it's a difficult situation to be in. but something has got to be done. i'm telling when you these sootings happen, it's almost like we reported it and we move on with our lives and then it

>> yesterday marked a dark day in u.s. history. you saw the headlines. the new coverage all day about las vegas shooting that claimed the lives of 59 people. injured over 500 others were a gunman stephen paddock shout into a crowd at the route 91 harvest festival in vegas. sadly this is not the first incident at a concert. earlier this year the bombing a tack outside an ariana grande concert in manchester uk in 2015, there was the par shooting during eagles death medal concert. as we try to heal and move on from these horrifying events do we process our feelings of sadness, of fear? and more importantly how do we talk with our family members and young children about these events? our next guest here to help us take those first steps and joining us live via skype and youth and family counselor michael magill, jr. thanks for being with us again today. i think the -- >> good morning, d.c. >> good morning again to you. i think the question all of us are asking what would make someone snap in the

paddock did? >> well, that is an interesting question. the challenge is no one really nose, right? i fine it interesting though this is actually mental health awareness week. so you see how some of these things are coming up i'm glad we're having these conver conversations. but mental illness is real. you know, that's one thing. we talk about pyschosis were people are having challenges mentally that can cause someone to snap. political anger there are a lot of reasons but the biggest question, we process, we heal, we deal, we talk about these things, because this is not normal. folks are normalizing this dysfunction because it's happening so rapidly. you know. >> are there overt sign that is anyone could have seen that paddock was displaying that perhaps was missed? it really depend. it depend on his behaviors. if he's regularly, you know, angry, regularly talking about shooting someone, that's a sign. if he's regularly talking about depression or -- that's sign. regularly talking about harming people politically. that's a sign. even looking

is he really infatuated with weapons. when you look at some of the data on the case we see that he had a number of weapons in his hotel room. some of those weapons should not have been purchased by a regular every day consumer so those types of things can give someone an alert somebody might be off here. challenge is because the law in las vegas isn't clear on how folks can have weapons and the registration process is really hard to determine when someone is if someone is going to snap or just a weapon collector. >> now there's so many layers to that. i want to also talk about how we talk to our kids in particular. our family members about this. you made some wonderful points yesterday about, you know, letting your children know. listen i'm scared, too. this disturbed me, too. >> right. >> i think it's important to reiterate our audience may not have seen it yesterday. what should you say to your children about this latest tragedy. >> that's really good question when i talk to young people and families at schools ored adults at a conference we have that same type of desire to serve

to save our children. but i have to let parents and caregivers know number one parenting is hard but number two, we cannot save our chi children. it is okay not to be okay. so set the tone in the house hold. let your kids know it's okay to weep. it's okay to cry if you must mourn with those who mourn. but we cannot save our children. what we can do is try to protect them as much as possible but also cultivate a level of airwayness and raise their consciousness so they'll be able to be resilient being, they're able to rise strong in adversity and be self sufficient. we have to acknowledge that those who love and belong in this world will no suffering. it is an up evidentable our job is to teach them how to work through the suffering and how to cope and how to actually own and act november their feelings because when people don't acknowledge their feelings, these things -- people begin to normalize the dysfunction and this is real issue. this is crazy and so many people are hurting and don't have the atlas to espresso giving our outlets to say, hey, here's

what do you think? how do you feel? and while young toddlers may not be able to really articulate how they feel, they're still in that formulating phase of understanding grief and loss really helping them cultivate empathy is really good. so helping them do service projects. write letters or there was pictures to the ones -- to the family members of the ones who lost their life. teteaching them empathy is huge. with teenagers having real conversations because, ya'll, they think they're so invincible but they're not. >> right. >> so these can be those eye openers for them to talk about boundaries and safety and why we have protection plans in place and to help them. >> absolutely. >> help them really understand what it means to be safe. >> michael mc gill we could talk to you all morning long. you're so insightful. >> i know. >> we appreciate your words. >> unfortunately we're out of time. pease do come back at any time you're in d.c. make a stop here at the loft. we need your insight especially in these troubled times. michael mc gill, jr., thank you so much for your time. >> thank you so much. i hope people take this time to hug and love on their families because this is real and

in the wake of the horrific mass shooting in las vegas, nevada, democrats are demanding more gun control. las vegas police say they have recovered 42 firearms belonging to stephen paddock the alleged gunman behind this shooting. 23 of the weapons were found in a hotel room that paddock allegedly used to fire on the crowd below. another 19 guns were found in his home. the white house press secretary cautioned though against gun control alleges laying in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. saying now is not the time for policy discussions. meanwhile, tensions between the united states and cuba continue to escalate. over the those mysterious attack o

government workers in havana. that affecting their hearing their balance, their vision. the trump administration is now preparing to ask cuba to reduce the stapp at its embassy here in d.c. by 60%. that move follows last week's decision by us officials to cut its own embassy staff in havana by a similar amount. here locally now prince george's county police are looking for the man who sexually assa assaua young girl while walking home from her schoolbus stop. this happened last thursday around 2:30 in the afternoon on devon hills drive at grass mirror court in fort washington suspect grabbed the victim, pulled her between two cars and then inappropriately touched h her. she was able to get away. the ceo of wells fargo is headed to capitol hill today and he will not get a warm reception from everyone in the district. group of local demonstrators and d.c. residents will be outside in an effort to push the d.c. council to stop banging with wells fargo. this hearing comes nearly o

tom petty a member. washington redskins monday night football victory just literally slipped right through their finger last night. we had said before the raiders game they don't do well in prime time and they proved us wrong again the raiders but last night just didn't work. some big plays like that one to vernon davis 69 yards something like that great play. 50 seconds down 33 kirk cousins shows to josh dotson got it for a touchdown. aww. >> had the catch. >> didn't nail the landing so it didn't count. they had to settle for field goal. field goal tied the game. but they left the chiefs enough time to get down the field themselves. the chiefs did just that a couple of key plays and they were able to get themselves into field goal range as well. and then bring on the rookie kicker had never played in the nfl before this game first field goal as an nfl player. he missed it. so the confidence certainly was gone. no way he would make -- right down the middle. that was good enough. >> really. >> last play of the game the chiefs scored on defensive touchdown the skins were trying to make magic happen and

brown sugar cinnamon. >> brianna, walks us through the steps of making stuffed bagels i know you stay up all night baking these you went from making 400 week to making 3,000 bagels a week? >> that's right. that's right. just last year i started the company with migrate friend julia she can be here today. she really wish she can. she went from being economic consultant by day to being a nighttime baker i learn to, um, hone my skills to make the greatest bagel we call the best bagel experience in the world. >> yeah. >> and then i get all my inspiration from my grandfather. my pop me i name the company after. >> i love that. that's where you got the name from great family experience congressing with him. >> from him and my mom. my mom used to put a bunch of food on the table. she call eight pope morey. she used to work long hours from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and put all this food on the table and then she guys you mix and match it i'm not cooking to night. i'm going to go lay down. >> i like her style. >> brianna, show us how

what do you do? you roll the dough? >> yeah. so at first we let the yeast rise a little bit. then we roll them up into little bit about 39 grams of dough and we round them out. we lay them on a flat sheet. we boil them. we put a little bit of honey in the water. to add little flavor to there. once we are finish boiling them, we will put them in the oven at 4:25 for about 14 minutes altogether. and then this is what the result would look like. >> they look so good. how do you stuff them because i know you have stream line the process now that you're making so many you take the bag of cream cheese and stuff it inside with enough to give it flavor? >> yes. we just poke a small hole in there and then we go on and squeeze a little bit of which cream cheese in there. >> what's your favorite stuffed bagel that you have here? >> the one that you tried which is that greek it's one of my favorites. >> how about you, since you've had so many of them over the years perfecting this? >> i got to go with the one i made first the
