>> reporter: we have new information from the fbi out of the norfolk area. tonight they are basically wanting to push forward a media effort in the charlotte area. you remember that's where she was located. authorities saying that they want to get the word out just as soon as possible to anybody in that area hundreds of miles away from where she went missing in the virginia beach area. let's take you to some video. this is what authorities are wanting right now. a spokesperson for the fbi in norfolk told me that they are planning to do a media push in charlotte as they try to get help from the public there. they want to know if anyone recognizes ashanti or her car. you might remember ashanti's car was found in norfolk and when we asked the fbi that they believe the car was driven back to norfolk, they said that could be a possibility. and they don't want to exclude anything from their search. the fbi is conducting

investigation tonight. they are saying that they're working around the clock to make sure that they get this solved. as you were saying a funeral is being held tomorrow. by the way, you might remember a reward was offered for information to help find ashanti. that reward is now being offered for information that leads to an arrest in this case. one more thing. the cause of death has not yet been announced but the fbi expects the medical examiner's final report soon. live in the news room, matt ackland, fox5 local news. >> ♪ >> now to breaking news out of montgomery county. the maryland man arrested in connection with the disappearance and murder of his pregnant girlfriend has been indicted on murder charges. tyler testifiesier was indicted in court today. his girlfriend went missing in early september. her body

flatted damascus. she was four months pregnant. wallen was a beloved teacher at wilde lake high school in columbia. tire thieves who work as fast as nascar pit crews have been targeting cars in fairfax county in recent days. >> they've been stealing all four tires from at least four cars since monday. fox5's paul wagner in a parking garage where the thieves struck earlier this week. paul. >> reporter: hey, guys. take a look at this. tires gone from this car. they're also gone from the other side of the car. i'm on the fourth floor of a public parking garage here in the alexandria section of fairfax county. this is just one of four cars that was targeted this week here in this neighborhood. this is an acura. this is not a high end luxury car. there weren't a thousand dollars rims on these cars or this car i should say. but the thieves are targeting camaros and regular sedans and we're going to show you now the video of another car, cam camaro

thieves earlier this week. she says she didn't have fancy wheels on her 2017 chevy camaro. she says they were wheels that came with the car when she bought it on august. on monday she learned about the theft when a fairfax county detective knocked on her door. police dusted for prints all around the car which was left on two concrete blocks. it's unclear what the police got, if anything. now, the owner of the car says she had wheel locks on all of the tires but the thieves were able to defeat them. now she's out hundreds perhaps thousands of dollars for new tires a rental car and any damage to the car the thieves may have caused. there's no word on any leads at this point but there are cameras at both of the exits. it's unclear if those cameras are capable of recording. >> the first thing to me wasn't shocking it was just upsetting because here i am, i'm the victim now. i have to pay 500 deductible. i have to

towards my rental. it's a headache. when you go to management and ask what can you do for me, can you compensate me for the things coming out of my pocket because we're on your property, we should feel safe and they're telling you there's nothing we can do. >> reporter: now, there are three things experts say you can do to try and defeat these thieves. you can put wheel locks on every single one of these lugs. that would slow them down considerably they say. you can also put what's called a shock sensor on the car that would be connected to your alarm and they also say another way to defeat the thieves is to turn -- turn the tires so that it's not straight like this but that it's angled out. so it makes it so much more difficult for the thieves to get that tire off quick. 'cause these guys work quick. they're in and out of here very, very fast so if you can turn your tires, they say, that's going to help a lot. we're live in the alexandria section of fairfax, paul wagner, fox5

>> more than 30 prince orchard high school had to be treated for hornet stings. it happened at the shopping center across the street from the school as the students were heading to class. >> here's fox5's anjali hemphill with the latest on this story. >> reporter: it's easy to see why prince orchard high school students hang out at this doughnut shop in the shopping center before class. it's directly across the street from the school and we spoke to a bug expert today who tells us what came out of this bush this morning were actually yellow jackets which are hornets, not bees. >> it was chaos. everyone was running and it was funny. >> reporter: might not look like much but this buzzing bush gave hundreds of quince orchard high school students quite a scare after hundreds maybe thousands of yellow jacket hornets charged out from inside and attacked everyone in sight. >> i got stung like right here, right here and then like somewhere on my b back here. >> reporter: many students stung multipl

some had no idea where they were coming from. >> i was walking on my way to class and two bees landed on my arm and stung me and then one went inside my shoe and stung me. i got stung right here on my bicep and i got stung on my toes and once in the finger. >> reporter: as the yellow line jackets swarmed the students fire and ems swarmed the high school across the street. >> we did evaluate 32 students all of whom had been stung by bees. some had multiple stings. in fact, three of them we have transported to the hospital purely precautionary measure but again, allergic reaction to a bee sting can be a very serious condition but none of these transports were serious. >> this time of year the colonies are highly aggressive. >> reporter: bug expert and university of maryland professor michael raffl says yellow jacket hornets can build their nests underground which can easing catch people off guard. >> they're changing over from production of workers to

now that nest is working at a fevered pace, those workers and those guards are going to be highly agitated, they're going to be very vigilant and if anything comes and disturbs that nest, they're going to pay a price and i think that's unfortunately what happened to the students today. >> reporter: he says while both bees and hornets have an important role in our eco system, they should not be feared as long as you keep your distance. >> bees are not going to be interested in stinging you when you see them in your landscaping garden. it's only when they're protecting that nest and who can blame them for that. >> reporter: all right. so, we spoke to that bug expert who told us if you ever find yourself in a swarm like what came out of that bush, the last thing you want to do is to start swatting at those things because that's only going to make them more angry. he says your only option is to run. yeah, just run. in gaithersburg, anjali hemphill, fox5 local news. >> you got to run. t

plan today, senator rand paul and i'll tell you, you know, you can't help but think back on the really public feud that the two had on all of the efforts leading up to this to repeal and replace obamacare over on the hill. the president really working and trying to get that yes vote from senator paul and him continuing to hold his ground and not give in. well, today, he called it the biggest free market reform in a generation here in america but here's the problem. i mean, when you sign an executive order, the problem is they can easily be overturned by future presidents. now, the president didn't acknowledge this fact today when he was giving his remarks but he did say that he still wants to see a repeal and replace effort executed on the hill. now, i spoke with niles stanage of the hill publication about just that. take a listen. >> the president really had to go to this as a second or third f

after these efforts to repeal and replace obamacare via congress simply failed. that continues to be a political failure even as he tries to do things by executive order in this case. for lasting change you have to pass legislation generally speaking but the president is claiming still i think that he has the votes for that. that simply doesn't appear to be true. >> reporter: well, whether or not he has the votes, that did not seem to slow president trump down today. he was already on to his next piece and legislative agenda. at the end of his remarks when he signed the healthcare -- the healthcare executive order, he was on to tax reform and putting public pressure on senator paul to get behind him in those efforts. of course, we continue to keep you updated on everything in the white house here at fox5. reporting live at the white house, ronica cleary, fox5 local news. >> a warning from president trump tonight in a series of tweets. the president said he may pull back federal relief workers fr

he tweeted we cannot keep fema the military and the first responders who have been amazing under the most difficult circumstances in pr forever meaning puerto rico of course. the president's tweets come at a time when 90 percent of the island's residents are still without power. puerto rico is also now facing a growing health threat from disease brought by the conditions after hurricane maria. a third of the island's drinking water is still unsafe and hospitals are running short on medicine. business is incredibly slow there because tourism is down and many businesses are still closed. >> in -- >> my name is nashay morton. >> instead of gifts for her birthday this 12-year-old girl decided to give back. she's a sixth grader at north forestville elementary school in forestville and she started project give back 500 to collect 500 cases of water for victims of hurricane maria and puerto rico and after just two weeks of fundraising

surpassed her goal. now she needs help on trying to deliver those donations to the island. >> all right. we need a break from this cold drizzly weather. >> that said, it's much clearer outside today than it was around this time yesterday. >> true. >> sue is standing by with a look at what's on the way. >> yes, i hate to be debbie downer jim and sarah but i think it will get a little bit worse later tonight. but it does look better than it did yesterday, that is for sure but we still have a lot of clouds and there's a couple of pageants of light showers and drizzle getting closer. most of the day has been at least a little bit better visibility and a lot drier than yesterday was, although we had some very heavy rain late last night and early this morning. so, this is going to continue to get closer to the area. i'll get you in on radar and we're certainly not talking about anything heavy and really it's just the light test of sprinkles, just a couple of spots like annapolis patuxent river and bwi reporting a couple light showers. this is the pattern around the radar site right now. we're telling you all of this because if you have plans,

later tonight you still want to be ready for the possibility of some patches of drizzle or at the worst maybe a very light shower. here we are at 5 o'clock and i just wanted to show you not only do clouds hang tough but you can see there will be a few passing spotty areas of drizzle or showers, so again f-nothing that would cause any problems or any delays, that is for sure. at 11 o'clock tonight, mostly just a lot of clouds and cool temperatures, too. that warm jacket will come in handy. some places are already down into the 50's as you can see, gaithersburg is 59, winchester 59, d.c. is 63 degrees and that is significantly cooler in the last 24 hours with a 10-degree drop since 5 o'clock yesterday, gaithersburg 11 degrees cooler and so is culpeper as well as baltimore. so, bottom line, if you are heading to the game we'll show you that and forecast in a moment but it's the east wind loading us up on the marine layer, that low level flow keeps some areas of fog around, the clouds around, the drizzle and mist from time

light shower. so, for game five, we think that as the cubs roll into town the weather will be better than it was in chicago yesterday but we still forecast a chance of some drizzle, 62 degrees, could even be a little cooler since we're already down to 63 degrees and a little bit breezy as well. you notice those breezes out of the east at 10 to 15 miles an hour. most of the rest of the evening 60 degrees at 9 o'clock with a couple of showers around. 11 o'clock again, light rain, drizzle, spotty showers, that is about it. hey, we still have to go through this again tomorrow so be ready for that and we will certainly see a bit of a changeup for the weekend. after we get through our drizzly repeat on friday. jim and sarah, that's an update on what you can expect this evening. back to you. >> thanks, sue. ♪ >> huge night here in d.c. game five of the playoffs for the nats and the kickoff concert at the d.c. wharf. >> big word how people are going to get home. video of the grand opening of the wharf today. that's why fox5 was

>> ♪ >> this is fox5 local news at 5:00. >> time to check your headlines right now. in prince george's county police are looking for two missing girls in two unrelated cases and the first 15-year-old courtney freeman last seen along west chester park in college park and also missing is 11-year-old ashley martinez cabrera last seen on mechanic street in mount ran near. if you know of their whereabouts you're asked to call police. >> a 19-year-old virginia woman accused of leaving her baby in the

to go bite a man during an argument. police say she got into a fight with a man in woodbridge on sunday. at one point she left her baby girl in a stroller to chase the man down. fernandez is charged with child neglect and domestic assault and battery. >> a fox5 viewer sends us this surveillance video of a man in her dave way going through her car. the woman says nothing was stolen from the vehicle but there has been a spring of car break-ins over the this evening manassas and bristow. police continue to investigate. >> ♪ >> breaking news tonight a federal grand jury has indicted a herndon man for threatening to murder members of the cia. william weaver the second is charged with two counts of threatening to assault and murder federal officials and officers and three counts for sending threats to injure people. the indictment alleges that between august 23rd and september 16th, weaver used a twitter account to post threatening

>> ♪ >> now to a fox5 exclusive. a northern virginia family says their daughter was targeted by bullies for wearing her natural hair to school. >> the have id video made the rs on social media. tisha lewis has the story tonight. jim and sarah not enough if you ask this victims mother. in the meantime this incident happened a couple weeks ago here at brentsville district high school. since then more than a million views and counting on the video of the incident on facebook. the students involved are all in ninth grade. take a look. [laughter] >> reporter: this video first appeared on snapchat and then facebook. it shows white students using a pencil like a dart and throwing it into an african-american student's natural hair. that student is darlene taylor's 14-year-old daughter who is a ninth grader at brentsville high school in prince william county. >> thought it was

find a girl who has hair that's not like -- that was not like there's and maybe they thought it was funny to try to see if something was going to stick in her hair. >> reporter: a prince william county school spokesperson says the incident is deeply concerning and the behavior is not condoned in any way and taylor agrees. >> my daughter was doing exactly what she was supposed to be doing. she was doing her work. when they posted the video, they were supposed to be working. as soon as i saw the video my husband and i decided to e-mail the school. we e-mailed the principal and we waited for a response. well, she did respond on sunday saying that she saw what happened and that they would talk to my daughter on monday. >> reporter: taylor says after that initial exchange, radio silence brentsville administration for more than a week. she reached out to the principal again and learned the students using the projectile received a slap on the wrist. >> they told her to apologize and then

point moved the students around in the classroom. the message here is to learn how to treat people even if they don't look like you. >> reporter: and from here this top pick will likely be on the agenda at a meeting focusing on cyber bullying tonight. in the meantime the school district says administrators here are not at liberty to speak directly to the issue of how the school addressed this incident saying disciplinary issues are confidential and cannot be discussed. darlene taylor says that this incident happened not once but twice before the recording that you see on social media. she said she instructed her daughter to say something to the teacher but goes on to say that her daughter is shy and introverted. now an attorney representing the young lady who threw the pencil at the other student, this attorney tells us that in no way, shape or form did his client or is his client guilty of bullying or was this racially

tisha lewis, fox5 local news. >> ♪ >> yet again another incident of racial bias on a college campus in our area, this time the university of maryland in college park. three times since monday someone h scrolled swastikas on the walls of a dining hall. tom fitzpatrick has the story. >> reporter: this is not the first time we've talked about this kind of thing. it has happened at american university. it has happened at georgetown. it's happened at george washington and now once again, here at the university of maryland in college park. let's show you the scene. this is called the diner at ellicott hall. it's one of the many dining facilities here at college park right next to the football stadium. now, campus police tell us that on three separate occasions, on september 28th, on october 6th and on october 9th,

drawings were found inside the wall of a men's room in the dining hall. those are described as containing both offensive bias language and swastikas. now, this investigation is under way but we talked to some of the students here. they'll tell you frankly they are disappointed by this news. they are saddened by this news. but not one of them says they expect to hear the last of this kind of thing here in college park. >> this is kind of growing and festering and getting worse and worse and we just have to do something to stop it. >> i'm really not sure. i mean, i'm kind of surprised at this. >> our president wallace loh tries to make this campus as inviting as possible for all of the students. >> reporter: now, you may remember just recently campus police arrested a 54-year-old man in another incident. he was charged withdrawing swastikas on garbage cans. as far as this investigation goes, law enforcement tells us they have conducted

>> absolutely. you know, it should be this time of year, you know, some really comfortable weather and it has turned more comfortable. it's certainly cooler out there but at the price of some dreary weather. the good news is we're not talking about a lot of falling rain, it's just that drizzle, mist kind of deal that we've had all day long. it's a little difficult to dress for but like i said going into the break maybe a jacket with a hood is your best bet, some layers. it will be cool and breezy. but not really enough for the umbrella. low visibility as you look at gray skies at the capitol dome. we're kind of entrenched in this gloomy weather for another 36 hours or so. we should begin our clearing out process on saturday. areas of drizzle possibly light rain showers. it will be a lot like today with not a lot of rain, nothing that might even really accumulate but just drizzle of the a slow climb to the sunny warm weather on saturday and it's going to feel like summer on sunday so we're back to the way we started this week by sunday. really unusual how warm

second half of the weekend. overcast skies, light showers backing in from northeast to southwest. that's our onshore flow. a lot of this isn't making it to the ground and it's again that drizzle mist thing and just really can't come up with a good term for it except thing ordeal. it doesn't look like there's anything out there. count on that fine mist tonight. 64 in annapolis, 63 frederick, 60 in martinsburg. our temperatures have been steadily falling from earlier this morning when we were in the upper 60's and as a result, compared to yesterday when we had temperatures in the 70's, we are a good 10 degrees cooler and we're going to continue these temperatures just to be in the 60's again for probably the next 24 hours or so. so, again, if you're heading out to nats park tonight we're looking at temperatures right where they are for first pitch around 8 o'clock, drizzle and light rain, breezy and cool. so, it is also pretty chilly. maybe not as cold as it was in chicago last night, that looked really cold and

probably not as windy but certainly on the cool side. i want to switch gears for a minute and show you this. we've got hurricane ophelia which is way out in the atlantic but it's remarkable because it has been strengthening with winds sustained at 100 miles an hour and of ophelia has set another record, being the strongest storm this far east this late in the season. it's unusual for mid october to have such a strong storm and also un unusual to track up into the uk. it will be extra tropical by the weekend. crossing scotland england ireland with a lot of wind and rain as post tropical storm ophelia. high pressure towards our north and east, the onshore flow does continue into tomorrow. a few spotty showers but it's less of a falling rain and more of just a mist. light rain and drizzle for tonight with temperatures falling back into the 50's, 58 here in d.c. on an east wind and tomorrow more northeasterly wind, 68 really just kind of a guess. we may be in the low to mid 60's most of tomorrow. it's going to be cool. but then
