today that answer he gave in that confirmation hearing, that answer that he had never met with russian officials. turns out a couple of days later, he did and had to recuse himself from the russia investigation, why did he say that? sessions today indicated that he didn't understand the question, and that is why he gave the wrong answer. >> i took that to mean not any casual conversation, but did i participate with russians about the 2016 election that something was wrong. every one of your previous questions talk about improper involvement. i felt the answer was no. >> reporter: that line of questioning only the tip of the iceberg, they also got into daca and immigration situation in the country. sessions said that the administration is open to negotiating extension of daca with congress. however, he held firm on the

they will cancel federal law enforcement grants to any cities who declared themselves or behave like sanctuary cities. session said it is a matter of public safety and not open to negotiation. >> we're asking that when they, the city arrests somebody, that's illegally in the country, for some other crime, to communicate with us, give us notice before they're going to be released back into the community, because we may find our ice officers may find they're due to be deported. >> reporter: remember we told you the other day, a maryland federal judge was examining the trump latest version of the travel ban? that judge issued his injunction this morning along with a judge in hawaii. now, the attorney general was asked about this in this hearing today, he said the justice department attempts to defend their travel ban and they intend to

>> the president's executive order is an important step to insuring that we know who is coming into our country, it's a lawful, necessary order that we are proud to defend and indeed most may not know supreme court already vacated one court's injunction against that order. >> reporter: also interesting to tell you, jim and shawn, sessions was asked if he has been interviewed by special you counsel robert mueller. so far, sessions said he has not, that raised a lot of eyebrows on his meat, given his recusal from this investigation, that's your sessions paluza tonight from capitol. >> it was quite informative, thank you >> spirited. the controversy over president trump's contact with family members of fallen u.s. service members growing >> florida congress woman fred enrique wilson is standing by her claims that the president made isn't

to the grieving widow of a falling soldier >> are you sure you heard what he said that the president said he knew what he was signing up for? >> yes, he said that. to me, that is something that you can say in a conversation. but you shouldn't say that to a grieving widow. everyone knows when you go to war, you could possibly not come back who have. but you don't remind a grieving widow of that. that's so insensitive. so insensitive. he should not have said that. and it's he shouldn't have said it. >> we heard push-back, white house of course, again, defended the president. sarah hackabee-sanders saying that the president did not say that. >> what we should point out i believe when the report came out. we heard about it in the newsroom. again, it came from a democratic congress woman, not from the family. today, the "washington post" speaking to, i believe the sergeant's mother, had
6:38 pm
played out similar to that. either way, fox correspondent kirk jenkins is telling how he's defending himself. >> the remains of army sergeant david. johnson arriving in miami international airport tuesday. the family was there to greet the coffin after getting a call from president trump which had democratic congress woman said was riddled with insults and sarcasm >> he never said the word hero. he said to the wife, well, i guess he knew what he was getting into. how insensitive can you be? >> reporter: the president made the call after being accurate sided for not contacting family members of johnson and three other soldiers killed morning two weeks ago but he denies making insensitive comments to johnson's widow tweeting, quote, democrat congress woman totally fabricated what i said to the wife of a soldier who died in action. i have proof, sad.

some prominent republicans are coming to the president's defense saying he's committed to supporting military families >> his compassion and care is so obvious when he's with these families. >> reporter: meanwhile, johnson's family is looking for answers about the incident that led to his death. he was killed by sizzling,ed militants in an ambush. it's unclear why the four soldiers were separated from the rest of the group and why traveling in an unarmored vehicle >> they do have concerns. they have questions, they want answers. >> reporter: congress woman wilson is pushing for an investigation into the ambush, but there's no word from the pennsauken on when or if that will happen, in washington, griffin jenkins, fox news >> the president in that tweet said he had proof and today, sarah hackabee-sanders was asked about that, and she said there are no tapes of the conversation but there were other people on the phone call, so >> do you find it

either way, regardless, that the big dispute is over gold star families on both sides? the way this came out. it started because president trump unprompted said he was doing something that president obama did not do. and now that's why this is under the microphone at this point. so some of you out there may say why are we talking about it? it's a controversy that the white house inflamed from the get go >> is this is what we talk about, president trump sort of brings these stories on themselves, what do they call it >> whether he said that or not, whether he said that or not, that's why this is -- that is is why it's in the headlines right now. >> let's talk about a different headline, the weather. certainly, a lot chillier than this time last week >> but i have a had new headline now, we're not going to be dealing way frosty night tonight. it will be chilly but not frosty. and a little bit of a warming trend is about to begin. you may not notice us so much tonight, i wanted you to see that overnight lows will still head for the low 40's to near 50. but that's better than
6:41 pm
that we bottomed out at last night in the dulles area and 45 degrees here in dc. so again, not as chilly of a start tomorrow morning, but noticeable cool in the air. i wanted you to see that as we go forward from 71 degrees, i believe it was, today to 73 tomorrow, friday, about 75, saturday we're right around 76. and by sunday, 77, we could use a little rain i don't have it in the run-up to the weekend. and but we do see a system coming next week that may bring beneficial rain in this direction. that would be beginning monday night and into tuesday. enjoy this gorgeous week that we've had and it looks like it will continue with wall-to-wall sunshine tomorrow minus the frosty windshield. jim and shawn back to you. i don't know if you noticed this, we have maybe because we're watching tv hours and hours a day, a virginia governor's race is heating up >> i have noticed it >>
6:44 pm
depending on how you view things, this could be a referendum on the trump presidency. ythanks so much for being here, i think it depends which poll you're looking at. it had lieutenant ralph northum ahead by 14 points and real clear politics poll had luke a 3.5 difference between the two. where do things stand >> there was the monmouth poll which shows gillespie ahead by one point. this is really coming down to a sprint at the end of a marathon and i think what we need to keep in mind is that gillespie always breaks late. remember back in 2014 everyone counted him out and said that he was down. and done against senator warner but the day of the election, comes within one point, this will be a very interesting race. >> there's been all this talk about this being
6:45 pm
when you look at ed gillespie, he's the fartherest thing from a >> ed gillespie decided to keep the president at arm's length and. he's been welcoming of the endorsement but at the same time he didn't even retweet the president's endorsement of him on twitter. he tried to walk this fine line, he needs to keep a lot of those establishment voters on his team while winning more of the western side of the state and you hit the nail on the head. while northum can bring in obama and he brought in biden last week, there's no heavy hitter for gillespie. >> do you think that will make a difference? like you talked about, biden came in, obama is expected later on this week, will that make a difference to voters >> right now, the a race of inches. every little thing counts. we're within the margin of
6:46 pm
now, obama has star power. he won virginia he's definitely going to get the base out for northum. we're hoping this will be successful >> if you put the trump card, so to speak, aside, what's the big issue for voters here? what's the main issue that they're going to go to the poll with if they're not considering who's in the white house >> setting aside the white house, i think what we're seeing is that gillespie has done a very good job at making crime an issue and al making the economy an issue, even though we see he has a 3.4% unemployment rate. these are his strengths, going into the final stretch he'll repeatedly hit those, remember the ms-13 ads? those worked because that's the issue. on the flip side, northum will be hitting education and healthcare because he's a physician. >> we got two and a half weeks to go >> losing track right now. i really think so. >> there's a lot going on, thanks for coming in. >> well, marching from t

. the nation faced the devastation of hurricane maria in puerto rico, the deadly wildfires in california and it's mass shooting in las vegas >> what are the psychological effects for americans all across the country? dr. shetha, say your last name >> chakabordi. >> we have been when you look back over the hurricane after hurricane, and then what happened in las vegas, that's a lot. i mean, what kind of effect does this have on us >> these have been some
6:50 pm
devastating events that americans have experienced in these last few weeks. i've studied risk for a decade now. what we see is that people really attribute a lot of values how they perceive risk, how catastrophic they feel it's going to be, there's expert that attribute how many humans have been killed by a particular risk or event. both are problematic and it's problematic because values can overestimate or under estimate a risk. and then if you just look at fatalities where you're not considering is those who have been wounded, those who have been damaged psychologically, those first responders who come in, following something like what happened in vegas and what they witnessed. you really need to consider the impact of all of these additional effects that really will psychologically affect people. >> i have to tell you every time we see some sort of massive mass casualty event, something like the hurricanes, or terrorist
6:51 pm
do you talk to your kids about this? we tend to forgot about the toll it takes on us out there. >> that's absolutely fair. in fact, 70% of american adults will say they've experienced something very tragic, and 20% of that 70% is likely to develop some sort of mental illness following that like a post traumatic stress disorder, ptsd as it's known. it's not to say just because you've been through something traumatic, that will occur but it's important to note that it can and you don't have to to have been through it directly, just people like us in our homes, relatively immune or, you know, distant from primarily being affected by the hurricanes or by the shooting, we're still witnessing it. and that is taking a psychological toll. those are the kind of things we need to think about especially when it comes to children and adolescents, they're pretty good vulnerable to that type of information they're seeing, the pictures, the racks they will have and
6:52 pm
them psychologically >> we got 15 seconds. you're saying we need to talk about it. share and get feelings out >> we need to talk about it. need to look out for the symptoms that our neighbors, friends, family could be experiencing. this isn't a problem for them. this is a problem for all of us, increased stress, increased psychological issues will result in enhanced disease. lost productivity and that will affect all of us as a society, no the just individuals. >> thank you for joining us tonight >> thank you so much for having me. >> we're back after this.

ralph northam: i'm ralph northam, candidate for governor, and i sponsored this ad. narrator: ed gillespie wants to end a woman's right to choose. ed gillespie would put the government in charge of a woman's personal decisions, not women and their doctors. as governor, ed gillespie says, i would like to see abortion be banned. if ed gillespie would like to see abortion banned, i would like to see i would like to see i would like to see that ed gillespie

promoted to look back at the three hurricanes that really ravaged so many regions, but i'll tell you, it really felt like it focused mostly on hurricane maria and what happened in puerto rico. that really felt like the main focus. though there were speakers there who were affected by hurricane irma and the other hurricanes as well. so first i want you to hear from senator warren. she took to the stage with very tough words for the president. take a listen. >> it has been four weeks since hurricane maria swept across puerto rico. four weeks. and the response has been too little too late. so we're here to tell president trump do your job. >> reporter: that's the thing, as you said at the top of the story, you know, at first, t

pressure on congress, but really, the energy within this entire event and all of the people we spoke with, it was this focus on president trump. people had just like senator warren, some really tough words for the president, who either are from puerto rico or connected to people there, family members there, take a listen, especially to what this first woman had to say about that video and visual of president trump throwing out those paper towels. take a listen to this. >> the government, donald trump throwing towel papers to the people. that's not help. for me that's a humiliation. of if i was there. i would have thrown it back to him and hit him right on his face. >> i wanted to let the president know that we part of a united states too. and

>> reporter: what's your connection to the hurricane location >> basically my whole family lives there. i feel trapped. there's no way i can help because it's beyond my ability. i'll bring my voice to bring awareness to get more help they desperately need. >> reporter: the administration is, of course, defending what they've done. tomorrow they will welcome the governor of puerto rico to the white house to continue to push forth in their efforts to help those people, who are still in so much need of assistance at this time no matter how you feel about the politics of it. back to you, jim and shawn >> they're, ronica, thank you so much, we appreciate it. of course, we've been hearing stories still that, you know, large percentage of the island is without power. we know the governor hopes to have power back to at least 90% by some time in december. >>
