. this is fox 5 local local. at 10:00. tragedy in texas after a gunman opened fire in a church killing at least 26 including children. what we're learning tonight about the shooter. it's a story you saw first on fox 5. allegations of grade fixing in prince george's county. what one whistle blower is saying about the investigation to fox 5 tonight. a gloom sunday for the dc region, when will the sun return? the news at 10:00 starts now. we begin with that tragedy in southern texas, a gunman opening fire on a children killing at least 26 people. a pregnant woman and a number of children among the dead >> it happened in sutherand springs about 30 miles outside of san antonio, it's the deadliest mass shooting. alleged

miles away if the church inside of a car. >> evan lambert has been following this. >> what we're learning within last few hours is that according to fox news, the pentagon confirmed that the to gunman devon patrick kelly the accused gunman was once in the air force, according to public safety official, he walked into the first adapt church in sutherand springs and shot the people gathered for a late morning service. the victim's range in age from five to 72. officials found 23 people dead inside the church. two were found outside. and one person was taken to the hospital and later died from their injuries. the suspected gunman has been identified to fox news as 26-year-old devon patrick kelly. texas authorities say the violence started when kelly walked over to the church in all black if a nearby gas station. and started firing. >> he was dressed in all black. the

participated in a vigil near the church where that gunman -- 100 people gathered near the church to mourn those victims. among them, the daughter of the pastor an pregnant woman. president trump reacted to the news tonight while in japan on an overseas trip. >> through the tears and through the sadness, we stand strong, oh, so strong. my administration will provide its full support to the great state of texas and all local authorities investigating this horrible crime >> 20 more people were injured in the shooting. a motive remains unclear tonight. reaction to the shooting is pouring in from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. just heard from president trump. president said he's monitoring the situation from japan.

people of sutherand springs texas. first lady milania trump tweeting our hearts are with #texas and senator ted cruz tweeting keep all in sutherand springs in our prayers and back here at home, larry hogan saying pure evil. in other news tonight, the race for virginia governor is just two days away and the latest poll shows the candidates are essentially neck and neck. ralph northum is ahead of republican ed gillespie by about five points, that's within the margin of error. larry hogan headed south to virginia this weekend to throw his support behind gillespie, he had line add big rally for his fellow republican in springfield. he said maryland made a lot of advances during his tenure and virginia would do the same with gillespie as governor. we'll take a closer look at the governor's race and what the outcome will mean for the state of virginia. new details in the alleged assault of republican senat

rand paul. we now know it is his neighbor accused of attacking him. 59 renee butcher is facing assault charges. it happened as the senator was mowing his lawn, rand paul suffered injuries to his face and rib. a motive still unclear. a gray and dreary close to the weekend. >> looks like it's a little bit of wet. gwen joining us to talk about what we have going forward into the work week. gwen? >> we have clouds for tonight, it's a little damp, so we're looking at fog developing to in the overnight hours and that will be sticking around for your early morning commute. in the meantime. let's take a look where we stand right now with the clouds 61 degrees in the nation's capitol. winds are from the south, southwest at eight miles an hour. and it has been fairly mild all day, and so not too bad. a little comfortable out there at least. we're going to go see changes as we move into the work week and that is definitely for

as we take a look at our satellite and radar composite. you can see a really wide batch of rain to the west of us and that is all associated with a pretty strong frontal system. that system is going to move its way across the area tomorrow and we're going to be keeping our eyes to the skies for the potential of seeing some storms that could be popping up in the later afternoon hours. looking at showers in the morning, chance of storms in the afternoon and we have a coastal flood advisory in effect until midnight, that also includes areas of southern maryland, anne arundel as well as dc, alexandria and arlington, in effect until midnight. right now, temperatures are into the 50's and the low 60's pretty much everywhere across the board. and your of night low, about 60 under the cloudy skies. and once again, we got changes in that seven-day forecast. i'll have that in just a bit. back to you. we're digging deeper in the audit of prince george's county schools prompted by claims of

graduation rate. the audit shows seniors grades are regularly changed from failing to passing and some students are graduating without meeting state requirements. 30% of those sampled didn't have records to show they earned their diploma. lindsey watts was the first to report the allegations and she has new details from the report. >> reporter: a school district that doesn't follow policy, poor record-keeping and irregularities resulting in graduation rate increases, that's how auditors describe prince george's county schools. key findings. in last year's graduating class, 159 students had more than 50 unexcused absences, the state said you fail after ten. more than 40% of graduates had more than that. investigators combed through student transcripts and found handwritten markings were schools are performing math to determine the grade change required for a student to

at one high school, more than half of graduates whose record were checked were inlegible to graduate. at another school, all students got an 80 in certain classes because they didn't have teachers or long-term subs. then the school where the records keeper resigned last year after complaints she changed students grades including her own child's. the principal said she alerted the county, but no one investigated. the audit findings do not substantiate the allegations of system-wide fraud or intimidation. kevin maxwell said he is not to blame and auditors found no system-wide fraud, he said it's about poor record-keeping and the need for training. we spoke to larry hogan >> sounds much more serious to me and i think that county needs to take it more seriously. >> reporter: you don't agree then with this idea that it's just sloppy record-keeping >> that's complete nonsense.

this was a thorough and complete investigation, and so far, we're extremely upset and outraged with the results. >> reporter: so far, no one lost their job. and dr. maxwell and his team have two months to submit a plan of action to the state >> i low pressure we get a change in leadership at the top. i personally have zero faith in maxwell as our superintendent. >> reporter: this teacher was a whistle blower in the investigation >> i was pretty horrified by the findings but i wasn't surprised because we knew it was happening in our school and so it was pretty expected that was probably happening in other schools as well. >> reporter: as bad as the audit findings are. reality may be much worse. auditors cited multiple cases where students records world war modified after they graduated including changed from fail to pass. there was also evidence of a cover-up with staff modifying records right before auditors arrived. one school employee

square shopping center. and what we know so far is that a montgomery county police officer was responding here to an assault in progress and that officer ended up shooting a man who was involved in that assault. i want to bring in montgomery county police captain paul starks now, and paul, you were describing to me what happens here, and this assault involves the vehicle over here. can you just take me through what happened? >> at about 8:20 we received a call for an assault in progress. involving one vehicle, ramming another. this is still very early in the investigation. but what we know is officer responded. got on scene. then quickly stated that a shot had been fired. subject in the white suv was hit apparently by a gunshot and had a gunshot wound, he was transported to a local hospital. he was alert and conscious when he was transported and in serious condition. the officer is being interviewed. >> reporter: d

nationally and we want to talk about some top issues. we've been sees a lot in the campaign ads >> there's this neck and neck. and on tuesday, what we'll be seeing is whether it matters whether it's an off year election because that's kind of hour the gubernatorial elections work in virginia and it's possible we'll see a lower turn-out from democrats as it's kind of notorious for democrats >> and gillespie has a little bit of one up on northum. of course, it's so tight right now that you can't tell what's margin and error and what's not and how close they are at this point. what's the pulse of the people in the commonwealth right now >> it depends on what point you're looking at. if you're looking at republican and conservative polls you might see gillespie up a couple points or beating margin of error to beat out northum but if you're looking taking the data

you're looking at northum. but 13 the last time a gubernatorial race was in virginia you got gillespie >> what are the biggest issues for people live in virginia watching this race trying to make the decision. >> they're sort of more cultural issues that gillespie isn't focusing on along with northum in terms of rule of law and immigration and when it comes to ms-13 that's pulling closer more to ten pictures pictures, between 10% and 20's % >> let's talk about that because there have been interesting ads including the one pulled from the air, the latino voters's fund add that was basically a slam on gillespie calling him and his voters a racist, if you will and then you have the mailer that went out with the white supremist, tiki torches. >> in terms of how this affects the

tuesday, in terms of whether that affects -- it's on the one hand it could be alienating northum's opponents. and there's still about 10% of voters who are unclear about who they're voting for. so that could hit him hard. >> of course, it has also national implications i know we've seen some big wigs, former presidents out campaigning. donald trump, the president has been tweeting his support but we haven't seen him on the campaign trail >> this is such a bell weather state in terms of what we can expect from donald trump's presidency and how it will affect 2018 and 2020 but in terms of virginia and whether it's a referendum on trump, giving his polling numbers a little bit, they're so neck and neck, for now it doesn't look like trump is being that big of a factor >>

i'm going to get pinched with cooler air heading our way, tonight kind of damp. clouds are lingering through and there will be into tomorrow and looking at fog in the overnight hours, can't rule that out. we could see storms monday for a very brief period of time but can't rule them out. so eyes to the skies for tomorrow then early to mid week. the showers will be hanging around before we get to drier conditions. as i mentioned those temperatures from the 70's to the 50's you'll going to have to bundle up with an extra sweater. here's a look at the rain, it's associated with a strong frontal system, that cold front will move its way across the area tomorrow and with it, we're looking at showers ahead of it in the earlier part of the day, but then by the time we get to the later part of the afternoon, we anticipate seeing maybe a few thunderstorms with it and then it will be out of the way and we'll get a little bit of a break by we get to late night.
