then they came on the loudspeaker and they told everybody to get out. that was a it ll up usual. maybe they have to clear this place out by a certain time. really quick, tell us, it looked like -- as ralph northam took the stage there was some commotion going on in the room. what happened? that's right. actually i notic ed these women during the national anthem. they stood with fists in the air while an okay pel a group sang the national anthem. so in a way that was a protest, if you will without kneeling this. then as soon as northam took the stage they began to protest. they were actually progressives further left leng than you would say ralph northam is saying that he would support a sanctuary state. that was a controversy that came the out right at the end of this race. they pulled northam off the stage immediate ly. they got him out and then he came back on and acted as if it never happened. i think the big

supporters were hoping for. tom fitzgerald at gillespie headquarters. what's it been like there tonight? >>reporter: you know, it was quiet from the get go, jim. when we came here in tonight you get that look -- you've been in these situations. you come into a room and you can feel tank bli how that crowd feels bit. we saw it last year frankly in new york. when we went into that evening last year and all the polls were saying hillary clinton, that crowd, they were convinced when we walked in here tonight there was none of that energy. there was none of that vibe. frankly it didn't take all that long to see where this was going. very early in the evening there was a vote total that came up. it was about 10 percent of the virginia electric came n. ed gillespie was up in that early return. fifty-one to 48 percent. there was no reaction in the room and it was either one or two things either nobody was in the room was watching or they knew what they were looking at and they knew it was such a small

going to get themselves worked up that slowed ed gillespie with a slight lead. the moment this thing headed south is when the numbers for loudon county where ed gillespie had lost by 20 points and then downs in prince william county. those were the two areas they were hoping for. they really took a beating there tonight. there's been so much talk of these national implications, this national idea that this was a referendum on president trump. a lot of people said it wasn't. what was the take away in the room in were people feeling that? you you rewind back to 2009 is what i've been talking about tonight barack obama had just been elected the year before and there was bob mcdonald, a republican elected in virginia. >> right. >> and then you had chris christie a republican who was elected in new jersey. you you think back, that night after the beating that the republicans took in 2008, that was the night that the republican party really did ge u

district 13, virginia elect hing the first transgender state-wide office holder. you're looking at her right now. that's dan contact roam. she defeated the guy who authored the virginia bathroom bill. that's a statement. bob marshal has to be looking at the world with some very different colored classes tonight. he is one of the most arch conservatives in the virginia house of delegates he's one of the most arch conservatives in republican elected politics across the country with some of the legislation he has passed over the year. this is a big win for the democrats. dan contact, she is a newcomber to politics. she had worked as a journalist. she had expectancy a lft time as a journalist in her previous life dog stories in a loft these towns that bob marshal has represented for on something like 13
