♪ ♪. well the democrats dominate one year after president trump's victory, which was one year ago today. they won big in virginia, swept the high profile races including governor >> and the question is, i know a lot of folks are asking what will this mean for the gop moving forward, what will it mean for democrats? as you can see from the rundown this is what we're talking about at 6:30, all eyes were on the race for governor of virginia. ralph northum beat ed gillespie by

some say it's a referendum on the trump administration. others say virginia is just continuing its trend or path towards becoming a full be time blue state. ed gillespie was gracious in defeat. the former rnc chairman tried to dis himself on the campaign trail, the president thinks his presence would have helped, this came outright after victory was declared tweeted more today, nearly seven thousand miles away in south korea. ed gillespie worked hard, we will continue to win even bigger than before. but what you can't deny is the fact that he did not win last night. yes, he wasn't on the ballot but we do flow that ed gillespie campaigned with mike pence >> and also a will say had you considered to be more of a bush rocket man knee republican in the last few weeks or month, he was using the trump style of campaigning even though he didn't directly campaign. >> he was a very

campaign for the most part up until last couple weeks northum held his first news conference today, tom fitzgerald was there and joins us live from arlington with more. hey, fitz. >> reporter: we have a whole new era in virginia politics and it started this morning right on time at 10:00 a.m. the governor elect ralph northum heading to the state complex today in richmond to hold his first news briefing as the governor elect. now, there were a couple of purposes in this but the first off was he was asked about whether or not he thought about all this conversation about whether or not his election was a direct reaction to president trump, northum said in his opinion, it was, but he made the point of also saying that there are some things he thinks the president is doing that will benefits virginia and when that happens, governor elect says he will work with the president. >> the divisive ness, the hatred, the bigot ry, the

po apart, that's not the united states of america people love. it's certainly not the commonwealth of virginia that they love. there are things that president trump talked about wanting to do for this country that would be very beneficial to the commonwealth of virginia. for example, building up our military as you may may know, i'm a veteran of the united states army. >> reporter: now, during his news conference today, governor introduced his transition team which will oversee the transfer of power from the recall of administration to the incoming northum administration. northum says his first priority right out of the gate were going to be the economy, it is going to be healthcare, it is going to be the opioid crisis and he wants to do something about gun control, he says, now, after the conclusion of this briefly, he went across the street, over to the governor's mansion where he had lunch with trey mcauliffe. during their brief availability, mcauliffe said the rough tone of the last few weeks

administration, he blamed on ed gillespie, he said, quote, ed brought us into the gut. he was also asked about his rumored plans for 2020, is there a possible white house run in the cards for terry mcauliffe? his answer was not exactly a know >> once i finish up on the 13th, my two big missions take on charitable work but i'm also going to take a lead in the 36 governors' races i'll be out th there. >> reporter: he'll be out there. incidentally, the incoming lieutenant governor justice fairfax got congratulations today. jim and shawn they won't have a whole heck of a lot of time. they got 66 days, inauguration day scheduled for january 13th, interestingly enough, they have the inaugural

stairs up. they are ready to go. they said they wanted to get that up now before the ground freezes, they'd rather put that inaugural platform up in october and november than have to deal with it in late december. >> it will be interesting to see what happens for sure, fitz. we appreciate that, and it's been a long night. we know for you out there. it's time for you to go home, fitz >> he was up late listening to the final five. so was ronica. in virginia, there was a lot of talk about the ads, especially in the last few weeks, there were some attack ads controversial, were they plus or minus for the gubernatorial candidates >> steven cruise. he's here with us now, how are you? >> doing well. >> obviously i think a lot of people expected this to be a very long night. it was not. and you talk about the races on top and a lot of these state house races, the delegates races. there was a lot of messaging out there. we saw the latino vote come into play,

>> not only the latino vote but the immigrant and minority vote in general, there were huge gains made in things like prince william's county, for example. and the majority of the votes came from loudoun, prince william's county, fairfax county and arlington. which is interesting because when you're talking about those ads and the rhetoric that came out of them, it just goes to show that the president did energized people to go out and vote. it's just more eof the people voting against than for him, the minority, latino vote, swooped across the state and we had folks winning house delegates races, we had the governorship, by and large, it was a matter of rhetoric >> the other side will say no, this is just virginia trending to become a blue state and that's the trend it was on. do you really think this more of

a referendum on president trump or is it just virginia, just the way we're seeing things trickle right now? >> look, the gains were made in this districts and in regions of the state that were already trending blue, we have to talk about the fact that voters turned out to vote and decisions are made by the people that show up. so yes, whoever would tell you that has a point. however, i believe that trumpism was also on the ballot there and virginia was a bit of a wall on that onward march, there's a little bit of both >> when we look at the race, and look at the ads in particular, you have some people that say the latino victory ads that went out towards the end were villa if iing people who sympathize with the controversy then you have people saying the ads on the other side were to scare people against latinos voters. do you think it just got a little ugly on both sides >> we always talked about fact that the

whether people go out and vote or not and i maintain that the rhetoric got so heated and ugly and divisive that people had already made up their minds well before those ads came about, but that energized them to go vote. so that's an important factor to count on there. . >> we appreciate your perspective tonight. the virginia statehouse democrats picked up 16 seats, this was the biggest for democrats since 1899. they picked up see the loudoun, prince william, fairfax. we're learning about the another virginia race, about the nation's first openly transgender person to be elected to a state legislature. dana ker roem defeated bob marshal. sponsored the failed bathroom bill that would have forced transgender

she said her inspiration for running was simply bad traffic on route 28 in manassas and i know a lot of people can sympathize >> that paints the idea that all politics are local. that's something we talk about the national implications but when you talk about who's going to plow the streets and pick up the trash? that's a big deal. >> it's a big deal. >> political pundants see this as referendum on president trump, we want talked about this one year ago today, he beat hillary clinton to become the 45th president of the united states. many voters were still split on their opinion of how he's doing his job. take a look. >> i think that the status of the united states in the world has plummeted like we're not that ally that you can trust. >> he thinks it's an asset to be unpredetectable, but to the rest of the nation, that's very unsettling. >> i'll deal with the talk if you can walk the walk. what i mean if i can deal with all the things said about him

>> business is doing well and the country is doing well, i can deal with the talk. >> i think he's an -- i just -- >> ok. >> strong words there. >> julie kelly is a contribute or. so much has happened in about a year. i'm curious from your perspective what has changed? people who supported president trump a year ago, there's a lot of people who say they would do it all over again. >> i think that's true. i mean, speaking from myself, i would definitely vote for him again. especially considering what our options were at the time. most of the people i know voted for donald trump. i think that they feel that they made the right choice and would vote for him again. i think there are some legitimate concerns about his approach. but i think that there have been successes that have been overlooked as well. and speaking from here, i'm outside of chicago, i think there's more disallusion met with the republican congress than with president trump right now. >>

see yesterday's sweeping democratic wins as? so many people say that's -- you know, it is a referendum on president trump's presidency, how he's handling his job right now. >> i think you can't argue with the fact that he was the key driving force in the democratic turn-out. i believe it was time for democrats over republicans. you can't win in that environment. u seen action on healthcare or tax reform or immigration reform they've promised seven years. i think you had a lot at play but you can't argue with fact that donald trump's presidency played a big role in turning out democrats yesterday. >> as we look forward and look ahead to the next couple months and you talked about the republican congress, big fights could be in on tax reform. i want to ask your perspective, can they score a victory on tax reform, the victory they

when it came to healthcare reform >> i hope so, i think tax reform is more important i think it can be done incrementally. if they get an early win, which hopefully the republicans in congress, i hope they're not miss riding what happened yesterday. this is a lot of this is targeted at them. and so i hope that even if it's an incremental step and we can start the process of reforming the tax code, that would be seen as a win. so i'm hoping that they will be able to come together now and get that resolved and if the democrats plan to argue, that's their choice, speaking out here in the heart land, and red states that, you know, that has been that way for governors and legislatures and that have supported trump, the anti-trump, the hatred towards president trump is not going to be a winning message out here for the democrats. they will have to come up with policies themselves. and so maybe this will be a
