the flames and the smoke got so bad, they couldn't get inside, another man came by with a fire extinguish also trying to get inside, but ultimately, the neighbors had to wait for the firefighters to arrive. smoke was coming from the upper level of this house on lorraine drive when natalie said she saw a man on front porch calling for help. >> he went right back into the house. immediately right back in the house >> that's when her husband and another neighbor brandon clay tried to get inside. >> heat melted the door down, i tried to go in but the heat was too much, we both try to do. he tried the back door, tried the side door, i kicked the side door open, >> i didn't hear him say anything but help and my husband got out and he heard him say we have to get out and my husband asked him where was he but by that time, the flames were coming out of the

>> reporter:ness mit said the woman who lives there is confined to a wheelchair and the man who ran back inside is her son, clay said, as i was trying to get inside, he could also hear cries for help >> i heard the lady asking for him. i just wish i could have got in there. feel so bad. i got grandparents. >> reporter: clay said he grabbed a fire ask extinguisher and emptied it on the fire but it wasn't enough to get him inside >> any idea at all on how the fire started? no indication from the occupants. or any of the community member, so we'll leave it up to our fire investigators to determine the cause >> he was devastated. very devastated. >> that's ms.ness smith. she said her husband was the one who tried to run up on to the porch and get inside and can hear the people calling for help inside, we did speak with that man off

he told us his story, he declined to tell it on camera, from what we understand now, the two people who lived inside that house again, a mother and her son again, she was apparently confined to a wheelchair and he had trouble getting her out of the house. we're told they're in very critical condition. temple hills fox 5 local news. more breaking news >> let's head to tony with latest >> this is news of yet another fire in maryland in waldorf maryland in charles county, unfortunately this is being reported as a deadly fire. some time a short time ago early this afternoon, these are live pictures from skyfox, this occurred in what appear puts to be a recreational type vehicle that someone was living in. we're told that when firefighters responded and were able to get into this structure, they did find a woman deceased, she was a disabled woman who apparently had been asleep

this recreational type vehicle. and she was pronounced dead there at the scene, we're told that as you can see the fire is under control at this point. unfortunately, this is the second deadly fire to be reported today in charles county. again, this one occurring a short time ago in waldorf maryland. as we get more information about this, we will certainly bring to you. jim? sarah? . . less than 24 hours after an alarm hearing on a ramped sexual harassment on capitol hill, there's a bipartisan push to ditch a system they claim protects the guilty and punish the victims >> since 1997, a congressional fund paid out $15 million in settlements but nondisclosure agreements keep them a secret. now there's an effort to change that. tom fitzgerald on the hill with more on this, fitz? >> good evening, this effort is being led by california congress woman jackie speier. she testified yesterday that two current members of congress have

on the hill. now, we wanted to give you a look at exactly the process you would have to go through if you were sexually harassed and work here on the hill. look at this thing, this is the flow chart. you start you have by reporting to the office of compliance, that's not all. then you have the to go through mart counseling, then mandatory mediation, you have to sign a nondisclosure agreement to keep all of this quiet. at cool off period, finally, then you get to follow former complaint, that entire process can take up to six months. this is a process that congressional officials are saying tonight is not only outdated bud protects the harassers and victimizes the victims. >> more and more current and former congressional staffers are coming out and bravely telling their stories about how they experience sexual harassment while working here. this is shameful. there is a serious

harassment problem in congress and too many congressional officers are not taking this problem seriously at all. >> right now in the process, the only one that has counsel paid for by the taxpayers of this country is the harasser. >> mediation of the harasser has house counsel it is the victim that pays or appear with no counsel. >> reporter: i told you last night how the congressional office of compliance has paid out more than $15 million in settlements since back in 1997 to more than 230 individuals who say they has been harassed on capitol hill. this new me too act would changes that you system. one of the things they wanted to is establish yearly mandatory sexual harassment training to make sure this doesn't happen in the first place. now, c

now is that the guilty harasser, they get to keep their name and their identity secret because of those nondisclosure agreements we've been telling you about, also this practice where the taxpayer paying out the settlement. that too would end under this new litigation, the guilty party would have to reimburse the u.s. treasury for every dime of that settlement they're responsible for. live on the hill, tom fitzgerald fox 5 local news. it is an easy target for cars, >> the incidents happened within 24 hours apart. just within the last week. fox 5 tisha lewis is joining us live now from manassas where this has been happening, tisha, what's the latest? >> well, sarah and jim, one incident happened within walking distance from where we are right now. this manassas auto shop as you mentioned there's been three incidents in three separate neighborhoods nearby. the manager here tells us that it's not what's under your hood that the thieves

it is what is under your car inside the catalytic converter that they are targeting. >> basically it's what the converter is made of. two important metal, platinum, which is really expensive, they cut the converter off, take the converter somewhere else and usually on the average, you can get anywhere from 60 to a hundred dollars per converter. >> reporter: bob steven went ons at the converters are removed in about 15 minutes flat with a saw. they're nestled underneath the car, some cars have two, now, city of manassas police say all three reports of catalytic converters being stolen came in thursday into friday and in he want each case the victim's car was parked in front of their home where they thought it was safe. one incident happened here on the nine thousand block of sandal wood drive. police say they think the cases are connected, and a person or gr

. nearly 200 people were arrested on inauguration day after protests broke out in downtown dc, today, jury selection began in

many trials that will take place in response to those arrests. in one case, the u.s. attorney for the district attempted to gain access to months of facebook posts for several defendants which opens as conversation where your facebook privacy starts and where it ends. >> political reporter ronica cleary takes a closer look how the court ruled and if how the aclu feels about it. >> they're weighing in let me tell you, we have all heard about search warrants for your home, maybe car, but in the digital media age, search warrants go beyond physical property and into your digital presence, in one of many cases involving the inauguration day protests, the u.s. attorney obtained a search warrant for facebook page of the disrupt j20 group and the personal facebook pages of two protesters. now, the scope of the warrant was vast. with the government seeking to access the entire contents of the accounts in question for about a 90-day period. this would include private messages, friendly

photos and more, the aclu pushed back filing motions in dc superior court saying that the warrants violated the defendant's fourth amendment rights and where an extensive invasion of privacy. court rule by limiting the scope rider facebook exclude the following from information requested in the warrant. they had to exclude all third party information, to give you an idea what this means, this includes the identifies of about 6,000 people who like or follow the disrupt jay 20 page on facebook, they had to exclude the names of friends on person pages in question and limit the date range for photos. now, even in light of the ruling, that does limit the scope of the warrant, the aclu doesn't think the ruling went far enough to protect the privacy of the defendants. now, we spoke with scott michaelman staff attorney at the district of columbia

ruling >> the judgely ruling imposed some safeguards that government will have to follow. it didn't go far enough in protecting our client's personal information. it's not enough that a judge issues a warrant based on probable cause. if the warrant is for everything in your house or everything in your e-mail account or everything in your facebook account. the warrant has to be particular i seed to what the government has shown probable cause cause to look for or to put it more concretely, if the government has probable cause to look for a car on your property, they can search your garage, they can't search your bedroom. >> the aclu tells me they're consulting with their clients and weighing their options on a response if any. we reached out to the u.s. attorney for the district, for their reaction to the ruling, they had no comment. back to you. next week, the wood son high school football team will play in the turkey bowl on thanksgiving day without a team of its players, this after video surfaced online of some players

getting into a fight with an opposing team. according to dc schools, this video first appeared on twitter but since been taken down, it shows a fight between woodson high school players and eastern high school. the teams were playing each other last weekend for a spot in the turkey bowl. >> the woodson team put in a lot of effort and, you know, put in a lot of time and energy this season, and we believe that they deserve the right to continue to represent the school and play the game. and so we have, i think about half the students maybe a little over half who although they left the area, which is against the rules, to do so, we believe that they deserved opportunity to represent woodson high school and go on and play the game. >> there are also nine eastern high school players who are facing suspension effective next season. we're talking about football. 51 degrees right now, live look at the white house as it gets darker earlier and

it was nice today, it was sun. >> we sure did, we need that day jim, we had no sun, so at least we got a sunny morning, and part of the afternoon, but those clouds have come in from both sides now. wouldn't that be a great lyric for a song? and anyway, we got the clouds coming in we also have this frontal boundary that is approaching with showers just about to western pennsylvania and the western edge of west virginia, that will be heading in our direction in the overnight hours, so temperature-wise, we get a little push of warm air ahead of that we actually topped out at 55. we're still at 51 right now, a little warmer than we were at 5:00 last night. it's 51 at manassas, 50 in hagerstown, 52 for frederick and 51 for quantico and fredericksburg. most of the early evening we're going to keep dry, we've got 49 degrees expected at 7:00 with a lot of clouds, by 9:00, about 49, and by 11:00, probably still dry in most areas, 48, but that frontal boundary may be able to

. this is fox 5 local news at 5:00. dc police investigating a shooting near the dc maryland board before 7:00 this morning in the 5200 block of east capitol street, the victim found about two miles away near the i 295 onramp. police found a man inside a car suffering from multiple gunshot wounds taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. police say they're searching for two suspects who ran away from the scene. a deadly fire inside of a mobile home in charles county, you heard us mentions this off the top. it's the second fatal fire we have reported today. this one happened early this morning in a mobile home in the town of brian road. no one else was hurt. police are looking for a man they say raped and sodomized two young girls. 57-year-old mike heyman was questioned last month but took offer from the area before police could issue a

matt ackland fox 5 local news. there are new details in the deadly shooting rampage in northern california earlier this week, the death toll at five after the wife of the alleged gunman kevin neil was found in their home. her body found in the floorboards. 14 other people were hurt. neil eventually killed in a shoot-out with police on exact motive is unclear. neil's mother said he was frustrated with an ongoing dispute with his neighbors who reportedly claimed he was running a meth lab. he called her and said i'm fighting against everyone who lives in this area >> i am aware of incident where is neighbors reported shots coming from that residence on every time we responded, we would try to make contact with mr. neil. like i said, he was not law enforcement friendly. he would not come to the door. actually, his house was arranged in a manner where we couldn't detect him being there. >> i

the national transportation safety board releasing new surveillance video from a 2015 british airways airplane fire. the blane on the way to london from las vegas when the left engine burst into flames. the bowieing 777 quickly came to a halt as black smoke filled the sky. from another angle you see emergency chutes. 157 passengers and 13 crew members were on board. no one was seriously hurt and the ntsb said the fire was caused by engine failure. let's take you over to southwest airlines. where a pilot is under the influence trying to carry a loaded gun in his carry-on luggage. he was arrested at st. louis international airport trying to board a flight headed to vegas when

cori >> heroin and pills that's what wicomico authorities say they found on monica snee. special education teacher. deputies arrested her after the month-long investigation after they received a tip in early october. detectives said their investigation revealed she was selling heroin and prescription pills through the wicomico county. including on campus at park side high school, that's according to those investigators. they stopped snee after she drove off school grounds, when they stopped her, they found 100 capsules which tested positive for heroin inside as well as nearly 350 pills of oxycodone sub ox zone strip as well as $3,000 in cash in her car. in a statement. the wicomico county public school system said we have no knowledge that any students were
