they all have non-life threatening injuries. >> unfortunately we cannot say the same for a baltimore city police detective. he is fighting for his life this morning after being shot in the head. overnight the massive search for the gunman continues. annie yu getting updates live outside the hospital in baltimore. what can you tell us at this point, an me? >> reporter: hey, good morning to you holly. good morning, everybody. that's right. the 18 year homicide detective, 18 year veteran homicide detective still fighting for his life here at the trauma center in downtown baltimore, and you know, this is someone that the commissioner kevin davis is calling someone who is dedicated 18 years of his life of course to serving and protecting this community and here he is fighting for his live calling the shooter cold and callus and as of now, that is the latest that he remains in critical, grave condition. we know that he is also on live support still at this hour. of course, our thoughts thoughts and prayers are with him and his family, and police commissioner kevin davis says the officers

not being identified at this time. they are still searching for the man who shot the detective. i want to show you some scene video here of closer to benefit place in west baltimore. that's about a ten minute drive from here. commissioner davis says the 18 year veteran was on duty. he was in the area of the 900 block of bennett place following up on a homicide case and the detective noticed a man he was acting suspicious. so he approached him to ask him few questions. and that is when he was shot in the head. this happened just before 5:00 o'clock yesterday. now, the shooting comes at a particularly violent period here in baltimore. so far this year, the city has seen more than 300 homicides and baltimore mayor catherine pew called for an end in the gun violence saying enough is enough. take a listen. >> first, let me just ask we pray for the family, the family has arrived here, and we ask prayers for the family. and let me just take a moment to remind us how dangerous the streets of our city are at this

scrutiny this morning for the alarming number of times that patients have escape. over the past eight years, more than 17 escapes have occurred. the most recent a man who has been committed in the hospital ever since being acquitted of murder by reason of insanity. the 59-year-old escaped on sunday and made all the way to california before he was captured three days later. more than half dozen workers are now suspended from hawaii state hospital. the hospital is also under fire for waiting more than eight hours to call police. the three ucla basketball players thanked president donald trump and the united states government during a public apology. the president intervened after they were arrested in china last week accused of shoplifting much the president said in a tweet he hinted that he wanted a thank you and indicated if not for him the players were headed for ten years in jail. the three freshmen have been suspended indefinitely from the team. it's still unclear what form of punishment they face from the ncaa. developing in other news

about just the importance of this film, the light that it sheds on our veterans, and the concept of just kind of taking care of the people who fight for our country. >> that's the thing that attracted me to this story is that it was an exploration of the similarities and the contrasting experiences of the vietnam era soldier and the today's soldier and how we've changed and how we've stayed the same. it's also a look into how men bond and how they -- how they handle their ptsd and any kind of troubles that they may have have had, um, and it's very valuable. the three main characters in this have three distinctly different ways they handle their own dramatic experience. and by going into that and honoring the validity of those

others who are watching who have military experience to say, oh, i'm like that guy and my friend is like that guy, and maybe just talk about it. art works best when it begins a conversation and doesn't end it. >> yeah what i think is amazing about the conversation that's going to be had with this film is that this is a book that was written well years ago. vet seen years ago you shot it last year. and yet the questions that it asks are almost eerily relevant in terms of what is the american flag mean? what does it mean to be a patriot like kevin referenced? how do we go about caring for our veterans? when you watch the film now, after all that has hammed just this past year in our country alone, do you see it differently than when you were actually shooting it? >> i suppose. but, you know,

the movie explores the patriotism of service and the ability, you know, the military life, you are in a family and when you're in that family, you're able to criticize your own family members f you're outside of that family, you're not. the criticism that these soldiers have of whether or not their assignments or valid or worthy or safe, um, are all very good to explore. conversation, start the conversation. >> mr. cranston one of things i love about this film again as you mentioned showing the patriotism of these gentlemen and happening to this road trip idea of the movie is really really fascinating. link letter is such a great film maker writing dialogue and g getting to interact with each other. do you have veterans in your family did you speak with veterans specifically to kind of get into this role, did you basal specifically on anyone? i know there's a book but did you add anything

experiences? >> my father was in the navy air core. my mother was in the coast gu guard. it was -- they were very proud of those branches and when they served. i did talk to lot of different servicemen, veterans of foreign war and my character was an amalgamation of different parts of different people to form him. he is a guy who is unfortunately self medicating to cope with his trauma. but the nobility of my character, sal s that he is also a deeply rooted friend. he'll do anything for a friend, and the great thing about last flag flying is that it explores these avenues. but in so doing so it has very up lifting message it to and very funny. >> yeah. >> so while we dig in and we

don't hesitate to deal with the authenticity of grief and loss, we also explore the bonding that men have and the true friendships that are found. >> one of my favorite lines your character says is, you know, men the men and i think that what you just talk about talks about that. whether you're liberal or conservative are you going to get something out of this movie and enjoy it? >> oh, yeah. it doesn't walk a line of that. it questions all areas of that. and it also is very honorable towards those who served. i just came back from uso tour in germany and the uk. and i got to tell you i was very impressed with this next generation of servicemen and women and officers. they were noble and energetic and dedicated and kind. it gave my wife and i a whole new outlook and

tuesday when she wept before magistrate here. this stems from a strange incident back on january 20th. rose mcgowan was coming to the d.c. area to participate in the women's march on washington. she arrived on united airlines flight to dulles. the night of the 20th that was the night of the presidential inauguration. and she apparently left her wallet on the plane and in her wallet according to airport authority police were two bags of cocaine. now, arrest warrant went out for rose mcgowan february 1st. facing these felony drug potion charges. she only turn herself in this week she says because she thought maybe this was a setup. indeed she believes she left her wallet on the plane but she says there was no cocaine in them. she toll the new yorker magazine she has done drug in the past but was not using cocaine in january. she believes maybe she was being set up because back in january she was in the process of maybe coming forward thinking of going on the record

allegations of sexual abuse, sexual assault against the hollywood producer harvey weinstein. of course it made big news since because she was the first one basically to out him, but she was in the process of deciding whether she wanted to do that or not. put her name on the record. so she claims that in the process between february when the arrest warrant came out and now that before the harvey weinstein story came out some he harvey weinstein was trig to plant a story in the new york post about her arrest warrant here in virginia on these drug potion charges. so she herself rose mcgowan put out this tweet saying, trying to beat the new york poe to the story are they trying to silence me. there's a warn it for my arrest in virginia. she thought it was part of a setup to try to silence her with these allegations to harvey weinstein. >> only now is she this week facing the charges. turned herself in on tuesday. appearing at 11:15 this morning here in court

labor that ever comes around. what we're trying to do is make people aware of it so they can rally around it and truly understand the magnitude of what's possible. i mean, what disease in your lifetime. we'd love to cure cancer. love to cure all these and this disease can be cured through gene therapy that's our hope, and clinical trial that we're funding is only two and a half million dollars and we've just surpassed $750,000 in that race. >> well on the way there. for folk not familiar with this syndrome which i was not either in a nutshell, what is hunter syndrome? how does it affect people and especially it's mostly kids that are affect idea. >> it's mostly kids and it's almost exclusively boys. so they're missing an enzyme because of a genetic mutation that their body, and so what's like cellular trash builds up in their cells and they can't take out the trash leak you and i c can. so it builds up and it causes their brain and their body and everything to decline over time and they generally don't live until they're early teens.

now. ten years old. >> yes. >> what is case's prognosis at this point. >> case is involved in clinical trial right now and so he is still moving. he's stable much he's learning. he's running around. harassing us and his brothers. it's a good thing. but it's one every those things where we have a sense of hope and we want other families to have that. there are other kids out there there's nothing available to them. they didn't qualify for a clinical trial. and so that's the goal of project alive to step into the gap and help other people that otherwise wouldn't get help. >> so if someone is dealing with this and they don't have those options melissa i know you're trying to get them these options the hope that is there. if they're not able to get that type of therapy or whatever it is that they need at this point, what happens to those people? >> so right now there is 1fda approved drug that helps their body but the brain slowly declines. and so if we can get these kids gene therapy young especially the hope is that they won't even feel the eff effects of huntesi

starts to decline. they lose the ability to walk. talk. eat, recognize the people in their lives. and we want to be able to get this therapy moving so these kids can actually have life. >> how does this differ from what was in the news this week when it came to an older gentleman by older i mean in his fours not old but not that young for a ten-year-old who is also under going i guess a different type of experimentation here. but it's still involved with hunt syndrome watch was that? >> that was very exciting for our community so a small portion of people with hunt syndrome don't have cognitive decline and can live until adult hood, so this trial that has been in the news is a gene editing trial, and that only allows for adults who don't have cognitive impairment to get that therapy. and ours is specifically for the majority of patient who's cognitively decline and don't even live that long. >> et cetera keep it real. you guys obviously are dealing it want the best for your son but very busy people b

travelly its entire country for your jobs. how hard is it on the family when you have someone who has these needs that are special like this when it comes to the family and for parenting and trying to continue on with your lifestyles? >> i can say this for me. i mean the disease actually impacts the entire family. anyone that has a sick family member or someone that has needs understands that. what you do, you prioritize. you start to become a aware of what's necessary and what's not necessary we talk about it as family. we understand that there's sacrifices that are made for this sake of this family member that's what you do for family. you love them, you support them and take care of them. >> i can be real. it is hard on our other kids, too. we're, you know, going full board to troy to get this gene therapy moving and trying get people on board, and they're sacrifices that i know that they feel. >> how did you find out that case needed special attention? >> well, i mean, we found out that case was diagnosed with hunter syndrome because my mom saw a tv show about hunter syndrome. and just
