little bit lake effect snow off to our north quiet conditions and sunny and bright today. it should be very nice tomorrow. up near 60. and we'll take look at the rest of the holiday week i guess we'll call this a holiday week. thanksgiving day forecast in a minute. 50 this afternoon with sunshine. >> steve. >> big story at 9:00 o'clock breaking news from overnight. the death of charles manson. the notorious cult leader who spent four decades in prison for orchestrating one of the most shocking sprees of the 20th century died late last night. holly has more on this life and infamous muss legacy. >> charles manson who had been ill and hospitalized for the past week died around 11:15 our time last night. the california department of corrections said manson died from natural causes. he was 83 years old. manson's followers slaughtered actress sharon tate and five others on the night of aug august 9th, 1969. the very next night the cult members killed wealthy businessman and his wife rosemary at each crime scene the cu

in the victim's blood. the crime shock the los angeles area where they were carried out and the entire nation for that matter. manson hins followers were arrested three months after the killings. their trial lasted nearly a year and revealed a frightening motive that prosecutors in the case later reflected on. >> these murders in attempt to start a black white race war, um to, take over the power in this country. they wanted to destroy society. >> they enjoyed killing. death is charlie's trip. manson spoke constantly of de death. their life, their life was murder. >> manson and his followers were first sentenced to death but those sentences were changed to life in prison which california struck down the death penalty. one of his followers died behind bars three others remain in prison. now it's unclear what will now happen with charles manson's body prison officials say he had no known relatives so it may be up to the department of corrections as to

that attack happening just about 24 hour ago at american university. fox5's melanie alnwick live at au this morning with the story. mel? >> reporter: hey, wisdom. we have some breaking news in this. we are told by dc police source that an arrest has been made in this case. i've been standing by looking for more information that should be coming out very soon. but so far that has not been put out to the public yet. one thing we don't know if this was actually a ride sharing driver or someone pre tenning to be one. american university put out the campus wide public safety alert a little before 6:00 last night. the incident happened sunday morning between 3:00 and 4am. it was on the main campus drive. 4400 block massachusetts avenue. that is actually the mary gray den center so it wasn't really a remote area although probably a little desserted at 3:00 to 4:0. mary grade den center is a -- a highly trafficked area. it's where people go to dine and gather

and apparently, somebody took a ride or was getting a ride a pick up there. now the victim told police that he or she believed the suspect was operating a vehicle for hire so that would be a lyft or uber type service. but there were no other details that were put out from au or dc police except to say that the two did not know each other, and police did call it a sex off offense. now, occasionally we have done stories where people have gotten in the wrong car. they thought it was their -- their ride sharing service or there have been imposter drivers and american university public safety department put out a couple of tips for students and also for the larger community just some common sense things to remember. when you are using one of these services. they say make sure you always use the company app to request a ride. to verify the identification -- the id of the driver and the car before getting into the vehicle. if you're using a taxi company, only use a licensed company. and also share your ride details with friends or family through

to who your emergency contact people would be so they know where you're going and who you're going with. travel in groups if possible. and if you are assaulted take note of his clothing appearance or details. we also know warnings in general this is just matter of practice for american university when they have an alert like this they do also post everything on shuttle buses on public bulletin boards around the campus, and again we are still standing by waiting for details about that arrest this morning. live in northwest i'm melanie alnwick fox5 local news. news. that. 9:08 is the time. the department of home land security is investigating the death of us border patrol agent kill in the line of duty. 36-year-old agent martinez died of injuries he sustained while responding to border activity yesterday. following the incident president trump push the need for his proposed border wall tweeting "we will and must build the wall". >> back here in d.c. senate republican leaders have to sell their tax plan this work to gop

have their appointment with the president tomorrow at the white house. joining us to talk about them and the event is carl witten berg. he's chairman of the national turkey federation this year. carl, thanks for being with us. >> thanks, bob. >> report roar tell me, your a turkey farmer yourself, right. >> correct. >> reporter: these two will be spared. president will pardon them and they'll live they're lives out at virginia tech. this is the 7 70th anniversary of this ceremony at the white house. is that right? >> it is. it's a great celebration and time to kick off the thanksgiving holiday and all the blessings we have as americans. >> reporter: we're thankful for turkeys. these two won't actually end up on anyone's plate but this is a tradition. it's the kick off of the holiday season. and presidents since harry truman have been pardoning turkeys, is that right? >> that's right. dzhokhar lee s. truman started in 1947 the actual first pardon was in 1989 by president bush. >> what happened to the other ones? they were condemn basically. >> yeah. they were food. >> reporter: okay. look these are males and you know what, wild turkeys will get you. but these guys

houses. i know we also got some games on thursday. 42 now in washington. 38 gaithersburg. 39 dulles. temperatures over unite into a few spots hit the freezing mark. a wind chill out of the north and west the winds are blowing about ten to 15 that's giving us wind chills in the 20s right n now. it's definitely a jacket day. even with the sunshine. we're not going to warm up a whole lot. high temperatures only about 50 or so. otherwise smiling smooth sailing here if you're hitting the roadways a couple days early you'll be fine later this afternoon. a couple of light snow showers up into northern pennsylvania that is about it for wednesday make kerri round here locally we're looking at high pressure this will keep us nice and dry. cool today. chilly tonight and warm it up a little bit as that air of high pressure slips further east tomorrow with daytime highs close to 60 degrees by tomorrow afternoon. so one day warmup and then we'll keep it cooler here with a frontal passage by early wednesday. you can see daytime highs on thursday in the upper fours but the good news, head to do grandma's house over the next couple of days you're in good shape coming home

start talking about your organization. >> we have ava and sarah and io and n agent eo will and siena and ia and eliana. >> they are chess masters in training. >> yes they are. two of the girls are the top ia and sarah the top, um, they're top 50% of eight-year-olds in the country. eight-year-old girls who play chess in the country. >> i want to you go ahead and play. we want to see how well you can play while i'm talking to miss robin. why did you start this? >> i started chess girls dc how children spend their time is important, and if girls spend their time developing executive function skills, strategic thinking, long-term planning, it shapes who they are. >> and your daughter you ran into this with a very personal reason, too, right? >> yes. >> my daughter played chess at the library and we would consistently see girls walk past the classroom and not stop by. so just by chance i brought a pink chess board for fun and girls started stopping and they didn't realize it was chess. >> isn't that

>> yes. >> yeah. okay. all right. now, what do they get from it, what do these young ladies get from it this game of chess? >> they learn how to analyze the consequences of a certain ac action. they think about strategic planning. >> um-hmm. >> among other things. >> okay. and the exciting part about chess girls dc it is free to join, right? >> it costs not a barrier. our parents donate. >> go ahead. ooh our parents donate every semester some parents donate more. some parents donate less. we are 501c3 organization. >> right we depend on grants don't nations to survive. our teachers are volunteer we would love -- we have a program at emery rec center which is struggling and we would really love donations to support that. >> you talked about volunteers. you have like a master volunteer right here in dave bennett. >> david bennett is national master he donate two hours or more
