6:30 pm
>> all right. holiday is over and congress back in session and president back from the break. and tax reform and first law makers have to deal with two democrats and republican hopeful basing sexual harassment aelss. >> from the rundown on the side of the screen this is a tough talk tonight at 6:30 ooz jim mentioned a in addition to tackling tax reform they are trying to find a way of avoiding a government shut down and of course the clock is ticking. december recess a few weeks away. >> all right. let's bring in eric garcia are roll call. eric, tax reform was the big goal here. we have all these other distractions right now and
6:31 pm
thing on their plate when they move down they make sure they keep government running and government shut down by december on top of that congress has 14 days before christmas recess and you still need to keep focus on disaster relief and focus on flood insurance and on top of that they also need to keep eye on chip, children's health insurance program. congress has a lot of things to do. on top of that it doesn't look like republicans in senate caucus can come to aagreement on tax reform. so you had senator from wisconsin saying he's leaning towards no and then on top of that you have daca and so republicans in congress have a lot to
6:32 pm
outside of tax reform. >> in general we know congress has a tough time getting anything moving. you would think it would go faster because we have republicans in control of both houses. so you mentioned a laundry list of things. we have a lot of things to get done. do you think government shut down will be their number one priority? >> i think it has to be at this point for better or worse it's hard for them to shift blame to the democrats if they have like we said control of both houses of congress and the government still shuts down they have to come up with some kind of resolution and find something to pass prayings and money to make sure that the government is still running otherwise it looks bad on their watch if republicans of the house and they have senate and presidency and still keep the government running. >> the big fundamental difference between the tax plans of the house and senate is repeal of the individual mandates. senate is pushing it and it's
6:33 pm
no will that be a poison pill if both sides pass something when it comes down to reconcile both different bills. >> it could be. i mean so for example you know for example senator lisa markoski is hoping to repeal to the individual mandate senator from alaska who was opposed to attempts to repeal affordable care actor obama care and in same respect there are also a lot of other ways this bill could sink in committee tomorrow and the mere fact that some senators want a trigger for spending to make sure that this is not a fiscally bill that will add to the deficit. that in and of itself can be something that could stop or ken more could be servetive house saying hey we promise a big tax cut and now that could be something
6:34 pm
republicans as well. >> certain lit budget huge issue but we already see the focus has been on dealing with allegations of sexual harassment up on the hill with these ethics investigations. do you think that we will see them focus more on this? we know there's two underway right now. will we continue to fok is on you this or keep the focus the priority more so on the other long list of things that we talked about? >> i think they're going to have to do both. you have to show you're serious about sexual assault and sexual harassment. in this case you have two major democrats coming up against -- you know it kind of looks like shooting fish in a barrel for senator mitch conel and al franken and i went after moore and said he needs to step aside and house speaker of the house and representative jackie sphere says he's been very compliant she's cosponsoring
6:35 pm
legislation. and paul ryan has been complaint. if it's net plus for republicans to show they're serious about sexual assault and harassment on the hill especially because of the fact that representatives like ryan costello and bruce palquinn are getting behind liberals so they kind of have to show that they're serious about it. and they can say we're serious about what republicans are doing on the campaign trail and we don't want this in the part and we don't want this happening on capitol hill as of now. >> so let's talk about a little bit of time, eric garcia from roll call thanks for joining us tonight. >> thanks so much. >> let's talk about a high profile case over alleged harassment. s president trumple will not be on the campaign trail for roy moore. he'll not go before the special election. he's attacked moore
6:36 pm
democratic opponent saying it would be a daughter agenter to vote for his opponent. >> the longstanding feud between president trump and cnn was reiing nated over the weekend. did you see this? president trump tweeted fox news is much more important in the united states than cnn but outside of the u.s. cnn international is still a major source of fake news. cnn fired back with own tweet and wrote it's not cnn job to represent the u.s. to the world that's yours. our job is to report the news # facts sglivrt that's not all the president took to twitter again writing in part we share the contest to which of the networks cnn and not including fox is most dishonest corrupt or distorted in political cover ramming of favorite presidents [ me ] then goes on to speak about a fake news trophy. ronica cleary went to talk about this one. >> ronica
6:37 pm
>> ronica, what did folks say. what did you find out from people out there? >> you know it's fascinate when that first sort after tacking tweet came from president against cn ncht international we saw like you said cnn defend itself and other journalist from other outlets were depending cnn international. and i think it's hard to have this conversation as journalists because of course we do the best every day to report the facts to report them honestly and fairly and i think we were struggling to do a good job we wouldn't be doing this job but it's opinion to think of what regular people think. we took to the streets to ask people is the concept of fake news a real one. take a listen. >> the course comes from anywhere. it's a regular source, no, but if someone's blog then i guess no. i don't. we depend on you guys for new yo
6:38 pm
do we know what's going on. unless we keep track o ourselves. but we need you all's help as well. >> why do you feel that way. >> because if it's news i'm assuming it's true. and i would think that if something is true it cannot be fake. >> it's very real. >> a lot of people don't watch the news. aren't well read. we're in this real snap society where things are quick people believe things quickly right or wrong unfortunately a lot more wrong than right. >> interestingly enough two of the people their answers were new answer really separating news outlet reporting from what has been confused as news reporting and we saw that issue come to light with the controversy on facebook. and the number of posts that were shared that were false and perpetrated by the russians and so there is a really some plex conversation
6:39 pm
you feel about the president's tweet and use of expression of fake news against more major and established outlet like cnn. back to you, jim, shawn. >> ronica i'm curious i missed press briefing today did they address this whole back and forth twitter battle with cnn? >> no, not really in today's briefing. there was a tremendous amount of focus on the president's use of term pocahontas at that event today. i would say that really dominating briefing. otherwise i think that would have come up. something happens one minute and then the whole briefing should switch gears. >> yes, indeed. i think we'll talk about that coming up later here in the newscast. >> thanks, ronica. >> before you get to gary i want to point something out. when you get to fake news in the last hour or so we'll talk about that on "the final 5" fascinating piece by the "washington post" a woman came forward claim sdmring roy moore impression nantsed here. >> it

president trump used a slur during an event. >> you are very, very special people, you were here long before any of us were here. although we have a representative in congress who they say was hoor a long time ago they call her pocahontas. but you know what, i like you. >> pocahontas is nickname he gave elizabeth warren on the campaign trail. she claimed to have american ancestory this came when he ran for senate in massachusetts 2014 her excuse i don't want to gsh what she was telling people was she was told by parents going up you're part native american when she took her parents word for it checked the box native american i don't know
6:52 pm
did ancestory.com. nevertheless that's where the controversy comes from. >> bigger controversy comes from the president using the terminology to talk to her which she said -- >> it's offensive. >> let's be honest too. sarah huk abee sanders said it was not a slur and that said this event was not about donald trump or elizabeth warren this was about people who served our country. >> absolutely. >> there you go. >> you can form your own opinion. >> well more than a year after made public president trump claimed infamous hollywood access tape is a fake. >> grabbed by the -- [ bleep ] how about a little hug. >> wow love a little hug daryling. >> grab them by the [ bleep ]. >> so that video surfaced weeks before the november 2016 he lesson recording you can hear mr. trump practicinging to them access hollywood host billy bush about touching people without their concept and he apologizedied
