happy tuesday, everybody. president trump spent the day on capital hill talking \tax\tacks reform. check the run down because that is what we're talk ing about here tonight on five at of:30. i think it's going to go better and better. i do believe this vote on taxes, which are really tax cuts and re form is going to be very important. the president's lat est push for tax reform took him to capital hill to rally national republicans and the national is debating what could be the nation's biggest tax over haul in more than 30 years. gop leaders can only afford to lose two votes and right now steve dains and michigan is not on board because they believe the bill
6:31 pm
over small business. the senate version of the tax reform bill will cut the us tax corporate from 24 to 35 percent and repeal the affordable care acts original mandate. let's get right to fox5 tom fitzgerald live on the hill. we know there was a loft back and forth especially with the president and the democrats. that's true, republicans cleared a big hurdle on this tax bill. they were able to get it out of the senate budget committee. that sends it on to the floor of the national as you just detailed it is not quite clear how that is going to go at this point as the vote counts go. overhanging all of this today was this question about the government shutdown. understand on december 8, unless they pass a new continuing resolution, they are going to have to shutdown the government today and part of what the president was going to do up here on the hill was going to be meeting with democratic leaders nancy pelosi and chuck
6:32 pm
nobody is ever going to confuse the united states congress with the objection ford debating society, but this place looked a heck of a lot less like oxford and a the lot more some high school lunchroom having a freud between two tables and here's why. look at the tweet that the president sent out. this was heading out to a negotiating session. he's calling out nancy pelosi, chuck schumer about crime, by taxings, andenning it by saying we want to avoid a government shutdown. he meets with republicans. he talks about this tax plan. then came the news from nancy pelosi and chuck schumer that there was not going to be any meeting between chuck and nancy and president trump and that they were going to try instead to meet directly with mitchell mcconnell and paul ryan themselves. well, that
6:33 pm
said, no, we're go not going to meet with you on our own. we're going to go ahead with our meeting at the white house with the president today. the bottom line, there was no meeting. no deal to avoid a government shutdown and chuck schumer was left to tan alone where the democrats did not want to come to the table today to talk about preventing a government shutdown . if the president isn't interested in addressing the difficult year agenda and wants to make the government shutdown we'll work with those republicans who are interested in funding the government as we did in april. now, we are just ten days away from that date. jim and shawn i know we talk about these government shutdowns all the time. yes, the earth doesn't keep revolving around the sun because of it. yes, life goes on. but it's no way to run a government no matter who is in the white house. it reflects badly on
6:34 pm
in everyone's efforts to get together at least on this even if the larger question of the tax bill right now is still up in the air. you know, i think everybody at home is sitting and watching this back and forth today and scratching their heads and saying stop acting like kids , act like groan understand, work together and figure this out. like you said it doesn't make the sun revolve, but there are a lot of people who depend on it. if the government doesn't run there's a lot of folks who will be in trouble, especially as we're heading into the holidays. one big difference is, a kid knows when their assignment is due. this quong knew congress knew when this continuing resolution was due. it's no secret. it's been december 8 the whole time. to constantly be in this cycle where we're coming up against these crs and it doesn't get done until the very last minute and somebody's feelings gets hurt and somebody sends out a mean tweet it sets back people's \opinion\pins about politicians not getting their work done or woin
6:35 pm
american people. this is why congress is such a poor approval rating to have for years. this is why people have no faith in government and that's your government in action right there . thank you, fits. go for it. as long as we're taking a shot at congress, it has a lot of people kraching their heads about this strategy of sending out a tweet saying i don't see a deal when you're supposed to go to a negotiating session. it's like going over to your neighbor 's house and saying i know it's going to suk, but i am going anyway. >> you ain't coming over to my house for dinner, then, because my diner dinner is good. >> the president suggested he is open to making unspecified changes to the way mills of businesses are taxed and we're talking about the tax bill here the impact on 1345u8 businesses has been a sticking point for many people. let's bring in mollie
6:36 pm
bee. hello to both of you. >> hi, guys. we have two different tax bills out there. they're both, woulding their way through government. there's a lot of people that want to see these tax cuts go through. what's the main sticking point that we're seeing between these two that could cause some problems down the road. see, i would argue that aren't many sticking points right now because we saw incredible momentum on the hill today. the president budget committee pass ed their senate package which means it cleared the way for it to go to the floor. you mentioned in a previous segment a couple different reasons that we have senators who are maybe a little bit crumb pi, but i think that he'll he be able to get there. the vote today in the senate budget committee shows that there's a loft consensus on the main principals in the bill that's lowering the corporate tax rate, making sure that families all across america get tax relief. big businesses, small businesses, these are all questions of whether or not they're treated fairly by the tax code.
6:37 pm
they're not and this tax reform bill would deliver relief for both businesses on the big and small side. >> what's your take on that. >> i completely agree. obviously the media is focused on the remained divisions. they agree on the vast majority of what this is going to do making us globally competitive with a lower tax rate. getting rid a lot of the corporate welfare, loopholes and deduction and complications that are complicating the tax code. whatever divisions there are will be hashed out when they go to conference. as mat ticketed event said they took a big step to get the bill to the senate floor. that will ideally pass this week and hash those out and finally get a bill to the president's desk before christmas. it will repeal the individual man date which we know the senate by and large seems to support that con event s. they weren't able to get the votes when it came to healthcare , does that exist in the final draft when bh
6:38 pm
house and senate pass the conference they go to congress. i think that's a really productive step forward. the most unpopular part of the affordable care act. an aggressive tax hike on middle lower and middle income american s and as it comes to paying the budget math and what have you repealing the the individual mandate gives congress hundreds much bills of dollars to work with to cut taxes on. you both take away off the shoulders of people that's a huge burden and you allow congress to cut taxes across the board. i think it's a productive step forward that will indeed be part of the final package. do you think there's anything else in there that we've seen that might hold thup or prevent this from passing. >> as we mentioned before there's a lot of consensus on the principals also of the bell cutting the tax rate to make sure that american businesses are competitive is super important. not only does
6:39 pm
benefit american businesses it is for american wages. right now we've seen lot of growth in the economy. in the past couple quarters in particular w. we've seen employment start to tick up once again. that's a really important component of both bills and making sure that the corporate tax rate comes into effect as near interpret as possible is really important. the timing on things as relates to budget rules that might be something where you see a little bit of tension between the house and the senate only because the house doesn't have the rules that the house has to quon tend with. this has to happen on the senate side. there is a lot of consensus to be adhere and a lot of inertia going forward. >> thanks for joining us. us officials confirmed north korea identified an unidentified ballistic millions. the missile flew eastward towards the sea of japa
6:40 pm
following the news on this one tonight. hi, ronica. >>reporter: hey, jim and shawn, well, it's been a quiet ten weeks since north korea tested any of its wp once, but that all changed this afternoon when we did get word the pentagon did eventually confirm it as well, that north korea tested an inter continental ballistic missile, which did land in the sea of japan. think about this, it was in the air for 53 minutes. the president was actually briefed about the launch much this is according to a tweet by the press secretary. while it was in the air, just think about that length of time for people to act and have anticipation and anxiety, if you will, oarve this launch, which did land in the sea of japan. south korea they responded in kind with a smaller missile test. now just to put this in more context you may recall just last week the united states

an official state sponsor of terror nancy pelosi and in addition they increased the sanctions against north korea. seemingly north korea, i don't know if it's a direct response, but certainly a week later now responding with this new missile test. now, in light of what we heard from tom fitzgerald earlier in the show, the president was supposed to have that meeting with both digerornimo and republican leaders. now that did not go as planned and the briefing with the press secretary was un expectedly canceled and then we heard from the president where of course he addressed the issues taking place today on the hill, but we also heard from him about this issue with north korea. now, he passed over the event, if you which, the speaking, if you will, to his defense secretary general mattis so we could hear a little bit of his thoughts on this missile launch. take a listen to what he had to say earlier
6:42 pm
response the south koreans have fired some pinpoint missiles out into the water to make certain north korea understands that they could be taken under fire by our ally, but the bottom is it's a continued effort to build threat, a ballistic missile threat that endangers world piece, regional piece and certainly the united states. thank you, general. well, it got cut off there, but the president then says and we will be taking care of this. then he did go onto say that we hewed be hearing from chuck schumer and nancy pelosi in light of the missile launch. he said things had changed, if you will over the time they had decided not to come through, but then he threw in a jab saying that they won't call because all they care about now is raising taxes. so bring ing it back to a domestic issue, if you will, at the end of those brief

metro is saying no to a merry christmas bus ad from the arch discrease of washington. the agency says it's band so-called issue ads, but that answer wasn't good enough. fox5's corey coffin picks up the story now for us. >>reporter: that's right, arch die crease of washington is cit ing freedom of speech and freedom of religious behind this lawsuit that they filed today. let me show you an example of the ads. we see them every where on the sides of buses and on the bus stops here. they wanted to put it on the actual bus, the arch

find the perfect gift campaign and it features shep heards under a star i winter sky. they've been advertising with washington metro for about a decade. when metro changed their policy recently the church tried to come up with something they felt was not overtly religious so by filing this lawsuit today they've decided to twrie to have a conversation with metro. so that's an example of where that ad would be placed along that bus. it's something we see often. thousands of people see these ad s and they're very valuable. take a listen on what the arch die crease had to a. the community as a whole loses. we had this opportunity in helping people who are the most vul vulnerable at this time of year or to help people who are lonely to connect with people in communities who can do that. >> in a statement washington metro told

ta changed its advertis ing policy to prohibit issue oriented advertising. that includes political, religious and advocacy advertis ing. the ad in question was declined because it is prohibited by wmata's current advertising guidelines. now i did reach out to metro to find out what exactly constitutes a reliblg just ad because some feel like the rules are just too broad. but this is not the first lawsuit that metro is fac ing. in fact, aclu filed the lawsuit similar to this one in august. we're waiting for an update on the very latest that happened with that one as well. >> corey coffin, thank you. by the way, it is giving tuesday but before you start donating we've got some tips to make sure your generosity goes to the right places. we're back after this.

ten people would give up their gift giving this holiday. of the 2 million americans surveyed 730 percent said they would ditch those presents if their friends and family agreed. they feel pressured to buy presents and putting a stop to gift giving would relieve some of that extra stress. they say that now. my sister tried that they sent a group text message to my entire family and said, hi , guys, let's do -- my mom was like no. that was the answer that came back. >> after all that shopping, black friday, small business saturday, cyber monday. today is giving tuesday. chevy chase trust and is an advocate for charitable giving. how are you. >> i'm well. >> how are you guys doing? a. great. this is a good day because it brings attention to generosity and encourages that and it's something we should be doing more often. giving tuesda

start off the holiday season. as you may know, 30 percent of all donations happen in the month of december, so giving tuesday is a great way to launch the holiday giving. >> absolutely. i received, i can't even tell you, countless e-mails today from different organization about giving tuesday. other people are receiving these. how do we figure out which organization is reputable and who we should be giving to? well, there are a number of resources. if you go to giving tuesday. org they have a great online tool that can help you sort by state, by city or even by the type of organization. it's all out there. you you meaninged with all these donations coming towards the end of the year, i'm cure news how much of that is because people are feeling generous, because of the spirit of the season and also saying it's almost the end of the year i could really use the deduction on my teaks. i think it's a little bit

predominantly it's the giving feeling. >> that's what we want. is there a limit of how much you can give as it relates to taxes i know there's some questions about the law and how it benefits people. most people know that charitable contributions are tax deductible . on the higher end you can deduct up to 50 percent of your adjusted gross income if it's cash. gifts to public charities. if you're donating appreciated stock then that limit comes down to 30 percent. you want to be careful of those rules. there is a big incentive to give appreciated stock because you get to deduct the full market value and not pay capital gains on that appreciation. what about people who like to give money to candidates. those are not tax deductible. any sort of political contributions to a cause or a candidate are not tax deductible. this is very excit

remember, giving tuesday is great, but we should be giving all year round. for today there's still a few more hours. i just want to mention that facebook and the gates foundation are agreeing to match the first $2 million in donation s and facebook is waiving their fees. so if your charity can take donations through facebook, that's a great opportunity to do that. i will say when you you look at facebook and i've noticed that they've really stepped up the charitable, donate your birthday to a cause. at least it gives people who may not normally think of being fill thoppic to say i'll give one or ten dollars to a good cause. >> every a little bit helps. >> thanks for coming in. it's giving tuesday. what's the website. >> giving tuesday. org. >> pretty straightforward. >> thank you. thanks for having me. >> we're back after this.

>> well, bernie san ers one of the democratic nm nation he may have to settle for grammy. he was nominated in the spoken word gratry for the audio version of his book our revolution of future to believe in. the spoken word category this year a tough one because you have bruce spring teen and the late carrie fisher up for the award. hillary clinton has won one, former presidents, barack obama has won twice and bill clinton. i don't know if i'd want to hear -- he can capture a crowd like no one else but halfway lieu the audio book i would be thinking it's larry david. >> i get that that. maybe they'll turn that into some sort of a minute i series and we'll see it on snl. air b and b rolling out a brand new feature to make group trips even easier users will be
