we're hoping they both feel better soon. >> we're glad that you are joining us. we say good day d.c. on this november29th. it's not going to feel like november29th. >> no. >> it feels like spring. >> i love it. >> almost 70 degrees. all right. we're going to check with tucker little bit later. >> good deal. first up let's get right to the news this morning headlines involve news about headlines breaking news this morning today show anchor matt lauer the latest high profile journalist taken bound die sexual harassment accusations. nbc news savannah hoda broke the news on the today show that the long-time journalist had been fired for inappropriate sexual behavior. the anchors read a statement from nbc news chairman add dak lack stating that the company had received a detailed complaint from a colleague monday night about inappropriate behavior in the workplace. lack said a company review found a clear violation of the company's standards and lauer was terminated as a result. the statement also made note that while it was the first complaint about lauer in

"dear colleagues, on monday night we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by matt lauer. it represented after serious review a clear violation of our company's standards. as a result, we have decided to terminate his employment. while it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over 20 years he has been at nbc news we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident ". you know for the moment all we can say is that we are heartbreak. >> so far no word on who will take over for lauer that will be the big discussion next. he's out lasted rotating cast of co anchors over the last two plus decades. his firing comes a

remember cbs news fired their lead morning anchor charlie rose for sexual misconduct in the two journalists just the latest in the growing me too movement that started in hollywood spread to capitol hill now taking hold in media and workplaces nationwide. so matt lauer the latest person to have their job terminated because of these allegations and accusations and nbc news just saying i have to deal with it. >> there's definitely a national reckoning that's going on that we're seeing here. >> for sure. >> but there's been several companies now nbc being the latest to take this preemptive strike that before the allegations were even out there they already eliminated him from his job and i think that is what came as the biggest shock for me this morning. >> that tells me though they have enough that they know about that they don't want others to know about by taking the strike pre eming some of the other information to get out there because i don't think that you would let somebody that high profile go without having concrete evidence. >> agreed. >> i think that it will get out there many i think i read the new york times

dense other young people to say well okay maybe i can come forward because the whole culture was that why do i say anything. >> no one will believe me. >> no one will believe me. the backlash will be on me. so when we see this tied turning i think the tide just gets bigger. >> wake up call for the powerful men who feel that they've been in position that is they could take advantage of that power. >> the bad behavior is not going to stand any more. >> exactly. >> the other big story this morning the hunt for tampa serial killer who murdered four people seemingly randomly may be over. police ending the week long search for the suspect with the arrest of how well emmanuel donaldson the third yesterday. it has been a month and a half of fear and tension in tampa over a period of six weeks. four people seemingly randomly killed in the same neighborhood of seminole heights. >> residents were told repe repeatedly to the look out for strange behavior and tolls walk around in groups. now police say locals can rest easy.

24-year-old hal emmanuel donaldson is in custody. around 2:30 yesterday afternoon donaldson showed up for work at a local mcdonald's. employees say he he had worked there for just two months. donaldson showed up wearing his uniform and then asked the manager to hold on to his loaded semi automatic pistol while he walk to get a pay day loan. the manager contacted police immediately about the gun. officers arrived on the scene with backup when donaldson then returned from his work police were already waiting. they brought him in for questioning and then gathered enough evidence to charge him with murder. detectives were later scene collecting evidence from red ford mustang believed to belong to donaldson park in the mcdonald's parking lot. during the six weeks of terror, tampa police received more than 5,000 tips. donaldson will be charged with four counts of first degree murder. so far police have not released a motive for any of the killings. mayor bob buck horn told reporters the killer doesn't deserve to walk amongst the public

reported that every graduate had been accepted to at least one college. but information uncovered by npr shows many of those seniors shouldn't have received a diploma. fox5's melanie alnwick is live at ballou high school in southeast this morning. mel, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, allison and everyone black at good day d.c. yeah, d.c. schools chancellor antwan wilson is going address some of the questions brought up by this investigation later this morning. around 11am. so let's take you back to ju june 2017 and that what was then called historic graduation at ballou high school. now, at that time, 164 students, seniors, walked across the stage and received a diploma and 100% of those who graduated received an offer to go to college. now this was a big deal. also a big deal because of what was an incredible increase in the graduation rate according to some

86%. d.c. public school says it was 64% was the graduation rate but when you put that considering that the year prior it was 57% and before that it was 51% a lot of people started to question what exactly was going on. especially after wmau and npr did you go into some of the attendants data let's show that to you. what they found as far as very high absentee rates. one of things they found one half of those who graduated missed more than three months of school with unexcused absences. 20% of the seniors were absent. more than they were present. and in april, only 57 students were on track to graduate so how did the rest of them end up passing? a lot of work and last minute extra credit quick classes called credit recovery but teachers report that they were under extreme pressure to pass students. they had requests to change f' toss ds a fear of poor val weighings by administrator i

last year chancellor wilson sat down with fox5 just before he was confirmed by the d.c. council and he talked about his goals for student success. >> we want to not only catch the national average we expect to put in place activities that lead to us beating the national average. in order to do that, though, we have to have an intense focus on that and making sure that the students who are lagging they're getting all the support they need to be successful. >> reporter: now school officials have said that they recognize that some students may have challenges in their home life that prevent them from attending on a regular basis and they really have been working hard to try to make sure that all students who need those opportunities can see and feel that they have a chance at a better future. also should let you know ballou high school last year pilot add program where they have ded dedicated college and career counselors here. really working one-on-one with the students to make sure that all of them apply to

quite noticeable when we watched the broadcast on national television much awed chance to talk to kirk about i what did he have to say. >> cousins was more candid about how poor the field conditions looked aesthetically than anybody i've heard on the record who played for the redskins has been. he said that that stadium on thursday night for thanksgiving did not look like an nfl stadium, an nfl field should. he also said he and his teammates over the years have gotten used to the fact that basically the field is not going to play properly. remember, of course, he fell for a sack at one point tripping on the ground between the hash marks. he also had an interception return for touchdown when his foot got stuck in the grass. he was probably upset about the way that it played but you look around steelers and pittsburgh were just on national tv the ravens were just on national tv. both in the same kind of region growing grass those stadiums don't have the same issue. the grounds crew work hard it does not look good when you show up at fed he can field and it's brown between

>> you mentioned pittsburgh they just college game played there three days before the steelers played there and the field look fine. so the redskins it's not a multi use facility just there for ten redskins games a year. why is it so bad? >> they do have concerts and some soccer games in august. i don't think that's why the feel looks as bad as it does. although i would say if i was running the show i wouldn't have those events there until i can fix this problem which is gone on for multiple years. but i think the bigger issue i'm not expert on growing grass, but from you read, they use a type of grass bermuda that goes dorm man this time of year after that first frost n pittsburgh i don't believe they. to ravens they don't do that. the kentucky blue grass or something like that is what they use. i believe there's a situation where what they grow is more difficult to keep alive ton keep looking aesthetically pleasing on television. the big question to me, steve, is does the grass play properly, is it still safe for the players because if it's an

it's not big deal. embarrassing watching it on tvw mares say they need to tweak the cleats they're wearing or how they go about getting ready for the game that leads me to believe players think it's an issue. i talk to many guys on the redskins before games on the side lines and have left kickers around the logue saying that's as bad as surface there is in football. >> you lose your consistency playing from game one to game 16 to end of the season as far as what the field conditions may be like. apparently we're using the warm weather grass at fed ex field. kind of need all season turf grass for next year. i want to tap something you are an expert and that is the status of these players. have we had any more talk -- talked about kirk and playing conditions what about kirk and playing in general. any more contract talk? >> so the contract talks will not row assume until after the season. what happens after that deadline they're not loud to talk until the year ends but there's a lot of rumor floating around leaked reports by way of the team it seems like nfl network that they are still in kind of wait and se

they want to see what kirk cousins can do during this final stretch run of these last five games. if he can according to network quote will them toward the post season i think what you're going to see is that the redskins are going to be similar position where they're not willing to pay what it will take to get long term deal around 30 millions. i don't think cousins wants to continue to to negotiate and haggle over that number. so what you're going to get is a third franchise tag possibility which i don't think is plausible or a first transition tag and very quick wal that would mean we could get a resolution this off season finally to this saga if the redskins placed that tag on cousins he'd be able to go shop for deal with another team. that team would then try to sign him the redskins would have five days to match that offer. they will just then have to make the decision do they want to match the offer that he science with another team or not? potential he can come back at another one year rate if he didn't get a deal with another team. >> we're out of time. i do you have to ask.

>> yes, yes. i love being in d.c. both for the theater and the movies. >> here's my question for you because obviously you're obvious dc section to the movie independence day which we've all seen and we talked about that last time you were here. now you're doing the western. how do you get yourself in that mind frame to be out on the planes back in time in the western. what's that process like? well, you know, i got a little head start in that my brother and i have had a ranch in montana for 26 years. so we're living the western more than we are living the congress, steve, so it's -- it was a little bit easier to get into that whole realm than may be would have thought and it's a great privilege, you know, when you grew up really enjoying going to matinees and seeing the westerns and a lot

colorful characters and there's something about it that gives you a chance to kind of reflect about what it is to be in america and the kinds of stories that reflect our culture. >> one of things though and getting back to how you put this together. it's great that you got had he start on the ranch. i think that sounds amazing for any of us locked in a city right now to get out into the great outdoors. but you also have to film in the great outdoors as well. on location a number of times. so were there any challenges with the filming of the movie? >> well, it was a pretty nice september we shot in montana and that can be a fickle month, and there can be a lot of bad weather, but we,, when we had rain, it was kind of useful for the story. so we were a little bit -- good karma when we shot it. >> so did you film this on your ranch? >> no

you know, but it was so darn close. it was almost -- it was a coincidence really, but it was -- because all the local people in montana said, oh, bill is such a big-time movie guy that he got to shoot on his ranch. [ laughter ] >> it was, you know, the director the writer director jared, really wanted -- he scouted. we were going shoot it in new mexico for like year but he scouted montana and really loved it and found that old ghost town called banism ck he wanted for part of the movie he was waiting to find a good ranch end said i found this great ranch it's in montana in a city near a town that starts with a w i can't remember i thought well wolf point that's four hours away. that would be really, and it was whitehall montana which is closest town to orange. >> that's something. >> i was 20 minutes away from the set. >> who
