in 20 years at nbc, there's reason to believe this was in the isolated. when i woke up and rolled over and grabbed the phone and you see that, wait, what? because -- it happened quickly. >> i had the same reaction. at 7:00, all of a sudden i starts seeing these alerts and started seeing text messages and tweets. my goodness, people were just shocked and surprised. yesterday. they got the word and boom, today gone. >> you get credit for being up front and transparent and nbc went into some details on that. ronica cleary starting us off with more on this really bombshell development. ronica? >> reporter: jim and shawn, i don't think i'll ever forget the feeling i had this morning when i looked at my phone because it was even more than the matt lauer news, it was one heck of a morning before 9:30, we're just talking about the lauer news, the piece in variety, that broke late this afternoon. detailing some of the allegation
6:32 pm
shocking details in that, of course, as i stressed before, these are still just allegations. but worth noting some of the highlights that he gifted a sex toy to a coworker, that he had a coworker in his office and exposed himself, that he even had a button on his desk that allowed him to lock his door while sitting down. certainly, causing a potential for a really uncomfortable environment for a female coworker. now, i have to tell you in the newsroom, of course, like news rooms across america, i can only imagine we talked about this today, and one of the comparisons we couldn't help but make or really think about is how differently these issues are handled in the private sector from what we've seen how they're handled on the hill and got us talking about examples like matt lauer charlie rose, mark hall pern. how they were swiftly fired. and then looking at the public sector, like here on the hill, which

on this show, with senator al franken, congressman conyers, how they're really given the opportunity and right to decide for themselves what will happen to them and at a minimum due process is really encouraged. at long and slow process, there's really a question if they will ever lose their job for the conduct. and so we took to the streets to get the pulse of the people and how differently these allegations of sexual misconduct are handled in the private sector versus capitol hill. take a listen. >> in the private sector they've got a lot of hr and other systems in place to make sure to that happens. i think that, forcing someone to resign from their elected seat is probably an even bigger deal than it's not just their personal job security but also, you know, the good qualities or bad qualities everything about

someone to resign from an elected position should probably >> they've made a commitment to serve a certain term. i think it's unfortunately it's a little more complicated. the private sector has more control. i'm not sure that all of the constituency would want him taken off. he's employed by the people. and i think that makes the whole situation more complicated. >> guys on the hill seem most of of the time employed by themselves their own boss. whereas in the private sector, 82 you will have, you know, higher ups that demand you have to get out of town, so either way, justice is usually served. >> reporter: there you have it. thoughtful comments on the difference between the two. i don't think i ever considere

allegations came to light and so many of us didn't know how secretive the process was on the hill and how you know, little seems to have been done, it does seem good that they're making some changes at a minimum. even though those people did bring light the differences in the complexity of lawmaker whose get embroiled in these controversies. back to you, jim and shawn. today we learned that radio personality garrison keillor was fired over allegations of improper behavior. his show ended lasted year and as minnesota radio confirmed keeller was fired after they received an allegation of inappropriate behavior. he still produces the syndicated show. the two journalists are the latest to be followed following allegations of sexual misconduct >> started in hollywood, spread to capitol hill. michael wilson is an attorney to hollywood life magazine be with us vi skype. i got to tell you

surprising, it's another domino to fall >>a skype. i got to tell you this was surprising, it's another domino to fall >> >> i said why did you go weeks ago you will see more fall. there's a couple reasons why. >> what are those reasons? >> well, mainly, with president trump himself, kind of em bolding people to come forward after the election campaign. mainly of what happened at fox, regarding ayes and o'reilly when people start to see the success of and the courage of these other women step forward and actually obtain settlements, then people become em boldened in it and say if that person can do it i can do it >> when you talk about women coming forward, i know there's many women despite watching what's happening, there's a lot of people scared two come forward for fear they won't be believed or have some sort of retribution against them. what is the right step for a woman out there who's thinking, i want to say
6:37 pm
not quite sure what to do? >> so i'm a whistle blower attorney, i started out against my former employer settled for 515 million with the doj in 2007. i was exposing fraud and harassed. these are things you can do, collect documents, e-mails, text messages, written documents, many will agree with me, stay away from human resources. and this is why, human resources is on behalf of the company. they want to protect the company. i would go out and hire legal counsel immediately. that way, you can be advised accurately how to proceed. a lot of times when you complain you yourself become the target and if it's a human resource jane dough and you have a john doe being accused of sexual harassment, it's highly unlikely jane dough will take your word against john doe >>

bieber has, you have to sign a nondemolish agreement. if take a cell phone picture or expose what happened you may be liable for $3 million fine to justin beiber. >> is there had a solution? how do we stop this? >> well, i don't know if can be -- sexual harassment can be stopped by implementing more laws, getting more involved in the company or the government. you know, and your last piece, focused on the difference between the private and government sector, president obama enacted under him, there was an end actmen of the dog act, which gave whistleblowers more protection, unfortunately some of those may be tripped by new administration, but i think some of the changes have to come with more people being courageous, to come forward, to have the sense of integrity, do not worry about the
