an anne arrundel is asking roy moore to refund a $1,000 donation. he says he waited to make the request by e-mail because he expected moore to drop out of the alabama senate race. civil rights icon john lewis says he will not be at this weekend's opening of the mississippi civil rights museum because president trump will be there. the georgia congressman was supposed to speak during the event but he said the president's hurtful policies are an insult. and breaking right now on capitol hill, the house has passed a temporary funding bill to avoid a government shut down this weekend. the measure passed 235 to 193. this

running through december 22nd. the plan is to buy more time including the budget a children's health program and federal aid to puerto rico. >> firefighters investigating a possible case of arson in montgomery county. crews responded to a townhouse fire on cedarwood drive in rockville just after 2 o'clock. one person was injured, two were displaced from the home. they have one person in custody. the fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damage. >> investigators resume their search for the remains of a d.c. woman who went missing several years ago. pamela butler vanished from her northwest d.c. home in february 2009. earlier this year her boyfriend, josé rodriguez cruz admitted to killing her. tomorrow a portion of the i-95 express lanes in stafford county will be closed at 10:00 a.m. while virginia state and d.c. police will search wooded areas along the interstate for butler's remains. more than 300 law enforcement agents and

takedown this week. 28 people were arrested for selling drugs while armed or other firearm related crimes. the bureau of alcohol tobacco and firearms and explosives and the fbi launched what's called operation panda in the spring. >> fox5's tisha lewis is live in northeast tonight with more on that story. tisha. >> reporter: well, jim and sarah, we're here at atf headquarters in northeast and they say that their investigation here centered on the blood gangs, gangs involved in violent crimes across northern virginia, also here in the district and also maryland. now, we are told that more than 71 firearms were recovered in this latest sting. >> the investigation lasted about seven months culminated yesterday with the takedown of more than 20 search warrants, multiple arrests across the northern virginia, the district, maryland and

elsewhere. we used a lot of investigative techniques in this case. we involved a lot of electronic media, surveillance, physical surveillance, enforcement operations like search warrants arrest warrants, physical searches. >> i think this investigation is a great example of how concerted effort can have a real impact on violent crime úin this community. >> reporter: operation tin panda resulted in the recovery of more than 4,000 grams of cocaine, 23,000 plus grams of marijuana and more than 2,000 grams of methamphetamine. now, we do know that of the 28 people arrested, 22 are facing federal charges and six of those 28 are facing state charges. this was a collaborative effort between local, state and federal law enforcement especially law enforcement in the northern virginia area. tisha lewis, fox5 local news. >> a former police officer

accusers. in the end, none of the it was enough to save his political career especially coming just days after veteran democratic lawmaker john conyers was forced to resign because he had sexually harassed a staff and settled a case up here on capitol hill. moving forward now, female lawmakers up here on capitol hill say this is a watershed moment today for the me, too, movement. virginia republican congresswoman barbara comstock saying she is getting more and more support for her effort to change the way sexual harassment is reported up here on capitol hill and d.c. delegate eleanor holmes norton says a new standard has been set in both democrats and republicans could expect similar treatment in the future. >> the democrats sometimes painfully have stepped forward conyers, longest serving member of congress and said he's got to

the democratic senators have said the same thing about al franken even though most of what he did was before he even became a senator. so, it seems to me a new standard has been set. >> i think the focus right now needs to be much more on what can we do to right things for the victims. if somebody here in congress left their job because they felt they were being sexually harassed how do we change that? how do we make sure that didn't happen in the future? >> reporter: now, we should tell you the time line on when al franken actually leaves, that's still a little bit iffy tonight. franken says he would resign in a couple of weeks but would not specify when. what we do know is the leading candidate to replace him right now appears to be minnesota lieutenant governor tina flint smith. she would serve until a special election next year and if she so chooses run in 2020. that is when al franken's original term was supposed to end. for now we're live on the

>> three major wildfires continue to spread across southern california tonight forcing thousands of people to evacuate. a key stretch of the 101 freeway was closed today as the wildfires churned towards coastal and mountain communities. 300 schools closed as well. 100,000 acres of land and hundreds of homes are scorched. high winds are still fueling the flames and today could be the worst yet. experts say winds could gust as high as 80 miles per hour, erasing any progress crews have made on contain, the fires. >> we are dealing with a number of flareups now that the wind has come back. that's the big story at this point. >> we don't have any electricity and we do have water but, you know, you're not supposed to drink it. >> authorities say there are shortages of food and water. most of ventura is under a boil advisory. one brave california man snastepped in to rescue a helpless wild rabbit. he did it wearing a hoodie and shorts. coming dangerously close to the flame

forecast. then i want to show you radar. at 7 o'clock we should be about 43 degrees. clouds will continue to hang out with us tonight. 9 o'clock, 42. and by 11 o'clock, mostly cloudy and 40. falling out of those clouds in a few areas a lot of snow. i was just checking some of the totals in buffalo and not the north side of town in buffalo but south side areas dunkirk, places like that they are getting hammered with lake effect snow. 2-inches per hour. i talked to my parents in erie earlier today. no snow on the ground. now they're expecting three to 6 inches in the next few hours and another six overnight. so, look at this. we've also got a little bit of disturbance bringing some snow in our direction. maybe you're seeing a few snowflakes up around berkeley springs or perhaps romney, cumberland area. keep an eye on all of that. and let me show you down to the south, another area we need to watch because it's snowing in parts of texas. this is an area of low pressure that now looks like it's going to be riding up the coast and has pushed

our models have pushed it a little bit westward so with this storm, we're thinking we have the possibility of seeing some snow around here. very late friday night and into saturday. we're talking snow showers. we're not talking anything that should be too problematic particular but maybe the first flakes for parts of the i-95 corridor and south and east. last stop tonight and i'll just show you that -- this is not our forecast but a lot of models are now saying there's enough to cover the grass, maybe even an inch or two well to the south and east. that would be by the time we get to the evening hours of saturday. so, maybe some snowflakes to keep an eye on and take your holiday picture with snow falling in the background. jim and sarah we'll have much more on this and the weekend timing coming up in just a few minutes. >> thank you, sue. got a commuter alert for you tonight if you use 270. the bridge that carries route 355 over the monocacy river is shut down for two months. matt ackland live around 270 right now with more. matt, this is going to be a mess. >> reporter: yeah,

for those of you who use 270 in the frederick county area, this is not good news at all. jim, as you were saying, that area near the bridge on 355, officials had no other choice. they had to close it down, so now all the folks are being detoured onto an already busy 270. let's take you to video. this is skyfox video of the -- over the scene. the problem happened when a tow truck was brought in to remove a trash truck. that's when part of the bridge apparently was damaged by the big tow truck. that forced authorities to close down the bridge, and now new beams will have to be made. they'll have to be put in place and have to be inspected. authorities say that they are going to move as quickly as they can but it could take about two months. now, the detour along 270 is from finger board road to buckeystown

to be closed down. folks are going to be rerouted onto 270. so, if you live in that area, if you travel to d.c. each day for work make note of that because once again officials are saying they're going to have to close that bridge down for about two months to make those needed safety repairs. for now, along 270, matt ackland fox5 local news. >> a judge sentenced former south carolina police officer michael slager to 20 years in prison for the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man. slager shot and killed walter scott as he was running from a traffic stop in north charleston in 2015. he pleaded guilty to violating scott's civil rights back in may. during tearful moments several members of scott's family say they forgive the officer and are praying for him. >> ♪ >> the u.s. ambassador to the un warning that north korea is "getting more dangerous." this comes as the country says a nuclear war has

>> ♪ >> this is fox5 local news at 5:00. >> senator al franken announcing his resignation one day after a number of his democratic colleagues called for him to step down. multiple women have accused franken of sexual misconduct before and after he was voted into the senate. those allegations began less than three weeks ago. in his resignation speech today franken did not set a specific date, only saying he will step down in the next couple of weeks. >> a judge sentenced the michigan sports doctor accused of molesting dozens of gymnasts to 60 years in prison. larry nasir last month admitted to molesting several gymnasts while working at michigan state university and u.s.a. gymnastics. he'll be sentenced for those climbs next month. >> two separate shootings the first on forrester street southwest. police say a man was shot in the chest around 11 o'clock last night. he died at the hospital. the second one happened

sixth street southeast across the streetcars heart middle school. police say a man and a woman were shot. their conditions unknown tonight. >> things are back to normal on route 50 in anne arrundel county for the evening commute after an overturned tractor-trailer caused a major backup today. the crash happened in the westbound lanes near annapolis just after 2:00 in the morning and that caused lane closures eastbound for awhile. crews had to clean up a diesel fuel spill from the crash. no one was hurt. >> if you take the 355 bridge over the monocacy river in frederick county you'll have to find another route for about two months. a garbage truck hit the bridge yesterday causing some significant damage. transportation officials say repairs to the bridge will take up to 60 days. drivers are being detoured from route 80 to northbound 270 from the south and route 85 to southbound 270 from the north. so, plan on a longer commute for the next several weeks. today in some northern virginia lawmakers are calling on the secretary of transportation to immediately force vdot to stop charging

>> yeah, these tolls really have been controversial. they started earlier this week and at some point prices climbed to more than $30 maybe even $40 during peak time at rush hour. fox5's anjali hemphill live along 66 with what happened today. i think a lot of people want to know is anything going to be done right now, anjali? >> reporter: well, jim, some lawmakers certainly are trying. we're here on i-66 right now heading westbound. again, the peak time of rush hour and we are moving at a good 55 miles per hour. hardly any traffic on the road here. the bad news is is drivers going the entire 9-mile stretch are going to be driving -- paying, excuse me, more than $13 in tolls to do that 9-mile stretch from d.c. to the beltway and as fox5 has been reporting all week long we've seen prices much higher than this at times and this now has up to 16 northern virginia lawmakers calling for these tolls to stop immediately, go back to the ol

had on i-66 during rush hour. they've even written a letter to the secretary of transportation to try and step in. take a listen to what some of these lawmakers said earlier today during a press conference. >> tolls are like four dollars. we wouldn't be standing here, okay. none of us knew that the tolls were going to be this high. nobody foresaw this happening. frankly this was an issue that we had resolved in 2016. we had a very specific deal with the governor that we were going to make improvements and once those improvements were made particularly inside the beltway we were going to go forward with the tolling and the fact this got out of sequence i think, you know what, maybe we should have known better but the bottom line is here we are. >> frankly i'm not sure i would be satisfied with any toll price. one of the points i want to make is people from my district and several of my colleagues behind me we have people already taking the dulles greenway which is paying a very exorbitant six-dollar each way for one exit and on top that of they're paying the dulles toll road. throw on the

beltway, these are like extra taxes jo just to get back and forth to work. some of the solutions are very good but we need the commuter lots, we need commuter buses. one of the poorest areas in northern virginia in my district in sterling there's no bus service to get to the metro so if we want people to take the metro we need to provide them bus service now not later. >> vdot implemented this new toll officially on monday where now single drivers are allowed on 66 during morning and afternoon noon rush hour but for a price. vdot says the toll prices go up and down based on how many people are using i-66 express lanes and that has kept traffic down and moving. vdot says up to 20 miles per hour faster in the last few days than compared to this same time last year. during peak times of rush hours drivers complained prices skyrocketed. on tuesday morning they were as high as $40 to

9-mile stretch of 66 from the beltway to rosslyn and that has really angered a lot of drivers in this area. however, we've also heard today that not everyone is against these tolls. we received a statement that i can read to you in part from the coalition for smarter growth who say the new tolls should stay "proposals to eliminate tolls and widen the entire highway are simply not viable. the cost would be in the hundreds of millions of dollars and because of the phenomenon of generated travel an expanded highway like this would fill up in record time and traffic would crawl again. while we're sympathetic to the sticker shock drivers and politicians are experiencing this week, the combination of tolling, hov, metro and new transit provides the most effective way to move the people in the most expeditiously as possible to and from work in the corridor. this comprehensive approach should stay in place "one more thing guys vdot also just put out their new numbers. they say travel times for the drivers along

several minutes this week. the average round trip toll price for the first four days was $14.50. in the morning drivers were paying a little over 10 bucks, in the afternoon almost four dollars which vdot says is lower than the estimated average toll rate of $17 which was originally discussed back in 2015 when these plans were brought forth. now, it is important to keep in mind, guys, that drivers who didn't go then tire stretch, that 9-mile stretch only maybe for an exit or two, were also factored into those numbers into that data that was released today by vdot. so, that's the latest here on i-66. i'll send it back to you guys in the studio. >> fbi director christopher wray headed to capitol hill defending his bureau four days after the president blasted it on twitter. this was weigh's first testimony before the house judiciary committee since taking over in august. president trump took to twitter on sunday tweeting its reputation is in tatters,

so, here's what the weekend looks so far. it does seem like that system that's going to ride along the coast late friday night into early saturday morning will back up a little bit throughout saturday morning and that will allow a period of maybe some snow showers to fall. not stick. it's way too warm. temperatures will be above freezing but it could be the first snowflakes that we see falling of the season during the day saturday. a second opportunity although a pretty low opportunity unless you're along the mountains for a few flurries on saturday night into sunday. they will just be passing. and then actually on sunday it looks pretty sunny so any flurries we have in the morning will quickly dissipate. it will be cold and breezy with temperatures in the 30's. let's show you fox futurecast. as we go into friday night, early saturday morning. here's 6:00 p.m. on friday. this is the european model. it gets that precipitation real close to 95 but it stops just short and this is just one solution but the further south and east you go of 95, extreme southern maryland over to the eastern shore the better chance friday night into saturday morning but this has been the big change today that during the day

so, let's bring you back to november 17th. now, according to the fbi who is now taken over the case, the 25-year-old was involved in a hit-and-run in alexandria. now, he allegedly led police on a chase that ended in fairfax county with a crash. it was then his family says he was not in the head three times by a u.s. park police officer while in his vehicle. authorities have not confirmed whether he was armed but his family says he was not. fairfax county provided backup in this incident and this week we learned that the incident was caught on camera on a dashcam are a from one of the units responding. that video though has not yet been released during this investigation. and again, his family say they're still trying to get answers from investigators not only with the police who responded the park police hoop responded but also with the fbi who has now taken this cover but the family describes their son as a bright passionate and peaceful
