director of the department of public works, right now, and he'll tell you why they're waiting until around midnight. >> whether we apply liquid, there is in some cases a fear that that liquid won't be as effective, because rain will sort of wash it away. in this particular case, given that we're going to have sort above freezing temperatures, for part of this event, rock salt will be effective. that's what we will start with, rock salt tonight. >> one thing i heard from the director today is that this storm, or whatever you want to call it, snowfall, is really coming at the right time. it is going to come right before a saturday morning. there is no rush hour to deal with tomorrow. so he said this is a perfect time for his crews to get out there. they won't have any traffic to deal with. and they can hopefully get that snow cleared away, just as soon as possible, and as, always, asking folks stay off the roads, if you can, let them do the work.

fires in southern california, tonight a half dozen fires continue to burn there. roads and schools are closed, buildings and homes up in flames. and thousands of people are under evacuation orders. the fires are burning to the east and south of san diego, and to the north and west of los angeles. fears santa ana winds and dry conditions are what's fueling these flames, as well. the thomas fire, in ventura county, is the most destructive. it has leveled more than 400 homes and buildings. president trump has declared an emergency, in california, that emergency declaration will allow the feds to provide help to local and state authorities. representatives from the federal emergency management agency will soon be on the grounds to coordinate relief efforts. firefighters still face an uphill battle, though. >> this fire was being fanned by santa ana winds, and people could not get out of their homes fast enough. >> the amount of vegetation, some of the areas still that have not burned makes this still a very threatening environment. >> more than 1,000

butler, he just met with the homicide detectives here, at the homicide division office here in southwest dc. he was told that pam's body is un recoverable. we spoke with derrick just few minutes ago, here's what he had to say. >> he told me that the kad iver dogs, one hit on several spots where pam was supposed to be. the other dog didn't alert to it at all. he believes that pam's there, but exactly where, they don't know. >> in your heart, you want to find pam, but in your mind you know what they're telling you is unrealistic. >> it is not realistic at all, yes, yes. i don't think we're going to find her. >> just after 10:00 this morning, along a stretch of i-95, near garrison ville road, two cadaver dogs appear to alert to area just off the northbound side of

highway. an area where there used to be official vehicle turn around, before construction gannon the express lanes. about dozen detectives and the two lead prosecutors in the case spent about two hours going over the area. at times they took photographs and used a shovel to move some of the dirt. there was no indication that any remains were recovered. a medical examiner's van never arrived on the scene. it is unclear if jose rodriguez cruz took investigators to the scene before the search. he was not there today. court order specifically says he's not to leave the district of columbia. pamela butler, and ron rid egg kless were diet wag they got into an argument in the base of their home. he admitted to killing her and taking the body out of a side of the house that was not being recorded by an elaborate security system that was installed on pam's house. now, jose roll regies cruz in that deal to turn over the body or at least say w

southern point there only the third time it has ever snowed since we've been keeping records. so this is powerful cold front sweeping through. it will be the first snow of the season, once the snow arrives here in washington. we are already seeing it in areas toward the south and east, storm tracker radar, bone dry from baltimore to about just north of fredericksburg, past the cut off line, it is snowing and it is snowing heavily across parts of the eastern shore including georgetown, delaware, down through saulsbury, cambridge, maryland, cross over into other parts of southern maryland, son st. mary county and even into virginia the northern neck including just south of fredericksburg. so where it is snowing, it is already snowing heavily. mixing, as you see this green, poking in right here around st. george island, will be an issue during the course of the event tonight and into tomorrow. so temperatures are marginal there. but that is still where we're expect to go see the highest snowfall accumulations because it is already snowing there, of course. temperatures 41 in washington, 41 in annapolis, still way above freezing for most of us. except for where it is snowing. that's a good thing about snow, once

temperatures can drop pretty quickly and create environment favorable for the snow to pile up. thirty-two leonardtown, 32 cambridge. i want to stress for tonight, in the dc metro, no snow expected, so if you are headed out on your friday night, it is cloudy and chill which temperatures in the 30's. but not going to have any travel issues. really the snow doesn't want to get into washington or the i95 corridor until overnight tonight. here's midnight. that rain-snow line or i guess just snow line has barely moved northward. it will take good shove off toward the north and west, but not until about 2:00, 3:00 a.m. tomorrow morning wake up, thankfully it is saturday it will be snowing outside and it will continue to snow through the afternoon hours, before quickly falling partly in the afternoon and then maybe just some flurries for good measure tomorrow night. so we will continue to show you these snowfall amounts. two to 4 inches of wet, slushy snow along 95, mainly on grassy surfaces in the secondary roads. those are higher apartments, four to six, localized that could even see maybe some part of saint mary county up to 8 inches, dust to go 2 inches along

>> big story tonight, winter weather, winter weather warnings, advisories, in effect for the dc region and in a few hours we'll see snow in d.c. and the surrounding areas. how much are we going to get? >> good question. caitlin is here with an update on that. >> the most important question, jim, sarah. thank you, snow will not begin until late tonight here in d.c. then through the day on saturday. will accumulate few slushy inches for the metro, more south and east where winter storm warnings are in effect, in fact, from literally border to border, texas to maine, first snow has either happened or going to happen within the next 24 hours, so getting it all along the eastern seaboard. and those winter storm warnings include southern maryland, charles, calvert, saint mary's count my the northern neck and eastern shore, where you will see the highest amounts, that's a winter weather advisory along 95 and some areas north and west. there is some wet heavy snow falling across parts of southern maryland, already, so st. mary county, leonardtown, toward colon

he echoed the same sentiment in a article in the catholic herald newspaper. all of this happened on the heals of the racial unrest in charlottesville. >> that was dis disingenuous, it was phony, and we believe it was a conspiracy on the part of the catholic church. as a result of that, we believe that the butlers suffered definately emotional distress in light of the fact that this matter was brought back up. >> now, as the butlers attorney ted williams there. meantime the diocese of arlington posted a response on their website saying in part, father acknowledges that he should have reached out to the butler family, and paid restitution decades ago, but he hopes this resolution begins a process of healing, and peace. as this matter involving the butler family, and father, has only been resolved recently plans for his future priestly ministry are

tomorrow, that will be a daily record for december 9th. it is already snowing in part of southern maryland, the northern neck, and the eastern shore. snow moves toward 95, overnight, accumulations look to be slushy two-four, for the metro, four-six south and east, locally more is possible. and then snow will come to an end mid-afternoon tomorrow, with just few flurries, tomorrow night. winter storm warnings, showing this extreme southern maryland, that's calvert county, charles county, st. mary county sneaking back down through central virginia toward richmond, then northeast toward dover, delaware, atlantic city, new jersey, winter weather advisory along 95 much of the dc mesereau, extends back out toward montgomery, frederick county, lowden county, virginia, folk ear county as well where they'll have little less snow. already snowing. areas toward our south and east, zooming in, that dark purple indicates some snow that may be mixing with some raindrops in there. but we've had numerous reports from the northern neck up through southern maryland that the snow is sticking and it will continue to snow there overnight. but it is going to take a while for all of the snow to move

here's the whole system which stretches basically from the mid-atlantic down through the southeast, atlanta, saw snowfall earlier today, so many parts of the southeast that never get it including new orleans, saw snowfall early today. pretty shocking. this is really an all eastern half of the country event. forty-one in d.c. right now, 36 dullos, 38 baltimore, well above freezing, 32 in leonardtown, where it is snowing already, so we expect those temperatures to fall, as we go into the overnight, at least closer to freezing. right now, snow far south and east it, will remain that way, and it is dry in the metro, for your friday night. it is not really until the overnight hours, here's 3:00 a.m., that we start to see the northwest ward movement with the snow. but then at some point, maybe when you wake up tomorrow morning, it will be snowing just about everywhere. notice, that mixing, far to the south and east, which will cut down on ankle lakes cents for any coastal areas, delaware, maryland and virginia. snow continues through the mid afternoon and then it will come to an end there, about 6:00 p.m. and you see just some flurries, which will actually be along arctic front coming through, later on tomorrow

so, two-four for the metro, four to six plus south and east, mick willing occur further and east that far, dust to go inch or two in the grassy areas, that's for the 81 corridor far off toward our north and west, seven day forecast, call it snow day for tomorrow. 36 degrees, with continual snow showers. accumulating few inches. breezy, cold, sunday. it is clear. we do see some sunshine, but it gets very chilly, and then that cold air is reinforced by tuesday, into wednesday, look at the high temperature wednesday, only 32 degrees, and we could be seeing some mixed rain and snow showers before that, as well. it does remain very cold. as we head into next week. so winter is here, and it does look like it is here to stay through the seven day forecast. >> all right, that's a look at your forecast, sarah, back over to you. >> excited for little bit of snow. thanks, caitlin. it is friday and that means another addition of firehouse friday. and today we head over to arlington to station two. fox5's erin como introduces us and shares their tips for a safe holiday season. >> for this editi

in arlington celebrating station number two, in addition to thanking them for all of their hard work and dedication to the community we also have holiday safety tips for you. so i want to move over to firefighter, tell me little bit about light safety this holiday season. >> we just want to remind everyone it please inspect their wires. you want to make sure there is no damage, fraying, any wires showing, especially the ones you'll be using indoor on the tree. also, another reminder, is we like to recommend using battery operated candles. prevent the risk of anything happening with a live lit candle. >> you also don't want to overload your outlet, right? >> correct. just usually one plug, or use extension cord, surge protector, anything like that to stay from overloading one particular out lit. >> those are really good tips. firefighter tell me what you are holding in your hand? >> when purchasing your lights at the store, be sure to choose brands tested by national laboratory, just to make sure they're safe to use in your home. >> awesome. something to use in your

firefighter, you have a lot to tell us keep your kids safe this holiday sees ton. >> yes, with kids, make sure to keep decorations out of their way, that may be are appealing to them, maybe small, can pose any sort of a choking hazard. you also want to keep up garland, and keep string light away from them as they pose a strangulation risk as well as breakable, fragile, or edible ornament on the tree. you want to keep that up, keep it age appropriate, out of the way. >> awesome tips for keeping your tree safe. captain b bennett, tell us more about tree safety itself. >> if you have live tree, make sure to keep it watered. because of the fact is that a dry tree will burn fast, as opposed to well hydrated tree. takes a lot longer to burn. if you do have lights on your tree, make sure you shut them offer whenever go to bed at nighttime as well as if you leave the residence. >> really good tips. we want to remember to keep that tree hydrate the. we head over to firefighter blount. space heater safety, it is getting cold outside. tell us a lit

that. >> so space heaters, definately nice to have during the cold weather. but they can be very dangerous, as they can fall down sometimes. so never put them on table, as they can get knock off by kids or animals. and also, remember, 3-foot rule. always keep them 3 feet away from anything combustible, it means drapes, bedding, so far as, anything like that, as they can catch fire. >> those are great tips. i want to head outside with firefighter burger, tell us about extension cord safety. >> so, it is super tempting to just take your indoor extension cord and take it right on outside and plug your light in. what we would recommend is that indoor-outdoor extension cord and your in door outdoor light. indoor lights are not appropriate for any kinds of weather. so any kind of moisture gets in, there you have a little bit of an electrical hazard. so make sure it is an indoor outdoor light. make sure your extension cord is indoor outdoor load and make sure not to overload the circumstance. >> i the entire team out here at station two, thank you for having us out today. we wish awe happy holidays. we

something wet is happening, there is some snow on the ground, and it has been coming down for couple of hours now. >> live team coverage this evening, fox5's matt ackland live with how crews are preparing. but we begin with caitlin roth and a first look at the forecast, caitlin, any changes? >> tony, and lauren, no. we are pretty much rocking and rolling with the forecast, as we go into tonight. you know, we saw through today the need to up some amounts south and east of town where it is already snowing, namely st. mary county, part of calvert county even southern charles county, already snowing there, and it will snow there the longest, through tonight, into tomorrow. we're waiting on this snow here in d.c. actually going to ache a while. but storm tracker radar showing those light purple, light flurries down toward fredericksburg, but heavier snow, further south and east, i've heard report of it snowing anywhere from the northern neck all the way to bethany beach. so, as you zoom in, you see some snow, but also see some rain mixing in. and that will be the case. some mixing, may be an issue at least initially, for some areas toward our south and east. but it is 32 gr
