♪ ♪ there was a an alabama bombshell, doug jones won the special election to fill the senate seat vacated by jeff sessions and his republican challenger roy moore is refusing to concede >> president trump weighing in on the race. this is the hottest story tonight at 6:30. let's get to it >> i think this election shows people across the country, want to see people work together. i think that's a message for democrats and it's a message for republicans and independents. when the people of alabama elect a senator who runs on platform of trying to find common ground
6:31 pm
think that's a message that both political parties should take heed. he took no times changing the sign on bottom to senator elect. sending a a democratic for the first time in more than two decades, he beated out roy moore by about 1.5%. a lot of people are asking why. there's take aways, first off, bannon's branding, he campaigned for moore over the past few week, bannon is known for the all the right views and channelling the a president's appeal and also black voters were a key. despite chatter about them being unenthusiastic, black voters especially women were there as a blockbuster turn-out >> and the president were political capitol on the line. soccer moms get a goal. the other major primary reason for jones' win was the strong rejection of moore among white suburban college educated conservatives and

a message in which they're coming for the president. let's bring in our panel tonight. karen maria alston ceoo spectrum circle. garry nor linger at georgia washington university and gregory angelo president of the log cabin republicans >> >> karen as a ceo of an organization that connects women through professional and personal experiences and also someone who has spoken out as part of the me too movement, what does this win for the democrats in alabama say about this movement >> this is a wonderful time in our history and this is a tipping point. women of alabama spoke up last night. and collectively said us too, we're not standing for this, this was a great opportunity for women to show political power and i hope both parties are paying attention. because this is a precipe for something else to

future, there's opportunity to win in states that people have not put money in and thought they couldn't win it. i'm excited about what happened last night >> let's be realistic. had this been any other republican, the republicans would have won this race, that's how most political observers look. moving forward was there a lesson for the republican party out of this. >> i can speak as the president of log cabin republicans an organization representing lgbt conservatives and you had in roy moore someone who actually made a career demonizing the lgbt community. long before accusations surfaced in the "washington post." before the ten commandments, built his career on do i mondaynizing members of the lgbt community. you can't be an anti-lgbt, even republican tribalism has its
6:34 pm
embarrassed to vote for roy moore because of the way he demonized members of the lgbt community >> was this a rejection of president trump? >> you know, i think the whole concept of presidents putting their capitol on line is exaggerated. i don't think it was any kind of a reputation of president trump in alabama. he still has pretty good favorable ratings in alabama. but you know, it's not good news for the republicans. he had a, you know, a tough margin in the senate. and they've lost a seat and then it's not good news going into the 2018 elections >> what do you think? will we see challenges >> yes. you're already seeing people lining up to run. democratic be campaign schools that are being put on, you know, people out the door in line. 538 blog put up a post about two hours ago analyzed the 70 special elections taken place for state legislature and congress. democrats are overperforming in 75% of
6:35 pm
>> when you look at -- you had a point there. go for it >> we should also look at the african-american vote last night. we always use the obama election, the 2008 and 2012 elections as points of you can't beat that. you can't get past that number of the last night, we had 17% of african-american women of legible african-american women come out and vote in a special election for one candidate and their numbers were 98%. that in and of itself should send, it's a time bomb to both parties that outreach to the african-american community is critical >> let me ask you. it was when you saw at breakdown of the black vote yesterday. 98% of women, 93% of men unheard of in alabama. moving forward, what do you think needs to happen? what should the republican party do i? what should the democratic party be doing
6:36 pm
statistics, 30% of the eligible election both have an opportunity to go out and do outreach if you can start as a candidate in an election and know you're going to get 98 and 93% of the african-american vote. that takes you to 35% in the general election. so it's a great opportunity and that -- that demographic is going to increase, it's not decreasing, more people are moving to alabama and having children, so in ten years, the african-american population may be closer to 40% in alabama. so those numbers are starting, need to tell both parties they need to do more outreach to both communities. >> i'll give you the last word. i'm thinking about 2004. carl row thought that putting anti-same sex marriage amendments on state ballots would be a wedge issue for president bush but you see now dick cheyne should in favor. it's the law of the land now. donald trump >> donald trump
6:37 pm
>> after the oval office. >> saying it's the law of the land. so you know, it's amazing you can't use the lgbt community in order to drive up -- and lgbt ames in order to drive people to the polls in the time since the 2004 election, you seen a total flip in that regard. and democrats have been capitalizing on that. there's also there's a into question in you run as a mini trump you'll get elected if you're big and bombastic and loud that's what the republican voters want. i think we saw that's not the case >> people don't want extremism. they want results. we'll see where that goes from here >> i suspect we'll continue talking about these issues. >> we're done. >> you guys get to come back another time and join us, thank you guys for coming in

report are the names of the people who have been accused. now, we spoke to maryland governor larry hogan. understand, governor's office and the general assembly are two different separate branchs of government. the governor said he was surprised to find out that this kind of information wasn't being collected in the first place and he also added that in his opinion, he thinks the legislature in annapolis should follow the same kind of transparency and openness that the governor's office does. >> i agree with that. i just heard, you know, in the media that they were proposing a policy. i haven't seen any wording of the proposed policy. but it absolutely if they're doing one, it certainly should be open and transparent as the executive branch policy is >> the governor said much of what he's learned about this so far has been through media reports. he has yet to see exactly what this policy is going to object in the general assembly. we spoke to some

one of them dc attorney deb katz. she's dealt with these kinds of issues for years and has been closely monitor, the situation not only on capitol hill but in governments in general. she said this idea, to prepare this report in 2017 in the midst of this me too movement to her sounds tone deaf. >> the public wants to know who is engaging this behavior, and if settlements are reached, that are coming out of the public fist, how much is being paid and as a result of what kind of conduct? and it is a bit tone deaf. right now we're in a moment where the public is rightly dema demanding accountability and transparencyj those are the two places this is coming together, the accountability the, the fact that tax dollars would be used to fund any of these settlements and the accountability in that tax dollars should be

likely going to stick a whole lot easier than they did saturday when ground temperatures are so warm. let me show you what we're talking about. i see the first flakes trying to push in a loudoun county and across frederick in maryland and you can see we have a little bit more starting to blossom on the eastern shore. where you have the brighter purples that's more of a steady snow. here's what we're tracking is a clipper system. they move quickly. this will mostly pass to the north but we're getting grazed by the tail end of it and as that clipper moves through, it's possible there could be slick spots where surfaces have not been treated because it is so cold, maybe one to three inches in the mountains, but be careful as the snow showers move through they're gone by morning because the about of the cold you could have slick spots chug your front step or sidewalk or driveway. we'll keep a close eye on this and have more a little bit later. did you hear about this one? a
