suspect on tuesday afternoon came here, we're told he hit somebody here and then went to this area where he had some kind of mace and then sprayed everyone. i want you to listen to ruby talk about this incident. she's the founder here of casa ruby. >> people do know about casa ruby. people know that casa ruby is a place where people come to get support and help. if they wanted to just hurt someone, they will do it outside if they had an individual -- you know, if they had a -- if they had a thing with a client they would have done that outside so what concerns me is that there is a pattern of people wanting to terrorize people that are already vulnerable. >> reporter: as you can imagine a lot of people are concerned about this most recent attack. we did check in with d.c. police today. they are still in the process of putting together a full report on this but they do have reason to believe that this could

this. what is neutrality. well, basically what it means is this rule as it currently stands means that internet companies can't speed up web sites that they agree with or like, likewise they also can't slow down any web sites or apps like netflix or facebook that they don't make any extra money off of. this was a party line vote three to two and in the end net neutrality was neutralized. >> it is not the job of the government to be in the business of picking winners and losers in the internet economy. we should have a level playing field and let consumers decide. >> this decision puts the federal communications commission on the wrong side of history, the wrong side of the law and the wrong side of the american public. >> reporter: now, there was a bit of dramatic in the middle of all this today as the fcc commissioners were about to have this vote, the room was

because of an undetermined threat. we waited out that recess in the hallway. eventually they allowed everybody back into the room. now, 5fcc commissioners voted on this. three were republicans, they supported the end of net neutrality, two were democrats. they wanted to keep the rule in place. in the end, the republicans won on this one. now, outside the building, protesters gathered. they say they are very concerned tonight about what they see as now government giving up its lifeguard duty on the internet and allowing internet provider companies to do whatever they want. >> we have no reason to trust them. they have the private companies' interests in mind. >> i feel like this is incredibly undemocratic. >> everything is at stake for the whole world, the whole internet community. >> reporter: late tonight the attorney

t-maryland and virginia announced they will join in an 18 state federal lleyton night to block the fcc from ending net neutrality. we're live in southwest tonight, tom fitzgerald fox5 local news. >> and a busy day for the fcc. the commission technological added a new alert to the nation's emergency notification system. it is called the blue alert and it will notify the public when there is either a credible threat to a member of law enforcement or an officer has been seriously hurt or killed. it will take 12 to 18 months to be implemented by the emergency alert system. just like other major alerts it will not only go out to broadcasting cable networks but also to your smartphone. >> ♪ >> all right, once again, we're talking about how cold it is outside but then again its december. we expect this sort of thing. live look outside as the sun starts to go down. >> not just cold but cold as ice. >> cold as ice, that's right. i feel like we're casey kasem counting down the hits and

here's sue palka. >> yet another imitation jim can do. cold as ice is totally appropriate for today. we had morning high temperatures around 9, 10 o'clock when we were in the 40's. we've seen it dropping ever since and we're down to 37 degrees as you see a mix of clouds and sun out there. it's only 31 in gaithersburg, frederick 34, hagerstown down to 29 degrees. winchester 32 so obviously it's going to be a cold night. something that has improved, though, are those big wind gusts that we had earlier today. it was sustained winds are now much better and very few people are getting gusts over 20 miles an hour but the winds are still out of the northwest. that's a cold direction for us. as they continue to get lighter as we go through the evening it means we'll be getting colder. just a check of wind chills because as you saw with our temperatures mostly 30's but wind chills are widespread in the 20's. hagerstown feels like 21, cumberland 21, winchester 25, d.c. feels like 30 so if you're heading out tonight while the wind won't be huge it will be a night

coat handy the scarves, the gloves will come in handy as well and so the cold air also is locked in for friday. expect another day in which we probably only top out in the 30's. why do we have some snowflakes there. very quickly i'll show you this. we have another storm system to keep an eye on. this is mostly going to be off shore but it could be close enough to throw some snow showers in our direction tomorrow afternoon. some evening slicks spots mainly east of 95 and yes, another coating to an inch for a few spots. i think from d.c. on west, we see maybe a few flurries on our friday afternoon and evening. so, we'll go through the timing with that. and show you what the futurecast is showing as well and we'll look ahead to the weekend coming up a little bit later. jim. >> funeral services today for the two off duty officers in friday's crash along 270. family and friends were at a synagogue on montrose road in rockville to remember deputy chief state fire marshal sander cohen. troops were along woodfield road in gaithsb

private funeral service of veteran special agent carlos wolff of the the investigation into that crash is still ongoing. >> ♪ >> a d.c. massage therapist pleaded guilty today to sexually assaulting three female clients. 24-year-old habtamu gebreslassi is charged with first degree sexual abuse and second degree assault. he's accused of inappropriately touching three women, two at massage envy in tenleytown and one at deluca massage and body work in northwest. gebreslassie is scheduled to be sentenced in february. he who could face up to five years in prison and be required to register as a sex offender. >> a hearing is set for a maryland woman facing voyeurism charges at a d.c. charter school for students with special needs. 23-year-old krisha garris allegedly used a cell phone to record a 13-year-old girl as she got undressed in a bathroom. she then posted the video on snapchat. the whole thing happened back on december 1st at saint collette tap special education

garris worked at the school and finally turned herself in to police yesterday. saint coletta issued a statement that said garris was terminated and they're fully cooperating with the investigation. >> meantime a woman from prince george's county will spend six years in prison for her role in the murder of her infant son. a judge sentenced geneice petty. she pleaded guilty for the death of her two month old son. her husband antoine was sentenced to 40 years in jail. >> new details on a deadly double shooting in silver spring. were we are learning about the victims tonight. >> plus a local hospital shuts down an entire wing. kristyn leon breaking this down for us tonight. >> reporter: jim and sarah, that's right the ob unit like you mentioned officially shut down at umc. some city leaders are surprised. others not so much. we'll explain both sides of the issue coming

fire broke out at a three story apartment building in lanham this morning. this is in the 5600 block of whitfield chapel road. the flames swept through the second and third floors putting 14 people out of their homes. one person suffered minor injuries. >> police in montgomery county confirm the two deaths in silver spring yesterday were apparently the result of a murder-suicide. officers found a man and woman shot to death yesterday in an apartment building on fenwick lane. the victim 88-year-old rose dyer. police say her son garvey dyer shot her and then turned the gun on himself. fox5 reported in august the obstetrics unit as umc you. >> suspended. >> it has officially shut down. fox5's kristyn leon is live with the details. >> reporter: the umc board decided not

restricted license for the ob unit which means in this case that those patients or those expectant mothers east of the anacostia river will now have to seek prenatal care elsewhere in this case. now, for those city leaders as i mentioned before this comes as a surprise but for board members that say this decision was definitely expected. those on the board claim that many mothers already were choosing to go to other hospitals or other facilities because they have heard of umc's reputation now. not to mention besides the lower patient volumes here, board members recognize they didn't have the staff to provide the quality of care for their patients already. now, these were some of the factors that influenced their decision here. again, to officially shut the unit down t however, some city leaders though, like ward seven council member vince gray, say this was supposed to be an opportunity to rebuild the ward here with a new operator and model

prenatal care so as you're about to see here, he's extremely disappointed with the board's executive decision. >> this just simply adds to people feeling like they're not -- they're not treated with the respect that they should be treated with, that there's not a commitment to having equitable healthcare on the east end of the city and it leaves people with a feeling that they're not cared about. >> we've not been the best provider of quality care for -- for people and that's why i'm -- that's one of the main focuses of me is changing that dynamic making sure that we do what we can to build the trust of the people that we're providing services. >> reporter: now, bottom line the board says it will cost them millions of dollars to have a quality ob unit in the future. they're not saying that they won't have an ob unit but for now, it is a at a standstill. it's officially shut down. the staff members that were at that unit they were ppa

doesn't come as a surprise to them according to board members. for now we are live at um this evening, kristyn leon, fox5 local news. >> ♪ >> we have new information on the case of several bold burglaries police believe are connected in d.c. >> it appears the same suspects may be to blame for two additional cases in prince george's county. fox5's lauren demarco live at prince george's county police headquarters with more of the details. lauren. >> reporter: hey, there, jim, sue. this is a situation where we had five very bold, very brazen burglaries in d.c. and we have just learned today that there were two additional cases here in prince george's county just now getting the details from police. take a look at your screen. i'll want to show you the photos from surveillance video of one of the burglaries near prince george's county county. it happened on central avenue in seat pleasant just this past tuesday, december 12th. this was at a cell phone store. it happened around 11:45 a.m. two emplo

these masked men went in. they implied having a weapon. they demanded cash, also made off with cell phones and these same suspects targeted another cell phone store along silver hill road in district heights on december 3rd. that also in the middle of the day, a similar situation, although they did actually show a gun in that case. no one was hurt in these burglaries but two suspects did rob the stores while a third suspect waited outside in a getaway vehicle. that's what we've learned so far here in prince george's county. now, let's look at the other video from d.c. we have five different clips of surveillance images that we're going to go through with the dates on the screen there. there were two stores robbed along f street northwest, benson's jewelers and verizon wireless. then there were also two other cell phone stores robbed, benning road northeast, pennsylvania avenue southeast and then a clothing store on h street northwest. in that

men and they went into a van that actually had been stolen from a church in southeast. that van was later recovered. still no sign of these suspects. these are happening all different times of the day as you hear different areas around the city and now also in prince george's county and different mo's in each situation, different types of stores robbed but police believe this is all the same guys. sometimes they wear masks, other times they don't. if you have any information about any of this, they really want to hear from you. we're now talking about seven robberies, seven burglaries and police really want to get these guys. so, that's the latest here in prince george's county, we're going to talk with police and have an update for you tonight at 6: >> there's a new psa trying to highlight the importance of warning signs. >> plus is it the end of the road for house speaker paul ryan. why his political career may soon be over. >> and later days after the

2018 midterm elections. according to politico ryan has told people that his current term as speaker will be his last. as usually happens in washington ryan has publically denied the report. he first entered congress in 1999 and was elected speaker in 2015. meanwhile a virginia lawmaker is renewing a push to get rid of a law he says out of date. >> this is how out of the date it is. it makes swearing in public a crime. it is called the virginia code. it makes it a misdemeanor to "profanely swear or curse in public" and it could result in a $250 fine. >> i'm going to be owing a lot of money. >> yes, will you. >> michael weber has introduced a bill that would decriminalize cursing. he's made two similar attempts to decriminalize in the past. both time the bill stalled in the virginia general assembly. why can't people get on board with that many. >> shut the front door. one of several teens that attended a house party in this bethesda neighborhood at this home and now we're talking about this. police tell us that this investigation is ongoing. they also tell us some new information, 93 say that they did speak with an adult female resident inside the home. they say she was very cooperative with police and police insist that she was not intoxicated. in fact, they say that she welcomed police into the home, took police around the home, took police outside the home, in fact behind the home we're told is where this party took place and they say that the woman who lives here was very, very cooperative with investigators. now at some point on saturday night, the police were called. they even spoke to navid before letting him walk home, although ultimately he never made it home. the walt whitman high school senior was reported missing sunday after he did not return home saturday night. his body was discovered in a

afternoon. montgomery county police say an autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death, though they don't suspect any foul play. now, again, the house party took place on the 6500 block of elgin lane here in bethesda. >> i'd say a lot of people were under the influence. i don't know if any one person should be held responsible. but i do think as a collective people do feel at fault because it could have been better, you know, they could have been there and there are steps to prevent. >> it's really horrible and i hope that it doesn't happen again and people learn. >> reporter: now, i did speak on the telephone with navid sepehri's father who says that there is body camera footage of police speaking with his son when they were called to this neighborhood for this house party. he says that the family would like to look at that body camera footage. they have requested the body camera footage but he also says that it is unlikely th

metro started offering free wifi earlier this year. the new stations where you can stay connected include dupont circle tenleytown farragut west rosslyn anacostia and bethesda. metro says they hope to have all wifi stations up and running at each station by the middle of the year. >> from the rails to the roads. a record number of americans are expected to hit the roads this holiday season. aaa predicts 107 million people will travel between now and the end of the year. that's a third of the u.s. population. here in the d.c. area more than two and a half million people are expected to travel. most expected to drive. it is the highest year end travel volume ever predicted by aaa. doesn't it just every year they say it's a record travel year. >> it's like the stock market. every day it closes and a new high is a new record. >> seems like yeah. >> you can now get around town with extra holiday cheer thanks to lyft. the ride sharing app is offering merry mode. request

least the beginning of the evening commute for friday so these very sneaky and very fast little systems that are not big storm systems but can still deliver impacts with just a little bit of snow. we'll see another one tomorrow. very cold for tonight, though. temperatures fall back into the 20's and maybe even the teens in some spots. we've got a couple of those snow showers mainly in the afternoon and evening hours tomorrow. the weekend, though, looks nice. we take a break from this bitter cold, get some sunshine in the forecast and then into next week big pattern change. we say goodbye to this trough of cold air and with some ridging building in we'll get temperatures well above normal. we're still approaching the first day of winter the winter solstice december 21st next week. daylight still increasing down to nine hours 27 minutes for tomorrow with our sunrise sunrie sunset for tomorrow at 4:46 p.m. so we keep going but then after the solstice we'll start to gain some of that daylight back. outside right now 37 d.c., 34 baltimore, 36 in annapolis it's 34 in frederick already below freezing along the mo

real cold north and west. 12 in binghamton, yikes. 23 in pittsburgh. 22 in detroit so that's more cold air on the move which will guarantee us a chillier morning tomorrow and also a colder high temperature in the afternoon. pretty quiet though aside from a few snow showers down wind of lake erie but some of the snow showers will reach us from a different system that is kind of moving offshore and trying to get organized but as it moves offshore it's just a little bit of that phasing that could clip us and bring us a couple snow showers before it moves out of our area. so, afternoon snow showers. otherwise partly sunny skies and very cold for your friday. high temperatures mainly only in the mid 30's. here's what futurecast looks like. as we get into tomorrow morning we'll probably start off mostly cloudy but we'll somewhere some breaks of sunshine its a dry start to your friday. no snow for the morning commute. watch this little area though just blossom right along 95 by noon so by the lunch hour we could have a few snow showers. then it will really favor areas 95 and points east. yo

couple hours later 3, 4 o'clock those snow showers have long gone from 95. sunshine breaks out but we have snow that will cross the bay and quickly move offshore. you could even have higher accumulations along the coast because it will be very cold and the snow will stick so we're just saying about a coating to maybe an inch from 95 and points eastward. i know sue kind of showed that you snowfall map in the beginning of the newscast. she'll keep showing it through the rest of the evening. back to the temperatures. 26 for that low temperature here in d.c. very cold for tomorrow. that's why again we have a concern with just a little bit of light accumulation can still cause slick spots. flurries flying in the afternoon, 37 here in d.c. cold end to the work week. here's the weekend. it looks a little better. sunny skies, 46 on saturday. 49 with increasing clouds sunday. there could be a spotty shower monday as we turn milder and that is much milder with temperatures 20 degrees warmer monday in contrast to tomorrow. chance of showers on tuesday looking kind of likely. this monday tuesday time frame has been flipping and flopping but we're goi

announced that spielberg was going to direct this movie starring tom hanks and meryl streep. on may 25th of this year, they visited the washington post at an editorial meeting to kind of scope out what was going on in the news room and then on may 30th, they started shooting the film in new york city which is crazy and now it's being released on december 22nd. the time line for this is absolutely incredible and this story really is very timely and the cast is huge and i cannot wait to see the cast here tonight. tom hanks as i mentioned will be here. i'll be interviewing the entire cast and those interviews will be available tomorrow morning on fox5 news morning and i had spoken to spielberg recently in new york city about filming this movie. it was an incredible interview. if you go to fox5dc.com you can find the interview there but this film tonight i've seen a lot of reporters here, again this is the world premiere, variety is here, the washington post is obviously here, access hollywood, extra, but also fox5. that's the most important thing, we're here tonight live and we're

>> ♪ >> fairfax county health officials are warning that the flu activity is widespread right now so if you have not received a flu shot it's not too late. the best way of course to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated but also washing your hands off with soap and water covering your nose and mouth when you sneeze and if you're sick of course stay home for at least 24 hours is the recommendation. a recent spike in overdose deaths nearby has the city of alexandria on alert. city officials are warning about a deadly strain of heroin. six people died from overdoses in fairfax county during the first week of december. five of those deaths are believed to be caused by a batch of heroin laced with fentanyl. residents can receive free narcan, the drug that can reverse an overdose at the alexandria health department. >> caught on camera in maryland a crash sends a pickup truck through part of a building. this happened in the 1000 block of eagle wood road in annapolis. the annapolis fire department says the driver was able to get himself out. a second patient had to be rescued by first responders from the wreckage. they were taken t

>> ♪ >> this is fox5 fox5 local newst 6:00. >> developing tonight new information about a string of robberies across the district that police believe are connected. >> and tonight investigators say those same suspects may be responsible for two additional cases in prince george's county. fox5's lauren demarco joins us live from prince george's county police headquarters with the very latest. lauren. >> reporter: yeah, well, there are definitely these very bold situations, bold robbers. they are pulling off these crimes in the district and now also here in prince george's county in two different locations, all throughout the month of december. so, take a look at the latest images we've just received from prince george's county police. these were from a robbery that took place on central avenue in seat pleasant this past tuesday. there were two suspects who entered the store, some employees were inside at the time. they made off with cash and also with cell phones. the same suspects are

phone store silver hill road in district heights. that was on december 3rd. i just spoke with corporal harry bond about what exactly they're looking at here. >> both instances two suspects will enter the store. a third suspect will stay outside in the get away vehicle. a weapon was implied in one and a weapon was actually shown in the other. we're doing everything we can to get these individuals off the streets. we do believe that they are linked to what's going on in the district of columbia. >> reporter: and we have some surveillance video from five separate scenes in d.c., one along f street at benson jewelers. there was also a robbery at the verizon wireless store. then benning road in northeast, a cell phone store hit there. pennsylvania avenue in southeast, another cell phone store hit and then h street northwest on december 5th, there were three suspects who were driving a church
