. > . the senate proving it can compete with the president when it comes to reality show style drama and just like rowdy resignations from former white house aid more rose. >> this is what we're talk on 5@630. omarosa dominating headlines she said she's setting the record straight. and the gop is still reeling from the stinging loss in alabama >> let's bring in the panel, republican strategist, kimberly
6:31 pm
clakik, and atema omara >> could be the first real legislative win for the republicans this tax bill >> absolutely. i think this tax bill is going to make it through. we just heard today that marco rubio is behind it now that the child tax credit is up to his standards. they moved it from 1100 to 1400, and he's voting yes, i believe senator bob corker said this afternoon he will vote yes as well >> atema >> it will certainly be a legislative win for trump and the gop but this is not popular even with folks in their own party, you got a lot of economists, and right leaning comic organizations saying this will not be able to generate sort of the growth that you think it will, which might be why they're currently thinking of -- they've been keeping it hush hush and a lot of the details and
6:32 pm
details as late as tonight >> >> why haven't we heard more republicans come up and say wore a like this? at this point looks like you have bob corker seems to be a tough one >> and marco rubio, he final. said i'll sign off on this >> i think if they're going to go ahead and do this because they certainly -- for corker, unclear on his status considering he's not running again but for somebody like marco rubio and others they won't want go into an election year saying they haven't actually had any legislative wins so this important to get done one way or the other >> this really puts in to a big question what is the gop doing especially in the senate a, because they lost that big seat. you got mid terms coming up two years, essentially this seat could go back to the republicans, still a major upset. >> absolutely. i think the rnc and the republican leaders need to focus on the minority vote
6:33 pm
obviously the black women came out to vote for doug jones, and so if they want to keep pushing forward and have a successful he 2018 they will have to include minorities >> i think a lot of things have been said in the past and one example i can think of is donna edwards didn't win in maryland last year, she said the democratic party needs to do more, not just to reach out to african-american women, but to keep them and keep them at the table and bring them into these discussion, this under scores fact that there's a huge power base in alabama that hasn't been tapped for year >> there is definitely a huge power base, but that's the case that was in virginia, in the election last year, people have been well -- it's been well-known amongst african-american women where that vote lies when it comes to the democratic party. certainly the dnc has not -- did not ignore that base going into the alabama election, they spent close to
6:34 pm
very focused not on tv but on african-americans and youth and it totally made the difference, where his vote came out for doug jones was in those areas. >> and speaking of powerful women, speaking of powerful african-american women, owe ma rosa is still dominating the headline, the future of minorities for this white house. >> absolutely they will have to -- i think it's funny because armorosa, we need to make sure we put someone in there that will take the minority seriously and want to persuade and convince minorities that look, trump administration does care about you also. >> i think the reason is, we haven't heard -- we keep talking about it. >> what actually happened. >> she's is going to say her book and i give her credit. if you have a story you sell that. but atema, i remember bill anderson, when he was elected.
6:35 pm
leak america and you saw that stick through even with george w bush, this is not a diverse cabinet the president has around him right now >> this is not. even by bush standards. i know many black conservatives who are quite frustrated with the white house in regards to where they should be, and when she was fired, resigned whatever the case may be both sides of the aisle, african-americans were thrilled about that because they didn't think she was a great advocate in the white house. and specifically in the campaign they said he was fired, there's not these great institutional work within the party ranks, individuals who are african-american or latino or asian sitting at the table had in large amounts of numbers and considering some of the things that happened with charlottesville, things said about the nfl, all the sort of culture wars, it's a concern. >>
6:36 pm
they have to do more to reach out to even black republicans to get them inside the white house and just making some of those decisions >> it will be interesting to see how they fill some of those seats because it's not looking good. >> you go through one year and sort of have to reset. thank you for coming in. when you hit the point after a year, always seems every administration, you hit that reset on january 21 it's of the following year >> except they've been hitting the reset button every month, the 30th of every month, we got spicer leaving, who else? . let's talk about john mccain, still at walter reed. these are side effects of his cancer can therapy and added that mccain looks forward to returning to work as soon as possible of the he's set to return for the final vote on text reform next week. he's five months into his brain cancer treatment.
6:37 pm
he has to physically be in senate, if he can't do so, they will have to hold the bill. also a senator from mississippi, those are two votes they need and you have the democrats saying let's seat doug jones be but looks leak realistically that's not going to happen until end of this year, early january >> mccain is a fighter. seems like it's for side effects, nothing too serious, he is being treated by some of the best at walter reed, hopefully we will see there and we'll see a vote takes place and let's see where the cards lay >> get this over and done and move on >> in the new year, the gop may have to start from scratch to get back on its a game >> a series of sexual misconduct scandals and the rumored are crippling. alee on a is here two talk about it. we're moving forward looking into 2018 and the republicans run dc, thas
6:38 pm
so what do you have to say do to amp up >> first off, if you look at what happened after the election, no one thought we would be here, democrats didn't have a strong chance of gaining a majority going into 2018 but now especially after doug jones won in alabama, you see that's much more likely i think with momentum this tax bill. hopefully, gop hoping it will pass next week, that will be a huge win. >> elana, from what you've heard, do you believe we'd be having this discussion if they nominated luther strange or any other republican assign aside from roy moore >> i think moving forward, yes, there could be more republican seats up. i think more republicans are going to have a hard time in some of these races especially after some of these big losses that you
6:39 pm
republicans are really going to crack down on what they know moving forward. >> for a long time, paul ryan seemed like he would be the next one to step up to the plate to take over the gop. now, his role in question seems like he may be out in 2018, where does this really leave the party? especially on capitol hill >> that's speculation, we've actually, reached out to some of the people and they say might not be the case, but if he does leave, it does leave a huge door open for that. i think that on the hill, they're probably going to try to get someone more in line with trump ideals into that spot but there can be a lot of uncertainty going into that >> thanks for coming in, always good to see you, take your christmas card picture in front of the tree there. looks fantastic. have a nice weekend. big talker the weather, of course. it has been quite a day. cold, a little snow. >> gwen nobody can drive
6:40 pm
>> that's all it takes >> that's all it takes, that and the drop in the temperatures making for slick spots out there. say that ten times. take a look. we've got all the precipitation now moving its way out but in the back edge of it, we've had a few spots that have stayed wet and with the temperature being so low, we got icy conditions, we'll tell you to be careful, lots of holiday partying even on the sidewalks and untreated roads, bridges and overpasses could have some issues. 29 degrees right now in the nation's capitol, at cold one, only 25 at baltimore, a chilly 24 at dulles this hour, 26 at martinsberg, 22 at culpeper and 26 at fredericksburg. sunshine for the weekend mostly on saturday as a ridge of high pressure builds in, only 47 however, but 49 degrees as we warm up a little bit on sunday and that's because we're going to end up getting a nice southerly flow will help to boost the temperature, but it
