victory overnight the senate passed the president's massive tax reform bill. but a snag in the house version means it's going back to the lower chamber for another vote today. still, lawmakers are set to hasn't it white house's biggest legislative victory yet just in time for christmas. fox5's melanie alnwick live on capitol hill with all the latest. mel? >> reporter: good morning, guys. so the congressional conference committee has been working since about 8:00 o'clock this morning just tying up some of the technical details making sure all the language matches and then going through certain rules, procedures in order to get this bill ready for a vote which we expect to happen around noon today. it does seem like republicans do plan on getting this across the goal line. >> the tax cuts and jobs act is passed. >> with some heckling from the gallery, in the wee hours of the morning, vice-president mike pence presided over senate passage of the republican tax plan right along party lines. >> if we can't tell this to the

either line of work. >> reporter: mitch mcconnell with a big win even fare amount of public scepticism. but the more immediate problem, the senate had to make some last minute changes including the name of the bill itself that didn't fit with senate rules. >> without objection the motion to reconsider is laid upon the table. >> reporter: that mean even though the house passed the bill earlier in the day with great fanfare, they'll have to do it again with the changes later today. democratic objections though will remain. >> republicans will be running away from this bill in shame for voting yes this evening. >> reporter: senate minority leader chuck schumer eviscerated republicans but he may have been angrier about the fact that they weren't listening to him. >> this is serious stuff. we believe you're messing up america. you can pay attention for a couple of minutes. >> reporter: this sets up a big win for president trump and republican leaders argue the public will ultimately embrace the plan. >> in february, on february 1st, look at your pa

relief we delivered today. >> reporter: and the way we understand the rest of day is going to go as i mentioned. look to about the noon hour when voting in the house is scheduled to begin. president trump overnight tweeteed out he is planning abot a 1:00 p.m. white house press conference. some of that depends on how things go today in terms of timing, and then there's supposed to be a post passage celebration for republicans. apparently a number of buses are going to be leaving capitol hill here to head to the white house as well. what is still unclear is on what date the president will actually sign the bill into law. live on capitol hill, melanie alnwick, fox5 local news. >> all right, mel, thank you very much. 90:00 sick is the time right now. we continue to follow breaking news out of mexico this morning. right now investigators are trying to figure out what caused a bus packed with tourists to crash in mexico. 12 people were killed and seven americans are among the injured. the tourists

to the mayan ruins when the crash happened. they were in mexico sightseeing during a stop on royal caribbean cruise. now the sun centennial is newspaper in southern florida is reporting some of the victims may be members of a familiarly from lorton have a have. still no word yet on what caused the mangel mess. witnesses say the road conditions were dry at the time of the crash. in washington state, investigators there are trying to determine why the derailed amtrak train was traveling at such a high speed. three people were killed. dozens were injured when it plunged off an overpass. officials say a conductor in training was in the cab with the engineer at the time of the crash. and the brake that eventually stopped the train was automatically activated instead of being applied by the eng engineer. technology that can automatically slow a speeding train was not in use on that stretch of the track. nine sol zero seven if you're one of the lucky ones the holiday break begins today that also means the holiday get away does too and that means traffic. aaa expecti

today and thursday with more than 107 million people hitting the air and roadways. drivers could see travel times three times longer than normal due to a mix of regular commuters and holiday travelers so how do you dodge that bumper to bumper traffic? aaa is add vicing drivers to avoid the peak afternoon hours and consider alternate routes. between three and sick p.m. is the worst time to hit the road if you were hoping to avoid the traffic by hitting the airport now you could be in store for delays there, too. if you're flying out of dulles that's because hundreds of contract workers just walk off the job. fox5's bob barnard live at dulles with the full story. bob, i can see protesters behind you. >> reporter: yeah, erin, these are baggage hand they are had he push the luggage. let's show you real quick these kind of people who push the carts. who push the wheel chairs, and who work as customer agents here. you see a bunch of them in front of this window. they've got about ten of the outdoor windows that they've gotten p

front of of. these are contract workers who want to unionize, they say they work for a texas based company, and we reached out to that company and haven't gotten any response yet, but these workers say that they work in poor conditions, that they're sometimes mistreated and they want $15 an hour as minimum wage. they say they are paid a pauper's wage. they also want to unionize and join seiu and one of the union's local vice-presidents is here. jaime, reach out to huntly usa and haven't heard back yet. but what are these people upset about? they're not union knifed. but they work here and help people get from the curb to the gate. >> yes sir when they travel. >> they're upset because most of these people have to work two and three jobs making as little as 6.25 per hour without reliable tips. most of these people a lot of these people have to sleep at the airport because they work two and three job

so many twists and turns with the mansion murders podcast and sarah fraser you uncovered new very rev have iting details much what's going on? >> there's some big ones in this story. so as you know, we've been working this story for the past nine months, but little over a month ago we had receive an anonymous e-mail essentially saying that katerina savopoulos the daughter of amy and savvas who were murdered she has restraining order against her grandfather that's been in effect since september 21, 2017 season in effect for one year against her grandfather and so we have been working this, and it turns out this is true. it was filed in d.c. the whole process started in august. so this episode really takes a look at that cpo which a civil protective order or restraining order. and takes a deeper look at some of the things that are in that. >> that is a their relationship been strained from what you observed. ? what's the dynamic

behind the scenes again that obvious we work on fact. so we're not roaring those things yet. but i would certainly say there's definitely a lot going on. i mean the grandfather philip savopoulos has been ordered to stay away, no contact, katerina goes to school up in new eng england. cannot see her considering not talk, no texts, nothing. so there's clearly a lot going on, and top criminal defense attorney bernie grim is on this podcast. really does a fantastic job of breaking down what this means. >> what does it mean. >> very telling there was not police report filed, and bernie grim gives some examples of why there wouldn't be a police report filed. >> can you give us an example. i don't know if you don't file a police report, what's that mean? >> in this case, if you -- bernie explains to us in the podcast, if you file a sexual assault, for example, after you file in d.c. in the district of columbia you can take it back. once it's in motion, it's in motion. they're going all the

even if a month or two you go, you know what, i want to take back these charges. too bad. they're going all the way. they're investigating teague egg it to grand jury seeing if they can bring charges and with that brings a lot of public exposure. so one of bernie's thoughts on this is that they didn't want to do that because as you'll hear in the restraining order there's some very graphic things that they did not want to become public. >> you've been so intimately involved in this podcast i mean this has been what you've done for nine months now. >> yeah. >> what i'm wouldn'ting this new revelation, how did it resonate for you? >> it was shocking. i think when you -- we received lots of, you know, we're getting lots of tips and lots of times we've chased some that have been completely not accurate. this one was a big one though. i moon i really thought when i read this i was like oh my god. if this is true, this is really not only a big twist in the family dynamics but for this whole case because like bernie grim said the other big thing you'll find out in this episode there's still a grand jury open in this case. that means a lot o

unimaginable. this promising young woman with beautiful smile would pass away. her mother a veteran police sergeant in the district struggles to make sense of it. >> what makes a child pick up a gun and shoot across a busy intersection 3:30 nest afternoon on bright sunny thursday with everybody outside. >> what makes child do that? >> a reckless act that left her family in deep despair. trying to somehow fine a way to live without her. >> my life has been shattered. i don't know every day i push myself. i've been push myself initially i just couldn't, but some days i can really push myself. other daze, i can't. >> these days, there's comfort in the many photos and videos of a happier time. >> ♪ >> and they're sole lace in her room still the way she left it almost five months

it will feel much different than what we around here yesterday. yesterday we hit 62 degrees. so again going to be cooler afternoon for us. there's quick look at your satellite picture. we have clearing skies off to the north and west, and we're cautiously optimistic that we might be able to get some late day sunshine going but much much your day will be cloudy notice the rain showers down into the carolinas. there's an area of low pressure down there. and we're not expecting the rain around here but the cloud cover associated with that storminess will remain in the mid atlantic for our day today. so we're going to be mostly cloudy this afternoon f you're traveling of course you will hit that rain as you get down into north carolina a little late this morning during the afternoon hours. here's another look at it and again this little area of low pressure stays just south of us so we should keep it dry later today. high pressure from the great lakes will build in tonight, and we're going to be cold tonight. once we get the clearing skies cold tonight with overnight lows near freezing and then a chilly day for, drum roll, our fiss today of winter which gets here

i made an eggnog doughnut eggnog, filling i made pastry cream and flavored it with eggnog flavor. >> not your traditional cream flavored doughnut. >> right. toffee pecan and candied ginger on top. >> you can order doughnuts for the holidays, correct. >> absolutely. >> we have all these flavors and you can just or them online or just call us. >> here's the thing. we were playing with the dough earlier making some of these doughnut holes. now, this is a thicker dough it's more bread like consistency you were saying it it's little more plated to bake doughnuts than home at tra dig al sugar cookie. tell me what goes in make the dough. >> well, it's just basically letting the dough proof overnight. you know, a lot of love. and really it's just butter, it's sugar, it's milt -- it's eggs and yeast. it's a yeast based doughnut we let -- it's important to let it proof. >> you can see how thick it is right there. >> overnight. to develop flavor we're using the same batch

started the first starter like 30 years ago when we first started. >> that's awesome. we just rotate keep going adding little bit of the old dough into the new. so it has that deep flavor. >> what are you frying knit? >> so this is just canola oil. figure we can fry a little, somebody doughnut holes here. >> those fry really quickly 20, their seconds. >> very quick. >> these had proofing out so you can fry one of those or two of these. in the meantime, if you want we can decorate. >> sure. >> cool thing you can do at home if you want to purchase, you know, some plane doughnuts i don't know if i can handle the whole baking of the dough in you little complicated. you can set up a decoration bar for some of the kids at a holiday party keep them interested keep them occupied. >> we've done that a lot. >> great idea. >> definitely you can buy the doughnuts from us and we can -- even the glaze. >> those look so good. >> look how they puff up. >> really cool. >> doughnut holes are coming along. >> that's perfect. then just let them cool
