that fire. roads in the area are blocked. there's no word right now on any injuries. we will continue to monitor the situation and keep you posted. now to the weather. winter officially arrived today with very little fanfare in the d.c. region at about the same time that thousands of people hit the red for the holiday weekend. it is a clear nievment but it is cold tonight. sue palka has the all important holiday travel forecast. hey, sue. hi, tony and shawn. we don't mind cold when you're travelling. it's the rain and snow that we have to watch out for. good news for travelers as we look across the country there is not a lot going on. there's a little stripe of snow. the leading edge of warmer air, but most of the country is pretty quiet includ ing right in h our area where we can expect to see clouds thickening up a little bit. temperatures should level off and maybe even rice a little bit because we're expecting a much warmer day tomorrow. d.c. has dropped down to 37 greece and there are a

temperatures across the northeast, includes boston at 28 . check owlt lexington at 54 and knoxville at 51. there is some warmer air is that going to push in this greks and tomorrow is going to be one of those unusually mild december daze. saturday could be even warmer. just checking for travelers who may be thinking out about heading out later tonight. we've seen no problems at any of the airports, no delays, no weather issues going on in the mid atlantic. if you're going to be travelling tomorrow no big issues, but rain is going to be developing. it will begin in the diseep south and spread it's ' way almost to chicago. we'll see a little bit of snow maybe up through minnesota as well as the lower peninsula of michigan up to upstate new york the rain in our area is going to hold off until much later tomorrow night, maybe eight or 9:00. we are warning our travelers that if you why aring ing to be heading

alerts on the fox5 mobile app. some good news for you, developing tonight a government shutdown has been averted. earlier tonight the senate pass ed the stop gap senate bill. that means the government will stay open now through january 19 . it also gives lawmakers a little breathing more and more time for unfinish ed business, including immigration, a potential budget agreement and healthcare. the temporary funding bill is now headed to the president for his signature. speaking of signatures the president will also likely sign the republican tax bill into law tomorrow. that measure is the most expensive extensive rewrif the tax code in more than 30 years. once signed into law the corporate tax rate will top drop to 21 percent. standard deduction for individuals and couples as well as the child tax credit will double. the bill is considered the first major legislative agreement. of cheevment of the trump administration. new

obviously caught on camera, a violent fight at suitland high school in prince george's county . police are now investigating after reports that someone pulled out a weapon during that fight. the school district sent home a letter to parents to inform them of what happened. fox5's corey coffin is live at the scene now with more. corey. >>reporter: and as you just saw , that video all captured on camera of that fight. in fact, we saw several students in the video filming it on their cellphones we want to warn you it can be disturbing for some viewers. and the video several students can be seen participat ing in this fight. district official tell us the students planned this fight and positioned themselves between business after school so that they weren't immediately seen by security. now, according to a letter sent home to parents, a weapon was used during the fight and three people got hurt. now we showed

wife's car and that allow them to steal it. so one car stolen, multiple cars damaged just on this street. what i'm hearing is that there are rashes of break-ins certain times of the year certainly during the holidays one of my law school classmates reached out to say that a number of cars were broken into her neighborhood in d.c. as well. here's a look at cars that were damaged. white realized this had happened around 6:00 this morning. he said this kind of thing typically doesn't happen in his neighborhood, but clearly a crime that can happen anywhere. he has surveillance cameras that caught at least two of the thie ves on camera and he has turned that over to d.c. police he wants to make sure that people know that d.c. government will recommend reimburse residents for installing outside security cameras, up to $500 for homes, $750 for businesses. the more people have cameras on their homes that

dewas a victorious day for the six people phissing serious criminal charges stemming from the 2017 inauguration protests. they were found not guilty. on remember january 20, d.c. \police\police arrested almost 200 protestors after violence broke out near dupont circle. some of those smashed car windows, but attorneys for the defendants said there is no evidence their clients took part . they say there is no criminal intent behind their pro testing. the defendants tell t us it's been nearly a year of uncertainty. i was anxious, but a certain part of me was certain that the the right result would happen. i think that a lot of people have between scared away from voicing their opinions. they don't want to get arrested they don't want to get pepper sprayed. they don't want to have a stinger gre n.a.d.e. thrown at them. the us attorney 's office release a statement said they respected the judiciary

stepped up in a huge way to help another who they had never met before. we're here to give you christmas. hi, sweat girl. hi christina collins and her children worked with a florida- based charity called believe with me to give the gift of christmas to rod kit a jordan and her family. jordan's husband recently died after serving oversees. they were not in a place to do christmas for themselves. there are two daughters involved and a mom. one week ago our family sent out an e-mail to our family in mclean saying we need all these items. dough stations came pouring in. within 24 hours they had most everything they needed. gifts to pile under the tree. a complete dinner. we have a turkey, a ham and a salad . there's mack and cheese, sweat potatoes and smashed potatoes. so you can have a feast. and plenty of decoration . here's some extra christmas

yesterday investigators identif ied two other vic testimonies from north norton, virginia. the mother from florida was also kivmentd a go fund me page has been set up for the family. a total of 12 crew ship passengers were killed in tuesday's crash. new video tonight shows two people breek ing into a northern virginia restaurant and stealing a cash. it happened last thursday at a mexican restaurant along jefferson davis highway in woodbridge. the suspects threw a heavy object through a window to get inside. they dumped the items at a nearby construction site. we revealed the surveillance footage. we found that the suspects entered the business around three:30 that morning. odds are they probably broke into the business, took the items and then carried them off someplace to where they tried to get into them and were successful. police say there was no surveillance video at that construction where

in 2003, the cedar fire it burn ed more than 280,000 acres. the thomas fire is the only california large wild fire to happen in december. nearly every other fire happened during the summer months. crews finish ed installing steel safety posts on the sidewalk along the las vegas strip. it follows an incident of drivers running into pedestrians. the poster intended to keep pedestrians safe. they are all connected underground by steal frames. they can withstand a head on collision from a 15 a thousand pound vehicle traveling at 15 miles an hour. two confederate statutes were re moved overnight. they removed the statue of jefferson davis at a local park in the city. at another park crews also removed a statue of general nathan bed ford forest. it comes after both parks were sold to a local nonprofit and they
