. this is fox 5 local news at 10:00. the cold air arrived just in time for christmas day. looks like it's sticking around, i'll have a look at that plus chances for snow at 10:00. a holiday tradition, the pope's r inspirational message to the world on the true meaning of christmas. . let the frenzy begin, the deals retailers hope will get you back into the shopping spirit. tips to help you navigate the holiday return, the news at 10:00 starts now. off the top at 10:00 we start off with breaking news from alexandria, firefighters there on the scene of a building fire and this is happening on mt. vernon highway >> we're told the fire is intense and quickly went to two alarms. so far, no word on whether anyone is hurt. firefighters are working to get the fire out. we have a crew headed to the scene. >> we hope you had a great holiday, we'll

nordstrom and ugg. there will be many more, these are a few that have promised black friday pricing. major retailers like kohls, target, pain and macy's will start at 7:00. make sure you know before you go. fully aware of the store's return policy. know which stores will accept your return even if you don't have a receipt. most roar at least a gift receipt and be aware of restocking fee he is. this usually only applies to big ticket electronics or appliances and only if they've been opened. places like best buy and sears still have restocking fees. what about gift cards? for those, you'll need a receipt. but services like card pool allow you to exchange the unwanted card for cash. keep in mind there will be a fee so you won't get the full value of the card back. what about t

. the ntsb is investigating the cause of that small plane crash out of florida. a maryland couple was mentioning the five killed. they were 26-year-old baltimore teacher victory i can't worthington and peter worthington junior. investigators believe heavy fog

new tonight, a dc teacher is accusing united airlines of booting her from her first class seat to give it to a u.s. congress woman. she details the incident on her facebook page she said she was at the houston airport heading home from agoed mall la when she not noticed. the gate attendant told her it was not in the system. she claimed she thinks the airport deliberately cancelled it to accommodate jackson lee. they have reached out to simon to apologize and offer her compensation. right now new details in the shooting of two loudoun county sheriffs deputy, douglas johnson junior is under arrest and charged with shooting two

evan. >> reporter: the deputies are stable. we're also learning more about the suspect through his interactions with a neighbor. here is that suspect. this is a mug shot. we'll show you video of the crime scene from last night. so far, the injured deputies have not been identified by the sheriff's office, we do know they were called to a home on hollow mountain place in sterling yesterday afternoon because a fight between a father and daughter. about an hour, deputies worked to calm down 39-year-old douglas johnson junior. it didn't work according to investigator, johnson went upstairs, reached for a gun, deputies tased him. he was able to fire off several shots hitting the deputies in her arms and legs. i spoke to a neighbor who saw what led up to the call to police and had a prior run-in with the suspect because of a car parked near his house. listen. >> i had a friend that came to drop off some food at the house for christmas, ands

tuesday, temperatures rise above freezing. it's chilly, and temperatures far below normal through the week and into the weekend, we're already below normal. colder by wednesday, we'll struggle to hit the freezing mark. and snow chances later on. peak wind gusts earlier this morning as if you weren't woken up by santa or the presents under the tree, you were by wind, 62 miles an hour. national mall, for example miles an hour, it was how long, it's come down and we're seeing a few occasional gusts. temperatures around freezing here in washington, but mid 20's to upper 20's to low 30's elsewhere. it will be cold, temperatures though probably not falling too far from where we are right now, we may have a low 20's to start off along the mountains and mid 20's here in the district. look at these, these numbers north and west in the teen, 17, 18 columbus, that's the air mass that will keep head

lake effects snow showers continues downwind of lake erie and ontario. it will continue as we continue to see the push of these cold air masses straight out of canada. so as we talk about snow chances we have one of the key ingredients when it comes to getting snow in this area, cold air and lots of it. it will be building and present all week long, as we get one wave of a storm system to move friday and possibly saturday. depends what model you look at. we've got a good setup for snow. now, it doesn't look like there's enough phasing to cause a big storm. it doesn't look like anything is slow enough to cause impacts but friday possibly saturday there's the chance for a few snowflakes to be falling, we'll be watching that closely all week. overnight winds continue to diminish 26 for that overnight low. for tomorrow, heading back to work sunshine, it's cold, 38 for that high temperature. accu-weather seven-day forecast look at wednesday, we don't even hit freezing. teens for lows,

happens to be a bird handler and trainer. he was able to quickly responding take the eagles and take her to a wildlife rescue facility. turn outside she has a broken right wing that will require two months of treatment but glad he was in the right place at the right time. a topless activist trying to snatch the baby jesus in st. peter's square, jumped over the guardrails to rush larger than life, the vatican guard managed to catch the woman before she got to the statues, part of the feminist group. the goal is to quote complete victory over the patrioty. they managed to get the statue before being arrested at another time. her time.

new information about the building fire on mountain vernon highway in alexandria. lindsey watts live with more. >> reporter: this is a large antique store on fire on mountain vernon highway, we'll give you a closer look on the other side of the building, you can see that it is still engulfed in flames, firefighters tell me there was nobody injured, nobody inside the building when it started it was around 9:00, 9:15 when first responders got the call. you can see the huge response, this is near buckman road, there are fire crews lines the street and as we were driving in, you could see the huge plume of smoke from miles away. nobody was in this antique store when it caught fire. just a sad set of circumstances though for the owners of this store with a catching fire on christmas day. we'll be out here continuing to monitor the

came together want it means to the city's history. i think this is just an amazing, um, statement of who we are. >> this magnificent mural is -- it's call 28 blocks, and 28 blocks represents 28 huge marble blocks that were brought in to washington to construct the lincoln memorial. this mural begins with a quote by frederick douglas about earnestness working hard which is a foundation of what we are as americans. these were immigrants from italy and friedman from the united states who did this work to create probably the most iconic memorial in washington, d.c. >> i thought from the florida avenue going across the bypass. really good view from there. >> 50,000 people a day

♪ now to an effort to save the bay it all begins on your plate. note faux journalist eugene russell and fox5 reporter melanie alnwick show us how these harvesters get the job done. >> it's everyone's dream come true. people go on vacation to the chesapeake bay to do what i do for a job every day. >> reporter: miles upstream in the chop tank river a barge unloads its final payload of the season. each oyster shell is carrying precious cargo. >> this one is probably about five days to week old. >> reporter: baby oysters seeds of hope for the future of the chesapeake bay. >> cleaner water, fewer nutrients those are some of the results that can happen from oyster restoration. >> reporter: their story begins where for some it ends. with what oyster lovers call the mermaid's kiss. every crack of a

one of the easiest ways to show our appreciation for our vets. >> they get to seat memorials built in their honor. they get to meet fellow veterans that have served with them to pay tribute to their fellow brothers of arms who paid the ultimate sacrifice who didn't make it home. >> arlington is an incredibly somber place. in the poring rain it's even a more powerful experience to see a group of 65 war veterans saluting a flag right that's sort of where it -- it all comes back to this is all about them and their respect for this country and the things they're proud of. in terms of the centennial at the changing of the guard they cannot speak to the veterans why they're guarding the tomb they communicate their thanks to these veterans by scuffing their shoe. sometimes you can catch
