hi, everyone off the top at ten tonight we're talking about the weather. a winter weather advisory is in effect. for more on that let's get to caitlyn and talk about that. this is not going to be eerie, pennsylvania, by the way. they saw 20 inches of snow from midnight to 6 a.m. it's nothing like that for

we have a winter weather advisory mainly north of washington for a little bit of light snow that will track through after midnight. so light snow overnight, that's the headline that you've got to know about as we head into wednesday purple shows where there is an active winter weather advisory or there will be overnight from 2 a.m. to 11 p.m. this includes low don't county, montgomery county, over towards baltimore county. the concern is on the roadways mainly north of the beltway and washington itself. satellite radar showing a very innocent wave of snow across portion of west virginia and portions of west virginia. during the overnight hours that's really all we're going to see, fox futurecast shows you've got a little wave of some light snow that will move through across places like 2730. i70, we could even see some flurries here in washington but the concern is it's so cold outside that will stick immediately to untreated

going on. >>reporter: i'm a bit of an online shopper. it's so much easier. how busy it gets on the day after christmas it depends on when christmas falls. the fact that it fell on monday and most people are going back to work on tuesday means that this is not your typical after post scris mass shopping and returns day versus if christmas were like on a friday, for example. but i did talk to some of the folks in the stores, the employees here and they do say it is busier than their average tuesday. do yous open as early as 6 a.m. to accommodate all of the folks who are rushing in to take advantage of the zeals, try to do their returns, that sort of thing. the deals include things like clothing, exercise equipment, electronickings, cars are some really big things at the end of the year and anything holiday related so folks can get some deep discounts while also spending their gift cards. i also spoke to some folks who

they're eager to see what they can get on say and others were just holidayed out. after all day yesterday preparing for the family to come over for dinner and cleaning all kinds of stuff around the house it was just so much easier just to take the day off and relax from everything today. i know a lot of people do their returns today so i'm hoping it won't be too long line s. i brought my patients so hopefully it will be good. that's what you're definitely going to need if you head out any time this week to take advantage of of the deals. we anticipate the weekend will be very bus disi as well. amazon is already reporting numbers from their holiday sales. they're reporting one bill transactions this year so far. but you guys the real test will come after the returns are counted as well. we'll know the real numbers how well the shopping season fared in say february or march. corey coffin , fox5 local news. >> it's conside

worst travel times of the year, the days between christmas and new years can be tough especially when drivers have to cope with ice or snow. a couple of hours ago looked like typical rush hour. no complications. right now we are pretty luck bi because even though it's cold we haven't had a big snowstorm that has impacted travel across our reej ofnlt we are following some breaking news right now out of northern virginia. firefighters are on the scene of a semi truck that's on fire on i 95 in fairfax county. crews received the call just before nine tonight. this is video from a viewer that was sent in. you can see the truck is fully engulfed in flames. on the right side of your screen right here is a live picture from sky fox on the scene right now. two northbound lanes of 95 near lorton road are opened right nowcht the driver got out of the truck and is okay. cause of the fire right now under investigation. it appears a group of criminals has been ruin ing the hol day for dozens of people

county. police say they received more than 40 reports of someone stealing things out of cars throughout the county. fox5's evan lambert is at prince george's county police with moamplet. >>reporter: police are trying to solve these cases from over the weekend and yes, even on christmas day, the ma are the jo of these have been crimes of opportunity, people leaving their doors unlocked, valuables in plain site and just so tempting to criminals here in prince george's county. police say over the weekend, 27 thefts from cars were reported and then another 16 on monday, christmas day. you're looking at pictures of some of the thefts that police put out on twitter. in one case someone came out to a car sitting on blocks because the thieves stole all four wheels. in many cases police say people are just forgetting to lock their doors or that they have a false sense of security so don't do that. anything of valuable you, don't leave them visible. don't leave them outside so somebody can walk over to your car, see

and give them an opportunity to break into your vehicle. keep your cars locked and at night make sure you you park your car under a well-lit area. if something does happen there are people in the area that can see what's going on so we can get a good look of those individuals breaking into your property. with the wheels make sure that you have wheel locks our vehicle to ensure that it's tougher for these guys to get your wheels. again, if anyone sees anything, especially over the overnight hours or when it gets dark, i want to encourage individuals to definitely give us a call. police say another common time that criminals use as an opportunity is when people leave their cars running to warm them up. we know it is cold and that gives that opportunity when they leave those doors unlocked. of course remember to lock the doors there as well. live in prince george's county, evan lambert, fox5 local news. >> and staying in prince george's county, police trying to figure out what

happened outside of a home in hyattsville overnight where a man was shot to death inside a vehicle. several suspects were trying to steal a truck when someone inside the house opened fire. fox5's paul wagner with more. >>reporter: it was just after 2:00 this morning that prince george's county police received at least one 911 call coming from this home saying that a person was trying to steal a truck out of their driveway and shots were being fired. the call taking could hear the shots in the background. prince george's county police are trying to get to the bottom of exactly what happened here, but they are investigating the possibility that the shots were coming from an upper level window. take a listen now to some of the police radio transmissions in the minutes after the shooting. the subject caller thinks there is more than one suspect. advised that they were trying to steal their dad's truck. i have a shooter on scene. it's the homeowner of

prince george's county police toed two vehicles from the crime scene. this mercedes suv and a ford f150 pickup truck. the initial calls to police said the mercedes may have been occupied by at least two people and perhaps more who may have pulled you into the driveway of the home before attempting to take the truck. the man who was killed was found inside the truck. no one else was found near the scene and there were no arrests. police came back to the house earlier today where they were seen inspecting a window on the second floor. the upper section of the winnow was broken out and there appeared to be a bullet hole in the lower pain. whatever happened here may have been all recorded on no less than eight cameras that are instilled on at least three sides of the house in the front door. prince george's county police have not yet release the name of the person who was killed, but the the homeowner was not taken into custody and so far no charges have been filed. early this morning police spoke with my colleague kristin leone. >>reporter: at

we do believe that a resident inside of this home shot a man outside of the home and he was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. so we're work ing to establish exactly what issuing ses occurred leading up to that shooting. as far ats relationship goes what can you tell me between the shooter and the victim in this case. we are trying to determine if t there was any relationship. there was serial witnesses inside of the home which we're speaking to and trying to put all the pieces together. what we're told now is there may have bem as many as eleven people inside the house including children when the shooting took place. all of them were taken to the police headquarters where statements were taken. at this hour there have been no arrests. in hyattsville, paul wagner, fox5 local news. >> the search is continuing tonight for the suspects who stabbed a man near union station here in d.c. it happened just after 2:00 this morning. we're told crews rushed

>> now to a fox5 followup on the grade fixing scandal in prince george's county schools. in the last week we've uncovered new information that top school leaders knew students were graduating without meeting requirements more than a year ago. fox5's lindsay watts broke the story last june. she continues to press for answer for the community. my children, our children, our teachers have been disis

happened in our school system. at the most recent school board meeting parents were furious. when you go to the polls this november, vote them all out. some calling for the school's ceo and board chair to resign. prince george's county knew about mismanagement of student records. this after fox5 uncovered shocking new information. i saw that fox news broke a story that there was an internal audit done by prince george's county officials in 2015. we've told you how a recent state audit found that prince george's county students are graduating without meeting requirements and mismanagement of student records. turns out the school system performed its own audit a year and a half ago that found these same things. yes yet top management at the school system never mentioned it in the lead up to the state audit instead they adamantly denied that there was any problem. back in june fox5 showed you teachers and staff who said

change students dz grades to make sure they graduated. the staff knows exactly what's happening so it's widespread. it prompted four school board members to write to the governor saying there was a systemic effort to fraudulently boost the graduation rate, a significant achievement of doctor kevin maxwell and part of the reason his contract was renewed for furthermore years, a yearly compensation package of nearly half a million dollars. maxwell called the board members' claims politically motivated to try to get rid of him. the false allegations about our graduation rates strike at everything that prince george's county schools stand for. the allegations that were made are reckless. when those accusations are made they're not about improving the system. those accusations are made about trying to disrupt and turn over leadership again in prince george's county. but in our most recent interview, we confronted m

school system's own audit and he admitted he did know in 2016 some students were graduating without meeting requirements. when the board members came forward with these claims that some students were graduating who shouldn't, you called it all politically motivated, but you knew at the time that there was something to this. so why didn't you just come forward and present the internal audit findings at that point. so there's a different between the what and the how. when we do audits and we do these to improve our practices and again we do a loft audits. while the recent state audit found nearly 30 percent of recent graduates in a sample group either should not have graduated or didn't have the records to show they did not have it did not find there was system wide intimidation or corruption to boost the graduation rate. when you're graduating students that don't meet the requirements knowingly that's a definition of wrongdoing. school board ed

my family used to do summer vacation up there. it's amazing to see. they have seasons. that's what they said about the lake effect towns. we have beautiful summers, by the way it's still been snowing all day, they're up to 662.9 inches. you think about emergency vehicles trying to get around in this. this is a situation where you really need to be prepared to be snowed in. you really did need to go to the grocery store. you did need the toilet paper. and you're going to continue to need it through wednesday. they could get an additional five. they are heart i people up there , but everyone has a breaking point. i think 62 inches of snow will do that. home here much, much quie ter. we have a little bit of light snow is that expected to move through the area tonight. we're not down wind of major great lakes so that helps. we don't

masses blow in. some light snow mainly north of d.c. moving through overnight. it should be out by early morning tomorrow. behind it we turn sunny and breezy as the artic wind will crank up and we'll have bitterly cold wind chills. also still late week snow chances. they're still in the forecast although it's a little uncertain what's going to materialize. right now it's 34, above freezing in d.c. but widespread 20s showing up north and west which is where the wrgs has been issued. places like leesburg, gates but, frederick, places like colombia, maryland up into howard and carroll county and over towards baltimore county. they are at risk for some slippery conditions as we begin the morning commute tomorrow with whrit of light snow that's moving through overnight. really light stuff, but ' just a coating with this very cold ground. this is what we're watching just a very small area of light snow moving through portions of pennsylvani

to move in until after midnight there's nothing close by right now. this whiteys very light stuff. it will cross two p 30 mainly staying north of the d.c. beltway, but probably impacting the baltimore beltway more by 7 a.m. a loft the snow is ending and we quickly become sun initial but it is the concern for some of the light snow on the cold surfaces to ice over making it a little has just for anyone communicating. we can see some flurries here in washington and then we turn aour tension to the bitterly cold wind chills. temperatures will barely hit freezing and then they'll fall. with the winds picking up we have single digits north and west. by thursday morning single digits for just about everyone as we continue to get colder here. lots of cold air is present and what does that mean? anything that materializes in the form of a storm system will produce snow. we've

arizona cardinals wide receiver larry fitzgerald is a hero to many in his home state. this christmas fitzgerald wanted arizona ons to honor john mccain . fitzgerald penned a letter to sports illustrated wanting people to know what mccain has meant to him and to countless others across the state and around the country. this is a bit of what fitzgerald wrote. when i think about christmas and i think about senator mccain i think about giving. the sacrifices that john mccain has made for our country. fitzgerald went onto say he's in the a a little bit political person. you don't see him talk politics at all but he says he has developed a loft admiration for senator mccain over the years. a montgomery county police officer injured in a crash. your news at 10:30 continues now. this is fox5 local news at

arrested on an outstanding check of your headlines now at 10:30, two people are under arrest in connection with a christmas day fight that turned violent in owedden town, maryland. police arrested 17 year old ryan gol den and her ex-boyfriend jeff lopez. she got into a fit with her ex-boyfriend new girlfriend her ex-boyfriend shot her in the leg. gold den and lopez face first and second degree murder charges. a smoke alarm woke up a sleeping woman saving her life . the alarm gave her enough time to get out of the fast morning fire that destride her home. the fire broke out at 2 a.m. the woman suffered only smoke inhalation and is expected to be okay. the fire department believes an electrical issue sparked that fire. this of course a good reminder to either replace your batteries or get new smoke deck ors. montgomery county overnight firefighters got the call to a home

help a patient out of the home. ems crews had to stabilize and strengthen the stairs with the help of firefighters so they could transfer the person from their home to an ambulance. fire crews did that in an hour and the paying was taken to the hovment a crash happened near olney just after noon. the officer and two others were taken to the hospital. they're expected to be okay but police still aren't sure what led up to that collision. three people are dead tonight after a firery crash and explosion in charles county. police say the driver lost control, hit a tree. fox5 a's anjali hemphill talked with the man and his 15 year old stepson who say they tried to save one of the victims by dragging him out of that fire. the woods behind me are charred and there is now a growing memorial here with flowers for the three people who died. we spoke to a family who thought they were seeing christmas lights through the trees when they drove up on the scene early this h morning and one

started recording on their cellphone. it is somebody. now we have learned blurred the video but you can actually see a man laying on the ground trying to waive down the car going by and you can even hear him calling out for help and then you hear someone in the car say i hear somebody. car benjamin was driving while his 15 year old stepson shot this video. benjamin tells me they were driving home after visiting family in maryland for christmas . it was around 1 a.m. when they approach the intersection of hawthorne road and noticed light coming from the woods. instead of continuing on they decided to issuing s l back around and make sure someone didn't help. take a listen. we turned back around and we drove past the scene. we heard somebody yelling and we seen a body right beside the car . so we pulled his body from the car all the way to the street until the police

came. standing right there until the police officer pulled up. i kept asking him was anybody in the car with him and he couldn't tell me. we did our part to get him to the hospital we tried to keep him alive, but it wasn't god's will. you have to do what you have to do. we in a position to help them. that's how i was raised. it's a terrible situation altogether. >> our sky fox chopper captured these images later this morning of the burned car in a nearby salvage car. investigators say this was a mercedes-benz that was headed southbound on rose hill when the driver lost control, veered off the road and hit a tree causing it to catch fire and then spload from the heat. even after benjamin and his stepsons \son\{^son}'s brave earths unfortunately all four people in the accident died. the man benning anyone tried to help was 24 year olderric lamont moss. he was air lifted to med star hospital where he did not survive. two other

found in the wreakage but they have not release their names. it is not clear if speed or alcohol was a factor in the crash. a maryland man was ar rested at bwi airport for trying to bring a loaded imun through security check point. maryland transport authority police confiscated the firearm and arrested the man on especially with once charges. it's the fifth gun tsa officers had detected this year at that airport which sets the record for the most guns confiscated at bwi in a ipg s l year. a battle over a first class seat on a united flight has now led to accusations of racism. a teacher says she was booted for fredericksburg her seat for congress woman sheila jackson lee. united claims simon canceled her flight. simon maintains the airline deliberate ly karns eld her flight to accommodate jackson lee. she thinks the issue has

lts he only officially been winter for a few days. but already winter is causing a few problems. fox's david lee miller reports. >>reporter: bitter cold and dangerous winter weather conditions now affecting large portions of the us. the girls wanted to go ice skating, but we tried, but it's really cold. it's freezing. the national weather service warning colder than normal temperatures are expected across the midwest and northeast for the rest of the year. you just prepare with your coat, your

artic air and winds in minnesota and wisconsin, temperatures can reach minus 35. in parts of ohio, hazardous winter road conditions have had state officials reducing some highway speed limits to 30 miles per hour. in other places snow has been causing problems. a lot of snow just keeps coming. it won't stop. in eerie, pennsylvania, they've received nearly 606 inches of snow in 30 hours shattering many records. the national weather service say s this is the greatest two- day total in the state of pennsylvania. meantime in boston a jet blue airways lane slid off the taxi way at boston 's logan airport. the fly coming present are in from savannah, georgia briefly skid ded when it landed. fire crews did help passengers off the plane onto buses to take them to the terminal. in new york, david lee miller,
