395 in a ford fusion and according to anthony miranda left the highway and drove around a high-rise office tower in an attempt to lose him. the two then got back on to the highway, and flew at a high rate of speed in bound on 395 before coming to a stop at the pentagon. that's where miranda said the two came to a stop next to a pentagon police officer. miranda said the bullet went into the rear door and ricochetted back to the driver's side. miranda said cara bello was a former member of the military and works at the pentagon, something we were unable to independently verify >> he tried to claim the shoot walking self-defense at the time. he said that i was chasing after him and he shot at me in self-defense. it was

2018. good news is we don't have snow to go along with i if you can brave the outdoors you will be able to. who doesn't want to do that? we had a few flurries move through north of town overnight. a trace of snow registered at bwi and dulles but near dc, we just saw a few flurries flying, a test meant to the cold air pouring in and the arctic air i'm afraid is here to stay. it looks likes temperatures will only he keep falling off. especially tonight it's supposed to be really cold. it's 27 in washington, 25 in manassas, 24 at dulles, 20 in hagerstown. and like jim said, we had decent amount of sunshine, the winds were fairly light. although at this moment we have a bit of a breeze, ten to 15 miles an hour here at washington, that's all it takes to get those bitter windchills, feels like 15 outside. 14 in gaithersburg, 15 in frederick. seven in hagerstown, overnight into emergency room tomorrow morning, you start to get into dangerous territory. the windchill advisory is out fo

a virginia house race that ended with a tie was set to be by drawing a name >> but it caused the drawing to be cancelled. political reporter ronica cleary live in rosslyn on this. >> i can't believe we're talking about a race from back in november. now, originally, shelly simon, she's the democrat, she originally lost this race to the republican david yancy by ten votes. then there was a recount, which gave simons the victory by just one vote. this is the reported ballot that it comes down to. a three, judge panel, weighed in, the next day after that one vote victory was determined, this ballot was originally determined tobin valued. you can see the person who voted checked off both shelly and david. but upon closer look, the three judges looke

this person voted for republicans in every other race, there appears to be a strike-through the vote for the democrat, so they gave this ballot to the republican. now, with that, the race then became an actual tie. so what happens in the district when there is a tie? well, let me tell you, it's kind of wild, they just draw a name. now, that event was scheduled for today. we were going to be there for you. but news broke yesterday that the democrat would be taking legal action in the matter. so late last night, the virginia state board of elections decided to cancel it. it defended this idea of drawing a name. they say that it is in compliance with the code of virginia. but the statement went on to say drawing names is an action of last resort. any

regarding the election or recount should be resolved before a random drawing is conducted. now, let me tell you the out come of this race affects far more than 9th direct it affects the bam of power in the the entire house of delegates in virginia. if the republican win, the republican it's maintain the majority of seats. if the democrats win, the house will actually be divided with 50 republicans and 50 democrats. i spoke with ron meyer, the loudoun county supervisor and a political analyst for media dc for his take on the significance of this outcome. take a listen >> it's way bigger than the 9th district. it decides the majority. whoever has majority has the superior courtship gets the committee chairs, gets to decide what comes forward and when, so it's tremendously

. four who teens face murder charges for allegedly throwing a sandbag that hit and eventually killed a driver below. the teens are 13 and 14. the sandbag they dropped crashed through the windows of a car where 22-year-old was sitting in the passenger seat. died last friday. american airlines apologizing to two african-american basketball players for accusing them of stealing. they

hustle. they were kicked off in dallas on christmas eve after a flight attendant accused them of stealing blankets from first place, turns out they were handed to the players as they made their seats in coach. the airline apologized and rebooked them in first class new security measures are in place in disney in florida. ed they're replacing do not disturb signs with room occupied. the coincides requiring a disney employee to enter each room at least once a day even if you choose not to have it cleaned. the company expected to roll out the new security measures for all of its hotels in the coming weeks. the white house removing the famous jackson magnolia tree planted on the south grounds in 1835 by president jackson, the white house said the tree is weak and old, that was confirmed. it pose as safety risk. it's

. this is fox 5 local news at 5:00. new detail it's tonight in the death investigation of a baltimore city homicide detective. today, the fbi represented the baltimore police department's to take over the probe. >> tisha lewis with more. >> reporter: jim and sarah, detective sean suiter was shot to death while investigating a 2016 homicide case last month. it happened shortly before he was due to testify in a federal polices corruption case. baltimore police commissioner kevin davis said the case had

attached to it. and formally requested the fbi take over the investigation. suiter's widow, along with baltimore city mayor catherine pugh also wanted the fbi to look into his death but the fbi declined saying it has no reason to believe suiter's death is connected to the corruption probe. >> an abundance of caution, i wanted the credibility to be at its highest level, transparent and i wanted then and still want now, folks in baltimore to realize that i will not hesitate to ask for any assistance whatsoever to help us get to the bottom of this case and find out exactly what happened. >> in the letter to the city, fbi assistant director steven richardson said we believe it would be prudent for your office to continue as the lead in this investigation with our current commitment to assist and support

cold looks to last well into 2018. going to be very cold new year's, wherever you go 27 in dc, 28 in annapolis, 21 westminster. 22 in martinsberg. these are the air temperatures, wind out of the northwest and you get windchills in already the single digits for some of our colder spots, hagerstown and winchester, 14 in gaithersburg, 15 in washington, 17 in annapolis, it is biting when you step outside and it will be all night. we got clear skies overhead. we had flurries north earlier this morning, picked up a trace of snowfall at bwi and dulles but nothing else coming down the pipeline, clear and cold overnight. here's your future windchills, check this out. this is at your. we're seeing single digits everywhere. by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning as you're about to head on it. you're looking at in some cases windchills around zero, that would be frederick towards hagerstown, maybe gaithersburg allowing the windchills to bottom out. as we go through the day it doesn't get much better, temperatures rise into the upper
