have been hanging out near zero for most the overnight hours. up to 18 steve. 2 degrees warmer than it was a few hours ago. 14 in gaithersburg. let's see. still 11 in hagerstown. 18 quantico. 19 leonardtown it is bitter c cold. no doubt about it you mix in winds out of the north and north and west feels like four right who now here in the city 1 degree up in hagerstown and two dulles you get the sense how cold it is. make sure that you are properly dressed if you'll be outside for any period of time today. because it's just not going warm up. our daytime highs forecast to only be in the mid to upper 20s. it will be beautiful looking day. arctic high pressure building will deliver a nice afternoon if you're looking out the window but again cold today. cold tonight. we will rebound back into the 30s tomorrow with maybe a little period of snow around here early saturday. but then the overall theme as we get into the holiday weekend into the new year, the cold and it will continue later today. those are not forecast low temperatures for tonight. those are forecast high temperatures for later today. just 22 in

28 here in the city. 24 in leonardtown. so again take cold seriously it will be cold for the next several days. all right. >> all righty. >> ta-da back to you guys. >> tucker just talk about this. we're not the only ones dealing with arkansas tick outbreak. bitter cold temperatures have taken hold of most of the northern united states and old man winter sticking around for the foreseeable future. wind chill warnings were posted for dozen states yesterday with feels like temperature dipping well below zero. international falls the self proclaimed ice box of the nation plunged to 37 degrees below zero yesterday. wind chill advisories or warnings are in effect for much of new england northern pennsylvania and new york. and then there's this. check this out. erie pennsylvania made headlines for it's own winter wallop earlier this week now new time lapsed video shows the 5 feet of snow piling up. the situation there is so bad that the national guard was even called in to help them dig out. that's pretty

called in to deal with snow that's rough. >> i can't imagine that. >> lower right part of the screen you saw that snow starting to build up there. but then you also saw them clear it out in hurry, too. >> exactly. >> on that same note sue palka her parents live in erie she posted a picture on her twitter account. >> wow. >> 30 something inches of snow they helped clear them out. good news for them. >> can you imagine what the store shelves must have look like right before that hit. >> the no bread and milk for two years. >> wild night on the roads in fairfax county. police chase ending in violent crash. multiple vehicles involved. multiple people taken to the hospital. including seven passengers in a van. annie yu live on the scene in herndon with more how this all started and more importantly how it ended. annie? >> reporter: hey, maureen g morning everybody. pretty wild crazy night for fairfax county police. the suspect led them on a pursuit and then finally crashed the vehicle right here at this intersection at fr

centreville road and herndon, virginia. we can tell you this morning the suspect is in the hospital in custody. he is in serious condition facing serious charges as well. but police say this morning that they have not identified him. now this video is from last night. it all started around 8:00 o'clock. they say that the suspect knock on the door of a home on autumn drive which isn't too far from here a child answered the door. he assaulted the child and then fled in a stolen car. he then crashed into a man nearby driving a pickup truck. he assaulted that man and carjacked his pickup truck and drove off. officers responding to the child assault spotted him on the road and after a sioux pursuit the suspect crashed into a van carrying seven people near centreville road at this intersection they finally arrested him. he's in the hospital facing charges. >> police do not know the motive as far as the relationship between the suspect and the child and this home on autumn drive.

him and we don't know the condition of the child. here's the very latest from fairfax county police. >> this is muddle fee tee facetted investigation. we have several scenes, crime scenes, um, the crash is quiet, um, a bad crash. and we have called out mull pell resources our command bus is on scene. and, um, as we piece things together and find out motive for the initial call, what led to this pursuit, what led to the crash, we have all the investigative units on scene to piece that altogether. >> reporter: now one of the seven passengers in the van is still at the hospital we're told that this person has serious injuries. an officer was also injured during all of this. and fairfax county police says the officer is expected to be just fine. so that is good news. that's the very latest here from herndon, virginia, annie yu fox5 local news. >> annie thank you very much. no glove, n

annie toughing it out in the cold this morning as the investigation into the amtrak crash in washington state continues this morning we are hearing horror stories from some passengers in the moments after the derailment a lot of confusion. a lot of folks worried about their co passengers because investigators released some of the chilling 911 audio from passengers on board. take a listen. >> this is 911. >> i'm on the train from tacoma. we just crash. we're probably going need medical aid for lot of people. >> we're on amtrak train accident. >> number of people called 911 obviously whimpering in pain bleeding from head injuries, days dazed by the crash. the accident left three people dead, many more injured. the train speeding 80 miles an hour in a 30 miles an hour zone on a curve when it crashed. ntsb do know for certain that technology that slows a speeding train was not in use at the time.

9:08 right now. let's check the morning briefing. first up a new twist in that alabama senate special election. republican roy moore has now filed a lawsuit in an effort to keep the state from certifying democratic doug jones as the winner. the suit was filed yesterday just about 14 hours before a state canvassing board meeting that would have officially sealed jones' victory. moore's attorney calling for fraud investigation in new vote saying he believes there were irregular will thes during the election. alabama secretary of state says he has no plans to delay the meeting and has seen no evidence of voter fraud. jones won the elections by about 20,000 votes. next up, with just days in 2017, president trump and is delivering a art cord on his cos >> the commander in chief is still in florida where he's spending time for the holidays but he's been fairly outspoken these first fuse days about his administration's achievements and his own presidential performance. >> we want to give these people for the great job they. >> president trump spending his fi

a west palm beach firehouse. praising the work of firefighters and paramedics and his own administration. >> we have more legislation passed including the record was harry truman long time ago and we broke that record. >> the president touting his administration's work over the past year including rolling back government regulations and cutting taxes while claiming credit for the stock market hitting record highs. plus the president tweets this week bolstering of past year achieve manies including an 83% increase in arrest of ms-13 gang members and associates. a dramatic drop in isis fighters since inauguration day from 35,000 to 1,000. and optimistic forecast for 2018 saying the gop's recently passed tax cut bill will result in more jobs. president trump's twitter report card coming as his predecessor president obama in an interview with prince harry took aim at the

new tax laws kick in but the irs now says, whoa, not so fast. for details what you need to know fox5's kristyn lee ron trying to break it down for us. i'm all ears because like a lot of people out there i'm con confused. >> reporter: right, maureen it is a very confusing topic i heard erin mention earlier theism rs it sounds like they're trying to get a handle of everything as well a lot to break down here this morning. but the important thing here to keep in mind is that the cap going in to 2018 starting january 1st will now be set at $10,000. so to truly break this down, that means if you're a d.c. homeowner, and you pay, let's say, $40,000 in property taxes, you can only fully deduct $10,000 of that going forward. so you mentioned a lot of people are rushing, waiting in line, seeing what that means for their property taxes. and essentially they're trying to pay their 2017 and 2018 taxes before this all goes into

payment up front to do so. but many people say that this is well worth it in the end. in fairfax alone we're told that they processed roughly 2500 pre-payments so far. now, however the irs says these pre-payments may be tax deductible under certain circumstances. so keep that in mind here. they posted a notice on their website i'm going to receipt that ride now. so we can all fully understand. they say and i quote, "a full deduction here depends on whether the taxpayer makes the payment this year and whether the property taxes are assessed before 2018". so, again, a lot of questions here. a lot of people in this case officials recommend that people before you go and wait in line see whether or not your qualified or not to go and speak with attacks professional in this case. so that's the very latest here from the treasury department. i'll zen it back to you in studio. >> that's lot. >> a lot going on make sure you talk to the people that aren

♪ it's 20 minutes past the hour now on this thursday morning. erin has a check of on the stories making headlines this morning. at 9:20 this morning first up the afghan president condemning a tack on muslim cultural center in kabul. at least 40 people were killed and 30 others wounded. it happened shiite dominated neighborhood. officials say an unknown number of suicide attackers first set off an explosion outside the building, then detonated bombs in the basement. people were gathered to commemorate the soviet invasion of afghanistan. no group immediately claimed responsibility for that attack. well the power is back on in disneyland anaheim, california after major outage yesterday forced guests to get off rides and leave the park. officials say a transformer problem caused the outage in toon town and fantasy land around 12 rides were affected but luckily no one was hurt. baltimore police say the fbi has turned down their request to

take over the death investigation of detective sean suiter. last month, police say suiter was fatally shot in the head by his own gun after getting into a confrontation with a suspicious man he'd approached in vacant lot. questions emerged after it was revealed that suiter was due to testify the next day before a federal grand jury about a group of indicted officers. fbi says there's no evidence to suggest detective suit's death was directly connected to the federal corruption invest investigation. and that's why baltimore police should remain the lead on the case. apple now facing eight class action lawsuits over slowing down older i phones. the lawsuit accuses the company of not telling customers it slowed down the devices performance and that's because of a weak battery. the suit claims customers were encouraged to buy a new iphone instead of just replacing the battery. finally, stay put. lesson in patience. that's the message from new study when it comes to switching lines at the gross row store. experts say m

that is you have in your holiday repository and use it throughout the year. really get a bang out of your buck. >> can we start here. >> yup. what we we pulled products from live local boutiques in old town alexandria the first item that we love to repurpose and one of my personal favorites is gift wrapping paper and gift bags. >> how do you do that if you just had all these christmas gifts unthe tree? how do you repurpose that. >> there are people -- we have red roles. what we recommend everybody probably has extra roles sitting there. extra give bags this is really good time to stock up on all those after holiday sales. >> that's true. >> things are 50 or 70% off. think about buying things that are going to help you thro throughout. so solid color paper. >> okay. so your reds, your blurbs, metallics. so here's an example paper we use i like to kind of embellish and kind of elevate everything. so this is just neutral

colors winter brrr reece from a shop in old town cold penny post i just kind of elevate it with a nice pat turn ribbon brings it up a knowledge and makes your pack taj pretty. this is gold metallic bag. read and green for christmas. put silver, blue for hanukkah. black in new year's eve and use this year round. accessorize with different colored paper. >> don't get married to the santa claus and things overt christmas themes on them. >> exactly. >> my favorite in terms of holiday to wrap that up, this right here is actually a gift wrap paper. >> you do it as are runner. >> i did it as a runner. >> i love this idea. start with a quiet paper cloth and just put in a role of paper. you get it dirty you roll it up and toss it. >> so use this as theme to take this to the second item. >> quality paper, too. not that he will cheap poe stuff that tears the second you try to wrap anything, right. >> so i kind of

next thing new year's eve theme and our next item to repurpose is glass wear. so this is actually a vintage set from local shop in old town as well called the hour. so using the metallic wrapping paper i pulled in metallic vo tiffs. here's something i used wooden birch. >> that is gorgeous. >> during the holidays use a ribbon that's plaid i love christmas plaid take it off for new year's eve put any other ribbon in. and then so this is -- use this for elegant dinner for christmas. but then you go into valentine's and make it casual and bring night memorial day and -- even fourth of july with the red. >> absolutely. >> that can really be year round. >> what's a place setting beautiful dinner set without a centerpiece. so this year is actually for my studio i own boutique studio in old town where you come in and we teach you how to make custom home decor with raw materials. so this is a box that we introduced in the

it says friends and family gather here. and this is great for the -- we are using to repurpose. here's the plain box. in the fall you can put artichokes. you can put dried leaves. you can put pumpkins. christmas we put christmas ornaments in it. and here's how i wanted to show how we purposed it for an elegant new year's eve dinner. i like to use things that are in the yard i literally went outside and caught my hydrangea bush and spray paint id it with gold. >> pine cones. these are all elements. this nab kipp ring. >> wow. >> you can put it on your -- accent plate or tuck it in here. >> i love it. >> we have to breeze through this one. they're wrapping me. >> okay. this is start with a foundation wreath accessorize your door every holiday the simplest thing i chose going with the new year's eve theme, metallic ribbon hank it on your door and change it out worry season it is.
