>> take a look at this picture from the virginia state police sex offender registry. this is the same 42 year old gregory lee, convicted of attempted rape back in 1999 in alexandria, court records also show lee was convicted twice of assaulting a law enforcement officer, first back in 1996, then again, ten years later, along with he will looting police, dui, and hit-and-run. the stafford county sheriff's department says lee shot and killed his wife, 36 year old melissa d lee at their apartment they shared off her on drive 11:30 thursday morning before fleeing in a black ford explorer than leading state troopers and sheriff deputies on chase on i95 in stafford. investigators say, lee fired several times, during that pursuit from his drivers side window while still moving. striking both a trooper, and a deputy car in the windshield. somehow, both were able to duck in time, and were not seriously hurt. it is believed lee shot himself in the head before losing control of his suv and flipping it

northbound lanes. he was later flown to the hospital but later died. fox5 has spoke with lee's sister, who says, he and his wife, melissa, new each other since high school had been married more than a decade. >> the couple had two children, who are believed to be home at the time of the shooting. they're now staying with family members. and she also says her brother had suffered from mental illness, in recent years. in stafford, fox5 local news. >> new details tonight about the apparent murder of a woman in southeast dc. police were called to adrian place just off ridge road last night to respond to a car fire, once the fire was out, officers discovered the body after woman inside of the vehicle's trunk. investigators say the woman was shot several times, so far no word on her identity, or who may be responsible for her death. the search is on for suspect after a dc man was found dead on the side after busy road.

evening, they found armany kohl's lying in the shoulder of the highway along dc295 kenilworth avenue in capitol height on the dc line. investigators believe someone turned kohl's out after vehicle they say, he had been shot several times, he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, detective now trying to determine a motive for the shooting and they're asking anyone who may have witnessed this event along 295 to come forward. >> look, i'm not going to tell you anything you don't know right now. it is cold, very cold, and some snow might be moving into our area late tonight, so v dot getting ready, virginia department of transportation says crews will be out tonight to treat the roads since the roads are cold, any snow will likely stick, and drivers should pay attention to any ice on wet pavement which woe create, and v dot, if the weather takes a turn just stay off the roads altogether. and the district snow team will go into action this evening, crews out pre-treating roads in preparation for whatever happens overnight.

the cars, as people who are donating kind of stay warm inside and comfy. but again, people are donating. and they get to drive away with not only feeling good, having given something back, but of course the all-important receipt. before 2017 ends. >> i've gotten an lot of things to clear out. and i assume from the line of people here that a lot of people are doing the same thing. >> what did you donate? >> clothing items and a shelf. >> just to help other people out, during times of trial, and tax breaks, yes, i give every year. i give every year, so, it is good. >> all right, the salvation army will be open to except donations today, through new years eve, this is just one of four locations across northern virginia. including donations, woodbridge, masses of course, also donation sites in the district and maryland. now we're told the donations have been coming through non-stop. again, these last three days of the year tends to b

busiest, from here, the donated goods are sorted and then sold at deeply discounted prices, at salvation army locations across the country. we're told most of the donations coming in are clothing. of course other items are accepted. >> right now, we're busy all day long from the time we open until the time we close. folks know it is the ends of the year. they're looking to get their donations us to, a lot of people are just bringing us what they got new stuff for for christmas, so they are bringing us the old stuff. >> all right, not only do the donations go to families who may otherwise go without, they also provide work for the salvation army for people who need jobs, and of course, the rush to donate these last three days of 2017. of course, the rush may be motivated by, again, the receipt that you get that you can then claim on your 2017 taxes, of course, all of these donations are tax deductible, and people are still driving through, hoping to make their donation before the

>> this is the worse fire tragedy we've seen in this city in at least a quarter century. >> that fire that tore through bronx apartment building last night killing 12 people was started by a kid playing with the stove. four children, including a one year old baby girl died, 14 other hurt, four remain in critical condition. so as you heard, mayor de blasio say the worse fire tragedy in new york city in 25 years, they described in detail how they believe it started, and how it spread so quickly. >> this fire started in the kitchen on the first floor, it started from a young boy, three and a half years old, playing with the burners on the stove. the fire got started, the mother was not aware of it, was alerted by the young man screaming. she exit dollars her apartment with her two year old and three year old, and left the door open. so this fire quickly spread u

fire travels up the stairway acted like a chimney. it took the fire so quickly upstairs, that people had very little time to react, they couldn't get back down the stairs, those that tried, a few of them perished. others escaped, were helped out, on to the fire escapes, were taken down by our members. so although our members got here in little over three minutes, and bravely entered the building and did everything they could, and did save a number of residents, this lost is unprecedented. >> took more than 170 firefighters respond. this is cell phone video of them working to save one of the victims. earlier today, officials stressed that if there is a fire in an apartment, you must always close the door when you exit to prevent that fire from spreading rapidly. lauren? >> such a tragic reminder. >> all right, michael hammell, do you remember him, he's the officer in the middle of this

photo. he was dubbed the hot cop after this picture was posted to the gainesville department's facebook page and went viral. well, we're now learning that he resigned from the department on december 6, the same day that he was supposed to appear for an internal affairs interview. hammell was under investigation for posing anti-semetic content on facebook, and possibly having sex on duty. hammell shot fame for his-self ' with other officers while working the night of hurricane irma. >> here's my promise to you. i may be leaving the senate, but i'm not giving up my voice. >> senator al franken delivered some final remarks he get ready to leave office, his resignation comes at the urging of his own party following accusations of sexual harrass: promised supporters to continue fighting for his state of minnesota. >> i think about the last decade or so of my life, through the lens of the people i've met, the people i've had the privilege to work

at one-all. yes, the nats lost in game five. but again, we're not focusing on that. the thirds best moment of the year for sports might be one you're not aware of. arlington resident mike is ultramarathon err. he pull off amazing athletic feat this year, completed finishing seven marathons on seven continents. that's antartica, seven consecutive days. not only did he finish the marathons, he ex he'd. averaging two hours 45 minute per marathon. then that is a record time for the world marathon challenge. props to him. number two, this shot. john wall blowing the roof off the verizon center. game six against the celtics, well, never known for his three-point shooting, hit one of the biggest shots in wizards history to force game seven. and instead whatever was called the verizon sent near a frenzy. maybe little too hi, i was, there the atmosphere was electric, and there is nothing like a big wizards moment in d.c. just feels unlike any other sport mont

right into a brand new year, 2018. so no warming up there. ridge of high pressure what we are talking about, that's going actually move it way out, as we get ready for clipper system to head in. that's what's going to bring us our fast-moving snow. >> this is not coastal system where you can get maybe a lot more in terms of accumulation as it sticks around. >> clipper system from the west moving rapidly to the east. and so once it moves in tonight, into tomorrow, it will be in and out of here. but right now, here are the areas that are being affected. and as far as advisories are concerned, they're widespread out to the west, but for us, only really here to our far northwestern areas, along the allegheny front. this is where they're going to see some accumulations cents of maybe three, 4 inches, maybe even six or more in the mountain us areas, but elsewhere, not talking for us dealing with any of that at all. in fact, into the city we may get maybe an inch of accumulation or even less, the

northwest, mason-dixon line, maybe one to 3 inches, so here is a look at future cast, see the timing, it moves into the overnight hours tonight. and then tomorrow morning, in the afternoon, maybe another passing flurry. and then it is totally out of here. temperatures on the other hand are different story. here are the lows from thinning mo, very cold, right now only into the 20's, we've got some wind chills, so feels a lot cooler than that, it feels like it is in the teens to the north and the northwest, as a result of that. but, most of the country in trenton, arctic air mass, that's going to be sticking around, and then we have another cold blast, later, in the week, next week, of where we will see the same story, with that cold air really keeping us entrenched. no warm up in site. for your planner for tomorrow, here is a look by midday, only 33 degrees, what we are talking, and for new years, if you are headed out new years eve, bundle up. only clear and cold in the tens, the teens, maybe into the low 20's, in a couple of places. here is the fox5 accuweather seven day forecast for you. not much after break temperature wise, take a look, right across the board. we've got

>> this is fox5 local news at 6:00. >> and we do begin tonight with breaking news, this coming to us from northern virginia. >> an fbi raid happening right now in residential area in sterling. we want to get right to our cory kauffman live at the scene. cory, what's going on? >> hey, guys, yes, just finding out information right as we're getting it to you, bringing it it to you. so we're here in the neighborhood of courtyard square in sterling, and the house in question hine me here, looks like townhome complex, right here, this is rather large complex. and it is the one that our camera is zoomed into. this is the unit in question. we are hearing reports of fbi activity, and that fbi activity is report of a search warrant being served. now the fbi is confirming court authorized law enforcement activity. they would not tell us any moriarty point. so, here's what we know. we've seen f.b.i. agents come
