walking across the street. now, take a look at what the scene looked like earlier before that metro transit police vehicle was towed away. still unclear what led up to this accident. what we know is that a metro transit police officer and k-9 were driving north on cane highway before 1:00 this afternoon and we do not know where they were going but we're told they're not res responding to a call. however, when they approach the intersection of chads ford road near the brandywine shopping center investigators state officer 12rubg an adult male believed to be walking -- crossing the street. we are told that the man did not survive. however, his name has not yet been released. the officer and his k-9 involved were not hurt. again, still unclear what happened here. how fast the officer was driving, but i can tell you it does appear there was no crosswalk. no crosswalk at this particular intersection. and so right now, back out here live, northbound lanes

are shut down. traffic is being sdi verityed into the shopping center, brandywine shopping center that's how folks are getting a round. southbound direction is moving well and it should not be too much longer for the northbound direction to remain closed they're trying to open it up soon. you're trying to avoid the area now. anjali hemphill, "fox5 local news". >> and prince george county police investigating their first homicide of the year. it happened this morning inside a home off 38 place in brentwood section of country and investigators say a man stabbed a woman in the home after an argument and she later died at a hospital. the suspect was taken into customers dixt investigators believed other people were inside the home at the time of the stabbing and family and neighbors say the couple had a child together. and it's very hard to get to the trust of the people especially they're not going to look for help. they try to manage themselves with families and friends. but there's no place where this family can can go and get

some help. >> for now police have not released name of the suspect or name of the woman that d died. >> and in the district more than a dozen people are out of a home this new year after an apartment building went up in flames. the fire broke out before 3 in an apartment building in south east. one firefighter suffered minors injuries after falling through the floor and no one else there was hurt. and in northern virginia an elderly man found dead after a fire in a row house around 4:30 firefighters got the call to columbia and annandale after putting out the fire they found 94-year-old lewis spencer and fairfax county firefighters giving tips how to avoid them. >> we have had a couple of fires that were calls by not properly discarded ashes from fireplaces. we are supposed to make sure you keep ashes approximately 20 feet away from home and put them inside metal container not a paper bag or plastic bag

smoke detectors. those are sealed in baties. this is not only a new lawsuit but a good idea. smoke detectors with sealed in batteries last a decade meaning you don't have to swap out batties every year. it's a good thing to remember. also in maryland, 2017, pretty wig year in cyber hacks. personal information being stolen. that's why starting today, maryland businesses are required by a new law to protect the personal information of employees. customers and former employees. so from now on, maryland businesses you get -- you will be required to notify individuals in a more timely manner. virginia also has pretty new laws going into effect. one involves birth control. for today, a woman in virginia that want todd buy birth control could get enough to last a few months. that changes today when a woman can now purchase a supply of birth control that will last up to 1 year. now on the totally opposite end of spectrum. 2018 is bringing

coin collectors in virginia. as of today, thanks to a new law in the commonwealth, coin collectors will no longer have to pay a sales tax on transactions more than 1,000. and another sales tax on gold, silver, platinum, that's now extended in virginia until 202 2. also we were wanting to remind you we've ben telling you a lot about folks going to property tax offices around the area to payoff property taxes before 2017 ended and we're told that's deductible from federal taxes they may only be accepted in limited circumstances. we'll have to wait and find out more about that one. >> there's a lot as we say a lot to unpack with all these new laws, thanks, fitz. >> it was a cold new year's eve and doesn't look like a reprieve in 2018. >> no live look for you right now. it's a beautiful shot. gary mcgrady is here to break all of this down four. happy new year, my friend. >> as long as you look at it. >> doesn't feel a
