>> ahead this morning new year in the nation's capital what does the mayor have in store for 2018. we sat down with her 30 minutes ago. what she told us is coming you. >> let's continue to talk about it. the weather it is freezing out there. right? and those freezing temperatures really are starting to take toll on the region. we've actually been talking about school delays this mor morning. water main breaks. icy rescues. and there likely be plenty more in the days ahead. in fact tuck is back now with our first check of the forecast because by the end of the week it will get even colder. >> what. >> that's hard to believe. isn't it. >> yes. we don't -- yeah. feels like it been cold enough. sure enough holly by friday and saturday our daytime highs may not get out of the teens for much much of the area and this there's just no end to this relentless cold here any time soon. in fact loo looking long term i think monday the next chance most of the area gets above the freezing mark. all right. let's get it to. let's dive on in. cold temps to start your day. up to 15 at reagan national. that's a

the past hour. most of the area is at least in the low teens. let's see ten in winchester still quite chilly. 12 in hagerstown. 12 in fredericksburg. culpeper our cold spot at 1 degrees. very very cold temperatures out there. again we've got wind chills which are taking another ten or 15 degrees off those actual air temperatures it feels like zero to five right now for most of the area. should be a sunny and bright day it will not be a warm day. daytime highs in the mid to upper 20s but it will be a dry day which is good news. anything that tried to move in today would bring us nothing but snow and we might have little of that in the forecast by late wednesday night early thursday. more on the timing on that and the possibilities with that system coming up but your forecast for this afternoon, unrei lening cold. 28 your daytime high. the good news there should be plenty of sunshine at least when you're looking out your window it will look like a nice day. >> tuck, later in the week when we have the single digit lows is that pushing record terri

still well above record lows? >> certainly the possibility. i think the best chances for breaking records will be out at dulles. some of the records at national or here in d.c. are pretty extreme like minus 12s and minus 14s stuff we did back in the late 1800's. local records by this weekend yeah. >> bun up. >> 9:04 is the time. we're not the only ones dealing with old man winter the frigid bone chilling temperatures continue to playing much of the united states. topeka kansas minus 14 monday. 17 below in annapolis. and 30 below in montana. anyone dealing with those temperatures would unlike toll find sympathy in northern north dakota. the town of mine nut was 40 degrees below zero. in michigan frozen track cribbed to delays on amtrak train, wisconsin polar bear plunge was the coldest to date at negative 20 degrees. look at this. >> are you kidding me?

>> was that person standing in the water to high five everybody else that came out. >> how is that possible another plump in indiana was canceled because of the chill. out west frozen branches brought down power lines leaving thousands of people without heat. the national weather service says most regions will see a warmup midweek. then back down to freezing temperatures going into the weekend. >> i know they did the pole bare plunges in the chesapeake yesterday. if any of you did it let us know how you're doing today. got to be adrenaline rush when you're jumping in there. a day later wrap myself in warm blankets. >> my heart stops on memorial weekend because the pool water is still too cold. check this out as well. a daring overnight water rescue in upper montgomery county. this happened in the town of boyds on west old baltimore road near shiloh church road. police say a car crashed into the waters of 10-mile creek three people had to be rescued. as you can imagine the creek water was very cold. ems crews evaluated all three passengers. thankfully, everyone was

here at home, major problems though at a southeast middle school. also blamed on the extreme cold. water main break flooded kramer middle school overnight and also sparked a gas leak. crews have been on the scene all morning long. and so has our melanie alnwick much she joins us now with all the details. so, mel, what's the update now? >> reporter: good morning. they are still really in the thick of this here in terms of the amount of work that needs to be done to repair all of the damage caused by this cold weather. you can see we've got a little bit of idle right now getting ready to get back started again. the dc water crews -- i'm sorry the washington gas crease crews digging here in front of the school all night. if you thread the needle there in between the flagpole you can see the valves there. we had a gas leak that apparently was caused by all of the water in the basement so you see those basement level win windows. that is where the basement is and the boiler room and apparently a lot of water got into the

part of the gas problem. what we understand several feet of water in the basement caused by a burst pipe. initially we thought there may have been water main break because there is water main break across the street. i think mike we can probably see those dc water crews there across the street trying to get started on that particular water main break we were told was on 18 street between w and p. we thought initially that water main break had something to do with the water flooding the basement in the school. that was interior burst pipe something that d.c. water had been reminding folks about that this could definitely be something that would happen in these very very cold temperatures. so a lot of work to be done here. fortunately for the 193 degrees students that go to this middle school, today is the last day of winter break for them. but i got to tell you given what i'm told as far as the damage here, i just don't know yet whether they can count oncoming back to school

whether d.c. schools is going to have to come up with different plan for them. so that is the latest here from southeast. i'm melanie alnwick, fox5 local news. >> melanie, thank you. checking the morning briefing now first up al franken's last day in the us senate. the minnesota democrat announced his resignation last month after multiple women accused of him of sexual misconduct. franken has not announced what he will do next, but he plans to remain in the public eye. minnesota, lieutenant governor tina smith will be sworn as his replacement tomorrow. president president trump back here in washington this morning after returning from florida last night. and he begins his second year in office 2018 confronting iran and trying to build on some of last year's momentum in congress. >> the president just preparing to sit down with republican leaders in congress now to come up with a game plan for 2018 and position themselves for the mid term elections. president trump arriving back at the white house last night ignoring questions from reporters. but he wasn't holding back on

criticizing pakistan and am acknowledging growing protests in iran which threaten the regime there. the president seemed to you were the protesters on writing, along with human rights, the wealth of iran is being looted. time for change. he has long railed against the iran nuclear deal struck by the obama administration. >> so what does he do next? that's the big question. who you does he support these protests because there have been protests in the past during the obama administration, and they didn't go anywhere 2018 begins with big questions for congress, too. the president had a big win with tax reform in december. can he follow it up with something else? perhaps a deal on infrastructure spending or immigration. there is the looming threat of a government shut down after congress kicked the can down the road last year. >> i think this could be a very good year for the economy, and year in which the american people take, you know, assessment of this administration and this congress and say, you know what, these folks are getting results for the american people. >> and many democrats are salivating

in mid term elections. >> republicans have problem. they're going into the mid terms. they're approval rating wouldn't melt an ice cube. so they're looking at a blood bath in 2018. >> and everything for republicans will be more difficult in congress this year because of the math. in the senate they will have just one vote majority. >> the new year's always a time oh reflect on the accomplishments of the past year and the work needed going in the next year that's happening in the halls of the wilson building right here in d.c. last hour d.c. mayor muriel bowser stopped by to talk about the cities accomplishments and touched on the grade fixing scandal at ballou high school. >> it's a very serious issue. we take it very seriously. our office of the state superintendent is conducting evaluation, investigating all of the allegations at balloon you will of a our policies citywide and so we expect that report in i think two weeks and so that will give us a good road map of the things that need to be fi fixed.

putting some money where their mouth is. >> and miss america found its night leadership and former winner and former fox news host who led the charge against harass many at the cable net network. porgie tales on both stories allison seymour is here now with more. good morning allison. >> good morning. happy new year to all of you. 2017 looking back was an explosive year. it was full of sexual harassment scandals and hollywood as well as in politics right here in washington, of course, and that led to the me too campaign on social medial women around the world coming forward to share their stories of sexual harassment with the hash tag me foo on social media and hundreds of women in holly holded wood are saying enough is enough. reece witherspoon, shondra rhymes, jennifer aniston just a few of the hundreds of celebrity who's have come together to form an anti harassment coalition called times up. they say the initiative is an extension of the me too campaign. they launched times up yesterday with an open letter in the new york times vowing support for

times up is dedicated to confronting abusive power and promoting workplace equality. the initiative will provide legal defense fund for that will advocate for legislation fighting workplace harassment. after monday' as announcement other members of the movement took to social media to spread the word, the initiative has the support of hundreds again of celebrities just to name a few more. natalie portman, carrie washington, eva longoria, america ferrara rasheed at a jones. jj abrams and justin timberlake also voiced their support for this movement. meantime, another big announcement for powerful women came out this week. the miss america organization has named former fox news anchor gretchen carlson the new chairwoman for the pat jent's board of directors. this mark the first time a former pageant winner had as served in this role there she is years ago. carlsonwon that pageant back in 1989. three other past miss america winners are joining her on the board. the old ceo

you might remember after sending sexist o males about former couldn't kess taints. in a tweet gretchen carlson says he's honored to move the iconic miss america program forward. carlson left fox news back in 2016 and later selled with the cable network after file a sexual harassment lawsuit against news -- fox news c edge o roger ales. such a number of sexual assault and harass many accusations come to go light this year many people are pl planning to wear black to the golden globe award. remember this whole situation where i forget her name in this moment. >> rose mcgowan came out and called them hypocrites saying you're wearing black it's not enough to say just wear the black you need to macaco vocal stand too and all of this. we have yet to see what happens. >> times up hash tag and movement happening. >> right. >> i hope that that does help because you do need women behind uh-uh need the support. for lot of people they can't afford lawyers. >> i was going to say providing deal defense fund for regular women is huge. >> that's right.

♪ >> 9:21 is our time on this tuesday morning. that means it's time for us to check in with caitlin and see what some of the other stories are making headlines this morning. hey, caitlin. >> good morning. first up on this tuesday morning, openly transgender people can now enlist in the u.s. armed forces. that took effect yesterday. the main requirement is certification from a medical provider. verifying that the individual must have gone 18 months without clinically significant distress or impair many. supporters say it's a landmark moment for american equality. they also believe this move will deliver much needed boost in enroll many. all right. u.s. customs system outage affected airports across the country left

hours as many were just trying to get home on new year's day. this is all yesterday. spokeswoman for the agency says the two hour delay began around 7:30 p.m. last night. customs and border protection officers were forced to process arriving passengers using backup procedures at some airports. the outage is not believed to have been malicious in nature. we'll stay with the flying scene here. we are learning new details this morning about one of the families that died in plane crash in costa rica over the weekend. the steinberg family that died in the crash once lived in the dc area. bruce and irene steinberg and their three sons william, zachary and matthew died in the crash. about 15 years ago the family lived in north potomac. they were on board a single engine charter plane that crashed shortly after take off. another family from florida along with an american tour guide and two crew members also died in the crash. no word yet though on what caused the plane to go down. with that being

also was the safest flying year ever. last year saw a huge increase in the number of people flying and a sharp decline in deadly plane crashes in 2017. ten commercial passenger and cargo airplanes crashed with a total of 44 death. that's better though than the five-year average of 17 crashes with nearly 500 deaths. i guess it is all about improvement. and finally this morning, new proof that time travel really is possible. i love this story. hawaiian airlines flight has passengers leaving in the past after it took off in 2018 but landed in 2017. the flight was scheduled to depart new zealand before midnight on december 31st for honolulu but unexpected ten minute delay meant it took off at 12:0 off am on january 1st, 2018. hoo lulu is 23 hours behind auction land which meant that eight hour flight landed them at 10am on new year's eve. you want add do over on day you got to go from auction land to

done. they rolled on, rolled on, to the national championship game going head to wed it clemson in the sugar bowl a chance for the two teams to play again and alabama took the lead with a pair of touchdowns from defensive players in just 13 seconds. alabama went on to win 24-six. now they're favored to take championship title. but who would they play against they knew before the game started actually the game kind of overlapped because it went to double overtime but it will be georgia. now this game was amazing to watch if you were just a fan of football in general. if you had no invest in many either team it was a fun game. very close game against oklahoma rose bowl went into double overtime for the first time in history. over hun hundred rose bowls had been played. never had overtime game before. oklahoma had a chance to win it with a field goal. it was block. georgia on the run the winning touchdown the final score 54-48. they'll take on alabama now for the national title game in georgia next month. because it was already scheduled to be played in atlanta

southern maryland, lower eastern shore you guys are at highest risk here for some notable snow. and then that storm is really going to bomb out off the coast, and push in winds on friday morning up to -- get this, up to 40 miles an hour winds looking at wind chills even in dc perhaps minus 20, minus 25 by friday. >> yes. by friday morning. it's going to be just extraordinary cold around here. no advisories locally at this hour. although i know we've got viewers down across lower eastern shore you guys are under a winter storm watch as this storm needs to be watched very carefully wednesday night and thursday. otherwise we'll keep the cold around right through the wee weekend. we will warm it up by monday. with a chance believe it or not of a little rain with temperatures in the mid 40 he is we got to get there. several days of hold ahead of us. make sure you don't leave your pets outside, and that you are taking all precautions if you'll be outside for any period of time. all right. maureen and holly toss it back over to you. >> we're already

for him so his work, his ability to work with others is actually decreasing not increasing. but 218 looks to be for the most part for the united states a very victorious year. so i think we've got as a whole have a pretty nice path ahead of us. >> i think in the news specifically we've seen obviously a lot of racial divide in the country. >> yes. >> we've also seen the me too movement. >> yes. >> all of that. do you see any healing going on on either of those fronts? >> on the me too -- mother guide, mother earth however you wish to speak to the feminine element will gain greater speed, greater strength, greater understanding. the only altercations or difficulties i saw were in mid april and august specifically and it felt like it was very publicized. what i couldn't see was i don't think it's the me too movement but it does feel like
