we're cautiously optimistic. we might hit 33 degrees today and at least one or two spots will get above the freezing mark for the first time in 2018. storm system taking shape. i looking at video just a couple minutes ago of it snowing right now in tallahassee, florida. that's extraordinary. this storm system winter storm all the way down into florida and georgia. along the coastal communities of south carolina, north carolina their winter storm warnings. we've got winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings locally as well to our south and east. southern maryland now under winter weather advisory and a winter storm warning we're loolooking at the heavier snow s going to be late tonight and early tomorrow morning we'll get light snows across the area it will stick. so again with these very cold temperatures we've had so far this year, what falls will st stick. i would expect there will be some travel challenges tomorrow morning leave it at that and we might have to tweak the snowfall forecast a little bit either direction. there you go that's our early call. 24ou

around here tomorrow morning. again it will be light amounts but it will stick. 33 today. plenty more details on the expected snow and the expected wind chills around here by friday and saturday coming up guys. back to you. >> thank you tucker. deep freeze is causing issues as you know across the region especially for schools. so far we've told you about burst pipes, no heat, bus issues. fox5's annie yu in fairfax this morning continuing our team coverage. good morning to you. hope you're trying to stay warm. >> reporter: i'm fine, mo. it's called layers. i'm just worried about the students that had to be out here for a long time. you know, teenagers they don't dress as warmly as us old folks do. but needless to say, i mean it is very very cold out here. we're talking temps in the teens this early morning. the it feels a little better now with the sun out. but imagine there are still kids standing at bus stops waiting for their buses to get to them. you mentioned the heat not working. that was over in montgomery county yesterday. some heating issues at some schools including richard montgomery high

we're told that this morning there are no issues that they are doing just fine. now here in fairfax county the big issue was the buses and so buses like behind me here we sort of saw it all play out early this morning. these are the buses that have been sitting out much more across the bus lots in the county they were basically sitting out over the last two weeks during the winter break and so clearly with the frigid temperatures they didn't get any jump starts or any engines weren't, you know, turned on over the last two weeks. so they just decided not to start some of them and some buses even broke down along the route. so that is the big issue here in fairfax county it left hundreds of students waiting outside in the cold yesterday for up to an hour. this morning we can tell that you we already saw problems just after 5:00 o'clock i want to show you the snapshot of delays in the county right now at 9:00 o'clock. there are buses headed to the schools that either broke down or they're experiencing pro problems. most are delayed by either 15 to 20 minutes. you can see some are delayed by more than 30 minutes. you've got

belvedere elementary and franconia those three were just added to the list of these delays. this list is far fewer than yesterday, though, out of 808700 bus routes in the country work hundred were impacted yesterday. so this a much shorter list, but still you're talking about, you know, kids waiting for their buses outside in this cold temperature. we have a call into the school system to see what they're doing to make sure they don't experience similar problem in the week, you know, tomorrow we're talk something snow. and keep in mind, they do have just over 1600 buses in that are fleet. the second largest in the country. so perhaps they were able to swap some buses out but we did see mechanic out here this morning fixing problems as they arise. he was replacing batteries, and we're told that maintenance crews are at different bus lots across the country as well to help out. that's the very latest from falls church, annie yu, fox5 local news. >> annie thank you very much. i know this doesn't make annie or anybody else feel better we're not in it alone the rest of the cup tree also dealing with bitter cold

parts of the northeast saw arctic blasts and snow and snow and sleet yesterday as many people were back on the roads after the new year holiday. outside buffalo, which is snow central these days, heavy snow and whiteot conditions caused a massive pile up on i-90. dozens of cars and tractor trailers involved even more vehicles pushed off the road into the snow. icy roads almost put a dallas area police officer in the hospital. look at this. scary moment here just trying to get out of the way and going too slip right there. >> oh. wow. >> and somehow that car was able to just, just miss that officer. officer responding to another accident at the time. subzero temperatures in chicago push that city towards the longer snap in decades. chunks of ice flowing down the partially frozen chicago river. >> whose button is bigger. president trump fired off tweet to north korean dictate kim jong-un with some of the highest stakes possible a nuclear he can change. the president's latest volley on twitter set off new concerns about a

12 now in quantico. 23 in leonardtown. we're thinking temperatures will at least for an hour or two get above 32 later today. storm taking shape i was just looking of video down snow in hal tallahassee florida. extra or. winter storm warnings extend along the carolinas including the eastern shore here in our area and then up towards long island and the cape. this is going to be one big storm. it's going to undergo a process we called bombo genesis very rapid deepening and main effect for us will be fringe snows but a lot of wind and a lot of wind chills around here by late thursday and friday. there's our storm system taking shape earl tomorrow morning. the worse of it will be to our north they're expecting blizzard conditions we will get fringe snows here and then heavier snows as you get down towards salsbury and ocean city as that storm passes to our east. want to quickly show you the advisories. this was undate the this mor morning. winter storm warning maybe now four to 8-inches maybe higher totals in spots to our south and

city and now we've got a winter weather advisory issued for saint mary's county and calvert county and i got to -- i'll be honest with you. the criteria will be met here for the winter weather advisories to be extended north and west. don't be surprised if we don't see some winter weather advisories up into the immediate washington area little later today. how much snow we looking at? not lot but r he been what falls will stick. sometimes we get these small nuisance storms. but an inch can cause a lot of problems. that potential is there with cold temperatures, and then you can see the higher amounts to the south and east. more like two to four for southern maryland and more like four to eight there as you get down towards ocean city. so maybe we'll get great scenes from the boardwalk of ocean city tomorrow. as that storm is really roaring off the coast. there's your seven day forecast. had he today. the other tower that i just didn't get time to talk bout wind chills and extreme bitter cold friday and saturday. we can have wind chills maybe minus ten, minus 20 for parts of our region by late thursday and early friday. so what does fall will stick arou

right here. frozen pipes, faulty heating systems can cause serious and expensive problems during frigid weather. bob barnard live in beth to show us how to minimize the damage during the worse of winters. i'm all ears here. a lot of us live in older homes. you have pipes that may be exposed. do tell. what should we be doing. >> reporter: pvc or old copper piping, wssc which is the water authority here in montgomery and in prince george's county tells us they've been getting a lot of calls from people who pipes burst and side their home. they're often by an outside window here. so couple things they suggest. you can have the water in your faucets at a trickle and that keep the water flowing through the pipes. also keep your thermostat at least 55 degrees or better and then if you have a cabinet underneath the sing here, open it up it actually exposes those pipes in there to the warmth of the room which will also protect those pipes as

you know, we were with pete piringer of montgomery county fire in the 8:00 o'clock hour, and he was mentioning that, you know, they've had calls because some people leave their ovens doors open, let that help heat the house on these frigid cold nights especially. candles are also a no-no. do not and we've had fatalities here in montgomery county in the past decade or so where people left candles on all night burning. that's a no-no as well. it's not going to heat your home and if you lose power, you need candles, keep them on only while you're awake and then blow them out at night. of course if you have a fire whether it's gas or wood burning natural fireplace it does put out carbon monoxide so you have to be careful of that and pete was telling us some of the modern construction it's not using like a brick fireplace and chimney, that it's basically an insert and sometimes people are overwhelming them with too much heat and using them too often. and overdoing those and then you'll create a fire situation up the chute as the

i've been to most recently the smoke alarms alerted people they've gotten out. >> reporter: and that is a new law taking effect just this month. your smoke alarms have to have a ten-year battery in them as w well. so good working smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector. also, if you have a furnace, a water heater, space heater, keep everything away from them, guys, because as pete mentioned and the fire officials around the region will tell you is people will leave inadvertently loo leave a rag on the fireplace or clothing and materials around your water heat, your furnace a space heater. that can be combustible, and again, it seems like a lot of common sense things but we cover these fires, these emergencies and often it's that scenario that someone did something they probably new better of and also didn't have a working smoke alarm, guys. just some advice as it's very cold and we're trying to keep warm inside. be careful.
