most schools in the area are either closed or delayed. many of them closed. the federal government opening late. and again we're not the only ones feeling the effects the snow has been falling from florida to new england. that means major travel delays all across the east coast. so far thousands of flights have been canceled. amtrak service has been canceled or delayed on the northeast corridor. >> we have live team coverage this morning across the region. corey coffin is in ocean city the hardest hit. bob checking conditions around the eastern shore, annie down in saint mary's county and mike is in old town. then there's melanie, too. melanie is making her way around montgomery county. first though we'll go live to tucker because he's got more on the storm's track, snow totals, wind chills that are coming our way. tucker the snow might be ending but the storm is far from over, right. >> you got that right. in fact winds will become the big story. throats snow totals first. if we flip the prompter. hug after the show either way. let's do snow totals first. takoma park half inch. california, maryland, 4-inches and alexandria 1

the beltway we're approaching an inch. further east you get into prince george's county and then out towards the bay it's more like approaching 2-inches and then southern maryland three or 4-inches. so snow totals pretty much on par with what we were expecting early this morning which is great news. 25 now in washington. snow is tapering off here in the city. do want to talk about wind chills. look at that wind north northwest at 25, 26 miles an hour and it feels like nine. unfortunately the feels like the wind chill is going to be feeling like zero maybe minus five, minus ten later today and tonight. we have a wind chill advisory. there's your snow. you can see it tapering off. we are trying to get one little burst dwelling off to our south and west you may get a few more snow showers and snowflakes here in the city and then as we look east here this whole area of snowiness, that's in the a technical term. whole area of precipitation known will continue to march to the east and things will gradually taper off to few flurries by late morning lat

what will not taper off the winds will continue to howl out of the north and north and west as we watch our storm really wrap up. there's the center of circulation much this guy is developing very very rapidly we call it bombo genesis because of that rapid intensification. what that means is, there's lot of wind available and a lot of moisture and you can see all of that being translated along thee states here. we got blizzard warnings for most parts of new jersey as you get into up new england up towards boston maine where the worst and heaviest of the snow will be. looking at a foot plus up there. we're going to be look at a lot of wind. we'll get sunshine this afternoon, but we'll have a lot of wind. quickly want to show you wind chill adviser f you're going out today, it is not going to be a warm afternoon. it's going to feel like zero or negative five, negative ten with those winds blowing this afternoon make sure if you're going out to sweep the driveway or do little shoveling that you are ready for cold afternoon guys. coming up just a minute. i want to mention the very cold temperatures tonight. with that snow cover, even here in the city, we may have single digits for the weekend. so make sure the furnace is working here we're in for

all right. coming up we'll look at some more snow totals and take another look at the radar, guys. back to you. >> thank you tucker barnes. nine cory sool four is the time. the storm is hitting the coast with hurricane strength winds. all morning long if we can flip the prompter, please, thank you very much, we've shown you the blizzard conditions out in ocean city, married, where whipping winds are creating near white out conditions. that's where we find corey coffin whose been out there all morning long. she was standing and getting blown around now she's in the car getting blown around. good morning, corey. >> i don't know if you guys can see the car rocking a bit. but it is. this giant gust of wind coming through actually want to show you right now we're park right in front of some folks unfortunately trying to get out. they are pretty stuck. we can definitely see what it is is that some parts of the road because of the wind are minimally covered by snow whereas other parts are significantly covered by the berms. so it is kind of difficult to tell what you're going to be driving through and the plows really can't get through it enough quick enough

the plows come through the wind just comes back and dump another layer out on to the roadways. thankfully with our truck we've been ail to get through. but we had to be inside for this live shot right now because our camera is frozen at this moment. i mean the conditions outside are just continuing with whipping wind and the icy -- thank you with the icy cond conditions just through the air it's really making things difficult for visibility. so we've noticed that a lot of people we're hearing first responders getting calls or to a lot of people stuck on the roadways. if you don't have to be on the roadways, try to be off them and try to stay safe out there because of course we've got our first responders who are coming out and risking their own safety as well to help these folks out. guys? >> corey, thank you for that. you stay save yourself it's been treacherous out there in ocean city. equally as bad to some degrees saint mary's county annie has been surveying the scene all morning. annie, it does look more calm behind you but ick still see the plows on the roads covered with snow. qu

>> reporter: yeah, that's right good morning everybody. i can tell you overall that the people of saint mary's county are pretty much enjoying this. we talk to number of penal. they love this kind of stuff. that why they live out here, right? here you go. you have these moments where the wind just picks up and you see all the snow blowing everywhere and so i was talking to the plow crews and they basically told me right now that seems to be the biggest challenges. the wind and this cold because once they plow through, the snow just kind of blows right back on to the roadway and sidewalks now everything is closed here. local governments, the schools, many businesses are closed. these crews have been working since midnight, overnight. they are very tired. i spoke with a rep from the town of leonardtown, and he tells me he's going relieve soon so they can get some rest, they'll have to come back out here and in just a bit. but again the winds creating that challenge they'll be watching fox5 very closely for the latest updates. i can tell you route thee

thank you annie. we're not the only ones dealing with monster snowstorm heading up north i-95 boston is expecting white out conditions today. several inches per hour expected to fall boston's mayor ordering schools closed today. they've asked people to stay off the roads as best they can. hundreds of flights canceled. several of them were on their way to airports in our region. so make sure do you check your flight status if you have plans to fly out today. let's head south now powerful winter storm already pummeled several cities from ice causing problems on roads in texas the storm also hit two iconic southern cities. savannah and charleston reported their heaviest snow in 30 years. parts of florida like tallahassee and port canaveral got a power blast yesterday multiple deaths blamed on the cold in the recent days. if you're stuck inside the first snow day of 2018 you might want to kill some time in the kitchen but first, stay tune because a little later this morning we're sharing some of the top healthy trends for the new year. first, though, our team coverage of the first winter storm

2018. we're in it together. so we'd love to see your pictures that you're taking outside use the #fox5snowday and perhaps we'll share them later. in the men time while the dc region dodged a direct hit from the bomb cyclone, we still picked up enough snow and ice to close and delay schools as well and generally make life a little more difficult. >> our life tomorrow coverage continues with melanie alnwick whose making her way through prince george's and montgomery counties and then mike thomas who is down in old town alexandria. so mike, let's go ahead and start with you. >> reporter: hey, holly. yeah, hey, like you just mentioned a couple minutes ago, pretty mild start for snow event here in d.c. we do have people out and about. we moved up kind of more downtown to get a check of road conditions around the interior town. what we noticed some of these streets like asap here that are residential streets are more covered and they're still kind of snow covered

streets with businesses on them like duke street we just passed. this is prince street that goes vertical here up and down. that's a little bit more clear. so they seem to be starting with the business routes and then moving and to the side streets to get things clear. one thing i absolutely want to stress here that temperatures are going to be dropping tonight in big way. any slush that's kind of left on the street here like this is going to be freeze over rather quick. you'll want to keep that in mind for your sidewalks. you look up and down the street here, residential neighborhoods here in old town alexandria so the sidewalks all covered here. you'll want to clear these off before tonight. because this nice fluffy snow not too hard to move one we get to the evening it will freeze over in big way an lot harder time clearing things because temperatures for most of our neighborhoods not expected to make it out of the teens until we get to sunday afternoon and for some maybe not even until monday afternoon. you notice the flags blowing in the wind here. we just had a gust reagan national which isn't too far up the road 33

wind chill currently sits at 9 degrees. it could be negative 9 degrees by the time we get to free day morning. we've already stressed this. self school districts have already announced they're going to delay tomorrow. prince george's county is one them on two hour delay for friday already due to the extreme cold. as a anne arundel county in mary. i expect that those had pos possiblely be expanded because we do tend to close -- not close but we do tend to delay around here for cold weather. it's been a few years since we've had wind chills at the levels that we're going to see around the region early tomorrow morning much that's the latest here, guys. cleanup getting under way. no more snow is falling right now down here in old town. so, yeah, clean up is underway. watch out for the big freeze tonight. all right. that's the latest from northern virginia. let's send it to melanie alnwick who is in maryland in prince george's county this morning. mel, how things looking up that? >> reporter: hey i got to till, mike, things are looking honestly really really good. we were in montgomery county -- prince george's county. we went to montgomery county, then back to prince george's county and just a

bit of howard counsel tear here until we head east toward laurel see how things are doing there. the worse of it that we saw in all of our travels today was really in the bowie area. once we got into laurel things seemed to be all right and montgomery county looked great by my estimation. even montgomery county did put a snow emergency plan into effect, most of their main roads right now are black pavement. so as you can see here, that's the situation. we're also seeing here right on the border of howard county and prince george's county look at this. really no problems out here on this part of the roadway. it was a little bit dicier early this morning, and, you know, lot of parents wondering, gosh, did they really need to close the schools maybe a two hour delay would have been sufficient? but i know that they always take into consideration what they consider to be the most severe conditions in the entire county. just to make sure that everyone is

they are still having to do some work on the sidewalks and the driveways and the parking lots as well. so that may be one of the things that was taken into consideration when it came to some of the closures. but i know that the road crews have been out we saw them plowing earlier this morning really nothing to plow more kind of pushing some of it out of the way and now, though, it is plows up. it really is just down to salting and sanding some of those spots perhaps it may have frozen over again and i think that's really where we're going to fine the issue is as you get to those refreezes overnight any of this stuff that doesn't dry up during the day and probably will not that's what we'll have the trouble where this roads are slushy then that's going to be icy conditions. but i got to say at least here 9:00 o'clock this morning we've been on the road since 3:00am and this the best we've seen it since we've been going. so looks like we've done a giant loop around and i got to say from our perspective things looking really g

fire and fury inside the trump white house. bannon spoke with a reporter michael wolf who wrote that book among the bombshell claims that president trump didn't want to wint election that bannon told wolf that donald trump, jr., meeting with the group of russians was quote treason us in. the white house says that the president is furious. he's disgusted what they say calling the claims outrageous and completely falls. president trump's lawyer coo accused of bannon of violating confidentiality agreements by speaking with michael wolf the author of that book. local politics now. the at least the state of virginia. virginia state board of elections is breaking the tie today between democratic candidate shelly simmons and republican incumbent dave yancy. both vying for the seat to represent the 94th district that's in newport news, vir virginia. state officials will physically pull the winners name out of a bowl. the out come will determine who controls the house of delegates. they're going old school with this one. if simmons within the house would be split 50/50.

northern california. the magnitude 4.5 quake hit the san francisco area just after 5:00 thyrsi this morning the center 2 miles from berkeley. officials say the quake wasn't expected to cause major damage but they did warn there's always a possibility of some minor damage to older structures in that area. okay, everybody who went out and played the lottery yesterday. the bad news, you didn't within the powerball. the good news nobody did. the mega millions and powerball jackpots swelled to an estimated $968 million. no winning ticket was sold in last night's pore ball drawing. the jackpot now at 550 million for that one with the next drawing on saturday night. meanwhile, friday's mega millions jackpot stands now at $418 million. can you imagine? and finally, good news for pizza lovers. apparently eating pizza for breakfast isn't a bad thing at least that's according to food expert jason bull. he says eating pizza for breakfast is the way to go.

spanned out across the area he's at the eastern shore they got hit pretty good. bob out standing in your field. >> reporter: yeah hey there maureen. yeah, we're at the barnyard fruit and vegetable stand which is normally a business is he place when the weather isn't like this. you can see there are some snow drifts that are about a foot deep. really there's just maybe two to 3-inches covering this area. we're just a few miles north of easton this is route 50 you see those are the southbound lanes heading toward easton. the closer lanes are heading this way. we have seen some mouse come through. but snow is sticking to the road surfaces and we'll wait here and we'll see these cars come by. everybody pretty much driving at speed but if you even tap on the brakes you'll lose control or if you're going too fast to make a turn off the roadway you can get yourself in trouble. as they go past i want to show you video tape from a couple of hours ago. this was on westbound 50 before the bay bridge. this was an 18 wheeler that

control there and went off the side of the road there was one of those large tow truck companies that came out and got this guy off the road. so there was really no damage to the rig except that it went off the road. maryland governor larry hogan declaring a state of emergency here on the eastern shore and throughout the southern counties of maryland. there is still a 40 miles an hour speed restriction on the chesapeake bay bridge, and 18 child wheelers that have empty trailers are not allowed to cross the bridge. we did it at dawn this morning right before dawn and then after dawn crossing the bridge was a little dicey because it is wi windy. although maryland department of transportation officials yesterday had warped there was a chance they were going to close the bay bridge today because of these winds. that has not happened. as far as bwi, we know there are a lot of flight delays and some cancellations to northern ci cities. just kind of what we're experiencing here. what we kind of expected and are clearly still

in northwest d.c. the latest on our winds want it feels like out there. you look great. how is it feeling. >> i don't think so. it's like this the whole time. tucker, now that we're out here daylight we can kind of assess what's going on. i'm not so much worried about people driving on wisconsin more the people walking. it is very tough to be outside with the winds and the cold. so obviously snow is less of an issue right now. the sidewalks primarily are fine. you know, d.c. they salted, they got the roads ready, they treated. tonight might be a concern because of anything freezing over. however, one way that the wind works in your benefit is that it dries out pavements and dries out the roads super fast. when you have winds gusting over 30 miles an hour as we do right now, you've got pretty much dry roads and so that will help prevent a lot of the freezing for the overnight hours. because even though do you have some of those puddles right along the curb side there, yes, that could freeze, you can have slippery spots. that's an issue, of course, your first steps out the door and everything but the roads are

and wind will continue to dry them through today and into the overnight. now, being outside as a humanity wind is not pleasant. winds gusting over 30 miles an hour. wind chills right now in the single digits but wind chill advisory will take effect for the whole area at 10:00 o'clock tonight. as we get into the overnight hours you'll see the wind chill levels drop below zero. we've had several days of that earlier this week, but it's going to be even colder i think by this time tomorrow morning where we're talking about wind chills on the order of ten below zero plus. or minus. depend how you look at that. so as we go through the rest of the day it's turning. more wind and the cold. that's the latest out here. tucker i'll send it back to you in studio. >> let's show the show. starting to fill back in again. not quite done with it the last of it though. ing see the western edge still snowing off to the east and to the south we checked in with annie down in southern maryland. still slowing snowing pretty good down there and across the bay. this whole event will wind down for us pretty quick we'll start to get clearing skies later this afteoo

you know, jessica i wanted to ask you because i was reading about you, you know, researching for this role and everything and so you had this preconceived notion of monthly particularly you actually met her, right. >> you know what you read in the headlines maybe you read her book or not. but she's not necessarily what the media made her out to be. do you feel like when people go and see this movie they're going to have that -- that difference in opinion that you did upon meeting her and for people that have never met her, what are their thoughts when they walk away? >> yeah, absolutely. you know i kind of bought into this perception that the media, you know, this idea of molly the media gave me. based on what she looks like, based on the interviews that i had seen some journalists not being very nice to her then when i got to know her, i realized there was a lot more than meets the eye. holly is merely blaming a game laid out for her to play. and trying to find success in an environment where women are vall

ability. i absolutely misjudged her and when i sat down and talked with her i realized, um that's correct the film, of course it's aaron sorkin i should have known this before. the film is much more than the story of one woman it's a story of all women. >> sure. >> and it was incredibly moving to me. >> aaron i know for you this is your directorial debut and sitting next to jessica who work with christopher nolan and other big named directors. was there little bit of intimidation in that? >> a little bit of intimidation yeah. i was and still am scared to death of jessica. >> good. good. >> you know when i met with jessica, um, i already knew that i wanted they are play the part but i was meeting with her to see if this actress who has worked with christopher nolan and catherine bigelow and terscottand malik would be willo

blair perkins join a life with a sneak peek at what fans can expect. good morning to both of you go good morning. >> good morning guys. >> anyone of you can take this question. it works you're pretty much trying to main up taken your supremacy every week, is that how it works? >> yeah. bakely, contenders come in. they sing for the judges. if they get four yeses from the judges they get to pick which one of the four they battle and then the audience decide if the contender boat the member of the four. if so, they take their seat. so it's a battle every single week. >> and you two were hand picked crew that's going to try to maintain their spots. how did that happen. blair, i'll let you take that question. >> um, we were bakely scouted out some people, um, did showcases and some people were just found, and um, basically, they chose us to be the starting four which is an mazing opportunity. >> yeah. >> and we just got to stay in

>> indeed do you. staying in those seats do you get to sing the songs you want to see or do they challenge you something out of your comfort zone and that's how they hope to unseat you? >> you don't actually know what the challenger is going to sing or perform, and um, actually even the four we didn't really get to see each other perform until it was time for show time. so we do choose our own songs each week and we have help from, um, different people in the team but, um, yeah. >> so at the end of it all what is the ultimate prize? is it recording contract or something along those hines? >> yeah, so we become i heart radio. radio play and all the promotion that i heart gives and the song we release is a colab before the of project between ourselves and all four judges which i'm sure as you can imagine is a huge having those kind of names backing your project and endorsing it. it's kind of like a recipe for success.

>> yeah, huge prize on the line and kind of it gives the artist the sustain ability every kind of artists want and that elevation to create a career out of the show as opposed to quick rise to fame. >> were you in any way kind of star struck when you came and you've got diddy, you've got khaled, meghan trainor and charlie walk. you've got these powerhouses who are the judges for this. were you in any way intimidated or star struck when you first came on and saw this was going to be the panel of judges that you have to perform for? >> well, when i found out i was excited, um, for the panelists but during the show we didn't get to see them until it was actually time to perform. but we've been doing so much work so there was no time to be star truck you had to get in there and nail it there was no time for any of that. it was really about being on your a game. >> indeed it was. i know a lot of people are saying look i've seen these singing competition shows before. why should i watch this one tonight
