ground temperatures will be lagging much it's been so cold for so long last couple of weeks some of our, you know, coldest two week periods in history and that ground is just not going to warm up a whole lot quickly, and it looks like we'll get sleet and light rain on top of it that could cause icing issues this afternoon. 24 now in washington. winds out of the south here at 9:00. we're trying to pump the warmer temperatures in and i think as far as air temperatures we may get those into the low to mid 30s this afternoon. the issue is going to be ground temperatures. we just looking at some of the regional roadways and for the most part, they're in the teens and low 20s, and they won't get a chance to warm up as quickly. so, although we're not expecting a lot in the way of wintry precipitation and potential for light rain, even little bit we all know what happens with even a little bit of light rain when it gets a chance to freeze on the surface thing ice up pretty quick that's a concern. again the timing i would say generally afternoon if you're out to the west and then in the immediate washington area by one, 2:00 o'clock today. we'll start to see this light rain and sleet 96 move in it will be with us through the

>> reporter: hey, good morning. the good news here they are closing this hole up. you can see the da damaged pipe that they've taken out and hopefully this one is one they don't have to come back to. especially during this recent cold snap. wssc is working about 80 active breaks. 28 currently being repaired but at least 50 right now are holding. 16 more need to be inspected. now here on bach avenue in fort washington in the neighborhoods flowing downhill this is where that massive stream of water let's show it to you from yesterday when our crews were here on the scene caused a lot of damage. we had in fact a lot of water that went into basements

.flowed downhill and iced over. d.c. water says it's had 140 plus breaks since the beginning of december. the major the of those in the last two weeks. we know this happens. it just seems like because we've had such a severe cold snap and it's lasted for so long that is why all these water authorities say they're just really having trouble staying on top of all of them like i mentioned at the top. 50 of them holding here in wssc fairfax water also says it currently has about 23 active water main breaks all of those just

live in fort washington, melanie alnwick, fox5 local news. >> mel, thank you. 9:05 is the time. the deep freeze is also extended howard's winter break. under grad students were supposed to return to school today but frozen pipes in several buildings caused heating issues and steam damage. emergency repairs are underway. right now only four of nine dorm buildings have reliable heat. some of the buildings could be closed for a month. under grads now won't start the new semester until next tuesday, january 1 16th. graduate programs are expected to resume today. howard students had a heads up. parents and in fairfax county little warning before officials closed school today. taking a better safe than sorry approach with the freezing rain that's headed our way and our bob barnard is in fairfax county with more. so how is this school closing going over there, bob? >> reporter: you know mixed reactions, guys. some think it's a smart thing being safe for the children. others say come on, get the kids in school it's fine right now. we'r

in fairfax. you've got a lot of plows here. salt trucks. this is what they're loading up with this morning. this is just some of the salt here that's going to be put out on the roadways this morning after the rush hour. these are trucks that have already loaded up they're getting directions these are contractors getting directions from v to the where to go. what they're basically going to do is hit the bridges and overpasses because the rest of of the road surface have already been treated want to show you video tape from before dawn this morning. as these trucks were being loaded with the salt. again, vdot saying most of the major roadways in northern virginia were pre treated on friday and it lasted over the weekend so the roads are ready. fairfax county schools are concerned as are allow don't county schools with what may come this afternoon on these roads if this wintry mix falls and as it's predicteed to sticks to the road surface creates very slick and treacherous conditions at the end o

i don't know. >> back to the original story i'm apple would like infants to have phones. >> exactly. >> i'm sure. we've been telling you about this nasty weather heading our way. let's check in with tucker barnes to fine out exactly when we might start expecting this rainfall that's supposed to freeze on freezing pavements. >> early this afternoon is the timing on it. here's the latest with the thoughts on the wintry mix. the actual air temperatures may get above 32 for a time think afternoon warmer air moving in that's the overall weather process taking place the ground temperatures have been so cold lately ground temperatures in the teens and low 20's. anything we get falling from the sky will likely freeze on those untreated roads and sidewalks and driveways, et cetera. and we are looking at the potential for a slippery afternoon commute that include people coming home from school. literally it could be a slip pee commute walking home from school later this afternoon as sidewalks will likely ice up as well. so we'll

exactly how bad the event becomes. but the potential is there for slippery conditions. 24 now in washington. notice everybody, everybody here still well below freezing. we are seeing wampler temperatures start to get into fredericksburg and culpeper in the upper 20s but just remember here that later this afternoon if you're out driving and the air temperature says 33 or 34, that doesn't mean the ground temperatures that are warm, and anything that falls from the sky here has potential toll freeze up pretty quick with such cold ground temperatures. all right. there's your satellite/radar. i don't think we'll get snow lakes shear. lightly get sleet and light rain which will freeze on the sur surface. again warmer air much warmer air out to our west. this transition zone from very cold pattern to warmer pattern that we'll get into starting tomorrow but that process could be a slip pro one as we are forecasting the potential for ice around here later today. again this frontal season will be moving in unfortunately right here in the mid atlantic it look like a sleet and freezing rain situation. if you're in southern maryland, lower eastern shore, the risks are lower for

under a winter weather advisory but everybody else is including here in the city for later this afternoon and let me just try to time to time out for there's future cast at noon i'm not sure it will be arriving here at noon but early afternoon, certainly if you're out to the west by early afternoon i think by certainly one work, 3:00 o'clock we'll see that light rain and sleet start to move into our region and there we are at 4:00 o'clock. so that is not a great scenario for us with people trying to get home from work and school and slippery conditions setting up across the region. i think the beltway will be okay. but certainly secondary roads and places that are untreated or have period of time where it's allowed to kind of the ice is able to build up there could be some travel issue. there we are at 8:00 o'clock and things should improve overnight once we get the light rain rain out of here. this will be a light rain even it doesn't take a lot to cause some serious icing issues out there. notice your overnight low back near freezing there could be icing issues bite tomorrow morning. the good news, milder temperatures. could we do 60 degrees by friday it's a possibility. that will be plain old rain that's the

[ laughter ] >> you know. i have to get research, you know, in the first pilot, you know, something was written where i had this altercation with one of the firemen i

so -- that is a role that hangs around and she's a great friend. i mean that role is a great friend. >> talk about what you hope this message delivers to audiences about the importance of our first responders. >> well, what i like about this show in particlar because we've seen a lot of show that is have, um, depicted these lives really well, but here i think ryan was very committed to the idea of the whole process and the whole journey of it, and the intricacies of the jobs. each individual job of the first responder and humanizing them so we are going to get to see these characters, um, hopefully on deeper levels and, um, i think in that way we will really be a able to honor them. >> this question comes from a friend of mine a big fan of n nashville i know your character was killed off in season five. will we see her at all come back in flashback or something in the final season? >> i don't know. i really don't know.
