a closer look at radar, most rain pushed over to the eastern shore. the damage is somewhat done, we have heard from so many of you vee social media that your sidewalk, front step, driveway, cars have a slight glaze of ice, it's a trace to maybe a few hundreds of an inch because the pavement has been so cold for so long we found things getting able to ice up with temperatures like, these it's warmer now than all day in dc, i'll show you why in a moment. a lot of places are near or above freezing, winchester 39, culpeper 38, cumberland 43. south and east of dc not as much, but you get north and the sidewalks are slick. warm tonight and is this going to get rid of the ice for morning? not necessarily. we're warming up because we have a south wind and it will be a

thaw is going to get underway, unfortunately later tonight, while we're rising now for a little while we got a weak front that will come through and that will help temperatures fall and we refreeze. we may drop to 27 or 32 even here in the dc area and that means patchy ice for a couple hours tomorrow morning, possibly so you have to watch your step. i'll tell you what. we have had team coverage on this all day long and we'll continue right now with fox 5 cori coffin, she's in burtonville. you've been looking around. burtonville was an area that got pretty good sleet. how are things right now? >> we're seeing the freezing over of the sidewalks and some of the more rural streets, it's exactly like you said, kind of hard to tell because at some point feels quite warm or a maybe you walk and a particular area you walk is fine and in that next moment, you're stepping on a sheet of ice and it's quite slippery. we've seen a couple of

deal with that tonight. and we've been through the montgomery county we've been over to gaithersburg, columbia. and we were off 29, we were near the substation where the maryland department of transportation state highway steaks had their trucks loaded up with salt. we were just behind a salt truck as we spoke, we saw a lot of them treating those roads, they're out now in full force. it's a busy night. they will be out around the clock, but of course, as we talked about, they can't treat everywhere, the sidewalks, some of the more smaller neighborhood streets, those are the streets that will be dealing with it. as we mentioned we saw folks walking from store to store from their car, trying to kind of make do, kind of hold each other's arms not to slip, that sort of thing and you know, the residents we spoke to say they kind of do take it in stride. no pun intended still with the black ice especially you have to be careful. >> i'm worried about black ice

>> i live in an apartment complex down here. the sidewalks are black ice >> as she mentioned they're going slow. of course, with all of these, hopefully you can see kind of the side picture of what we're seeing, there is always an increase of chance for accidents to happen, and we'll be monitoring that because of the chances of it for the whole night throughout the whole night rather for several more hours. so in that case, of course, not only do you need to go extra slow you need to keep extra room in case you do find yourself slipping or skidding on the ice's and with the salt trucks right now, give them plenty of room to work as well. we know that not only maryland department of transportation and the department of transporting all of their crews around the clock until they start to see the thawing temperature tomorrow. sending it back to you guys in the studio don't forget you can track winter

living room a family of five inside. the woman who lives in there, she was too shook up to go on camera but she said she had just stepped into the kitchen, she thought it was an earthquake and she saw the car lights and realized exactly what had happen. i will show you out here, there's a road just behind me here in montgomery county police say the woman in that suv was traveling up this road in a form that potentially obscuring the break and the accelerator. she could not discern between the pedals, she panicked and that's like what will led her to drive into the wall. you'll see the inside of the house a picture taken by montgomery county firefighters. building inspectors as well as montgomery county came out. checked out this building, unfortunately they have deemed all units here as unsafe and this families have, looking for a place to stay tonight. the

live in montgomery county marina marraco fox 5 local news a home in bethesda where a man was killed in a mysterious fire last september may soon be demolished. ordered the home be torn down, authorities say tunnels built underneath the home while making the home unstable. the home's owner david beck with is appealing the order. after the fire broke out, his body was found in one of the underground tunnels. still unclear how he died or what started that fire. a montgomery county school employee is behind bars charged with possessing and destructing child pornography. 30-year-old shawn kelly is a part-time lunch aid and a local day care worker placed on administrative leave. in july, national center for missing and exploited children noticed suspicious activity involving child porn from a computer at kelly's home in silver springs. police tracked the address and

two. on the annual ranking of the top cities, dc came in second to baltimore while chicago took nuke three spot, the ranking includes the results of tests on both residential and commercial buildings. according to the national management association, bed bugs are most commonly found in apartments, single family homes and hotels. now to a fox 5 follow-up on the grade fixing scandal in prince george's county. public schools. it's a story we broke here on fox 5 last june. today, we're learning governor larry hogan has had enough of what has happened in prince george's county schools and other jurisdictions. the maryland governor said he wants to create a special unit within the state education department that will investigate complaints of wrongdoing. he said the lack of accountability will not be to my tolerated >> if you're a parent you know how tough it can be a pry your child's smart phone or tablet away. two major investigators

and help. they say apple needs to do nor prevent smart phone addiction among kids. lindsay watts is live at the apple store in georgetown lindsay? >> tony, of course, it's not just kids who are addicted to their phones and other devices. adults are just as guilty. this apple store here was busy up until closing time. the issue though, that these investigators are raising is that research shown being glued to a screen is especially bad for kids as they're developing and can impact mental and health the letters from investigators who say they represent buy $2 billion in apple shares, apple needs to work with researchers and do its own research on the impacts smart phones and device have on kids. another idea was making iphone settings specifically for children that give parents more control over things like time limits and social media opts, basically the letter is urging apple be more proactive and involved in

the letter cites research including a study that shows there's a higher risk of suicide and depression for young people who spend hour as day on devices. people we spoke to do agree more needs to be done. they have seen this addiction first hand. >> they're also stuck to it. i can never get their attention, my little brother, dinner is ready, he's like ten minutes later, i go upstairs and he's glued to the tablet >> this mostly can be fixed in the the home where parents kind of everybody put their phones down >> when i was growing up we didn't have the technology, i went outside and go play and learned things a different way. it's very important. >> reporter: so i think there is agreement that this is definitely important. you heard that one mother, who believes this starts in the home. she said apple could certainly use the money, influence, to

to do more but she believes this really lies with parents. we're live in georgetown lindsay watts. fox 5 local news. all right. it's not too bad outside. if you think about where we were at a couple of days ago >> we've been in the deep freeze so long, that's contributed to why we saw ice build-up with temperatures above freezing. it's been a glaze and that's all it takes. i heard one of our reporters say the number one call they were get wind gust slip and falls. so the main roads appear to be in pretty good shape and there was so much treatment on them from last thursday that you know, you see clouds of salt on the road >> you could barely see the markings on the road. >> so main roads did well. we got through the evening commute. let's hope morning commute goes as well. because we do know this little glaze ice has accumulated on sidewalks, on cars, and on front steps on your driveways, so be careful. but yes, the pavement has been

we're about do something about that. but thought i would show you a stat, because it's been so unusual for us to spend so many day below 32 degrees typically, in one winter, we might have nine days in which we don't break 32. we've had ten so far this year, and today, we actually have 39 degrees last hour. that is the warmest we've been since december 26th. amazing, warmest day of the month so far. we're ending a stretch a long cold stretch, the longist since 1961, i love this tweet who is tweeting dulles district. i got home at 7:00, roads fine until i got to my cul-de-sac, which has a pronounced downhill slope to it. he slid the entire way down the hill. even with the brake on. now, tomorrow, we're going to be begin or january thaw. unfortunately because there is still a little bit of glaze around, we want to remind you that there could still be slick spots for a couple of hours post sunrise tomorrow morning. the rain pretty much out of

is very light pushing across the bay over to the eastern shore. if there's drizzle left or a little bit of mist, that should be ending by midnight and that does not show up on radar very well. so you can watch that pulling away most of the areas it's touching temperatures come pretty far up. we actually updated the temperature here to 37 now. and you can see as we look north and west, it's not terribly cold with behind the cool front that's going to cross us. but again, in many areas we're either near freezing or starting to drop just a little bit, although quantico 41, annapolis 40, from the south wind we have but even at this, we're going to go see temperatures dropping likely below freezing in many areas, and that's why we want to caution you to watch your step in the morning. 32 is where we should drop to even in dc, which is a lot better than it has been but still promotes the possibility of a little slipping here and there. 27 frederick, dulles and manassas, 31, an

say the suspect is 46-year-old shawn parker turns out he is the ex-boyfriend of one of the victim's daughters. we talked to another of the victims' daughter this afternoon. gave us this picture of her dad. 68-year-old william wright. this was him as he was getting ready to head home from the hospital. that was on christmas eve. now, you're looking at video of the scene on december 4th when police say 46-year-old shawn parker beat and tied up wright then set fire those apartment on 3rd street sweet at the time wright had life-threatening injuries due to smoke inhalation, he's out of the hospital and recovering. according to one of wright's daughters parker is her older sister's ex-boyfriend, the family thinks they were after money and are relieved to know he's in jail >> they got you. and it wasn't ok. we grieved, cried. couldn't
