it'sne of theldest newspapers in the united states of arica. it was merged with another paperalled the evening gazette. that des its origins back to the early 1800s. these are news organizations that basically span the entire history u ofnited states. as you know, the maryland statehouse is one of the oldest in this nation andas since it established,hi t news organization has covered eachnd every single day of it and the surrounding area of not only annapolis, not only anne arrundel county, but as you know, there are other entities there that is of national imptance includi the united states naval academy which is located not very far from this scene that we have been watching here today. now, the gazetteas had a long history of different addresses. it wasn't always on best gate. for a teriod ofime it was on state cirroe not far f the white house. it had moved for ari goood of time over to cveital dri from there they finally made

thr way t where they are now, where this scene is unfolding today. if we canri pictures back up for people to get a look at exactly what has been going upon. thankou. what we know in the recent ye apa very uncertain where the baltimorerc gazette pused not only the capital gazette the other sister publications that it was combined there were some concerns at the time there could possibly be some layoffs. in fact, in y the fourears since it has now become part of the baltimore sun family, we can tellouio this publn has thrived. now, according to their own today to get sense of howver large the news staff isight now, they have about 50 people on this staff.nl not o journalists but editorial folks, there's sales staff, there is a digital web team a well here. it is not clear at this point how many of these 50 people were actually working today

inside 888 bath gate when this shooting incident took place. hower, many of them, as we've detailed here in just the last hour, haveee b doing their roles as journalists in the midst of all of this tragedy and all of this horro unfolding along with them. in fact, throughout this toda the gazette itself has continued to send out tweets dating people as they can on the situation that is going on in their very ownews room. jim and sar, i can tell you through political coverage, you can't work in the city of annapolis or work inhe statehouse in annapolis without coming across or encountering a journalist from the capital gazette. >> yeah. >> reporter: they are simply quite flonkly the lifeod of that city and that county. they cover theoings, the cummings, the school events right up to b the very business of what goes on with the general assembly in thatn te always lasts between january and march and

doesn't just exist in those>> months. o. >> reporter: this is the place people turn to firstin th the morning every day. >> all community newspapers really are. they're the lif blood of the local municipalities. fitz we appreciate that. in a bit.ck back in with you >> we have some new information that we'retting. nfir ming tthhroughe erfficials thon the scene that the suspect in the capital shooting, the newspaper shooting, is a white male believed to have used a shotgun and is not cooperating with investigators. again, that i the additional details coming out about the shooting suspect in this case believed to have used a shotgun and notti coong with investigators at this point. that perhaps explains why they're still ting to figure out is there another shoer, is there additional, you know, something inside that could be harmful t people inside this building. so, hopefully at some poin he will cooperate with investigators but we'll see. >> let's go back to the live line.
5:18 pm
mikederick is a news professional moved back to specifically.npolis mike, we check with you at about 3:30 this afternoon the height of everything where we saw everybody spilling onto thetreets. you were not too far away from where this all unfolded. i'm curious what it looks like right now compared to w we first spoke. >> reporter: still a active scene, still a lot of law enforcement, ain huge presence. k that everybody knows who lives and works in this area knows by now wha going on, so there is not a lot of major presence, so t speak when it comes to, you know, as far as residents who live nearby. you haven't seen a lot of residents try to see what's going on. folks who either work here -- they're at a point where they're trying leave.so, riga f media from i can see and i'm
5:19 pm
basically hanging out at the media staging area at point where basically the crews and other media crews who are out here at this point, what they're up to as far as trying to get, you kn, a bit -- basically trying to get the news out that you all have been doing re for several hours. had the briefing a little while ago and melissa howell o far away.guy who livedto not and you've mentioned this before, but i think it bears mentioning because, we, it's coverage area and everybody knows where annpolis is but not everybody has liv in annapolis. this is not the type -- you know, i hate saying this, it sounds so cliche, any time there's aeass tragedy this but it goes without s ying, this i you don't go through life expecting this every day anyesere but cially in annapolis. >> reporter: that's absolutely a hundred percent true. i igree with you the sense of, you know, we're saying this more and more
5:20 pm
unfortunately as far as what happened in florida earlier this year, what happened in houston earlier this year and now what's happened here. and, you know, we can get into endless debates of what the asons are o are not of why these things keep occurring but at the end of the day, i wa m going abouty day like everybody else here in annapolis and certainly had no reason to think anything to this magnitude could have happened in any way, shape or e form. you dxpect this to happen in a city like annapolis. this is one of the top places rein our metroa to live. people work very hard to be able to live in a community like this and then toe sho hckas frightening. it is one of those things just don't expect. >> all. right mike friedrich there on the d we -- we appreciate it as we continue to take a liv look from skyfox rig here. you know, the scene, as we spoke with anne arrundel county fire just moments'r ago, they starting to wrap upthat pae

investigation, of course, is well under way and we still have a lot of questions. what was the reason behind? you know, we have oneti shoo suspect in custody. we'r learning, again, that from the associated press an official telling them that it was a person with a shotgun. >> uh-huh. >> they're desibing him as a white male with a shotgun and is not cooperating withat investigat this point. so, of course we don't know then the motive probably a to why this went down. and so they're still trying to figure out, too, still going to be in that building, you know -- t bt's going to cordoned off f quite some time as they try to figure out exactlwhat happened. >> so as we mentioned befor and from the communications that we've had with the firston ders anne arrundel fire, lieutenant charles fowler who we appreciate the informaon he's been abl to provide us so far and everybody else,- th there's not an immediate -- there's no longer
5:22 pm
an immediate threat. you know, this came in as an active shooter and that insin waits people in the immediate vicinity take cover, stay inside the house, take shelter. that is not the situation anymore. they are still telling people stay ay from the areaca use there's a lot of law enforcement professionals down there doing their thing, doing the investigationay by the, so it's 5:29 right now. we're expecting another ubr ngiefi 5:30. so, the second we know when that's going to w happen,re going to break in and we're going that to you with hefully some new information and i imagine that they're going to come through with another briefing at 5:30 after giving one nottool be more infemmation. and rber last time around, yo know, it took some pressing to get an official number but, you know, we keep talking in the clinical terms, the law enforcement terms but it goes back to what fitzshowed, just the number of people -- wow look at this right now. >> hm. >> look at this. i mean, weta see cerly many
