i will show you when it is finally going to warm up in just a few minutes. anna: cold weather concerns for pet owners. veterinarians warn dogs and cats with short hair are especially vulnerable to plunging temperatures. greg barnes is live in fayetteville for us. what can people do to keep their pets safe and warm on a night like this? greg: make sure they do not freeze to death. something as simple as one of these body covers all the way up to letting your pet spend the night indoors, either in the kitchen or the garage or someplace, or just making sure the dog or cat has a place that is dry and warm to stay in. delilah morris says her two dogs enjoy a brisk afternoon walk, but not a long, chilly night outside.

sure they are warm and have a good place to sleep. greg: coming in from the cold is not an option for other pets. >> we have a lot of dogs in this area with very short codes. they get left outside and get very cold. greg: she's has hypothermia is a big threat to dogs and cats on a nightly this. if a pet has to stay outside, she says, make sure they have some shelter from the wind. just make sure there is warm bedding and lots of extra food and water. >> they are susceptible to the same things that humans are. this is an abnormal temperature. it is best to bring them inside the -- inside. greg: that is probably the best thing you can do for your pets tonight. something else to think about -- the cats in the neighborhood that are outside cats, they like

name and investigators have a lead on the killer. you can look for what is new on this story tomorrow morning. anna: the search intensifies for a driver who hit and killed two teenagers less than .5 miles from their home. one of the survivors says she and four other teens were walking down the highway just after 11:00. they went to the store to get candy when what appeared to be a white pickup truck came flying down the road. 17-year-old jennifer sharp said she heard the truck hit two people behind her, including 16-year-old kyle straight, and then plowed into her 13-year-old sister, jessica. both kyle and jessica died at the scene. as they make funeral arrangements, the girls' mother makes this plea. >> any piece of information that you can remember or know about

joel: set up and frustrated by the personal and professional impact, joe went to blue cross blue shield's corporate office in durham after numerous calls. he came and threatened to stay the night. >> you locked yourself with your bike lock inside the lobby. >> i did. i had it with me. i think they knew i was serious. joel: 90% of his patients are blue cross customers. he said he has thousands he is not getting paid for because clients do not have active policies. as a blue cross member himself, his own coverage was listed as inactive as well. >> i cannot put my wife through the embarrassment of going to

joel: and so, for seven hours yesterday, 3.5 hours after the offices closed, joe refused to leave. until he was sure he had coverage. the company did not call police, but a customer service supervisor told him what he needed to hear. >> she was really reassuring that she would do what she said she would do. joel: by the next day, his coverage was finally active the i-team broke the news that blue cross was beefing up security at all of its local offices. we have many of his clients still waiting for a fix. customers should know by this week whether they will have insurance coverage for january. >> happy birthday

tribute to dr. martin luther king jr. john clark served as the mc for the celebration. the concert hall at the duke energy center. this is the big finale for all of the days events. abc 11 together highlights community needs and we are proud to be part of a community effort on martin luther king jr. day. the dream big book drive. volunteers rounded up books for triangle kids who need them. abc 11 and our parent company, disney, donated 100,000 brand-new novels to the cause. more than 360,000 books have been collected since 2011. tisha powell was there, welcoming everyone. steve: look who got a personal greeting from coach k. that is larry stogner and his wife.

most of us in the 20's now. we will likely be in the teens by tomorrow morning. wind chill can also be a factor. it feels like 13 right now. that feels a lot colder than what it is. 20 in fayetteville, about seven degrees colder than it actually is. many of us, especially towards our northern sections, could drop down to single digits before coming back up. around 8:00 in the morning, it will feel more like 11. obviously, it is going to be very chilly. around 1:30 in the afternoon, when it will actually be in the 30's, it will feel like the 20's. throughout the day, we will be dealing with that little chill -- that brutal chill.
